Topic: Graduated students from FELTE and their choice for working place: go
back to their hometown or stay in the city
The purpose of this study is to explore the trend among graduated students of
Faculty of English Language Teacher Education (FELTE) of University of
Languages and International Studies. More specifically, it will mainly focus on the
choice whether to work in the city where they have studied or their hometown or
other remote area. This study will analyze the situation, the economical and
psychological reasons as well as the main effects of this affair. As this study was
conducted, observation and questionnaire will be the methods used.
The choices of working place among graduated students is a significant issue
which may greatly effect the workforce balance between the big cities and rural
areas. This issue is a big concern for many people working in the field of
sociological studies and multiple studies have been conducted across big cities of
Vietnam related to it.

In the report named nh gi th ha Vit Nam published by World Bank,

Cira (2011) has briefly mentioned this situation. The first chapter of this report
brought an overview look of the imbalance of intellectual workforce among areas.
According to their research, by the end of 2011, the areas with the highest
proportion of highly-educated labor are the Red River Delta, Mekong River Delta
and South East Area. Among those areas, the cities attract most of the labor force,
especially intellectual one, are reported to be Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. The
report also pointed out the effects of this issue, both positive and negative. From
that, it offers the reader a multidimensional view on the topic at hand. However,
the report only mentioned the overall workforce without dividing into specific
occupations. Therefore, it cannot totally represent the trend among graduated
students of pedagogical faculty.
Another research which can be found related to this topic is Kt qu kho st vic
lm ca sinh vin tt nghip trng i hc S phm thnh ph H Ch Minh
carried out by Master Pham from this university. This research was published in
the thirteenth issue of

Tp ch Khoa hc HSP TP.HCM in 2008. In her

research, Pham has successfully covered the fields that the students are interested
in after they graduate, along with whether they want to go back to their hometown
or stay in the city. It also feature some reasons affecting the students to make their
choices of work such as personality, family and salary. Although it was conducted
in HCM City, this report is a perfect sample of how we should do to gather and
analyze the information to complete the research on our topic.
The reason leading to this phenomenon is also concerned by many people in the
field. Scholars years ago have been interested in humans behaviors and the main
motivation behind those acts and choices. In his famous paper A Theory of
People Motivation, Maslow (1943) has established his hierarchy of needs

concerning his observations of humans motivation to work. This was, later on,
developed and fully expressed in Maslows book Motivation and Personality in
1954. This hierarchy nowadays still remains a basic and popular framework in
sociology research. In general, this study feature the needs of humans from
fundamental levels to self-actualization. From this theory, many studies on humans
behaviors have been conducted and published.
From Maslows hierarchy, many scholars in Vietnam have tried to explore the
reasons why most of graduated students would rather stay in the big cities to work
rather than go back to their hometown. Thach (2013) from the Cong An newspaper
has done several surveys about the difficulties for students when working in the
countryside. According to his article, the main reasons why people do not want to
work in their homeland is the dissatisfied salary they get, the adverse conditions in
many rural areas. In the article Thanh Ha: Gio vin min ni ku chnh sch
bt hp l on Nng Nghip Vit Nam, Van (2009) has mentioned the little
support of the government for the teachers working in the mountainous areas
despite many challenges they have to face in order to work in these areas. In short,
there are several reasons for this affair which have already been mention in
previous paper, including income, living conditions and support from other sources.
After analyzing other previous researches, our group decide to narrow down the
topic from graduated students in general to students from FELTE. By focusing on
a small sample group, we hope to bring deeper analysis on the topic concerning
one particular occupation, which is English teacher. In this way, we will have
space to explore exclusive information and number to make our researches
worthwhile.
