Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community

June / July 2015 Issue 55
Tena Koutou,
This month we welcome Erin Holwill to our office. Erin comes in on Wednesday mornings to help out with administration. We are blessed with the volunteers who help us in the office, on our board and at events we participate
in during the year. We value and appreciate their contribution. On the down side, after eight years with the Volunteer Centre, we say goodbye to Jane, who has decided to move on after successfully applying for a volunteer
coordinators job with Hopsice. Whilst the farewell will be sad and we will miss Jane, it is also a new opportunity for
both Jane and the Volunteer Centre. We wish Jane all the best in her new job and thank her for the time she has
spent with us and the skills she had shared.
May and June are busy months for us, as we celebrated the Youth Awards for Volunteering in May and this month,
National Volunteer Week. The Youth Awards for Volunteering were held on the 23rd May at the Hub, EIT. Fifteen
individual young people and one group were recognised for the volunteering they do in their own community as
well as the wider community. Each year, we are humbled by the contributions of our youth, and the range of jobs
that they do, from caring for our environment to mentoring other youth. Voluntary contribution is valuable and
the effort of all is important, therefore we do not judge the people who are nominated, we prefer to acknowledge
everyones effort equally. We would like to thank those nominated for their volunteering contribution, their
efforts are having a positive impact on our community. The theme for Youth Week was We are the future and by
their actions these young people are demonstrating their commitment for building a better future.
We would also like to thank our two awesome young speakers, Leah Wilkie and Andrew Shelton, who inspired and
challenged guests by sharing their volunteering experiences. Thank you also to our great MC, Te Wai Coulston,
who did a fantastic job, no one would have believed it was his first MC job! Thanks also to the others who helped
out and helped celebrate of our youth.
The theme for this years National Volunteer Week is There is a Place to Volunteer and as I mentioned above all
voluntary contributions are valuable, it doesnt matter how big or small the contribution is. Ten minutes spent
talking to a lonely, sick or elderly person on the phone every couple of days, makes a huge difference in the life of
that person, and is just as important as helping in a charity shop or caring for the environment. There are many
ways in which people can volunteer, be it contributing skills, time, manpower or donating money and we at the
Volunteer Centre can help people interested in volunteering find a place.
For those who have found their place to volunteer, thank you for your kindness and generosity, we appreciate you
strengthening our community through your voluntary effort.
Nku i roto i ng mihi, n

Jane says.It is time for me to say Goodbye. I shall be

finishing at the Gisborne volunteer centre after 8 fun filled years to join
the Hospice Tairawhiti team as their new Volunteer Coordinator.

I have had a wonderful time here at

the centre. I have met and worked
alongside so many marvellous people. It has been both my pleasure
and a humbling experience to meet
and acknowledge so many volunteers and volunteer leaders in our
community.

I Wish you all the very best for your future and for many of you I shall continue
to connect up with in my new role at Hospice Tairawhiti.

Presents the following half-day workshop 19th October 2015

Understanding and Engaging 21st Century

Volunteers
and

the Philosophy of Volunteering

Presented by Rob Jackson, a leader in the UK volunteer management field
WORKSHOP: The workshop will look at some of the key ways in which society is changing and how these
changes affect volunteering. We will discuss what leaders of volunteers can do to update their practices
to accommodate these changes, further enhancing their engagement and retention of 21st century volunteers.
Youll have the chance to explore what you believe about volunteering what it is, what it isnt, why you
think that and consider what this might mean for your work as a volunteer leader. The workshop will be
highly interactive, a bit provocative, and a lot of fun.

FACILITATOR: Rob Jackson is a leader in the UK volunteer management field, and has been involved in volunteer management for
the past 20 years, including roles with the University of Surrey, Barnardos, Royal National Institute of the Blind and Volunteering England. He is a highly regarded trainer, facilitator, consultant and is a
