Z drugiej strony, gdybymy akcentowali element funkcjonalny,
miejscami majcymi zachowywa niekomunikowalne dowiadczenie,
swych potomkw.
Wreszcie gdybymy powicili najwicej uwagi elementowi
symbolicznemu, wwczas moglibymy na przykad przeciwstawi
sobie dominujce i zdominowane lieux de mmoire. Pierwsze z nich,
spektakularne i triumfalne, narzucajce si i zazwyczaj narzucone
zawsze odgrnie cechuj si chodem i powag charakterystyczn
dla ocjalnych ceremonii. Raczej si je podziwia ni odwiedza.
Drugim typem s miejsca schronienia, sanktuaria spontanicznej
pobonoci i milczcego pielgrzymowania, gdzie odnajdujemy bijce
serce pamici. Z jednej strony Sacre-Coeur albo narodowy pogrzeb
Paula Valry, z drugiej za popularne pielgrzymki do Lourdes albo
pogrzeb Sartrea; tutaj pochwek de Gaullea, tam za cmentarz w
Colombey.
Te klasykacje mona by precyzowa w nieskoczono. Mona
by przeciwstawi sobie publiczne i prywatne miejsca pamici; miejsca
czyste, wyczerpujce si w swej funkcji upamitniajcej jak mowa
pogrzebowa, pole bitwy w Douamont albo ciana komunardw
oraz miejsca zoone, w ktrych element upamitniajcy stanowi
jedno z wielu symbolicznych znacze, jak w przypadku agi
narodowej, program uroczystoci, pielgrzymki itd. Wartoci
Ju
sama moliwo historii lieux de mmoire dowodzi bowiem istnienia
niewidzialnej nici czcej pozornie odlege od siebie przedmioty.
Sugeruje, e porwnanie cmentarza Pre-Lachaise i generalnej
parasolki z maszyn do szycia. Istnieje zrnicowana sie, obejmujca
wszystkie te odrbne byty, niewiadome uporzdkowanie zbiorowej
pamici, ktrej uwiadomienie jest nasz powinnoci. Narodowa
wszystkich rodzajw historii, do ktrych si przyzwyczailimy,
zarwno staroytnych, jak i nowoytnych. Wszystkie poprzednie
historyczne i naukowe metody badania pamici, zarwno narodowej,
jak i spoecznej, zajmoway si realiami, rzeczami samymi w sobie
i ich bezporedni rzeczywistoci. Jednak w przeciwiestwie do
przedmiotw historycznych, lieux de mmoire nie maj odniesienia
w rzeczywistoci; raczej same s swoim odniesieniem: s znakami
czystymi, odnoszcymi si wycznie do samych siebie.
podwjny status: s miejscem nadmiaru, zamknitym w sobie

Tender Museum
marysia lewandowska: e origin of Muzeum Sztuki is directly related to the idea of
the gift. e Muzeum has a strong history of receiving gifts, dating from the beginning
of the twentieth century with donations from a Cracow-based family of collectors
whose gift formed the basis of the City Museum of History and Art. is was followed
by what is commonly known as the gift of the a.r. group put together through
donations from artists and friends with a commitment to establishing an international
collection. is gift became the impetus for the further growth of the museum, and
encouraged artists who exhibited there under the directorship of Ryszard Stanisawski
to oer their works to the collection. Later on there were donations such as Joseph
Beuys Polentransport or artistic exchanges of works with MOCA LA, when it was led
by Pontus Hulten.
michael newman: I am aware of the role the gift has
played in other projects you have done. Doesnt the
gift have a double-edged nature? It is both a pure gift
with the expectation of nothing in return, and a power
relation. ere is also the question of the economy of
the gift. We might think, as Jacques Derrida does, in
terms of a distinction between giving without reserve
and an economising of the gift, where it becomes a
matter of exchange. Of course, these two are never
entirely separable. Could we say that an outside
economy has been introduced into the museum?
m.l .: I just wonder if there is such a thing as an uneconomic relation. It seems to me that nothing escapes
the economy but there are of course dierent kinds of
economies. Whilst a transaction that reveals generosity
as a powerful tool is perhaps more important, we tend
to realise that there is always the dimension of a power
relation although we dont want to acknowledge this
as part of the exchange. How else if not simply by
oering an art work to the museum collection can an
artist now negotiate the giving? Perhaps by insisting
on procedures that support wider access to cultural
products and values, by making something available
rather than restricting it, but also bound by a sharing
of public responsibility. is discussion has acquired a
dierent dimension since the political changes in
and with it the move from state to private ownership.
As a part of the project I eventually want to release
a DVD based on the recordings found in the public
archives under the Creative Commons licence. Such a
proposal forces the issue of property, copyright and the
public domain questions of ownership always present
a serious challenge when it comes to the access and
use of archival materials. In this instance the public
does not fully benet from the archives as most of the
materials are restricted by copyright rules. As an artist I
take liberties to extend the use of the materials I nd,
beyond my initial engagement with them. I want to
encourage several archives in d to donate materials
related to the history of the Muzeum Sztuki which are
currently held under strict commercial terms and release
them to be used freely by the Muzeum.

will disturb the current order and bring our project into
crisis. e missing link is capable of proposing what we
most dread as knowledge. ere is a sort of uncertainty
about what might be found and the eect it will have.
e seduction of the archive is its ultimate potential, it
provides what we are not prepared for, the unaccounted,
the hostile, something that is beyond the original reason
for entering its domain.
m.n.: So the question you are grappling with is that of
the relation of the archive to the present. How does the
present moment relate to the time when the material
was deposited? Is your idea that you can use the archive
to create some sort of ssure that may transform our
relation to the present?
m.l.: e archive itself is of no particular interest to me.
I think that intervention is the key. One is intervening
into the present moment by using archival sources
capable of articulating or politicising ones relationship
to it through research. e past has to serve my needs,
perhaps to ctionalise my own practice. When I began
working with fragements of a recorded radio interview
with Urszula Czartoryska, I felt an anity with the
uncompromising nature of her position as a critic. Also,
a few other recordings I found made me more sensitive
to the role she might have played in shaping the
Muzeum both as part of a curatorial team but perhaps
more signicantly as the wife of the director Ryszard
Stanisawski. I was impressed as well as troubled by
her awarness vis a vis the creative economy and the
demands of the commercialisation of culture. at was
in and I wonder what the legacy of such a critical
voice might be. How does my own practice engage with
similar questions now. I take up this chance encounter
with her, with the recording in the archive, as the
premise for a ctional dialogue across generations, and

. I am aware that I cannot speak about the role of
an artist or critic in the contemporary world without
attempting to briey describe that world. It is
a place of excess and surfeit, a world of material and
technological fascinations, but also of deep divisions,
conicts and most recently, economic instability.
Financial crisis forces us to conduct reevaluations in
the professional sphere, as well as revisions of our
individual habits concerning the range of our inuence
and possibilities. Many years ago, a renowned
art critic was invited to participate in a museum
symposium and spoke of the possible consequences
of using genetic engineering on humans. He informed
and warned the audience against genetic engineering.
At the time, his words must have sounded extremely
bold, regardless of whether they were formulated
from a solely theoretical perspective, or their author
was driven by a genuine existential fear.

Poczwszy od r. polski konstruktywizm pojawia
si na arenie wiatowej w rozmaitych kontekstach
i konguracjach najczciej autonomicznie, jako
znaczce zjawisko indywidualne; sporadycznie
w kombinacjach. Na wystawie w Kulturhuset
w Sztokholmie () zaprezentowany zosta razem
z ambalaami Tadeusza Kantora i ptnami Jerzego
Krawczyka. Z kolei na wystawach w Rzymie,
Genui oraz Wenecji () ssiadowa z Witkacym

ideologiczna i retoryczna rama pokazw.

e exhibition of work by young Russian Constructivists held in the Moscow premises of the
OBMOKh (Young Artists Society), formerly home to the prestigious gallery of Klaudia Mikhailova
at 11 Bolshaia Dmitrovka, was documented using a photographic camera. e photographs were
taken from the opposite ends of the exhibition hall. e two best known images, and in fact the only
ones that still exist, mostly depict sculptures. Canvases did not attract as much attention from the
viewers as the centrally arranged sculptures. We looked not only at the works of art hanging on the
walls, but particularly at those that lled the space of the hall said El Lissitzky. e constructions,
made from wooden bars, wire, glass and metal elements, turned out to be the main highlight of
the exhibition. One can divide them into two groups: those placed on specially designed stands,
resembling slender columns or crane jibs, and those hung from the ceiling. e former, along with
their supports, formed a uniform model similar to a miniature construction crane and its hoists. e
latter in most cases Rodchenkos Spatial Compositions
imbued the space with an unusual sense of lightness.
e Constructivists artistic rule book was based on
the idea of methodical work as a substitution for talent,
inspiration and artistic genius. e work of art was the
result of laboratory research conducted by artists in
institutions that were specially created for that purpose.
e research within the art eld, as well as the physical
matter of an artwork itself, was aimed at its maximum
autonomy and the severing of its mimetic relation to the
surrounding world. ese experiences were to shape the
post-revolutionary context in a way that was similar to
the projects of architects and builders. In the following
year, constructivism emigrated across the western border.
