Flexical: The New Seal

Compression Unit

lexical is a new type of mechanical

seal compression unit developed
with a combination of mechanical
technology and advanced machined
spring. This product from ProEight Offshore
Engineering Sdn Bhd comes with a
reduction in the number of parts. Radial
flexibility allows Flexical to bend laterally,
thus preventing face opening during shaft
deflection.
Multiple helix start give pure force
reaction, unifying lateral bending and
movement to prevent buckling effect which
further gives stability for the compression
unit. Multiple helixes introduce a uniform
distributed spring load.
Machined helical flexures from a single
solid body eliminate residual stresses. The
shrink-fit face design acts as a primary

sealing element for this unit. It provides a

metal encasement to reinforce a brittle seal
face, thus increasing seal face strength and
impacts resistance.
This is followed by the O-ring which acts
as a secondary sealing element. Flexicals
robust design comes with interchangeable
parts for pumping device attachment.

Hypoband: The Lifesaver

he Hypoband is a new electronic

wearable device for diabetic
patients. It is actually a smart
wireless healthcare device that
works together with an app that runs on
Android smartphones. It makes auto calls
and sends out pre written text messages
(SMS) to caregivers, doctors or hospitals
during an emergency hypoglycemic (low
sugar level) attack.
The Hypoband has a local alarm mode that
allows caregivers sleeping near the patient to
be woken up to assist the patient. A built-in
high tech sensor accurately detects cold sweat
by monitoring the patients temperature and
sweat levels. It comes with a panic button that
can be triggered in an emergency or a fall.
According to the World Health
Organisation, every 10 seconds, one death

is linked to diabetes with hypoglycemia

being the main cause. In Malaysia, 1 out of
8 adults has diabetes and 50% of them are
unaware it. Most attacks take place at night
