COURSE OBJECTIVES
1 To establish an understanding of the fundamental concepts of mechanics of deformable
solids; including static equilibrium, geometry of deformation, and material constitutive
behavior.
2 To provide students with exposure to the systematic methods for solving engineering
problems in solid mechanics.
3 To assess stresses and deformations through mathematical models of beams, twisting bars or
combinations of both.
4 To discuss the basic mechanical principles underlying modern approaches for design of
various types of structural members subjected to axial load, torsion, bending, transverse shear,
and combined loading.
5 To build the necessary theoretical background for further structural analysis and design
courses.
COURSE OUTCOME
(a)
To understand the basic theory and applications of the fundamental principles, and
mechanics of deformation of materials.
(b) To perform stress analysis of a member under axial loading, torsion, transverse
loading, and their combination.
(c) To use modern laboratory techniques, skills, and/or equipment effectively.
(d) To perform stress and strain transformations, determine principal stresses and strains,
and apply failure theories.
(e) To understand the role of experimental work to complement analytical methods
(f) To relate concepts in mechanics to everyday life experiences.
