Marina of The Year

By IVA DANFORD - NAISARA
Fijis premier marina facility,
Port Denarau Marina, which is also
the hub of the integrated Denarau
Island Resort won the category of
International Marina of the Year
at the Marine Industries Association (MIA) Awards Dinner in Gold
Coast on Tuesday, May 5..
Port Denarau Marinas Managing Director, Mr Nigel Skeggs said,
this is an incredible achievement
both for their team and Fiji as a
destination.
We have strived to develop a
product that contributes to the variety of offerings in Fijis tourism
market while driving the financial and social contribution to the
outer islands of Fiji by attracting
these tourists to our shores, says
Skeggs.
He said in developing a marina
they have been very isolated and
to receive this recognition from
their peers is incredibly satisfying
and recognition that not only are
they doing it right but they are a
leading marina globally.
It does not get any better than
this and I am very proud of our
success. I would like to thank our
board for their support and vision

and for our great team for bringing
it to fruition, he said.
Skeggs said this is an award that
all of Fiji can be proud of and firmly
cements the nation as a yachting
tourism destination.
As I have told my team, we
are allowing ourselves some time
to enjoy and celebrate our success but more than ever we must
continue developing and ensuring
that we offer the level of service

expected from an international

award winning marina.
The awards were part of the
Marine15 International Conference and Trade Exhibition which
was held on the Gold Coast from
May 3-5.
According to the Annual Fijian
International Yachting Visitors Survey, which is conducted each year
by Port Denarau Marina as an aid
to market Fiji as a destination for

this valuable segment of the tourism sector, there has been a sharp
increase in numbers, with the total value of yachting tourism to the
Fijian economy for 2014 sitting at
over $39.5m.
TThe MIA is the peak industry body for the marina industries
in Australia, Asia and the Pacific
regions and is dedicated to the
needs of marina owners and operators of berthing, mooring, storage

and slipway/workshop facilities

connected to sailing, cruising and
general boating.
Port Denarau Marina headed
out the other finalists in this category of Port Montenegro in Europe,
Albany Marina in the Bahamas and
Westhaven Marina in Auckland,

Assistance to
Farmers in West
By IVA DANFORDNAISARA

Western
farmers
have received a boost
in their farming career
as Vodafone ATH Fiji
Foundation and Western Charity Alliance
once again assisted
them in the provision
of vegetable seeds to
improve their farming
strategies.
More engagement
from other CSOs and
government sector is
needed to boost agriculture in our nation at
the same time to improve the livelihoods
of our low income
earned farmers, says

Vodafone Project Officer Jitendra Naidu.

He said they have
been working with
Farmers in Rakiraki,
Tavua and Ba area to
improve farming and
to benefit their community.
Farmers and general
public can also receive
free farming tips via
their mobile through
mFarmacy
program
which is absolutely
free. The message will
be broadcasted on
daily basis and farmers
and other individuals
with interest in farming
can take full advantage
of it.

more youth into farming under Youths Feed

We are very thankful to Mr Valami Divisional Youth Officer

He added that they

are also looking very
closely on income generating projects for the

Youths
and women in local

their livelihood.

Night-Work Begins on Votualevu Roundabout

Night works began at the
Votualevu Roundabout in
Nadi earlier last month and
is expected to continue for
the next 6 to 8 weeks as
changing lane restrictions
and traffic controllers will
be in place.
The night shift will be
from 6.00pm in the evening
through to 6.00am the following morning.
Fiji Roads Authority has
advised all travellers passing through Votualevu
Roundabout of the commencement of intermittent
night time working by the
contractor.
FRA
NASRUP
Programme Manager, Zaina
Khan said night time work

is not suitable for all aspects of complex capital

works projects.
We have arrived at a
point in the Nadi project
where we can allow for
some night time working
such as pavement surfacing works. However a great
percentage of our work
will still take place during
the day, she said.
Ms Khan said this is because they cannot compromise on safety and quality
when complex utility relocations and construction are taking place, also
night time working is risky
in terms of safety and the
shift work can be exhausting on their workforce.

Over this period, the

contractor will be intermittently operating on a
24-hour basis, in two shift
patterns; day and night, on
the Votualevu Roundabout
until lane restrictions are
lifted.
FRA and our project
teams are aware of the
heightened congestion issues currently being experienced along our most
active construction sites
as pedestrians, vehicular
traffic, utilities relocation
and road construction all
compete for space within
the road corridor.
The best remedy is for
the project team is to open
restricted sections as early

as we can to reduce the

overall disruption to the
community wherever possible, she said.

Motorists and pedestrians are requested to take

more time for night travel.

Village Leaders in Navosa Participate

in Effective Leadership and Good
Governance Training
Turaga-ni-Koros, women
and youth leaders of the villages of Toga and Natawatawadi from the Tikina of
Naqalimare in the province
of Nadroga/Navosa are currently undergoing an Effective Leadership and Good
Governance Training facilitated by the Citizens Constitutional Forum (CCF) in Toga
village.
Effective
leadership
plays a vital role in the development of good governance
practices in all communities and institutions. This
workshop aims to address
the capacity needs of leaders increasing their skills
and knowledge which helps
them become effective leaders in their communities and
organisations, said CCFs
Community Education and
Field Officer, Sereima Lutubula.
CCF believes that a character of a good leader is
fundamental to the success
of their leadership style. A
strong character of integrity,
honesty and a proactive ap-

proach to challenges is vital.

This training is conducted
for the first time for the two
villages and CCF hopes to
educate and build leaders
capacity in areas of good
governance and leadership,
enabling a participatory approach to their projects and
avoiding top-down hierarchies. CCF hopes to equip
leaders with the knowledge
to conduct their own needs
analysis with their communities to identify development projects.
From previous CCFs
community education workshops it has been identified
that villages need more capacity building in developing project plans and writing simple project papers.
Through this workshop CCF
aims to build the capacities
of communities in proposal
writing for development
projects.
The training will also
provide practical project
writing skills and information so they can learn how

Western Police
National Sports
Day
By IVA DANFORDNAISARA

The Western Division

Community Policing has
come up with a new initiative to involve all the schoolleavers and unemployed
youths between Nadroga
to Rakiraki corridor in this
years National Sports Day
which is going to be held on
June 26-27.
The event is focused on
the theme of Engaging
and Empowering Youths in
Sports and is also in line
with the Government of the
days new National Capacity
Building.
Divisional Manager Community Policing Western A/
ASP Petero Tuinirarama says
with their targeted group as
youths from all the 30 police
post in the western division
and their mission is to get
them away from engaging
themselves in criminal activities.
We want them to go
back and be good citizen
and fight alongside the law
enforcing officers in their
own districts, A/ASP Tuinirarama said.
He said there is no fee to
be paid in this sports day and
this will be a life changing

experience for them.

This will be the biggest
thing done by the western
division community policing
and we will also be proving the youths with accommodation for the two day
event, he says.
A/ASP Tuinirarama believes the reason they have
youths as their targeted
groups is that youths are the
most crime committers in
the country.
There will be four sports
played during the day and
one police post can bring
two to three teams per sport.
The sports include sevena-side rugby, soccer, netball
and volleyball.
A\ASP Tuinirarama said
there will also be prize money for the winners and the
runners up for every sport,
as well as the best player.
He said rugby will have
$1000 for the winner, $500
for the runners up and $100
for the best players.
Whereas for soccer, netball and volleyball will have
$500 for the winning team,
$250 for the runners-up and
$100 for the best player.
The National Sports Day
will be held at ground 2 and

ment projects and how to
utilize the strengths in their
community, said Ms Lutubula.
Similar training were
successfully conducted in
Tikina Noikoro in the villages of Nakoro, Navitilevu,
Vatubalevu and Namoli,

Tikina Namataka in the villages of Draiba, Keiyasi, Nasaucoko and Tikina Bemana
in the village of Tuvu, which
is located in the highlands
of Navosa. CCF has noted
immense positive developments in these villages.
Many villages now have

a fair idea of how to financially support themselves

and their family and to also
manage their groups and
committees in a more transparent and fair manner, Mrs
Lutubula said.
The
United
Nations
Strengthening Citizens and

Engagement in Fiji Initiative

(SCEFI) supported this training.
The training was held on

Student Designers to Get

More Support

By IVA DANFORDNAISARA
Student designers in this
years Fiji Fashion Week had
a timely boost in their participation as the Australian
High Commission and the
Fashion Council of Fiji announced their support for
them.
The two contributing parties will have their own contribution to the students.
Three student designers
will be sponsored by the
Australian High Commission to help them prepare
in showcasing their work at
the Fiji Fashion Week.
On the other hand, Fashion Council has facilitated
the selection of the student
designers, and will provide
mentorship and technical
assistance as they prepare
to debut their collections.
Fashion Council chairperson Faraz Ali said they are
proud and grateful that the
Australian High Commission has agreed to partner
with them to alleviate some
of the financial pressure on

student designers so that

they can truly put their best
efforts into their capsule
collections at Fiji Fashion
Week.
My team and I at the
Fashion Council are very excited about the future of our
nascent industry. Naturally,
this future is dependent
upon new talent, said Ali.
Additional
Australian
Government support for the
fashion industry in Fiji includes the provision of two
Australia Award scholarships for fashion studies in
2014 and Australia-Pacific
Technical College courses
on garment construction.
Australian High Commissioner Margaret Twomey
said every designer needs to
start somewhere.
We hope these sponsorships will give budding
designers the confidence
they need, enabling them
to focus their creative energies on making their Fashion
Week entries the best they
can be, said Commissioner

Regional Forum discusses Technical

Training Financing and Reforms
By IVA DANFORDNAISARA

Discussions on how to
help identify priority actions to narrow skills gaps
and combat unemployment rates took place at
the Tertiary and Vocational
Education and Training
(TVET) Financing Forum
in Novotel Hotel, Nadi on
May 4-5.
This was part of a regional research initiative
commissioned by the Australian Government into
the financing of technical
training in the Pacific.
DFAT Counsellor for
Regional Health, Education and Gender, Sheona
McKenna said the study
came about in response
to calls from Pacific Ministers for Education for a
more market-driven and
relevant TVET platform to
drive economic growth in
their countries.
The research findings
and resulting discussions
at this Forum help to identify priority actions to narrow skills gaps, combat
unemployment rates and
ensure TVET courses are
relevant and of high qual-

ity, she said.

McKenna said this can
in turn increase opportunities for broader sources of
funding of technical training, including from the private sector.
Working with Pacific
governments, education
providers and industry
stakeholders, the Australian Government has invested in vocational skills
development across the
region and supported evidence-based reform in
vocational and technical
training.
Executive Chairman of
the Fiji Higher Education
Commission Dr Richard
Wah, who was also present at the Forum, said it
is good to know that the
TVET developments that
have been supported by
the Government of Fiji
over the last two years are
in line with the findings of
the research.
We thank DFAT for the
opportunity to be able to
learn from our regional
partners and international
researchers, he said.
The Forum brought together sixty policy makers,
researchers, practitioners,
donors and NGOs from
across the region to share

experiences and stimulate

policy dialogue on how the
technical training sector is
financially supported at national and regional levels.

The research analysed

existing financing systems
for technical training in
seven Pacific countries
which included Fiji, Kiri-

bati, Papua New Guinea,

Samoa, Solomon Islands,
Tonga and Vanuatu where
they also identified crosscountry issues and options

through which future financing for technical training could be more efficient
and effective for countries
and the region.

this MoU signing today reaffirms this special bond, said
Professor Rouse.
The MoU will establish
a cooperative partnership,
based on friendship and cooperation, for the purpose
of promoting mutual understanding, leading to the

Agriculture Incentives
Reaping Benefits

By IVA DANFORDNAISARA

We are very encouraged

to note that some industries
are already posting record
figures such as the honey
and poultry industry.
This was announced by
the chief economic officer
of the Ministry of Agricultures policy and statistics
division Mr Pauliasi Tuilau
on Day 3 of the Livestock
Sector Forum at Tanoa international Hotel in Nadi.
The honey industry is
almost 100 percent self
sufficient while the poultry
industry is around 80 90
percent. So we can see that
we are getting there and it is
indicative of Governments
investor friendly policies
towards improving supply
and at the same time, reducing our import bill, Mr
Tuilau said.
He
highlighted
that
Governments initiative to

enhance the agricultural

sector, in particular in the
livestock industry, will soon
come to fruition with stakeholders confirming that
positive results are being recorded.
His announcement was
supported by one of the largest Feed milling companys
representative Mr William
Greig of Crest Feed Mills
Limited.
He said, Right now 90 per
cent of their feeds are for
poultry while the rest is sold
to other livestock farmers,
but they are producing close
to 14 tonnes of feed per hour
so to make sure that they
have a sustainable poultry
industry.
We are other players
also coming into the poultry
sector such as Rooster poultry, Toa Fiji and other small
holder farmers which is an
indication that the poultry
sector is doing above expectations, Mr William said.
Mr Tuilau said Goodman
Fielders (Crest Chicken) is

also exporting its products

abroad especially in the region so that is also a good
sign of the increase in production levels,
He said in the dairy industry, they are still far off but
they have programmes, policies and initiatives in place
to improve the dairy industry as well.
The nations annual dairy
products (butter, yogurt and
others) consumption, requires around 70 80 million
litres of milk.
However Fijis current
annual milk consumption is
around 20 million litres per
annum which the local industry is only able to supply
only half of the figure.
Farmer, Joji Ramasima
who was a participant at the
forum said the potential opportunities for dairy farmers
are huge and he urged those
in the industry and those
planning to join the industry
to work together towards
meeting the demand.

Talanoa Session Heats Up In Nadi

By IVA DANFORDNAISARA

The Commissioner of
Police Ben Groenewald
and his command Group
around the Western Division conducted a talanoa
session in Nadi Civic Centre on May 26th.
Issues of noisy nightclubs, issuing firearms
to polices, and the need
of more police officers
arose during the discus8

sion.
If we look into the
incident that happened
a month ago in Nadi
Aerotown Mobil Service
Station, the crime scene
approach by the police
was totally unprofessional.
These were the words
of the Nadi Chamber of
Commerce and Industries President Dr Ram
Raju while highlight the
fact that police officers
should be given guns to
deal with these types of

situations.
Commissioner Groenewald regarded the
Aerotown incident as an
embarrassing act by the
Fiji Police Force and they
are looking for the introduction of a non-lethal
way of arming policemen
with taser guns.
I am not in favour of
issuing firearms to our
people. Yes, we do have
firearms but they are only
issued to our people during special circumstances, he says.

THE JET - FIJIS FIRST COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

He said the concept of

the taser meant enough
to allow the officer to arrest the criminal.
There were also a
number of complaints
received about drunken
roaming the main streets
of Nadi in the early hours
mostly from residents of
Martinatar where three
popular nightclubs are
located.
Andrea Wong a Martinatar resident for more
than 30 years said she has
been lodging her com-

plaint with the Police Namaka but was unhappy of

how the police handled
her complaints about the
issue.
Ive made a number
of complaints to police
about this and I was told
to One they said that I
should go straight to the
Prime Ministers office,
two put up with the noise
and the other option was
to move from where I
lived for more than 30
years, says Wong.
Responding to her is-

sue, the Commissioner

said it was unacceptable
for police officers to address the issue in such
manner and suggested
that an investigation be
carried out into the complaint.
He concluded in general the police officers
work involves protection of life and property
through the enforcement
of laws.

Livestock Industry, a Success in Fiji

By iVA DANFORD NAISARA

The Pacific Agriculture

Policy Project (PAPP) under
the Secretariat of the Pacific
Community (SPC) implemented a workshop which
allowed all stakeholders to
discuss issues affecting the
livestock industries in Fiji.
The national consultation, themed Livestock for
Livelihoods-new generation
thinking was funded by
the European Union held on
May 12-15 at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi.
While opening the Forum, Permanent Secretary
for Finance, Mr Filimone
Waqabaca said the main
aim of the forum was to
share information on the key
livestock constraints and opportunities available in Fiji.
The livestock sector
plays an integral part in rural
life in the Pacific and more
importantly in Fiji, he said.
It is estimated that over
60% of the rural population
participates in livestock related activities.
Mr Waqabaca said livestock is of economic importance, contributing on
average 9% of the total agricultural GDP of 12%.
He added livestock contribute to nutritional security through the provision
of meat, milk and eggs and

I think its great, shows a lot
of improvements over the past

we can try and make it to the

provide important farm inputs such as draught power
and manure to sustain crop
production for food and
feed.
He says livestock production and productivity in Fiji
has faced a lot of challenges
over the years, with its share
of successes.
The level of imports of
animal and animal products
into Fiji have been high due
to the shortfalls of livestock
production resulting in the
draining of foreign reserves
to meet the protein nutrient
requirements of the population from sources abroad,
he said.
Mr Waqabaca said the
Government intends to

maximize the opportunities

that are available locally and
support programs and activities that will strengthen
local initiatives and reduce
dependency on imports.
This also ties in well with
Governments emphasis on
supporting Fijian Made Initiatives.
He says todays multifaceted livestock industry and
fast changing world calls for
a close partnership.
Globalization presents
many challenges and opportunities to Fiji and as such
there is need to cooperate
with the aim of achieving
mutual benefits.
The forum highlighted
possible avenues for coop-

beneficial,
cutting-edge
strategies, which positively
impacted the livestock industries in Fiji.
Mr Waqabaca believed it
may be appropriate to organize resources and conduct
livestock sector reviews including assessment of policy
issues and options for food
security and poverty reduction.
Over the years, the Ministry has been focusing efforts
that are supportive of the
policies and projects that
would boost local production and self-sufficiency.
The Ministry of Agriculture has also been involved

This award was also a
boost to Fijis growth as a
yacht cruising destination.
The Minister for Industry,
Trade and Tourism Honourable Faiyaz Koya said the
recognition fitted in with
the government vision of
developing a tourism sector
based on quality of service.
Fiji is just not another
tourism destination, but a
destination that provides
that additional personal
touch, a destination where
people really care and a destination that leaves a lasting
impression on its visitors,
Mr Koya said.
He said the yachting industrys contribution to the
tourism sector was growing
every year and the Government was working with the
industry to provide the necessary support to ensure
that this growth was maintained.
Fiji is the hub of the Pacific and the ideal destination or stopover for yachts,
including super yachts,
hence it is important that
necessary infrastructure is
in place to maximise the returns from this industry.
As the premier marina
facility in Fiji, Port Denarau
continues to raise its standards internationally, as well
as add to its list new and exciting products.
Marina Industries Association President Andrew
Chapman said the competition for the Awards was the
strongest ever and record
number of entries had been
received from Australia and
other countries.
It is a sign of the growing
strength of the marina industries that we are celebrating
the excellent achievements
of the winners and finalists
at marine15, says Chapman.
Club Marine CEO Simon
McLean said the Awards
play an important role in
fostering business improvement across the marina industry.
Congratulations to the
winners, finalists and all the
entrants in the Awards. The
Awards process requires
time to reflect on ones business performance and this
in itself is a very healthy process, he said.

The latest addition to Port

Denarau Marina is the new
Denarau Yacht Club, restaurant and bar, the only private
function facility that is not
connected to a resort.

be the winning nominees to
receive the Employee of the

be recognised for displaying
true InterContinental service

The resort recently celebrated their annual Employee of the Year Awards
for 2014 and Out of the 24

voting poll to win this award.
The candidates were recognised as Employees of the

for exceptional service and
positive attitude towards
both guests and team members.
The InterContinental Recognition Program recognises
colleagues for Living the
Brand - service standards
which InterContinental employees live by.

to one of three behaviours;

Make it Memorable, Be
Charming and Stay in the
Moment.
Once one of
these categories have been
identified and recognised,

Card by their supervisor or
manager. Each recognition
card allows the opportunity
to enter the running for becoming Employee of the
Month.
There are two categories
for the Employee of the Year
awards; Front of House for
employees that interact with
guests and Heart of House
for those behind the scenes
who still find a way to shine.
Vaqonaqona, who took
home the award for the
Front of House as the Best
Frontliner, was awarded a
return Fiji Airways ticket to
Brisbane, Australia and a
five night stay in luxury InterContinental Sanctuary Cove
Resort.
Drawelaca, who won
the Heart of House award

member, walked away with
return Fiji Airways tickets
for two to any destination

night stay in any InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG)
property at that destination.
Area General Manager

South Pacific Erik Stuebe

said they want to show their
gratitude and reward the
achievements by recognising their efforts to establish
InterContinental Fiji as the
best resort to work for, and
for providing the best guest
experience.
The starting point for a
great guest experience is a
great team.
With each passing year
the resorts performance
always exceeds previous
successes. This could not be
possible without the relentless support from our dedicated team, said Stuebe.
Owned by Fiji National
Provident Fund (FNPF) and
managed by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the
resort provides services
that go beyond the worldrenowned Fijian warmth
and hospitality to give guests

Tourism Expo to Promote Local

Designers and Labels
By IVA DANFORD NAISARA

Local fashion designers

have been given a chance to
showcase their talents at the
Fijian Tourism Expo (FTE)
2015 and will be provided a
distinctive platform to market their labels next month.
FTE 2015 is also expected
to play a vital role in connecting local Fijian designers with the tourism industry stakeholders that will
eventually lead to readily
accessible Fijian Designed
and Made garments to the
600,000 plus international
visitors that grace Fijis
shores every year.
This has been made possible following the Fiji Fashion Week (FJFW) joining
Tourism Fiji as a partner for
the Expo.
FJFW Managing Director,
Ellen whippy-Knight says
the Fijian Tourism Expo is
the biggest event offering
access to major stakeholders in Fijis tourism industry.
Were excited to be involved with FTE because
its giving FJFW the opportunity to showcase locally
designed and made labels
to give these designers the
opportunity to network and
more importantly market
their label to internal and

external markets, she added.

FJFW, which is in its
eighth year of production
and a wide range of activities, is targeted to promote
the fashion industry in Fiji.
In 2014, FJFW received
over 3,000 guests over seven
Shows in one week. This
year, FJFW have at least
70 designers and over 100
models that took part at the
show.
85% of designers showing
at this years FJFW are locally designed and made in Fiji.
Tourism Fijis Director of
Events, Ms Sally Cooper says
the Fijian Tourism Expo is
all about Fiji and the community.
This includes Fijian
Made and Fijian Crafted and
so the opportunity to partner
with FJFW featuring Fijian
designers is important for
the event.
She added they would
like to see locally made Fijian products in all resort
boutiques as it is an opportunity to show case what can
be produced here, not only
to Fijis international visitors
but also local industry.
Tourism Fiji is a big supporter of FJFW and the opportunities it creates for the
community, Ms Cooper
adds.

New Aircraft Believed

To Create More Jobs

By IVA DANFORD NAISARA

The Acting Prime Minister

and Attorney General Honorable Aiyaz Sayed - Khaiyum
received the fifth new Boeing 737-800 Fiji Airways aircraft - the Island of Ovalau
on May 27 at the Fiji airway
hanger in Nadi International
Airport after having left the
Netherlands last weekend..
In welcoming the new
aircraft, Hon Khaiyum said
the aircraft will increase
frequencies and help go to
new destination.
The reality is with the arrival of the new aircraft and
with the frequency being increased to sustain jobs and
creates new jobs, he said.
He believes the new aircraft will require more crew
to come on board which
means more engineers and
more engineers means
more catering and so this is
a multipliers effect.
Fiji Airways Chairman
Nalin Patel says this new aircraft comes at an important
time for them.

It will contribute straightaway to our network, as we

prepare to start direct services between Wellington
and Nadi from June 25th on
Thursdays and Sundays all
year around, he said.
Mr Nalin adds the aircraft
will also allow them to add
an extra service from Christchurch, also making that a
twice-weekly connection to
Fiji all year round as wel.
Fiji Airways will also be
able to add more daylight
flights to Brisbane, as well
as extra frequencies on Fiji
Airways busy Auckland and
Sydney routes.
He said with this addition
to their fleet they become
larger and stronger and will
be able to further strengthen
their position as the leader
in aviation in the Pacific.
It aids us in developing partnerships within the
region, like the recently announced codeshare with
Air Vanuatu and partnerships we are looking to put
in place in Tonga, Mr. Patel
added.
The Island of Ovalau will
undertake its first flight on
Friday May 28.
