Executive Summary:
Bank Alfalah Ltd. Was started in june21st 1992 and Bank Alfalah was incorporated in 1997.
Abu dhabi group purchase the major portion of the share of Alfalah Bank so by this they
take the authority to handle the main operations of the bank. When the banks was privatized
by the Government they follows different strategies and policies in order to maximize its
revenue so that a healthy profit can be generated. Alfalah increases its operations by opening
new branches in different areas. Now there are 400 Branches of Bank Alfalah which are
operating in Pakistan.
Bank Alfalah is well-organized and it emphasize on justification of expenses rearrangement
of backend processing to increase output, they improve their customer service standard,
process efficiency and control the bank has taken the lead in introducing the new concept of
centralizing the trade services in the country by providing centralize foreign trade services to
branches with a view to improve competence, skill and reduce delivery cost.

During this internship course, I learned about different function performed by Cash
department, cheque department, Accounts opening department, financing department and
Customer service office department and operational department and all departments for
short period. I also learned about documenting procedure , requirements and record keeping
for different activities and especially the documentation requirement of different kinds of
financing facilities and at the time of opening new bank account. Bank Alfalah Ltd has a

Introduction

Company Background
Banks plays a vital role in the development and progress of economy in every country,
Habib Bank Limited (HBL) was running as a wholly owned subsidiary by the name of
Habib Credit and Exchange Bank (HCEB). The Abu Dhabi Group later acquired HCEB
(through the process of privatization), in 1997 and its name subsequently changed to Bank
Alfalah limited and it stands for (BAL) .Bank Alfalah has started their operations in 21june
1997 and it was registered under the companies Act 1984 and it commenced its operation in
1st November 1997.Alfalah Bank is registered in Karachi as well as in the Lahore stock
exchange by the name of (BAFL) .When Bank Alfalah wants to hire more employees then
each employee have to follow the particular purpose. Employees of Alfalah have to complete
its trial period before joining the Alfalah Bank. The main advantage of this exercise is that the
employees of Alfalah Bank are hired at low cost and in a better way. It is compulsory for each
employee of Alfalah to attend the two days training program in the year, these training program
will help the employee of this in order to understand the concept of banking and its different
operations like administration and the documentation, Leadership and Management skills.

INTRODUCTION

For the students of the Master of Business Administration at University of Gujrat there is
essential to submit the internship report. It is first chapter of our report which tells the
purpose of the study, scope and objectives. I did my internship requirement in BANK
ALFALAH branch Gujrat. The experience to work in that bank was very good. I try my best
to expand my knowledge and put my study experience in the banking field. Although time
was to short but I try my best to learn up to the standard.

Purpose
The purpose to do the internship report was to explore the learning of my practical field.
The main purposes are:

To know the banking operations.


To improve the report writing skills.
To gain the experience that will be helpful for me in the future.
To apply the best methodology procedure.
To know what sort of changes IT brings in managerial activities.

Scope
As an internee in bank alfalah the main focus of my study research was on general
banking procedures in one of the branch. These operations include remittances, deposits,
advances and foreign exchange. Similarly different aspects of overall of bank, are also
covered in this report. So this study from the relevant department will help me in my
practical and professional life.

Current Account:
Current Account is basically designed for those individuals or companies, associations, and
NGOS to meet their daily financial requirements which can be accomplished easily. Current
account is also suitable for the students because if student card is attached with the form of
current account opening then the minimum amount of deposit will be 1000rs. The current
account is expressed by 01 (e.g. 01000035). Following are the main features of the current
account

The minimum deposit require to open the current account is Rs. 5000.

The customer has to maintain the balance of Rs. 5000

For students the initial deposit to open current account is Rs.1000

Zakat is not deducted on current account

No interest or profit is paid on balance on current account.

PLS Saving Account:


PLS Saving Account is designed for individuals, salaried employees and household wives to
meet their daily small expenses of normal routine, PLS saving account can also be opened
by different companies or partnership firms. The saving account is denoted by 02 (e.g.
02001001). Following are the main features of the current account

The minimum deposit requires to open PLS account is Rs. 5,000/=.

The customer has to maintain the balance of Rs. 5,000/=.

Zakat is deducted from PLS saving account

Profit is paid semi-annually on credit balance in PLS saving account.

No of transaction is unlimited.

Up to a certain limit amount can be drawn without prior notice.

Kamyab karobar Account

It is a loan account. It is suitable for small business owners and for those who want to started
business. The loan can be obtained against some security have been made which show the
duration of loan and interest charged on it.

Royal Profit Account


Royal profit account is a saving account and provides profits to the customers after every quarter.
The minimum balance requirement for this account is Rs.50,000.Zakat is also deducted from this
account.ATM is also issued in it.

Fixed Account
It is a term deposit account and profit is distributed annually to the customers. A person need to
close the account if he has to withdraw amount from this account.ATM is also not issued in it.

Lockers
Lockers are widely available at branches of Bank Alfalah.Because of good security system
customers can place their belongings safely in these lockers and can operate the many time in the
banking hours. Insurance is also provided on the amount of stock in these lockers.

Car Financing
Bank Alfalah car financing facility is a very popular facility with all bank customers as it
facilitates them to pay for their car over a period of time (1-5 yrs) at less interest rates than its
competitors. It provide additional facilities of insurance and tracking devices in cars as well.

All brand new Pakistani assembled/manufactured cars (unregistered) and some are imported cars

In banking sector advance is the promise that carries the repayment of the original
amount plus an interest on the principal amount, extended as advance. The credit/advance is
given on the base of the confidence/trust and on the belief that the customer will be able and
willing to pay on the demand or at some future time. Alfalah is expanding its Advances
product portfolio to serve public financing needs better.

DEPOSITS:

Deposits act as a backbone of bank. It is the lifeblood of every bank. These deposits are
source of generating incomes for the bank and for the general public to meet the financial
needs. The bank accepts the deposits at a low rate of interest and lends it at higher rate of
interest, the difference between the lending and accepting rate is the source of income for
the bank.

Transfer of money or equivalent to money from one branch to another branch of the same
bank is called remittance. Now it has become an easier and safer method both for the client
and banker to transfer their money from one branch to another within the city or outside

includes the concepts of financial management course. As part of my internship I had to
make BBFS and CLP for different applicants that had applied for credit facility.
Documentation of new and renewal cases was also done by me I also used to call customers
and intimate them about the payment of markup, maturity date and other such activities.

Operations Department
The operations department is responsible for three major activities:
Clearing
Transfers
Remittances
Cash Transfers In large branches of Bank Alfalah, all these jobs are done by different
departments, but as Bank Alfalah Jhelum Branch is a small branch, all these jobs are
done by one department, known as operations. Operations department is sometimes also
known as the Transact department.

Foreign Remittances
Another type of remittances is foreign exchange transfer from another country to a
Bank Alfalah account in Pakistan, through moneygram. People used to come to receive
money sent by different countries by their relatives. I used to verify the identity and pin code
from the system and fill the form.

Cash Transfers

The cash transfers in the transact department are responsible with the cash deposits and
withdraws made by Bank Alfalah Jhelum Branch account holders. There are two types
of cash withdraws and deposits. The first is when a Bank Alfalah Jhelum Branch
accountholder either deposits or withdraws cash, while the second one is when a Bank
Alfalfas account holder, with an online account can withdraw or deposit money to his
account from the Jhelum Branch branch. As part of my internship, I was responsible to
collect cheques from the customers that they deposited, put the official stamps on the
different kinds of cheques, register their turn cheques in a register and make OBC
schedules. payment of markup, due dates, acceptance of proposal

I have done six weeks internship in different departments of Bank Alfalah. It is my first time
of experience to work in such type of dynamic organization. It is a great opportunity for me
to implement the course which I have been studied while doing an M.com, and soon I

realize that this banking sector is more close the those courses which I have been studied I
this program of M.com).the employees of the Alfalah Bank was very experienced and they
know how to deal with the internee so that the internee can learn more about the bank and
can apply all the material which he was studied in his course of M.com. The staff of Bank
Alfalah is more corporative and humble. The way a Bank should deal with its customer so
that more depositor comes to open an account ,this phenomena is very well understood by
the Bank Alfalah ,and if the internee do well in its tenure they also offer a handsome job to
him, so by this way they create a lot of opportunity for its internee to learn more about the
Banking rules and regulations in the better way, Therefore I select this dynamic organization
for the purpose of doing an internship program which is compulsory for the every student of
M.com.

Department wise task performance


Cash Department
During my internship tenure I got a chance to sit in the cash department in order to learn the
dealing of cash, the cashier of Alfalah bank assigned me to prepare a list of utility bills like
PTCL bills, electricity bills, and Sui gas bills. There is an separate excel sheet is prepare to
record the daily received bills by the bank. In this bank I also learn that how I can create a daily
list of each utility bills receiving .The balance of the list should be equal to the amount of the
utility bills so that it can be posted easily. And a cheques detail was prepared presented or
deposited for collection. In the cash department there are different sectors like receive and issue
cash against the pay in slip and cheques respectively, payments received against the utility bills
for telephone, electricity, and Sui gas. . There are two types of token which is issued by the

This facility is introduce by the Alfalah Bank in order to facilitates his valued customers if a
customer gets the deposit token from the counter then he should have to wait for its token
number for the deposit of a cash so no long lines is required in order to deposit the cash.

This facility is introduced by the Alfalah Bank in order to facilitates his valued customers. If a
customer gets the withdrawal token from the counter then he should have to wait for its token
number for the withdrawal of a cash so no long lines is required in order to withdrawal the cash.

Cheques Section
After working in the cash department I was transferred to the cheques section. There I learned a
lot of things which is related to the cheques. I learned there about the cheques entering and
approval phase for clearing the cheque payment there were a lot of burden of work about
cheque daily new queries were there to learn, like cheque dishonored, finding the reasons. Now
a days if the cheque is of same bank and the cheque bearer want to transfer the amount of
cheque in his account so now it can be possible at same day. No long clearing requirement is
required but in this case but the account must be in Bank Alfalah who receives the amount of a
cheque.

Cheques of Same Branch or Internal Transfers

When a Banks customer having a account in Bank Alfalah, branch issues a cheque to the
other party against any transaction and the receiving party bring the cheque in the bank for

receiving payment. If the cheque is open then the customers can get the payment by
presenting the cheque on cash counter if there is sufficient balance in the issuer accounts. If
cheque is crossed then the customer having cheque has to deposit by filling a cheque deposit
slip in his account and the receipt should be signed through the cheque department officer, if
the party has an account in the same bank. The bank will verify the cheque firstly and then
will give the credit by debiting the issuer account by following this procedure the payment
can be made in a same day.

Cheques of Other Banks:


If a person who deposits a cross cheque in the Bank Alfalah, G-9 branch for collection and
the cheque is of another bank (suppose HBL, Islamabad), then G-9 branch will cross
(special crossing) the cheque and send the cheque to its that branch which is located near the
HBL, Islamabad. When Islamabad branch will collect the cheque from G-9, it will send to
HBL for clearing. If there is balance in the issuer party, the HBL will give a National Bank
cross cheque in favour Bank Alfalah, Islamabad branch by debiting party account. Bank
Alfalah, Islamabad will deposit this cheque in his customer account in the NBP and will
give a credit to H.O Account and simultaneously will send a credit advice (called IBCA) to
Bank Alfalah, G-9 branch. On receiving of credited advice from the corresponding bank, the
bank will debit the H.O Account and will give credit to the customer account after the
deduction of bank charges by this the amount an crossed cheque would be achieved.

It is the desk in which Bank Alflah welcome the each customer who enter in the bank for the
purpose of deposit and withdrawal of a cash with the bank. On this desk there is one who was
dealing with the entering person.
The task which was assigned to coordinate with the dealing person I also noted the data of
entering person and guided them to the right way about withdrawal of payment and for the
purpose of depositing the cash in the bank. Further I learned that how to deal with the new
customers in a humble and polite way. There I often filled the paying slip for cash deposit and
cheques deposits.

I this department I learned the procedure of a car financing. When a customer comes to lease of
car and they demand a installment plan for a particular car in order to lease a car from the
bank. When the customer receive a installment plan then he fills the application form for
leasing a particular car, application should contain a request for leasing a car from the bank and
its color ,model ,company and two references. Bank receives a fee which is non refundable and its
amount is 5000rs. After following a specific procedure, then the customer makes the downpayment
which is 25% of the value of a car, and gives to the bank postdated cheques. When the process is
completed then, a quotation is sent to the car dealer for the specified car that this particular car
should be delivered to our customer. Then the car is registereg through the exercise and taxation
officer so that the car number is allotted and all this process is held through proper procedure. When
all this procedure is completed then the bank deliver the key of the car to its customer and then

The Bank Alfalah has a plan to become a pioneer bank of the banking fields for this purpose
bank is making a lot of efforts and have done very well but I found some flaws there and
want to suggest some In achieving its mission and in order to get the maximum profits,
Bank Alfalah is gaining a lot of profit due to its effective policies and strategies. There are
different problems takes place in Bank Alfalah, some of the major problems are observed by
me and I mentioned the following problems

o Mostly there is a need of equipments in G-9 branch. And Bank Alfalah has a latest technology
based machines like ATM, fax machine, printers and photocopy machine, it has been observed
most of the times machines fails to performed the specific task which is assigned to machine .
So these all things should be up to dated and a proper technician is available to solve the
particular problem.

o In Alfalah there are many training centers in Lahore as well as Karachi but the main

problem is that it is only for the officers not for the lower staff so, so there should be a
proper training program for lower staff also.

o job advancement procedure for lower staff of Bank Alfalah is slow due to many reason. The
main problem which I observed that lack of motivation to lower staff members so Bank
Alfalah should give them chance to new opportunities. There should be opportunity for the
lower staff to up graded properly.

o As the account holders of the Alfalah bank is normally corporate sector so there is a main
problem of clearness of the cheque. Customers have to wait for a long so more employees
should be recruited for the said rushed departments especially cash department.
Inexperience person are not performing well due this efficiency is reduced and many of the
time they misbehaved with the cashier.

o Competitors are getting away by way of providing new needed products and Bank
Alfalah have a lot of variety of products. Main problem I observed that Alfalah is not
introducing a latest and innovative products like self depositing machine as introduced by
the standard chartered Bank.

o There is no department which creates relationship with the customers valued in account.
Thats why there are no large companys accounts. A separate department should be maintained
for relational matters in order to maximize the bank profit.

o Most of the employees offer prayer in conference room as there is no separate room for
prayers. Also a separate room should be made for sorting of vouchers and most of the time

this activity is done in conference room which is not a proper location for this purpose. There
should be separate room for prayer and vouching.

o Employees always work for the incentive purposes so a special incentive scheme should
be introduced for motivating the employees of Bank Alfalah
o The space of G-9 branch is very congested and no proper arrangement of sitting for the
customers so they should hire a new and open space building.
o There should be a proper token system which record the time of issuing of token till the
time of its clearing so the efficiency of the cash department can be checked in a better
way.

Conclusion
Due to the lot of help of branch members, now I am able to gain some experience of
new things which are compulsory in order to take the knowledge regarding banking sector
and different workings of banks. Now I can easily deal with the public with respect to many
different workings of bank. I can easily fill up the different types of receipts which are used

for the purpose of depositing money in the banks and can also gives some guideness
regarding the requirement of account opening and the finance department of the bank.
Finally I concluded that Alfalah is the best organization for those persons who wants to
build his long term career workings. The overall workings and environment of the bank is
very comfortable and the staff is so helpful and respectful of each other so by this they can
maintains a professional environment.

Employees of Alfalah G-9 branch are hard workers and they work for an extra working hour
so that the entire workings take place in a very friendly atmosphere and no employees of the
Alfalah bank is pressurized while during his work. The employees of the Alfalah bank are
more loyal and committed to his work. This G-9 branch of Alfalah relatively small but due
to the more efforts of the employees of Alfalah Bank they are generating a healthy profit.

In Bank Alfalah G-9 branch I apply a lot of things which I have been study I have been
study in our course of MBA and this will help me to build my long term banking career.
