Mark, where do you have your portfolio invested?

By Mark Charnet

ver the 33 years Ive

been a Retirement
and Estate Planning
Specialist, most of my
prospects, before becoming
my clients, asked me the question: Where is your portfolio
invested? It has been by far
the most frequently asked
question of me but, it really
wasnt what these people
wanted to know. The disguised question was simply:
Do you actually own what
you are attempting to sell me
today? More simply stated,
Do you own what you sell?
Proudly, I would answer, yes I
do, if I didnt, then you would
refer to me as a professional
hypocrite! Whether a life
insurance policy, an annuity,
mutual funds or disability
insurance, I became my own
client and am thrilled that I
took my own advice.
I profess that everyone,
during their working years,
purchase a life insurance policy and a disability policy
while simultaneously investing money systematically into
quality stock mutual funds,
both foreign and domestic.
The addition of a variable
annuity allows for tax-deferral
of any growth realized in the
contract; while the mutual
funds though currently taxable, are reachable without a
government penalty prior to
age 59 for a home purchase,
an emergency need or a new
car. In my case those funds
were needed for my first home
purchase, cars and baby needs

as our family grew to 4 children. I started accounts for

each of our kids shortly after
their birth to accumulate for
college, a car for them and for
their retirement plans. While
still working I am funding all
of their accounts and the
retirement accounts for my

wife and I. However, should I

become disabled or die, insurance would swoop-in and save
the day and my family from
financial ruin. Every month I
continue to fund my mutual
funds and annuities, my IRAs
and my personal pension
plans.
I both preach and practice living below my means to
have the financial resources to
build and grow our money.
Over the three decades that
have passed since my entering
this industry, Ive had to use
some of the products I sold

myself, like health insurance

and the mutual funds I invested in to pay for my two older
childrens college expenses
taking absolutely no loans in
their names or mine. The
mutual funds continued to
grow over the contributions so
I had the opportunity to with-

draw again to purchase a second home, then a third and

more, all with no mortgages.
My Simplified Employee
Pension Plan (SEP) annuities
have grown to the point now
that they can support us during our retirement. When I
die, there will be additional
life insurance dollars to guarantee my wifes solvency and
continue to leave a bequest
and legacy for our children.
My wife and I have practiced what we preached for
over thirty years, utilizing the
identical plans, programs,

policies and strategies that we

professed and marketed to our
prospects and clients of the
day, of the months, of the
years and over the decades
that have gone by. As new
and improved innovations
presented themselves, it was
incumbent upon me to inform

my clients that an opportunity for upgrading was available

and in addition to myself and
family, they should upgrade
too!
These are the things that
a well-versed, competent, professional financial advisor
does for his clients and if your
financial planner is not working for you to this end, perhaps a change is in order.
Does he or she practice what
they preach and teach? It is a
great question that in my
opinion needs to be asked and
the answer given to you by

your financial advisor.

A few years ago, I almost
had to test my planning techniques by my wife potentially
filing a claim with my life
insurance carriers; I qualified
to receive payments on the
disability policies too. Further,
my designees required the
usage of 3 legal documents my
estate planning attorney prepared, the Health Proxy, the
Power of Attorney and the
Living Will! Fortunately,
everything and everyone was
prepared and empowered to
act on my behalf and with the
financial resources to do so. I
recovered from my cardiac
ordeal to write this column
today, five years later. Like
practicing a fire drill that we
hope will never be needed,
each of us must be prepared
for some bad news down the
road and what is becoming an
even bigger bout, the longevity game. Did you realize that
you might outlive your money
and resources? There is little
fear of that in my case and the
families I serve because of the
innovative products and
opportunities available in the
marketplace today. If your
portfolio does not enjoy the
same protection, perhaps you
should call me to discuss it! It
might only be a few minor
portfolio carburetor adjustments or you might require a
major revamping of everything, regardless, the exam
should be taken, just like the
fire drills you ran as a child in
school.

According to the National

Center for Education
Statistics, 60 percent of the
more than 662,000 masters
degrees awarded during the
2011-12 school year, the most
recent year for which statistics
are available, were earned by
women. The most popular
masters degree among
women was a Master of
Business Administration and
Management, with more than
45,000 such degrees awarded during the given time frame. Education and social work were the
second and third most popular masters degrees earned by women,
respectively. While business administration and management took the
top spot among women seeking masters degrees, the most popular
bachelors degree awarded to women during the same school year was
a Bachelor of Psychology, which was slightly more popular among
women than a Bachelor of Business Administration and Management.

Weeknight activities the whole family can enjoy

any families have

their own routines
on weeknights. Kids
may tackle their homework
before dinner, and once everyones plate is clean, family
members may spend time
together or go their separate
ways, spending time online
with friends or watching their
favorite television programs on
the couch.
Parents who feel their
weeknights dont include
enough family time are often
on the hunt for more familyfriendly activities the whole
family can enjoy even if everyone has to go to work or school
the next day. The following are
a handful of family-friendly
weeknight activities that can
bring families closer together.
Movie night: Family
movie night is a tradition for
many families, and parents who
want to spend more time
together as families may find
that movie night is a great way
to share a few laughs or even
facilitate discussions about
important topics broached in
certain films. Each week let a
different family member pick
that weeks movie and ask him
or her to explain his or her

choice and why they think its

a film the whole family will
enjoy. Let the kids join you as
you get the popcorn ready or
make special treats to enjoy
while the movie is playing.
Family walk: Walking is a
great way for parents to instill a
love of physical activity in their
children, and nightly walks
also make great opportunities
for families to leave their
devices behind and discuss the
goings-on in their lives.
Weather permitting, take a
family walk after dinner each
night, which can help make
your family healthier and
strengthen the bonds between
family members.
Writing activities: Another way families can escape
their devices and resist the
temptation of social media on
weeknights is to get together
for weekly writing sessions. Ask
each family member to create
brief lists on a range of topics,
whether its a list of favorite
books or countries each person
wants to visit or a bucket list of
things each family member
wants to do at one point in
their lives. Allow about 15
minutes for each person to
write his or her lists, and then

can help kids and adults alike

tap into their creative sides.
Solicit ideas when planning
craft night so everyone feels
like they played their part.
Nights together as a fami-

ly do not need to be limited to

weekends. Parents willing to get
a little creative can enjoy family-friendly evenings no matter
what day it happens to be.

including the inspiration

onto the lists.
Game night: Classic
board games or games like
checkers might not be as popular today as they were prior to
the advent of the Internet, but
that does not mean a night
centered around such games
does not still make for a very
family-friendly evening. Stock
up on some classic board games
and share the responsibility of
choosing which game to play
each week. Board games can
take up to a few hours to play,
and thats a great opportunity
for families to share some
laughs without being interrupt-

ed by their devices.

How to find a comfortable crate for your dog

any trainers and veterinarians recommend that dog owners buy dog crates as soon as
possible after buying or adopting a dog. A pet owners choice
of crate can go a long way
toward ensuring the dog reacts
positively to the crate.
The Association of
Professional Dog Trainers recommends the use of crates for
puppies and dogs as a shortterm training tool and as a safety precaution throughout the
dogs life. Crates can be invaluable in house training young
dogs and helping to curtail
destructive behavior, such as
chewing. As more people trav-

el with their pets, crates also

provide a safe and convenient
confinement option in the car,
on an airplane and in petfriendly hotel rooms.
Crates also offer a cozy
spot dogs can call their own.
Crates can feed dogs need for
security. When used correctly,
and not as punishment for a
dog, crates can serve as comforting retreats for dogs when
they need alone time.
Where to buy?
Crates can be purchased
at most pet supply retailers, and
they also are available at many
department stores, hardware
stores and online retailers.

Pet owners who desire certain

materials or have special
requirements of their dog crates
probably can find the biggest
selection at pet supply stores.
What size to get?
It is important to consider
the size of the dog when purchasing a crate. The crate
shouldnt be too big nor too
small. Choose a crate in which
the dog can sit up straight without banging its head on the top
of the crate. Dogs also should
be able to turn around with
ease and lie down on their sides
with paws extended.
Many pet owners make
the mistake of getting a larger

crate than is necessary. Dogs do

not like to soil in their sleeping
areas, but crates that are too
large may encourage pooches
to use one end as a bathroom
and the other as a sleeping
area, and ultimately that can
make dogs less enthusiastic
about crates. Also, crates that
are too large will not provide
the feeling of security dogs
crave.
According to Labrador
Training HQ, measure the dog
while he is standing upright
from nose to the base of the
tail. Add five to six inches to
this measurement, and that
will be an ideal length for the
crate. Also measure the dog

while he is sitting upright.

Again, add a few inches to the
measurement, and this will be
the minimum height of the
crate.
What about a growing puppy?
Some owners prefer to
upgrade crates as their dogs
grow. Budget-conscious pet
owners can buy a larger crate
and then use a divider to size it
down for puppy use. The
divider can be moved as necessary when the puppy grows.
What are the different crate
materials?
Crates come in plastic,
metal wire, wood, and nylon or

another fabric material. Each

has its own share of advantages
and disadvantages. Wire crates
are what many people envision
in a crate, and such crates are
among the most popular
because they provide ventilation, an easily cleaned floor
tray, folding capabilities, and
visibility for the dog. However,
some dog owners feel wire
crates bear too close a resemblance to cages.
Fabric crates can be cozy
and light, but dogs that are
prone to scratching and tearing
may be able to escape them
easily. Plastic crates can be
more private, and wood crates

Think taxes even after your

return is filed

fter you file your

2014 tax return, you
may want to forget
about taxes for a while. But
perhaps you should take
advantage of your current
familiarity with your financial situation instead. By acting now, you can make next
years return less taxing.
Here are suggestions.
Check your withholding
for 2015. The best indicator
that you need to change your
withholding is the bottom
line on your 2014 tax return.
A large refund means youve
given the IRS an interestfree loan money you could
have invested yourself. A
large balance due can mean

you end up paying penalty

and interest charges on top
of your regular tax liability.
To change your withholding,
give your employer an updated Form W-4. If youre newly
retired, you may need to start
making quarterly estimated
tax payments.
Maximize the benefit
you get from tax-deductible
contributions to a retirement
plan by making your 2015
contribution as early in the
year as possible. This extends
the time your account can
grow tax-deferred.
Establish your long-term
tax planning strategies.
Possibilities to consider: a
salary-deferral arrangement
with your employer, invest-

ing in assets that will appreciate rather than produce

current income, shifting
income among family members to take advantage of
lower tax brackets, and structuring your borrowing to
maximize interest deductions.
Get your tax and financial records organized. A
simple system to track and
store electronic or paper
records will save you from
the last-minute scramble to
pull your information together. An added benefit: Youll
be less likely to miss available deductions.
Give us a call to learn
about other strategies for easing your tax burden.

Going after grubs in your lawn

continued from page 19

from late summer to early fall.

Can grub damage be prevented?
Preventing grub infestation typically requires homeowners to keep watchful eyes
on their lawns. Pay particular
attention to areas that begin
to brown, especially areas that
are turning brown in spite of
adequate watering. An early
indicator of a grub infestation
is small grubs around the roots
of grass. In such instances,
applying insecticide may be
enough to prevent a small
grub problem from spreading.
Insecticides also can be
an effective preventative
measure for homeowners
looking to avoid grub infestations. Speak with a local landscaping professional for recommendations about which
insecticide to apply and how
best to apply it.

What can I do about grub

damage?
Attempting to treat
grubs in the spring may be
ineffective, as grubs are large
and no longer feeding in
spring. So homeowners dealing with grub infestations
should address the situation
before they retire their green
thumbs for the winter.
Remove debris from grub
infestations with a rake before
watering the affected areas.
Watering can help some damaged roots recover, but areas
that have been especially
damaged may need to be
reseeded.
Grub infestations can be
a nuisance to homeowners
who put lots of time and effort
into their lawns. But homeowners can take steps to treat
such infestations and prevent
them from returning the following summer.
