RESUMEN
ABSTRACT
Maize is the main staple food in the Mexican diet and is also the
most important irrigated crop. However, water shortage is very
serious in Mxico, and food security cannot be maintained without
irrigation. To address this problem, the effect of maize density
sowing was evaluated using a subsurface drip irrigation system.
There were no differences in forage and grain yield of the hybrid
Tigre (p>0.05), among treatments (T): T1) 0.75 m row spacing
and 90 000 seeds ha1;; T2) 0.75 row spacing and 133 000 seeds
ha1; T3) 0.4-1.1 m alternate row spacing and 133 000 seeds ha1.
Mean forage dry matter was 23.6 Mg ha1 and grain yield was
14.6 Mg ha1. Although leaf area index was not different among
treatments after silking, the number of ears per plant was higher
for T1 (1.1) compared to T2 and T3 treatments (0.9; p0.05).
Forage ear percentage was higher for treatments T1 and T3 (60
and 63%) with respect to T2 (53%; p0.05). Treatment T1 was
suitable for maize production using minimum tillage and
subsurface drip irrigation.

since the 1970s, self sufficiency has been lost, and now
there is a dependence on the importation of the grain.
Increasing grain yield per hectare is recognized as a better
alternative solution, rather than increasing the cultivatable
area. In Mxico, the maize grain yield increased from
2.7 Mg ha1, in 1980, to 4.6 Mg ha1, in 2001, under
irrigation conditions (CEC, 1999); whereas the national
average in the United States increased from 1.3 Mg ha1,
in 1930, to 8.7 Mg ha1, in 1994 (Troyer, 1999). The
selection and hybridization of maize lines has made it
possible to raise the productive potential and quality of
the materials (IBPGR, 1991), but cultivation practices
have allowed a production record of over 25 Mg ha1
(Dobermann et al., 2003).
Reducing row spacing or increasing plant density
makes it possible to increase the yield of green forage or
maize grain (Barbieri et al., 2000; Cox and Cherney,
2001; Pederson and Lauer, 2002). However, yield does
not increase with these strategies (Cox and Cherney, 2002;
Pederson and Lauer, 2003). In part, this is because the
early maturing hybrids yield less than late maturing
hybrids when row spacing is reduced (Farnham, 2001;
Widdicombe and Thelen, 2002). Grain yield is also
increased by widening the border effect, thus reducing
the competition for light (Lesoing and Francis, 1999; Reta
et al., 2003).
Technologies such as pressurization and sprinkling
increase efficiency in irrigation. The technology of drip
irrigation has been investigated and improved, and is of
great importance in the semi-arid zones, because it
reduces the evaporation of the bare soil, surface runoff
and deep percolation (Mahbub et al., 2002). In particular,
subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) has been shown to be an
adequate technology for maize production in semi-arid
zones (Lamm et al., 1995). The adequate operation of
the SDI systems reduces water loss by 25%, compared to
traditional irrigation, while it maintains yields of 14 Mg
ha1 (Lamm and Trooien, 2003). Although the efficiency
of irrigation and water consumption of the crops is
important, it is insignificant unless it is accompanied by
high yield (Sinclair and Muchow, 2001).
It is difficult to evaluate the effect of row spacing on
crop yield in an SDI system, given that, ordinarily, the
irrigation lines are established in an equidistant form
among the rows. Furthermore, the rentability of the SDI
is susceptible to the useful life of the installation (Lamm
and Trooien, 2003). One option is to sow perpendicular
to the SDI lines. To this respect, no effect has been
observed of the orientation of the irrigation system on
the yield of maize sown at 0.76 m and with the irrigation
lines spaced at 1.5, 2.0 or 3.0 m (Lamm et al., 1997).
Due to the fact that crop density also influences the
relationships of competition, the objective of the present
study was to evaluate the effect of plant density on the
ALTA DENSIDAD DE SIEMBRA EN LA PRODUCCIN DE MAZ CON IRRIGACIN POR GOTEO SUBSUPERFICIAL
MATERIALES Y MTODOS
100 m1 a 56 kg cm2 (Figura 1).
siembra (dds).

de crecimiento se registraron 478 mm de precipitacin;

1992). The measurements were taken from the center of the space
between crop rows, at 10 cm height, on the same level, at dawn and in
the opposite direction of the sun (Li-Cor, 1992). For T3, the LAI
measurement was between the rows spaced 0.4 and also between those
of 1.1 m. On each occasion, the measurements were taken randomly
within the plots.
The destructive sampling was carried out 122 das in four of the
repetitions of each treatment, in a useful plot measuring 5 m in length
and with two crop rows. The plant was dissected into stem, leaves and
ear; the leaves were separated into dry and green leaves. All of the
fractions were weighed, and a sample was obtained by quartering. The
samples were dried at 60 C, until constant weight was obtained to
determine the dry matter (DM). The sampling of grain yield in a useful
plot measuring 5 m in length with a width of two rows, in the eight
repetitions of each treatment, was carried out at 163 das. The number of
plants and the number of ears were recorded. The DM of the grain was
determined by drying at 60 C, until a constant weight was reached.
The grain yield was adjusted to 86% of DM. The grain weight per ear
was determined by dividing the grain weight in the sample by the
corresponding number of ears. From each sample, an aliquot was taken
by quartering for the weight of 1000 grains and to determine the grain
density (weight of 1 L of maize grain multiplied by 1000).
To establish the difference among the treatments, a variance
analysis and the Tukey test (p0.05) were used through the GLM
procedure (SAS Institute, 1997).

Telen, 2002). Cox y Cherney (2001) reportan mayor rendimiento a 0.38 m (22 Mg ha1) que a 0.76 m con densidades de 80 000 a 116 000 plantas ha1 y fertilizacin de
200 a 250 kg N ha1.

a 0.35 m, 76 000 plantas ha1 y 120 kg N ha1, mientras

CONCLUSIONS
T1, with row spacing of 0.75 m and a plant density of
90 000 seeds ha1, is adequate for the production of
forage or maize grain with subsurface drip irrigation and
minimum tillage under the conditions examined. There
is no benefit in increasing the crop density to 133 000
seeds ha1. Neither is the effect of high crop density
reduced if the crop rows are alternated to 0.4 and 1.1 m.
