PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

1.0

PURPOSE

To provide guidelines for the management of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)


including correct selection, supply, use, replacement, maintenance, training and storage.

2.0

POLICY

All employees shall be provided with appropriately selected personal protective


equipment to protect the employee from the work environment and the physical elements
within the workplace. The selection will be based on the job performed.
Employees shall use correctly the personal protection equipment provided for his or her
use.
All personal protective equipment shall be maintained in good working order and in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Where any item of PPE shows signs of
deterioration it shall be replaced.
All personal protective equipment shall comply with current quality standards.
Substandard equipment is hazardous, and will not be acceptable for use at this plant.

3.0

RESPONSIBILITIES

The HSE Coordinator shall be responsible for:

Ensuring that that when personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary for the
protection of any individual, it is readily available.
Assisting Departmental Managers and other staff with the selection, use and storage
of PPE.

Departmental Managers/ Supervisors shall be responsible for:

Implementing the policy in their area of responsibility


Ensuring appropriate selection of PPE
Ensuring staff and health and safety representatives are consulted in relation to
selection, use and training in relation to PPE

Employees shall be responsible for:

Using PPE that is provided


Not placing themselves or others at risk of injury
Participating in consultation processes associated with selection, use and training in
relation to PPE.
Storing and caring for PPE according to guidelines provided by the HSE Coordinator.

PROCEDURES

The minimum PPE requirement on the plant site includes Hard Hats, Safety Glasses and
Steel Toed Shoes.
When additional safety equipment, such as protective clothing, gloves, respirators, eye
protection, hearing protection, etc., is required in specified areas for certain job functions,
such safety equipment must be provided and used by all persons affected.
The supervisors of the department in conjunction with the HSE Coordinator will
determine job specific PPE requirements.

The following guidelines are provided:


Head protection - Hard Hats shall be worn with the bill faced forward. When working
where there is a hazard due to moving equipment, sparks, etc all employees are to keep
their hair tucked under their hard hat, tucked in their shirt, or other protective head
covering. Do not paint or drill on your hard hat.

Eye protection - Safety glasses will be provided and must be worn in all areas of the
plant. Safety glasses can save your eyes. Where a job may involve additional activities
that increase the potential for eye injury or is being performed adjacent to an operation
with greater potential for injury, safety eye wear offering more protection shall be used.
Contact lenses are allowed.

Hearing protection- In various areas of the plant the use of hearing protection devices
such as earmuffs, earplugs, etc., is required for the protection of your hearing. Signs,
other marking systems, or your supervisor will indicate to you when and where such
noise protective devices must be worn in accordance with plant wide hearing protection
program and will be subject to annual hearing test.

Foot Protection- Safety shoes have and will continue to protect the foot from serious
injury. Employees shall wear the steel toed boots provided. Work shoes should be high
top (six inches or more) unless the employee has a medical condition preventing this.
Shoes must be maintained in good repair for safety and comfort.

Clothing- Access to the production areas will require flame retardant apparel. Shirts and
coveralls shall be long sleeved. Clothing should be snug fitting. Do not wear ragged
clothing or have any loose ends around moving machinery. All shirts should be tucked
into pants.

Respirators- Respirators that are suitable for the intended purpose will be provided when
such equipment is necessary to protect the health of the employee. PPE requirements for
all work on the Port shall include ammonia respirators. The employee must use the
respiratory protection in accordance with instructions and training received. Your life
may depend on it. A beard or moustache may interfere with the proper wearing of a
respirator and is not allowed.
