A census, taken in 2010 by the National Statistical Office (NSO), counted about 4.7 million people in Busan including 2.3 million
males and 2.4million females. The gender
ratio was 98.7%. According to the recent report of NSO, the population surpassed 50
million as of June 23th, 2012.

March - May. Spring is usually warm, but mornings and

evenings can be quite chilly. Trees and flowers start to
bloom. Winter clothes are still needed in March. People
tend to dress lightly in April, and it sometimes gets very
hot in May.
Summer
June - August. The weather is hot with temperatures

ranging
from 25 to 35. Heavy rainfalls, called Jangma, frequently occur between late June and late July. A few typhoons with heavy rains and winds visit the country
between August and September.
Fall
September - November. Temperatures get colder

ranging from 10 to 25. In November, it is as cold as
it is in winter. People prepare winter clothes and heaters
in advance. The autumn leaves are very beautiful.

December - February. The weather stays very cold

ranging from -10 to 10. During this period, the
weather seems to run in a cycle of three very cold days,
followed by four less cold days. Snow and harsh winds
can be expected. Warm clothes and heaters are necessary until it gets a little warmer in late February.

The Climate of Korea is temperate with four distinct seasons.

1) Seasonal Events
There are various seasonal customs in Korea. The Korean calendar uses
both the lunar and solar calendars. The seasonal
events usually follow the lunar calendar.
(1) Seolnal January 1 in the lunar calendar
- Meaning : First day of the New Year
- Food : Rice cake soup, dumplings
- Characteristics : Wearing new clothes (Seolbim), New Year's greetings to adults, visiting
ancestral graves, and playing a game of yut.

- Meaning : Harvest festival
- Food : The year's new crops and fruits
- Characteristics : Ancestor-memorial services, visiting ancestral graves, viewing the full moon, enjoying Ganggangsulae (Korean circle

On this day in 1919, a nation-wide independence movement rose up against
Japanese colonialism.
(2) Seokga Tansin-il April 8 in the lunar calendar

This is a day dedicated to Buddha's birthday.
6. Family and Eating Culture

1) Family Culture
(1) Family Relations
- A harmonious family is just as important as each member's happiness.
- Hierarchy is important within the family.
- Parent-child relationships are special. Korean parents place great emphasis on providing love and care for their children.
- Filial piety is greatly emphasized. This refers to the children's duty to take
care of their parents in their old age.
(2) Husband and Wife Relations

- Husband and Wife relations are important, but your role as a son or
daughter and a parent play a large part as well.
- Housework and bringing up children have traditionally been considered
the woman's job, but recently more men are starting to help out at home.
- Korean men are not used to showing affections in public. Husbands praising their wife in front of other family members are generally frowned
upon. They take a prudent attitude about it.
(3) Eorini-nal Children's Day, May 5

This is a day dedicated to the happiness and welfare of all children.
(4) Hyeonchung-il Memorial Day, June 6

This is a day for honoring national heroes, including those who died during
the Korean War.
(5) Gwangbok-jeol Independence Day, August 15

On this day in 1945, Korea was liberated from Japanese colonialism.
(6) Gaecheon-jeol National Foundation Day, October 3

This is the day on which the Korean nation was founded. The name Gacheonjeol means "the day on which the sky opened". The legend says the son of
the heaven-king, Dangun came down from the sky to build the nation.
(7) Hangulal October 9th

This day is a celebration of King Sejong, who is said to have devised the Korean alphabet, Hangul, and promoted it study. Hangulal had not been observed as a public holiday since 1991, but was restored as a public holiday
in 2013.

(3) Adapting to Family Life

- In order to have a happy marriage in Korea, it is important to overcome
the cultural differences. It can be difficult to adapt to family life and culture in Korea. If you are experiencing problems, consider the following
recommendations:
Try to understand each other's family culture.
Learn more about family tradition from your husband/wife and inlaws.
Respect and follow the family culture.
Solve problems through communication.
Seek help from others.
(4) Honorifics and Casual Expressions

- In Korea, there are slight differences in language style depending on the differences in age, relation, and social status between speaker and listener.
These differences can be broadly described as two speaking styles: honorific and casual. The honorifics are used with elders, and casual language
is used with younger people and friends.

Koreans enjoy sharing food
with family and friends. In
general, Korean food consists
of rice, soup, and side dishes.
Various hot stews are also
popular as well as side dishes
such as vegetables, steamed
foods, hardboiled foods,

1. Location
Busan is located on the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula. The city is adjacent to South Gyeongsang Province and faces the Korea Strait to the south.
It borders Ulsan Metropolitan City and Yangsan City to the north, and Gimhae
City lies to the west. Cities located on a similar latitude to Busan are Tokyo in
Japan, Zhongshan in China, Algiers in Algeria, and Oklahoma in the United
States. Busan shares a similar longitude with Verkhoyansk in Siberia, Nagasaki
in Japan, and Darwin in Australia.

Approximately 3.6 million in total as of 2011.

2) Main Industries
Busan's main industries are textiles, footwear, shipbuilding, automotive, marine
products, conventions, and tourism.

Busan is a metropolitan city which has 15 districts and 1 county. It has an area
of 765.94 , representing 0.8% of the whole of the Korean Peninsula. The
largest district is Gijang-gun, which occupies 28.47% of Busan, followed by
Gangseo-gu and Geumjeong-gu.
3) Climate
Busan has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. It is rather cool in summer
and warm in winter because it is located on the coast. The average temperature in
winter is about 3.8. Only 53 days of the year go reach temperatures below zero.

Busan is usually called 'Marine City'. You can easily see the sea in 10 or 30 minutes wherever you are. There are many famous beaches such as Haeundae,
Gwangan-li, Song-jung, Song-do, and Dadaepo.

Busan is sometimes called the

city of mountains. Most of the
mountains climb to an elevation
of about 500 meters which is
not very high nor low.
There are well-known mountains
such as Mt. Geumjeongsan, Mt.
Jangsan, Mt. Baegyagsan, Mt.
Hwagnyeongsan, Mt. Seongaksan, and Mt. Bongnaesan.
3) Parks
Famous parks in Busan include

(1) The 2002 FIFA World Cup Finals Draw
The Draw was held in 2001 at BEXCO attracting the attention of the world
to Busan.
(2) 2002 Busan Asian Games

The 14th Busan Asian Games achieved a big success and was popular with
Busans citizens.
(3) 2005 APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in Busan

APEC Economic Leaders from 21 countries including the United States,
Japan, China, and Australia discussed the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation at the Nurimaru APEC House in Dongbaek Island, Busan. TheAPEC
House has become a famous attraction in Busan as a result.
(4) International Labor Organization Assembly in 2006

The International Labor Organization (ILO) Asia and Pacific region assembly was held at BEXCO in August 2006.
(5) TreX-Games Busan 2008

TreX-Games, the World Sports Cultural Festival, was held in Busan.
(6) The 3rd OECD World Forum in 2009

The 3rd OECD World Forum was held at BEXCO in October 2009.

1) Eligibility
A foreigner who wants to stay in Korea more than 91 days from
the date of entry.
A foreigner who has lost their Korean nationality and so has got
foreign nationality or a foreigner who was born with Korean nationality and stayed in Korea more than 90 days with the permission to stay in Korea.
Exceptions in Alien Registration (a foreigner who applied to following clause can be exempted)
- A person or the family who works in diplomacy, official business and international agreement (A-1, A-2, A-3)
- All foreign workers/employees who work in diplomacy, all kinds of industry, the
defense industry with their family. All foreign workers/employees who have permission to exempt them from Alien registration by Minister of Justice.
- Canadians who want to stay up to 6 months or correspond to following permissible activities. Culture and Art Activities (D-1), Religion (D-6), Domestic Visit (F-1), Accompany (F-3), etc. (G-1)
2) Registration Period
If you want to stay in Korea more than 91 days from the date of
entry, you are required to register within the first 90 days of your
stay.
You should register at the same time as when you ask permission
to stay in Korea or change your status.

The application can be processed at the immigration office (or
branch office) that has jurisdiction over your area of stay.

If a foreigner wants to enter Korea, they must have a valid passport and visa issued by the Minister of Justice. You must check that your visa isvalid so as to

Foreigners are able to stay within the permitted scope according
to the status & period of staying, and political activities are not
allowed except for the case that law allows.

to support marriage immigrants in Korea. The program
introduces Korean traditional culture and customs,
procedure of issuance of marriage certificate and other

1) Goals of the marriage program

To minimize problems associated with international marriage and
support multi-cultural families in Korea.
2) Introduction of International Marriage

As of October 6, 2012, Every Immigration Office in Korea runs the
Introduction of International Marriage Program.

3) Eligibility
Marriage immigrants from countries which have a high rate of divorce or high number of people who acquired the nationality of

country notifies the Minister of Justice, and take The Introduction
of International Marriage Program.

4) Loss of citizenship
Foreign residents may lose citizenship for the following reasons
Failure to re-enter Korea within the permitted re-entry period
Committing a crime of rebellion or foreign troubles in accordance
with the Criminal Law
Committing a crime such as murder, burglary, drug trafficking, violation of the national security law, rape, sexual violence and indecent assault
Giving false information on the application of citizenship, or attempting to subvert the application process in another manner

Notice
If a marriage immigrant has difficulties in maintaining marital relations due to unreasonable treatment by the Korean spouse and can prove that he or she is not responsible for the difficulties, the marriage immigrant may be naturalized in Korea even
before a divorce is finalized. It is recommended to consult with an expert on the details of this procedure.

Application Qualification Examination and Interview
- When you apply for naturalization, the documents screening and site survey will commence.
- As notification for your interview will arrive two to four weeks before the day of your interview, you must inform your local office of your new address if your address changes after
your application for naturalization.
- Foreign spouses are exempt from taking the written test, and only need to be interviewed. Interviews will be graded based on the applicant's Korean communication ability
and other basic qualifications as a Korean national.
- If applicants fail the first interview, they will be given one more chance to pass the interview. (The applicants are allowed a total of 2 interviews.)

Naturalization Permit Granted

- The Permit is granted after the qualification examination, and the process is posted on the
homepage of the Immigration Bureau.
- Once granted a naturalization permit from the Minister of Justice, you must register your
name in the family register, report renunciation of your foreign nationality, apply for issuance of a resident registration card and return your certificate of alien registration.
Renunciation of Foreign Nationality (ones embassy) or Written Confirmation of Foreign
Nationality Renunciation (Immigration Bureau)
- Within 1 year of receiving notification of permission of naturalization, you have to write a
written pledge of foreign nationality renunciation to the Minister of Justice.
- You will automatically lose your Korean nationality if you do not make the pledge then
you have to go through the procedure for restoration of nationality.
- If you renunciate your foreign nationality, submit the certificate you get from your embassy and to the Immigration Bureau and receive confirmation.
- You should submit a copy of the relevant documents to your embassy (the original belongs to you).
- The pledge of foreign nationality renunciation can be made only during the maintenance
of marital relations. You can take the written pledge.
- If you submit a "written pledge of foreign nationality renunciation", you can keep your foreign nationality but will be treated as a Korean only. (You can use Korean passports only.)
* Foreigners from countries which do not permit multiple nationalities (e.g.China), may their foreign nationality according to the law of their respective countries (You can get more information from your native
embassy.)
Renunciation of Foreign Nationality

- Within six months of receiving notification of permission of naturalization, you must notify
the embassy of your native country or the consulate office of the renunciation of your original nationality and receive a written confirmation of foreign nationality renunciation. You
must then submit this to the person in charge of nationality at your local office of the
Korea Immigration Service to receive your foreign nationality renunciation confirmation.
- You will automatically lose your Korean nationality if you do not receive a "written confirmation of foreign nationality renunciation" from the embassy within six months.
- If you cannot produce a "written confirmation of foreign nationality renunciation" in time
due to the immigration laws in your native country or because the embassy of your native
country does not exist in Korea, you may submit a "written pledge of foreign nationality
renunciation" and receive a written confirmation of foreign nationality renunciation confirmation at your local office of the Korea Immigration Service. You must submit this to apply
for issuance of a resident registration card.
7. Inviting Parents and Relatives of Marriage Immigrants

Your parents and relatives must apply at a Korean Embassy or Consulate abroad for you to invite them to Korea. Required documents and
the number of guests you may invite will differ based on the Korean

What to do after you make a housing lease contract If, for whatever reason, your landlord or landlady is unable to refund your deposit when your
contract expires, the Housing Lease Protection Act will protect you, but
only if you take the following step:
According to the Immigration Control Act, if you intend to stay in Korea
for more than 90 days, you must register as a foreign resident (i.e. get an
alien registration card). You should register any change of address at your
local district office within 14days after moving in to a residence.
Check the financial obligations of the leaser such as their mortgages, etc. It
is advisable not to rent a property mortgage debt compared to the building
value.
- Lease Contract : The leased property, deposit, balance, payment, rental
period, and payment method should be indicated on the contract. The
previous tenant's contract expiration date and your move-in date should
also be checked.
- Contract Period : It is normal to make a 1 or 2 year contract. If the leaser
does not notify the tenant of any changes 1-6 months before the contracts expiration date, or the tenant does not notify the leaser at least 1
month before the contracts expiration, the contract will automatically be
renewed for 2 years under the same conditions.
- Maintenance fees : Maintenance fees are applicable to your apartment
building and are separate from your utility bills. Usually, the tenant is required to pay maintenance fees. However, you will need to come to an
agreement as to who will pay these expenses.
What to know about rent increases The leaser is legally entitled to increase
the cost of rent by a maximum of 5% every 2 years.
What to do if your deposit money is not refunded If you want to move out
but your deposit money has not been refunded at the end of your contract
term, you should apply for a lease registration order to maintain your rights
under the Housing Lease Protection Act.
You can file for a lease registration order at a district court without the
leasers prior agreement or cooperation. All expenses incurred may be
charged to the leaser since it is normally the leaser's responsibility.

is provided by city gas, a safety inspection will

5) Heating
(1) Boilers
There are many types of boilers, and they may operate on briquettes, oil,
LPG, or LNG city gas. Briquettes are cheap, but should be checked every
few hours so as to maintain the fire. Oil and LPG are more expensive and
need to be refilled after several weeks. LNG city gas is cheap and provides
a continuous supply through a pipe. It can be used for both cooking and
heating. A place which is serviced by LNG city gas tends to be more expensive than a place without it, but the extra cost is worth the added convenience.
(2) Electric Heater and Mattresses

Electric heater and mattresses are commonly used for household heating.
However, do not use them more than necessary as they consume a lot of
electricity.

(2) International Drivers License

If you have an International Drivers License, you can drive in Korea for 1 year
from the date on which it was issued). But it is not possible to drive a commercial
car, and you can only drive the cars mentioned on your international Drivers License. In the case that you did not take or failed the aptitude test, or in case that
you caused a traffic accident, you will not be allowed to drive even though you

(3) Gas Heater

Gas heaters are commonly used indoors, but require good ventilation. Sleeping with a gas heater on can cause oxygen deficiency and in extreme cases

Air conditioners are commonly used for cooling, but use up a lot of electricity.
The Korean government has limited the indoor temperature to a maximum
of 26 in multi-use facilities such as department stores, hotels, supermarkets,
and banks to save energy.

It is convenient for you to use a transportation card if you want to take
public transportation in big cities in Korea. You can take a public bus, local
shuttle bus, and subway with one transportation card. If you pay by transportation card, you can get a 10% discount than when you pay by cash.

1. Transfer
To transfer from one transportation system (public buses, subways, shuttle
buses, etc.) to another or one of the same kind (but not in the case of the
subways or buses with the same number).
The discount is available on the platform only when changing lines. Once you
exit the platform by swiping your transportation card at the turnstile, you cannot get a discount when taking another subway line.

5. Tips for Transfer
- Two transfers" refers to the act of transferring between two different
transportation systems within 30 minutes, thereby allowing you to
transfer up to three times.
- If your card is not charged fully, you cannot get a discount and may be
asked to pay the full fare by cash. Please check your balance frequently.
- Discount fees are charged only once when you transfer. (adults = 200
won, teenagers = 130 won, children = 50 won).

It is convenient in the case of long distance trips. Intercity buses stop at
the bus stops on the way to the destination, and express buses non-stop
services.
You can take a bus at Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal or Busan Central Bus
Terminal, which are conveniently connected with the subway.

- If you are getting off a bus because it broke down, you have to touch
the pad with your card when you get off the bus. You should not touch
the pad with your card on the replacement vehicle, otherwise you can
be charged twice since you cannot get a discount when transferring to
a bus on the same line. If you wish to transfer after getting off the replacement bus, you should swipe your card on the pad. If you are not
able to gat a discount because the transport time exceeds 30 minutes,
you can call Mybi (1588-8990) to explain the situation and get a discount.

(2) Internet Cafes

- If you want to send an email, brown the Internet, use a word processor,
print a document, etc, you can visit one of Busans numerous Internet cafes.
Internet cafes are called PCin Korean and consist of words such as cyber
(), net (), or Internet plaza (). Service fees are usually between 1,000 and 1,500 an hour, but you can use it at a cheaper price
by purchasing a membership or visiting at night.
The SkyLife staff will install this equipments. Monthly rates vary depending
on satellite TV providers, products, and the term of your contract. In addition
to the monthly rates, you need to pay for the receiver, antenna, and installation. The SkyFamily package is recommended for foreigners because customers using the SkyFamily service can cancel it any time and do not need
to pay any fees for cancellations.
(5) Newspapers & Magazines.

- Cable TV, combines broadcasting with telecommunication services, offers
a variety of domestic and foreign channels. Additional services, like high
speed internet services, are also available. If you would like cable TV, you
must give your name, phone number, address, alien registration card number, and your bank account number so that you can set up an automatic
transfer (a copy of passport needed when using GIRO).

The main public administration offices include Eup Office, Myeon Office,
Dong Community Center, City Office, Gun Office, and Gu Offices. These offices manage affairs related to the health and welfare of residents, the management of public facilities, the issuance of diverse certificates, and the
registration of diverse issues. Eup Offices, Myeon Offices, and Dong Community centers operate a wide range of programs including cultural lectures
for local residents. You can get most of the certificates at the automatic certificate issuance machines located at major subway stations or online
(www.egov.go.kr) instead of going to the offices in person. However, not
every required certificate can be issued through the Internet or the automatic
certificate issuance machine. You are advised to check whether a document
is available at the machines or online before requesting a document.

9. Social Security System

1) Basic Livelihood Security System
The government provides low-income citizens with basic livelihood
grants, housing subsidies, educational subsidies, and medical aid
to guarantee the basic livelihood and security of citizens.
(1) Qualification
In most cases, foreign residents shall not apply for the basic livelihood security system, but their Korean families may gain the status of recipients if
they meet the relevant qualifications, including household income of a certain level and the number of supporting family members. However, marriage
immigrants who are married to Korean citizens (including when there has
been divorce or death of the Korean spouse) and who are raising under age
Korean children may become beneficiaries of the basic livelihood security
system and receive government subsidies, provided that they meet the recognized household income and the qualification for supporting family members.
* Recognized Income of Household : The sum of income and properties of

all family members. The amount should be lower than minimum cost of living to get the subsidies.
** Minimum Cost of Living: The minimum cost of living to maintain people's

(3) Delays in Salary Payments

Delays in salary payments refer to cases in which employers fail to pay
salaries on the fixed date. Employees may report such a case to the Labor
Supervisory Officer of the competent Local Office of Labor and request
action to be taken.
If such cases are reported to local labor offices, the offices shall conduct
the due diligence on employers and employees 10~14 days later. Employees are recommended to provide diverse material that can back up their
statements.
(4) Working Hours

At workplaces to which the revised labor Standard Act is applied, working
hours should not exceed 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week except
for break time.
At workplaces to which the revised Labor Standard Act is not applied,
working hours should not exceed 8 hours per day and 44 hours per week
except for break time.
A 30 minuets break is given for every 4 hours of work and a 1 hour break
is given for every 8 hours of work.
Employees are free to use their breaks as they wish, but they will be unpaid
during this period.
(5) Salary

Employment contracts are signed by employes and employees. The contracts cover major issues related to salaries and workplace responsibilities.
It is important to keep such contracts as a document.

- All corporations must comply. The guaranteed minimum

wage for 2013 is 4,860 won per hour and 1,015,740 won
per month. (in the case of 40 hours of work)
- Only employees working in accordance the Labor Standard Act will qualify for retirement allowance.
(2) Protection of Employees in Accordance with the labor Standards law

Applicable to all companies or businesses that regularly employ for five workers or more.
Partially applicable to businesses or companies that regularly employ four workers or less
Salaries are to be paid directly on the fixed date, in full and in cash. The salaries shall be
paid at least once a month and in a regular manner.
Additional salary may be paid to employees who work overtime at nights or on holidays.
Employees who have worked one year or more may apply for retirement benefits.
Employees may present a petition to the competent local offices of labor and the Department of Labor supervision if employers fail to pay salaries and retirement benefits,
employees became victims of violence from employers or managers or if employees are
forced to work overtime against their will (Labor Counseling Center 1350. 1544-1350)
- This refers to the minimum amount of money that the government requires employers to pay to employees.

Allowance
- There is no retirement allowance granted to employees

who work less than 15 hours per week.
- Employees who have been with a company, which has less
than 4 workers, for more than a year are to be granted retirement allowance.

3) Social Insurance
- Foreigners without Korean nationality can decide whether or not
to apply for Social Insurance. Considering all the benefits, Social
Insurance is recommended.
- All the insurance fees are transferred to the Korean Institute for
Social Insurance.
4) Employment Insurance Industrial Accident Compensation

Employers and employees of companies pay a certain portion of their
salaries as employment insurance premiums as preparation for unemployment. If employees lose their jobs, the employment insurance fund pays unemployment benefits and allows the unemployed to attend vocational
training.
Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance

Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance is a government compensation
program that compensates the damages caused by industrial accidents. The
insurance program is applied to all companies that employ workers.
Applicants who meet the qualifications and gave submitted applications for
compensation to the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service will
be reviewed. The compensation will be given accordingly.

3. Emergency Calls (112, 119)

- You can call these numbers without an area code (in the case of cell
phones also).
- You can use the emergency call service at public phones without inserting coins or cards.
- Since 112 and 119 are processed by a computer system, rescue
process speed is faster than reporting to a police office.
In the case of Accident or Contingency Dial 112
- As soon as an accident is reported to 112, the nearest 112 police car or police
officers will come and take the necessary action.
- You should dial 112 immediately after witnessing a crime or being injured.
- When you report an accident, you must explain when and how you got injured.
Explanations about the suspect's appearance, belongings, special features,
numbers of the fugitive, direction the suspect ran to, and the vehicle the suspect used for running away in are required. Your address, name, and telephone number are also needed.
