BIGGER, BETTER
AND MORE BEAUTIFUL
WITH 30 YEARS OF HISTORY IN SOUTH WALES, THE UKS LEADING
CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS IS COMING HOME TO CARDIFF TO RE-CREATE,
RE-DEVELOP AND REHEARSE THEIR SPELLBINDING SHOW BIANCO

oFit State will premiere the show on the 12th

of June and it will run until the 27th before a
seven month international tour. Cardiff will be
the only UK dates on the calendar.
Last summer saw sell-out crowds flock into their
silver spaceship style Big Top, when Bianco played
beside Callaghan Square in the city center.
This year Bianco will play Tuesday Sunday, and
at the weekends Street Food Cardiff will be offering
circus themed gastronomy beside the Big Top making
the area an exciting and vibrant cultural quarter for the
month of June.
Bianco is an immersive promenade experience that
takes place above, behind and all around a standing
audience. With performers from all around the world,
a pounding live soundtrack and breathtaking imagery,
Bianco is an all-consuming theatrical experience that is
not to be missed.
This year the production will have something for
new and old audiences alike as director, Firenza
Guidi, injects new energy, fresh ideas and new
performers into the show.

Every year we have to creatively challenge

ourselves, said Guidi. We have to keep ourselves
excited and engaged in the process; we have to
keep working to improve the show and building
on the quality of the work or its no fun for us. If
we are excited and having fun then we can excite
the audience and they have fun as well. I am very
excited about some of the things we are building, the
developments we have in store and some of the new
people we have joining us.
Tom Rack, Creative Director for NoFit State says,
We are thrilled to bring Bianco back to Cardiff.
We were overwhelmed by the positive response to
the work last summer, and cant wait to show the
city how the production has developed. NoFit State
was founded in Cardiff nearly 30 years ago and
performing our work to our hometown crowd is
something holds real magic for us.
Tickets are 13.50 - 22 and are available
at www.nofitstate.org/bianco or by calling
0333 222 9000 (local rate).

OVER 25 YEARS
OF EXCELLENCE

n October 1987 Lorna

and Steven Giles set up
a business called Mane
Attraction. It set standards for
hairdressing in South Wales.
Collecting numerous awards
and accolades along the way,
that business is now known as
Rhys Giles Hairdressing and
Beauty which continues to set
those high standards and win
award after award.
When we recently caught
up with Rhys he told us of the
companys continuing development along with what he feels
important.
While awards are great, it
is what you produce in salon
that is the most important
thing, he said. We pride
ourselves on offering the very
best customer service and care.
Thats why people return its
all about attention to detail.

PROUD SPONSORS OF

The high standard comes

from the companys in house
training programme and as
a City and Guilds approved
training centre the salon
always develop their own
trainees into future stylists - they
are totally immersed in the Rhys
Giles culture.
Having the right partnerships is also very important and
their very special 20 plus year
relationship with Kerastase
endorses Rhys Giles approach
to total quality. Its all in the
company you keep, as Rhys
puts it.

Have you
got what it
takes?

The last few years have

been very good and the skys
the limit for 2015. Rhys Giles

again this year of South Wales

HERE AND NOW

INTEREST GROWS AS
DEVELOPMENT EDGES
CLOSER TO COMPLETION
The last month has been exceptionally
busy for the Friars Walk team. As well as
the day-to-day management of a large city
centre development, weve hosted a number
of big events on site including two visits from
British Council Shopping Centres and received
some great feedback. Weve had a number
of journalists visit the site resulting in great
coverage including an interview with the BBC
which was broadcast on
national breakfast TV.
There is a genuine
interest in Friars Walk from
within the local community
and weve hosted visits from
the planning committee,
local councillors, ex planners
and various Newport interest
groups.
We are constantly
updating our website and
twitter feed to ensure the
local community is kept informed of the latest
developments and the feedback is always very
positive with pictures being retweeted and a
number of local people taking pictures of the
site and uploading to social media.
In last months column we asked readers to
let us know which restaurant they were most
looking forward to trying when Friars Walk
opens and also which remaining restaurant they
would like to see. We had an overwhelming
response to this and the feedback has been
sent to the leasing team. Please continue to
tell us which shop and restaurant you are most
looking forward to visiting.
Over the coming months we will be making
more announcements disclosing our latest
tenants.
For those of you who have visited the
city centre is recent weeks and months I am
sure you will be amazed just how quickly
the development has progressed. The shell
of the anchor store Debenhams is nearing
completion, we have installed escalators and
lifts, the internal walls are even decorated
ready for Debenhams shorty to commence their
shoptting works.
The Cineworld cinema has progressed very

18 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / MAY.2015

well with eight cinema screen auditoria formed,

Cineworld will commence their t out works
in June.
The two retail blocks have grown across the
site from Debenhams towards the Kingsway
Centre and shortly we will be forming the new
improved John Frost Square.
The white steel structure for the mall
roof commenced in March and already it is
installed from the end of Austin
Friars Street to half way down the
main mall. This structure will be
covered with an ETFE [Ethylene
tetrauoroethylene] roof, with
clear and opaque panels which
allow natural light through and
will also be uplit at night. This
will become a landmark on the
Newport skyline.
There are approximately 300
operatives on site on a daily basis
and this will increase over the
coming months.
Queensberry is very proud of the Friars
Walk development and we are extremely
excited by the prospect of the massive
improvements it will bring to the local
environment and economy.
As always the latest information including
amazing photographs of the site and stunning
new quadcopter footage can be found on our
website www.friarswalknewport.co.uk @
friarswalk

It has been a busy month on Capital Breakfast,

the clocks have sprung forward and spring has
truly sprung, which also means Ive scrapped my
daytime naps for the golf course and sunbathing.
Love it!
The last few weeks in the studio have been
tough though because every morning Ive had
to wake up to look at Pollys new amazingly
disgusting secret tattoo. She is pretty crazy for
having that particular tattoo done in that place. Its
on our Facebook page if you are brave enough to
have a look! Facebook.com/capitalMPG. We kept
it a secret to build up the intrigue, and then slowly
showed it to people one by one, including Olly
Murs backstage at his gig at the Motorpoint Arena.
He wasnt a fan of it either!
Speaking of Olly, he played a round of golf
at Celtic Manor before his gig. We spoke to him
before he took to the stage and he couldnt, not
for lack of trying, say my name, Geraint. I get this
every time I step out of Wales! I have friends from
all over the world who have learnt how to say
Geraint, but when I meet strangers I tend to give up
and it is easier to just tell them to call me Hardy!
Im now going to mention golf for the 3rd time
today because on air we have also been revealing
the star studded line up for the Celebrity Cup at
the Celtic Manor in July. Im looking forward to
seeing stars like Vernon Kay, Ronan Keating and
Rob Brydon take to the famous course. We have
more names to reveal over the coming weeks, so
keep it Capital Breakfast to nd out who is going
to be there. Plus, you could be in with the chance
of going to the biggest concert of the year in South
Wales if you want to win tickets to see One
Direction, keep it Capital Breakfast!

HERE AND NOW

Urban Tap House finally

comes to Newport

ewport-based Tiny Rebel Brewing Co,

which runs the Urban Tap House in
Cardiff, is launching its first pop-up
bar in its home city.
Opening on Friday, May 1, the bar will
be located on Newports High Street within
the recently-refurbished front entrance of the
Newport Indoor Market.
Urban Tap House pop-up will follow a similar
concept as its award-winning sister pub in Cardiff,
Urban Tap House Pop-Up will follow a similar
concept as its award winning sister pub in Cardiff,
showcasing a range of beers and cider produced by
Tiny Rebel, including current Champion Beer of
Wales Fubar.
Urban Tap House is famed for its simple burger
menu, but the new pop-up will instead specialise
in homemade pizzas.
All pizzas will be made fresh on site and all the
ingredients will be sourced from businesses based
within Newport Market. The pizzas and beers will
also be available for takeaway.
Lovers of their favourite ales can also get refills
buy purchasing a two litre growler bottle priced
at 6. One of the takeaway meal deals on offer
includes a 12in pizza and refill of your growler for
20, individual 12in pizzas are priced at 10 each.
Located at 22-23 High Street, the pop-up will
be open for the whole of May and throughout
the month will be putting on a series of events
including music and quiz nights, bring-your-own
vinyl and board games evenings. All furniture in
the bar will be created from up-cycling existing
pieces.
Likes its sister venue in Cardiff, the seating

20 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / MAY.2015

arrangement will be similar, with long benches

and tables reminiscent of a German beer festival,
inviting people to sit next each other and engage
in conversation.
Bradley Cummings, director of Tiny Rebel,
said: With Newport being our hometown we
wanted to open a bar here for some time and this
was the perfect opportunity.
The location became available and we
thought it was a great opportunity to show our
local community what we can do. We also wanted
to make sure that we used local suppliers for all the
food we will be creating. There are some fantastic
businesses in Newport Market and we wanted to
use their produce to show what great items you
can get there.
We will also be the first bar in Newport
to only be selling products from independent
producers and the only place in the city to be
serving a third of pints for our more specialist
beers. Urban Pop Up is all about quality drinks
and local food in a relaxed social atmosphere.
We are currently looking for a suitable
location for our second, permanent Urban Tap
House, so if the pop up goes well it may be an
option that we become a permanent fixture in
the city.
Urban Tap House pop-up will be open seven
days a week from Friday May 1 until Sunday May
31, and will be open from noon until midnight
seven days a week.
The vibe to Urban Pop Up is going to be
no different to Urban Tap House Cardiff
quality drinks and local food in a relaxed social
atmosphere.

Pop along and show your support this May

by visiting this exciting new pop-up bar and
restaurant. If you like what you see and taste,
please let the team know, your response and
opinions matter.
Urban Pop-Up is located at 22-23 High Street,

Two soldiers march to

raise funds for charity
In June former soldiers Neil
Spencer and Lee Umpleby are
taking on a mammoth task to
raise funds for two charities.
On Saturday June 6 the
super-fit former members of
the Royal Welch Fusiliers are
setting out on the Fan Dance
challenge a 24km speed march
over the Pen Y Fan mountain, a
route which means climbing the
mountain twice while carrying a
35lb military rucksack.
The Fan Dance forms part of
the UK Special Forces selection
course, but more recently it has

became an event which anyone

can try.
Straight after the Fan Dance,
Neil and Lee are then setting out
on a challenge to summit Pen Y
Fan as many times as possible
within 24 hours while carrying
their 35lb packs.
In 2010 former International
Welsh rugby player and
adventurer Richard Parks
undertook the same challenge as
part of his build up training for
his epic 737 challenge, Richard
managed seven summits within
the time.
Neil now works in
distribution, but in 2004 while
serving in Iraq, he was
injured when a suicide car
bomb exploded yards from
him. He was hit in the back
and his left forearm.
After years battling the
mental effects of trauma he
has since undertaken many
endurance events to raise
funds for military charities
including a 16-hour treadmill
run, a solo 64-mile mountain
hike and also a few ultra
marathons raising around
4,500 along the way.
Lee, who lives in Magor,

@wearevoice

is now a police officer with the

National Police Air Service and
has also taken part in many ultra
marathon events.
They both know of the task
that lays ahead, and if they
match Richards seven summits
and the Fan Dance, they will
cover more than 50 miles and
around 5,500m of ascent more
than half the height of Everest
and a walking time of about 30
hours.
The two charities that Neil
and Lee are hoping to raise
funds for are the CF Trust and
Talking2minds.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited
disease caused by a faulty gene.
Young Amy, from Newport, is
one such girl who suffers from
it and like many, has regular
physio sessions, hospital visits
and up to 30 tablets to take to
stay well.
The CF trust is the only UK
charity which makes a daily
difference to the lives with
people with CF.
Talking2minds is a small
charity formed by former SAS
soldier Bob Paxman to provide
support and treatment to military
and the blue light services
personal that suffer from
PTSD and other mental health
problems.
Please donate using this
safe payment system at www.
virginmoneygiving.com/
neilspencerfandance
All donations will be split
equally between the charities.
Thank you, Neil and Lee.

BUILDING ON
NEWPORTS
NATO SUCCESS
The 2014 Nato Summit
at the Celtic Manor Resort
brought 60 world leaders 7,500
delegates and 5,000 journalists
to Newport. Now, initiatives
are underway to capitalise on
the citys success in hosting the
summit and bring more world
class events here in the future.
Key businesses specialising
in conferences and events came
to Newport earlier this year for
a familiarisation visit based
around the experiences world
leaders enjoyed during the Nato
Summit.
The visit, with support from
Visit Wales, was designed to
inspire clients to bring their
meetings, conferences and
events to Wales, potentially
contributing millions of pounds
to the economy.
Delegates were given a
Welcome to Wales reception
at the Celtic Manor Resort with
a presentation on Wales as a
meetings destination.
At the summit dinner at
Cardiff Castle they enjoyed the

same menu that was served for

world leaders, including Prime
Minister David Cameron and
US President Barack Obama,
during the ofcial dinner for
heads of state and government
last September.
Created by award-winning
Welsh chef Stephen Terry,
the menu used the nest local
Welsh produce to showcase
some of the fantastic food Wales
is famous for, including saddle
of Usk Valley lamb and Black
Mountain Smokery salmon.
Newports future as a
world-leading destination for
events looks bright. A Wales
International Convention Centre
is proposed for the city and, in
June, the Interaction Council
will meet at the Celtic Manor
Resort. The Interaction Council
is a body of former world
leaders, including former US
President Bill Clinton, which
develops practical solutions to
the worlds political, economic
and social problems.

HOW WILL THE DEVELOPERS HELP WHEN IT

COMES TO NABBING A JOB AT FRIARS WALK?
SIMON PULLEN, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR
WITH QUEENSBERRY REAL ESTATE AND
NEW CENTRE MANAGER FOR FRIARS
WALK IN NEWPORT

t full capacity Friars Walk will employ

up to 1,500 people in all manner of
positions from weekend part-time staff to
store and restaurant managers.
We are working closely with Job Centre Plus and
have had a number of meetings with them. We do
this so we can facilitate local people getting the
jobs at the new centre.
We are planning at least one, possibly more,

@wearevoice

recruitment fairs so potential employees can come

and see which retailers and restaurants are looking
for staff, and what positions they need to fill.
We did the same in Bath six years ago before
the SouthGate shopping centre opened.
The jobs will range from four hours at a
weekend which would suit those just leaving school
or university students looking to make some extra
money, then there will be shop floor assistants,
restaurant workers, mid level managers right up to
store and restaurant managers.
What retailers and restaurants value is the local
knowledge and experience they can tap into.
People will move around until they find an outlet

they want to work for. Some

people will start off maybe in a part-time job and
then work their way up to a senior level with the
same outlet.
It is great that they will be able to grow and
progress like that in Newport.

HOT PROPERTY

FIVE IMPROVEMENTS WHICH ADD

THE MOST VALUE TO YOUR HOME

ome improvements can breathe new life into

a property and ultimately add more value.
You could spend thousands putting in
a new kitchen or bathroom or building a
conservatory, but which would give your homes value
the biggest boost?
FIND OUT HERE:
A survey by the National Association of Estate Agents
revealed the top home improvements which could add
the best value to your property. They were adding
a bedroom, usually by converting loft space as the
best modification; a new kitchen; a conservatory and
converting a garage into living space.
AN EXTENSION
Extensions can vary hugely, from two-storey ones
which almost double a house in size to the addition of
an extra downstairs room.
Because they are so varied it is difficult to put a
figure on how much they cost or how much value they
will add.
An extension done well which adds good-size
extra rooms in a way that is sympathetic to your home
or transforms its character coherently can be a major
selling point and one you can enjoy for many years
as an owner.

78 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK / MAY.2015

A LOFT CONVERSION
Adding an extra bedroom can add up to 10 per cent
to the value of your home, according to Movewithus,
and the NAEA, particularly if its a loft conversion.
It is important to not eat into living space to do it,
but if there is room to expand into your loft you could
get a decent return and some much needed extra
space.
Depending on the size and the location of your
property, you should expect to pay 15,000 for a
small loft conversion or 25,000 to 40,000 for a
big one.
You will need to inform your home insurer of any
changes.
EXTRA BATHROOM
An extra bathroom can be a decent selling point on
a property with the demand for en-suites fuelling this
trend. According to Movewithus an extra bathroom
could add six per cent to your property value.
Depending on the type of tiles, fixtures and fittings
you want, data from website TradeAdvisor shows a
new bathroom could cost from 2,500 to more than
6,000.
NEW KITCHEN
A kitchen is often the focal point of a home and can

reflect the owners tastes and personality.

It may be the first thing a buyer looks to replace,
so if you can provide a ready-made, attractive space,
buyers may be willing to pay more to save themselves
the hassle of arranging a new kitchen.
The big change in recent years has been the trend
for open plan kitchen, dining and living spaces
Research by consumer watchdog Which? shows
a new kitchen costs on average 8,000, but could
add around six per cent to the value of your property
according to Movewithus.
CONSERVATORY
A conservatory provides an extra room in your house,
but means giving up some garden space.
If it is under a certain size, you wont need
planning permission and could do it under permitted
development
A conservatory can be a good way of delivering
extra space for less or getting some open plan living,
although be aware you may have to abide by rules on
doors closing off areas.
According to Movewithus, your conservatory could
boost your property value by five per cent, but expect
to pay between 4,000 and 10,000.

CHEF OF THE MONTH

SIMON KING OF RESTURANT 1861

Multi-award winning chef and owner of the incredibly popular Restaurant 1861, Simon King,
chats to Voice in the lead-up to the launch of this years Eating Out Wales guide
Why did you decide to become a chef?
Ive always had an interest and used to prepare
dishes with my grandmother and, of course, my
mum. I can remember being in school and mixing
granola in a cookery lesson, strangely Ive been
drawn to food ever since!
What influences your cooking?
Everything! But the seasons and natures great
bounty really gets me exited. We are just entering
in to the best season early summer we have
elderflower, wild garlic, nettles asparagus and
a huge bounty of amazing tasting fruits and
vegetable, as well as lamb getting really tasty. This
time of year I feel so inspired.
Who or what inspires you?
Natures bounty really and anything new that you
can find at the moment. Ive just started using
dandelions and burdock.
Whats your favourite thing to cook?
Anything fresh and tasty. Sometimes the best
things are the simplest. A piece of steamed
fish, asparagus with salt and pepper and a little
hollandaise sauce, or a fresh poached egg to dip
in fantastic.

@wearevoice

Whats your favourite season?

Thats a tricky question. Early summer and spring,
are bountiful, but Ive always had an interest in
foraging and for me the smell of autumn woodland
and hunting for wild mushrooms is a yearly treat
which the family look forward to. My son in
particular just cant wait and starts hunting around
the middle of August.
Whats the best thing about being a chef?
Well its definitely not the hours! Being able to work
with fresh ingredients and seeing the expressions
on peoples faces as they connect with the flavours,
I guess making people happy with food really.
Whats new on the menu for summer?
Fantastic asparagus to begin with, then amazing
lamb, and venison, fresh fish alongside fantastic
fruits like strawberries and raspberries, and my
favourite, the humble gooseberry, is fantastic with
elderflower souffl.
Whats the one thing in your kitchen that you
cant live without?
Its a toss up between my kitchen aid and naturally
my knives
Youve been awarded numerous AA Rosettes,

what makes your food so good?

Its very kind of you to say so. Years of practice, and
using fresh seasonal produce simply bringing out
the flavours rather than covering them
What would you recommend for someone to try
who has never visited 1861 before?
We have just put asparagus on the menu with a
sweet chilli dipping sauce a combination my
wife created but credit due, its amazing. She likes
those moments when two flavours come together
and give what she calls a zing. We have a fantastic
new beef supplier with amazing flavour, so thats
a serious treat at the moment and of course, I can
barely keep up with the demand for the passion
fruit souffl, light sweet and tangy a great finish to a
meal, or as my daughter Emily likes to think at any
time of day!
Restaurant 1861 can be found at Cross Ash, near
Abergavenny NP7 8PB. Call 0845 388 1861 to book

EATING OUT WALES

Tried & Tasted

One thing you can denitely say about
Vanilla Spice, at the Harlequin roundabout
in Newport, is its menu is certainly
comprehensive.
Most of the dishes have descriptions with
them, making choosing what you are going to
enjoy that bit easier.
We were there on a bustling Friday
evening. The restaurant in this former pub
is light, airy and very spacious. The staff are
friendly and attentive. And, as I say, the menu
is expansive. Just as well we were quickly
seated with drinks when the time came to
choose our dishes.
The range of starters and appetizers start
from 2.95 for a vegetable pakora up to 8.95
for a sharing tikka platter. We chose that
platter plus a couple of vegetable samosas
(3.50) along with a plate of popadoms and
dips.
Wed been warned beforehand that some
of the portions were huge so when it came
to choosing the mains we opted for two rices
and two naans between the three of us
which we still left some of!
We chose chicken karahi (7.95), aloo
saag mangsho (7,95) and aam-ki chicken
(7.95). And, yes, the portions were huge.
But the side selections were so tempting we
had to also have brinjal bhaji and cauliower

VANILLA SPICE INDIAN

KITCHEN NEWPORT

bhaji (2.95 each).

The mains were delicious. My aamki chicken was mildly spiced with huge
chunks of mango in a really creamy sauce.
The karahi was a moderately spiced dish
with onions, peppers and herbs in a thick
sauce and the aloo saag mangsho was lamb,
potatoes and spinach in a lusciously medium
sauce. We managed all the meat and as much
sauce as we could, but were stuffed by the
time we surrendered.
Needless to say, even though we tried
to tempt ourselves with a look at the dessert
menu, we can honestly say it would have
been a step too far.
The meal was delicious, fresh
and not overly spiced. The
atmosphere was relaxed and
welcoming.
And the Vanilla Spice
has gone onto our list of
Indian restaurants to
revisit.

To Kill a Machine tells the life-story

of war-time cryptanalyst Alan Turing.
It is a story about the importance of
truth and injustice and also about
the importance of keeping and of
revealing secrets.
The play examines Turins
pioneering work considering whether
a machine could think. At the heart
of the play is a powerful love story
which questions the meaning of

humanity, and the importance of

freedom and considers how these
questions are played out in relation
to Turings own life, death and
posthumous re-evaluation.
To Kill a Machine is at Blackwood

BLACKADDER AND
BALDRICK GO FORTH
IN NEWPORT
N

ewport Playgoers
cunning plan of
performing Blackadder Goes
Forth to mark the centenary
of the First World War is
sure to prove a success in
attracting audiences to the
Dolman Theatre.
Based on the fourth
and final series of the BBC
hit comedy, this play has
the recurring characters of
Blackadder, Baldrick and
George scheming to get out
of the trenches during WWI.

General Melchett and

Captain Darling thwart their
efforts in their own bumbling
style.
Packed with wit and
humour, this play also has
the power to make audiences
think about the indiscriminate
waste of so many lives all
those naive Baldricks, the
patriotic Georges and the
world-weary Blackadders
who never returned from the
Great War.

@wearevoice

1. Blackadder (Steve Drowley) listens as Baldrick (Gordon Collins) explains yet

another cunning plan to escape the frontline
2. Baldrick (Gordon Collins), George (James Symonds), Melchett (Peter Bourne)
and Blackadder (Steve Drowley) discuss tactics
3. Lord Flashheart (Ryan Hillier) wastes no time in getting to know new recruit
Bob (Catherine Morgan)
4. A near-miss in the trenches for George (James Symonds), Blackadder (Steve
Drowley) and Baldrick (Gordon Collins)

Blackadder Goes Forth is at the Dolman Theatre from May 13 to 16

Q&A

NITELIFEARTS&CULTURE

CULTURE VULTURE
VOICE CATCHES UP WITH SOMEONE IMPORTANT IN
THE NEWPORT ARTS SCENE...

ALISON STARLING

LAST BOOK YOU READ?

Suite Franciase by Irene
Nemirovsky. A fantastic writer and
a courageous woman who died at
Auschwitz. I havent seen the film but
I so recommend the book and you
have to read all the notes at the end
too. It contextualises the book and
the notes are very moving.

ON MAINDEE FESTIVAL, SOCIAL

ENTREPRENEURS AND A RESCUE...
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU
DO?
Im a community worker at Charter
Housing Association, but when Im not
doing that Im a volunteer and trustee of
Maindee Festival Association and trustee
of a new community-led regeneration
organisation called Maindee Unlimited.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS ROLE?
I fell into community work after a 20year career as a broadcast journalist. Then
my boss Bron asked me if Id like to support
Maindee Festival as part of my role.
That was 12 years ago and Ive become
obsessed with it ever since, even moving to
Maindee a year ago.
WHAT IS THE NEWPORT ARTS/MUSIC
SCENE LIKE?
Exciting and innovative. Theres a
huge amount going on in Newport of
which probably most of the population is
totally unaware lots of talented people,
particularly community artists doing very
interesting things, like at The Project Space.
WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO
AT THIS YEARS MAINDEE FESTIVAL?
The parade is going to be amazing.
Our parade team, Malarky Arts, is working
on designs of homes and buildings, as the
theme is Right Up Your Street. We hope
to create a mini street on the festival site.
Theres also a team of 30 community artists
working on a project with the Big Splash
and the Wales Millenium Centre. Theyll be
contributing to the parade too with a giant
cauldron and about 50 costumes. Music-

wise we have Peel Your Own Spuds, The

Floral Wham Trams, Maindees Got Talent,
Guto Dafis, and performances from Urban
Circle. A spoken word tent, walkabouts,
lots of nice food and, as always, a great
family vibe.
HOW IMPORTANT ARE EVENTS LIKE
THIS TO THE PULSE OF THE CITY?
Crucial. Maindee is great for so many
reasons. Its free, which were very proud
of. It brings a very diverse community
together. A lot of people visit who may not
generally access arts activities, and they
suddenly stumble across a completely
new experience. The parade is a fantastic
spectacle but also gives people the
opportunity to take part and contribute to
something happening in their community,
which gives them a sense of belonging.
IF YOU COULD PUT ON ANY KIND OF
EVENT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Id love to be involved in staging a
community play, like The Passion in Port
Talbot. While this isnt something well do
at the festival, it is something Maindee
Unlimited is planning, and itll be on the
streets in Maindee. Thats going to be
exciting.
WHERE WOULD YOU SUGGEST WE
GO FOR AN ARTY NIGHT OUT IN
NEWPORT?
Definitely The Project Space in
Commercial Street. It specialises in quirky
evenings with a mix of everything, art,
performance, music. Its generally thoughtprovoking, surprising, and odd.

IF YOU WERENT HERE DOING

THIS, WHERE WOULD YOU BE?
I have no idea. Being very
active somewhere else. Im pretty
adaptable so I could be anywhere
and be happy.
IF YOU COULD GRANT
NEWPORT ONE WISH, WHAT
WOULD IT BE?
That a thousand social
entrepreneurs could be drafted in
to engender a spirit of optimism
and positivity to the rest of us. That
they could teach in our schools
and encourage our children to be
creative, ambitious, and community
minded.

MOST EMBARRASSING
MOMENT?
Ive made all sorts of verbal gaffs
in my broadcasting career. Im from
Bucks and in my first broadcasting
job at Swansea Sound I read out
the sports news and described
rugby as rugger. It took me a long
time to live that down! But the most
embarrassing thing was during my
first week at Swansea Sound when
I read the news and then took my
dog for a walk and got stuck on
Worms Head. I had to be rescued
by coastguards and The Sun and
Star newspapers printed a story
saying newsreader Alison was too
busy romping on the beach with her
puppy to notice that the tide had
come in. They also maintained that
Id just read the tide tables out on air
to add to the general impression that
I was a complete bimbo!

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR

DREAM JOB?
I feel I should have a stab at
working for myself, converting a
building into a small arts centre with
a tiny performance space would be
great. But as long as Im working
with people and its creative I dont
mind what I do. Theres no such thing
as a dream job.
THREE WORDS WHICH SUM UP
NEWPORT FOR YOU...
Down to earth.

WHAT ONE SONG WOULD

YOU HAVE ON YOUR IPOD?
Probably Come on Eileen by
Dexys Midnight Runners. It makes
me want to dance.

BUSINESS OF THE

MONTH

JOHNNY HATHAWAY
PHOTOGRAPHY

Voices Business of the Month is Johnny Hathaway

Photography. Voice caught up with him to talk about
his love for photography
What first got you into photography?

Ive always loved photography and particularly the

thought of capturing a moment in time which will
last forever. My Dad had a SLR camera when I was
very young and I naturally picked it up and had a
go.
Who or what inspires you?

People inspire me. I love capturing the essence

of a person, the slightest little gesture or look can
tell a lot about their personality. Nature inspires
me too, I love getting out into the Forest of Dean
or Wye Valley and losing myself in the beautiful
surroundings.
What do you love most about capturing a
moments in time?

The fact that it will last forever and its an historic

reminder of that exact moment. Weddings are a
great example of this, capturing all the emotions
and happiness of the day, so they can re-live it for
years to come.
Whats the best thing about documenting a
wedding day?

I love shooting weddings its a lot of pressure

but I tend to work better under pressure. Good
wedding photography is more about telling a story
of the day rather than the old style of documenting
who was there on the day in a never ending list of
uncomfortable group shots. I love people, so when
Im interacting with the happy couple and guests,
Im genuinely in my element.
Throughout your career youve travelled
many different countries, where is the best

@wearevoice

place to take photos?

South of France is one of my favourite, as the light

is amazing. I was lucky enough to spend around
four years of my life travelling the world (mainly
surng) and it opens your eyes to the amazing
world we live in. Im also very interested in
different cultures.
Why should people choose you to take their
photos?

I put 100 per cent into every photo I take, so you

are assured that I will capture the best I can. I love
people, so I think my personality helps getting the
best out of people and shines through in the images.
I like to shoot what people want rather that just
what I like to shoot.
Johnnys studio shoot fee is just 25 an hour and
includes a free 7in x 5in framed print. Johnny keeps
the cost of his services as low as possible, so that
he can offer great quality products at an affordable
price.
His wedding rates are very competitive for the
quality and service thats on offer, and customers
are quite often surprised with costs compared
to other photographers with a similar style.
Commercial photography starts from 50 per hour.
Johnny Hathaways photography studio
in Moor Street, Chepstow, is open Monday
to Saturday from 10am to 3pm. Call
01291 628816 to book an appointment.

Get the look

Jeunesse
Instantly
Ageless

Outfit from
River-Island

nstantly ageless is a micro-cream which uses

peptides to give the appearance of skin looking
10 years younger.
This meticulously developed formula is
lightweight and contains a skin-conditioning
complex of minerals which evens skin tone.
Instantly Ageless immediately dissolves into the
skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Its
specifically designed to target areas which have
lost elasticity revealing visible toned, lifted skin.
Within seconds of using the cream, I could feel
it start tightening and changing my eye contours,
with a stretching sensation that does not hurt but is
noticeable enough that I wondered whether or not
I would have to deal with it all day.
The sensation does fade within a few minutes,
although the results last eight-plus hours. Only a

tiny amount is required to get the job done, but do

make sure that enough is applied for adequate
coverage, or else the spots that were missed end
up looking more dramatic when the rest of the
area is wrinkle-free.
I couldnt believe the results. Ive suffered from
bags under my eyes all my life, hereditary from
my mother I believe, my sister is the same too, so I
cant wait to tell her about this amazing product.
The results became more dramatic about two
minutes and I couldnt stop looking at how different
one eye looked from the other. Im guessing that
results may vary from person to person, but youll
never know until you try it for yourself.
You can watch a video and see the results

Cakes and Bakes is a

homemade cake stall in
Newports Indoor Market
which specialises in gluten-free
and diabetic friendly foods.
Owner Naomi opened
her stall on January 19, as she
felt that super market chains
hiked the prices on products
for those who have dietary
requirements. At her stall single
cup cakes start from as little
as 15p.
Naomi can also make
cakes to order for special
occasions and birthdays,
including vegan and dairy-free
cakes. A seven-and-a-half
inch cake, made with fresh
ingredients, is priced at 2.50.
As well as making a wide
variety of cakes, Naomi also
makes a range of freshly
baked breads too.

For your entire floor

covering needs, make your
way to DTS Carpets in
Newports Indoor Market.
Owner Dale has some
fantastic offers including free
underlay when you spend
more than 150, as well as
a free delivery service within
a 10-mile radius of Newport
city centre.
Not only does Dale offer
a wide range of products
for the home, he can also
supply and fit commercial
properties such as offices,
bars and restaurants, bed and
breakfasts, and hotels.
A best-seller at DTS
Carpets is its bleach-cleanable
carpets at 5.95 per square
metre, which are hard wearing
and stain resistant great for
bars and restaurants, as well
as rental properties.

Located in Newports
Indoor Market, owner
Alessandro Rimola makes an
extra special effort to source
the widest range of produce,
offering his customers
immense choice and variety.
Each week Alessandro
takes a trip to Spitalfields

traders at this world
renowned market.
Alessandro has a wide
range of unusual fruits and
vegetables from all over

A foundation is an investment in a better future

ionne Laida, pictured, was

volunteering for BAWSO, a charity
which offers information, advice
and support for Black and Minority Ethnic
people in Wales.
I loved the job, but after a few years
of working as a volunteer, I decided it
was time to move up a level. I wanted to
improve what I could give to the families I
worked with, and knew the best way to do
this would be to go back into education.
In 2013, Dionne enrolled on the
Foundation Certicate in Social Science at
the University of South Wales.
Initially, I took the course because I
wanted to be more professional in my role
at BAWSO. But my condence soared and
with it, my aspirations.
Within a few months, Dionne had set
her sights on a degree.
I felt that I had been given the
opportunity of a lifetime, and didnt want
to waste it. From my work with BAWSO,
I knew I enjoyed working with families,

3
Days

GO WILD
AT THESE
FANTASTIC
ZOOS

and being in an advocacy role, so the social

work degree seemed the obvious choice.
Dionne applied for the social work
degree at Newports City Campus, and was
successful.
The foundation course has transformed
me. I was very shy when I started, I
wouldnt have dreamed of speaking in front
of a group. Now I am doing
presentations in front of
the whole class, and really
enjoying it.
When I came here,
I didnt know a soul, but
within days I had a new set
of friends.
All of us come from
different backgrounds,
but we all want more for
ourselves, and are here to
achieve that.
Before I started, Id say
the academic side of things
worried me the most. But

there is so much support.

For anyone who is put off coming to University,
particularly those who have been out of education for a
while, my advice is: Dont be worried that youll be on your
own. Everyone wants you to succeed and there is so much
help available.

EDUCATION
ESTABLISHMENT

OF THE
MONTH

Building Blocks Nurseries are two wonderful familyrun day care centres for children aged from new
born to eight years Building Blocks is located on
Ynys Lane, Croesyceiliog, and Building Blocks Too
can be found at Fairwater Way, Cwmbran

his May, Building Blocks

at Croesyceiliog will be
celebrating 20 years
of providing excellent
childcare, and Building Blocks
Too at Fairwater just celebrated its
sixth successful year in April. Both
nurseries offer the same services
and are open from 7.30am to 6pm,
50 weeks of the year, closing only
for one week at Christmas and one
week at Easter.
Kath Boycott, a retired local
school teacher, originally opened
Building Blocks nursery in
Croesyceiliog, with her daughter
Joanne taking over duties as
manager a few years ago. Joanne
together with business partner
Lesley Price, own and manage the
Fairwater Nursey.
Both nurseries employ
experienced staff qualied to NNEB
or NVQ Level 3 in Early Years

60 / WEAREVOICE.CO.UK /MAY.2015

Childcare and Education, with

enhanced CRBs and qualications
in rst aid.
One of the main aims of the
Building Blocks family is to provide
a happy, relaxed and homely
environment to help your child feel
secure and safe.
Recent CSSIW and ESTYN
inspection reports for both
nurseries were outstanding, where
children benetted from a wellplanned curriculum with a range of
appropriate activities and learning
experiences children appeared
condent, relaxed and happy, and
highly involved in the activities
provided.
The reports also stated that care
is provided in a relaxed way, with
children having good interaction
with their carers.
Staff members respond with
smiles and laughter, and children

@wearevoice

family & education

who sought extra support were

responded to with cuddles and
comfort, allowing them to form an
attachment to their carers, due
to the day to day familiarity and
consistency.
Children also made exceptional
progress in learning to speak
Welsh, and are allowed to develop
a high-level of self esteem and
condence because adults respect
their ideas by giving them frequent
opportunities to make their own
choices.
Their qualied and experienced
staff aim to help each child to
develop skills, attitudes and
understanding, working with the
foundation phase.
The team provides care and
education to newborn children up
to the age of eight. Although the
staff are qualied, they regularly
attend training courses which
enables them to provide a higher
standard of care and education
for all the children, encouraging
learning through play.
The nurseries have an open door

@wearevoice

policy, which encourages parental

involvement you are able to
discuss your childs progress with
staff on a daily basis. Development
records of your childs progress can
be viewed at any time on request
and also at an annual parents
evening. The team works alongside
parents to encourage children
to become condent and active
members of society.
Building Blocks offers full and
part-time placements with the
options of caring for a full week,
full day, morning session and
afternoon session. All meals and
snacks are included and they can
cater a specialist menu for certain
dietary requirements. They can also
provide a wrap around service to
children up to ages of eleven, which
is a pick up and drop off service
from local schools.
Parents are welcome to view
the nursery at any time, and
Building Blocks offer free settling
in sessions. Book an appointment
to discuss your childs needs and
requirements.

Extreme
SAILING SERIES

he adrenaline-fuelled Extreme
Sailing Series returns to Cardiff
on June 19 to 21, as part of its
11-month global tour. Now a rm
favourite on the Cardiff summer sports
calendar, watch eight of the worlds top
sailing teams battle it out in Cardiff Bay
over three days.
With Olympic heroes, Americas Cup
winners and Round the World sailing
legends going head-to-head, the awardwinning Stadium Racing format provides
exciting views of the racecourse from the
waterfront and Barrage, while back on
land theres entertainment for everyone.
On Saturday June 20 and Sunday
21 the race village near the Norwegian
Church will be bustling with activity
including action packed entertainment,

@wearevoice

bars, food stalls and live music sessions.

Also dont forget it is Fathers Day
that weekend so why not watch the
Extreme Sailing series and spend time
with the family in Cardiff Bay? The
diverse waterfront boasts a great mix of
attractions, coupled with vibrant bars and
restaurants that create a truly unique
atmosphere worthy of any capital city.
From Friday to Sunday watch the
racing between 2pm and 5pm, while the
land entertainment will take place from
11.30am to 6pm on the Saturday and
Sunday only.
For more information about the
Extreme Sailing Series Act 4 Cardiff
Presented by Land Rover visit
www.extremesailingseries.com and
www.cardiff-festival.com

Where is it happening?
The eet race in the heart of the
Welsh capital on Cardiff Bay.
Where is the best place to watch?
The Bay has excellent viewing
points all around the waterfront,
from Mermaid Quay to the
Barrage. Back on land visitors can
also enjoy a festival atmosphere at
the Extreme Sailing Series Race
Village located on Harbour Drive
next to the Norwegian Church.
Anything else we should know?
Another favourite with the
teams, Cardiff always delivers a
big welcome, with huge crowds
enjoying the racing. The racing
area is very compact and the boats
get within touching distance of the
shore especially as they line up
for the starts. When the breeze is
up the boats race on the at water
towards the crowds at speeds of 25
knots.
