NEED HELP WITH YOUR KNITTING?

To ensure your knitting has the same

measurements as the pattern, its a good
idea to make a tension swatch before you
start your project. A tension swatch is a small
sample of your knitting where you count the
stitches and rows and check them against
the tension given in the pattern. (If you get
MORE stitches/rows than the patterns tension,
it means your knitting is tighter. If you get
FEWER, it means your knitting is looser.)
Stocking stitch:
10 cm/4 = 16 stitches
10 cm/4 = 22 rows

Now start shaping the top of the hat:

knit the 1st stitch, knit 2 stitches
together, purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches,
purl 2 stitches. Repeat the section
inside the little stars another 8 times,

From now on, always work the section

THE STITCHES

All of the knitting techniques are made using

the Basic Stitches on the back of the pattern.
-Garter stitch
Knit every row.
-Increasing stitches
You can increase the width of your knitting
by making extra stitches on your needle (see
basic stitches).
-Decreasing stitches
Instead of knitting only one stitch at a time,
knit two stitches together. Insert the front of
your right needle through the two first stitches
of the left needle then knit them together as a
single stitch.

SEWING UP YOUR PROJECT
1

Fold your knitted piece in half (with the

right side facing out) so that the two
short sides meet - sew these up using
the invisible vertical seam technique.
Next, sew the top of the hat (the cast off
edge) using the invisible horizontal seam
technique.

Weave in the ends.

When you make your swatch, make sure

it is large enough for you to measure
10 cm/4 without including the stitches/
rows closest to the edges (as these often
have a slightly different tension). When youre
done swatching, simply unravel and re-use
the yarn to start knitting your Katknits Hat.
10 cm/4 = 9 stitches
10 cm/4 = 11 rows

HOW TO KNIT YOUR KATKNITS HAT

Cast on 42 stitches.

Work in stocking stitch for 28 rows.

To ensure your knitting has the same

BASIC STITCHES
SLIP KNOT

CABLE CAST ON

There are several ways to cast on. We like

the method given here as it gives a neat finish
to the edge of your work.

KNIT STITCH

This is the basic knitting stitch. By knitting

every row you will create what is known
as garter stitch which has the same
appearance on both sides.

PURL STITCH

When you knit the yarn is at the back

of your work but when you purl, the yarn
is at the front.

CAST OFF

INCREASING

To increase the width of your knitting you can

increase by making extra stitches on your needle.
Knit one stitch. Hold your needles apart and you
will see a loop of yarn from
the row below between the needles.

1
Hold the yarn in your left hand approximately
40cm (15.9) from the end.

1
1
Make a slip knot on a needle. Holding the
needle and the tail in your left hand take
the right hand needle and insert it through
the slipknot (stitch) so the left needle
is crossed over the right needle.
Using your right hand, wrap the long end of
the yarn behind the needles and bring it around
and between the needles.

2
Make a loop as shown.

3
Slip the loop on to a needle and pull it tight.

2
Bring the tip of the right hand needle under
the left hand needle and catch the loop on
the left needle.

1
Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand
and the empty needle and ball end of the yarn
in your right hand. Insert the tip of the right

and over the second stitch and the tip of the right
needle. Now you will have only one stitch on
your right needle.

stitch left on the needle, remove needle.

With your right hand wrap the yarn from the ball
behind the needles and then between
the two needles.

2
Bring the tip of the right needle under the left
needle and catch the loop.

1
Using the left needle pick up the loop of yarn.
2
With your right hand pull the yarn to the front
of your work then wrap the yarn around the right
needle and between the needles back to the front
of the needles.

WEAVING IN ENDS

weave the 40cm (15.9) tail into the knitting.

STARTING A NEW BALL OF YARN /

CHANGING COLOUR

When you come to the end of your ball of yarn,

finish the row but leave a tail of at least 30cm
(11.8). With the new ball tie a loose knot on to
the tail and slide it up to the needle.

Weave the ends of your yarn into your knitting

to finish it off and stop it from unravelling.
3
Hold the needles side by side.

4
Insert the tip of the left needle up the stitch
on the right needle and release the right needle.
You now have two stitches on the left needle.

Insert the needle between the two stitches,
wrap yarn around the right needle and bring
through. Transfer the new stitch back onto
the left hand needle. Repeat step 5 until you have
the correct number of stitches cast on.

Using the right needle knit the loop you picked up

the yarn will be tight when you knit the extra stitch
this is how it should be). If you are increasing on
a purl row it is done the same way.

Weave the yarn along the edge of your knitting

as shown in the diagram.
