Note: The first studio Parker following the 1942-44 recording ban, and
the first small group studio recordings.
- Announcement (2:59)
Note: The third part of a staged alto showdown featuring Benny Carter
(who does "Tea for Two") and Willie Smith (performing "Body and Soul").
A performance of "Ornithology" appears here in the discographies and on
the Philology and Masters of Jazz CDs. It sounds like New York 1949, so
I've placed it there.
Note: Parker's first recordings after his return from California. The
studio is sometimes referred to as "Harry Smith Studios."
5. Ko-Ko (4:12)
Note: A concert featuring Gillespie's big band and Ella Fitzgerald.
Parker played as a guest star in the quintet format for one set.
for John LaPorta, and "Don't Blame Me" for the Lennie Tristano Trio.
BBS Session No. 65 identifies two versions of "The Way You Look
Tonight," one supposedly appearing on Philology Volume 5/6. The tune
does not appear on that CD. The only version of the tune that might be
from the Argyle that I know of is the unissued Davis-only version listed
between 22 and 23.
Note: This item starts toward the end of Don Byas' solo, then Hot Lips
Page and Sidney Bechet solo. Davis is next. The item ends during the
third chorus of Parker's solo.

16. Cool Blues (Ember 6:50; Bird Box 7:03)
17. 52nd Street Theme (Ember 2:05; Bird Box 2:13)
Note: On the Sony set the chatter with Symphony Sid and some of the
"52nd Street Themes" have been edited out.
Bird Box and Sony claim that this session was recorded on June 30, but
this seems unlikely given that Navarro died of tuberculosis on July 7
and that his playing on this session is quite good. Dan Morgenstern, in
the liner notes for the Sony set, acknowledges this and points out that
"Ira Gitler, who saw Fats at Birdland in 1950, recalls him as a
shrunken, pitiful figure, racked by coughing and playing feebly. But
available clues have been checked and rechecked, and June 30 is the date
that comes up."
In notes to the Ember set, Robert Bregman suggests a date of May 15-16,
1950. The varied personnel suggests a Monday night -- these were "jam
session" nights at Birdland. Parker's working quintet at the time
comprised Red Rodney or Kenny Dorham, Al Haig, Tommy Potter, and Roy
Haynes; but both Navarro and Powell were part of the Birdland house band
during this period. In Bird's Diary: The Life of Charlie Parker 19451955, Ken Vail suggests that these titles were spread over a week,
May 17-23.

2. Scrapple from the Apple (15:16)
3. Happy Bird Blues (2:49)
Note: First issued by as The Happy Bird. "Lullaby in Rhythm"
incorrectly listed as "I May Be Wrong."
A fourth title, "I Remember April," is usually included, but it is
clearly from another (later) session. See below at December 8-14, 1952.
1. Night in Tunisia
2. How High the Moon/Ornithology
3. Embraceable You (2:51)
4. Hot House (3:46)
Note: A wild party where most of the participants, including Parker,
took off their clothes. You can hear cries of "take it off" during the
striptease performed to "Embraceable You," one of the two issued takes.
Note: "Dynamo A" and "Dynamo B" were the working titles of GillespieParker tunes from the forties. The latter sounds like "Confirmation."
