Changeistough.Noteveryoneisgoingtobeonboardwiththechangesyou
arecreatingintheorganization.So,whatdoyoudo?

First,youstartwithchangeagents.

Theyarethechampionsforchangeandtheonesdrivingthechangeswithin
theorganization.Theyarethestakeholdersontheprojectthatareeagerto
rolluptheirsleevesandhelp.Theyareactivistsforthechangeandtheyare
vocalaboutwantingtoseeprogress.LEVERAGETHEM.

Thisgroupofchangeagentsonyourteamandacrosstheorganizationcanbe
organizedandleveragedinawaythatletsthemprovidealeadershipfromthe
bottomupapproach.Workwiththeirpassionandgivethemtheinformation
theyneedtoactasvocalsupportersofthechangesyouarecreatingwithin
yourorganization.Youshouldalsoempowerthemtoholdothersinyour
organizationaccountableforthechangetheyneedtoparticipatein.Leading
byexampleandaskingtherightquestionsisaquickwaytogetthepositive
reinforcementyourchangeinitiativewillneed.

Secondly,youmustengageyoursponsors.

Thisisabigone.Irememberbeingrelativelynewtoanorganizationand
watchingwhathappenswhensponsorsdon'tknowhowtoengage.Iwas
hiredtobuildaPMO,butbeforeIwasthere,theyhadpulledtogetherseveral
projectmanagersandsaid,"OK,nowyouareaPMO".Theybroughtmeinto
helpteachtheseprojectmanagershowto"beprogrammangers"andtobuild
aPMOtomanagesometransformationalchangethecompanywasaboutto
undertake.Iquicklyobservedthat,yes,thePMsdidneedsomeeducation,
butyouknowwhowasreallyinneedofsometraining?Thesponsors.

Noonehadtakenthetimetoexplaintothemtheirroleinthechangesthey
wereresponsibleforimplementing.So,oneofmyfirstandmostimportant

InthewakeofHouston'srecentflooding,countlessbusinessesclosedtheir
doors,andmanyindividualsarecopingwithhomesindisrepair.Thisishardly
thefirsttimemothernaturehasaffectedbusiness.Snow,hurricanesand
floodshappenalltoooften,andbusinesscannotopen,ortheemployees
cannotgettowork.SowhatdoestheFairLaborStandardsActrequireasfar
aspayingworkers?

RulesforExemptEmployees

ClosedForBusiness.Anofficeclosuremaynotaffectthesalaryofanexempt
employee.Iftheofficeisclosed,employersmaynotmakedeductionsfroman
exemptemployee'ssalary.However,employersmayrequirethatexempt
employeestakevacationorpaidtimeoff("PTO")tomakeupthattime.Ifan
employeedoesnothavevacationorPTOdaysavailable,theemployercan
allowhertotakethePTOorvacationdayanywayandmakeitupatalater
time.

OpenForBusiness.Iftheofficeisopen,andtheexemptemployeedecidesto
stayhome,employersmaydeductthatday'swagesfromhispaywithout
violatingthesalarybasis.Fulldayabsencedeductionsareallowed,butpartial
dayabsencesanddeductionsareNOTallowed.Iftheemployeeworksany

beignoredandaclassorcollectiveactionbecertifiedwhereliabilityand
damageswillbedeterminedwithstatisticaltechniquesthatpresumeallclass
membersareidenticaltotheaverageobservedinasample.Theendresultof
thisapproachinthecasethatwillgobeforethecourtis,accordingto
defendantTysonFoods,aclasswideverdictfromwhicheachclassmember,
