A electric circuit has 15 joints. Each of them is likely to be defective of. In how many
different ways may the circuit have just five defectives if each joint defect probability of
failure is 0.1?
Derive the expression for standard deviation of binomial distribution.
A point A and B are connected through a relay network as shown below. The probability of
each relay functioning properly is 0.8. What is the probability that a signal can pass
successfully from A to B.
A

A control system consists of three separate, identical and statistically independent

channels, at least two of which must operate for system success. Each channel consists of
two identical sensors and one actuator. At least one of the sensors and the actuator must
operate for success of a channel. All components operate in their useful life period, the
MTTF of each sensor is 5000 hr and the MTTF of each actuator is 6000 hr. Evaluate:
(a) The MTTF of each channel.
(b) The probability of the system surviving the first 500 hr without failure.

Write a short note on STPM.

Derive the necessary expressions for limiting state probabilities using STPM for the two
component repairable model.
A repairable system contains three different units, and all must operate for system
success. If one unit fails. No further failures can occur until the failed unit is repaired and
the system placed back into service. Develop an expression for the probability of the
system being in the operable state and calculate the frequency of encountering the failed
state. What is the average duration of a failed state? Use the expression to calculate the
probability, frequency and duration of failure if all units are identical and have a failure rate
of 1 f/yr and a repair rate of 100 repairs/yr.

Consider that there are three generating units of capacities 25 MW, 25 MW & 50 MW
respectively. Each unit has a failure rate of 0.01 f/day and a repair rate of 0.49 r/day.
(a) Using sequential addition method, determine a capacity outage cumulative probability
table.
(b) Compare the above with the Bernoullis principle.
(c) Compute COPT, if the 50 MW unit is to be removed.

Explain the different models for weather effects on transmission lines.

Evaluate the failure rate, average outage time and annual outage time of the load point L in
figure below. If each busbar is 100% reliable and each line has a permanent failure rate of
0.5 f/yr, a temporary failure rate of 2 f/yr, a repair time of 8 hours and a reclosure time of 10
minutes.
