1.1.

Introduction

1.1.1

Human Resource Management

Human resources are critical, if not handle with care, mass destructions may crop up. Hence every
businessman must have to be careful when managing, organizing, directing a work force. The human
resources of an organization consist of all people who perform its activities.
Human resource management (HRM) is concerned with the personnel policies and managerial practices
and systems that influence the workforce. In broader terms, all decisions that affect the workforce of the
organization concern the HRM function.
The activities involved in HRM function are pervasive throughout the organization. Line managers,
typically spend more than 50 percent of their time for human resource activities such hiring, evaluating,
disciplining, and scheduling employees. Human resource management specialists in the HRM
department help organizations with all activities related to staffing and maintaining an effective
workforce. Major HRM responsibilities include work design and job analysis, training and development,
recruiting, compensation, team-building, performance management and appraisal, worker health and
safety issues, as well as identifying or developing valid methods for selecting staff. HRM department
provides the tools, data and processes that are used by line managers in their human resource
management component of their job.
What makes Human Resource Management different?
What makes it different from other streams of management is the fact that Human resources
management or HRM cannot be defined by simple thumb rules, nor can it be taught or explained by
simple theories, without a grave risk of oversimplification. It requires keen observation of human traits,
sensitivity arising from emotional intelligence, and understanding of human nature like a psychologist.
The main functions of Human resource Management are;

Job Design (JD)

Job Analysis

Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &

administration

11

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

Human Resource Planning (HRP)

Recruitment

Selection

Hiring

Induction

Performance Evaluation

Compensation Management

Training and Development

Employee Movements

Welfare Administration

Health and safety Administration

Discipline Administration

Grievance Handling

Labor Relations

Each of these sub-streams is a more or less specialized function, yet one can say that HRM itself is more
than these entire put together.
Ideally, a Human Resource Management Department is responsible for an interdisciplinary examination
of all staff members in the workplace. This strategy calls for applications from diverse fields such as
psychology, paralegal studies, industrial engineering, sociology, and a critical understanding of theories
pertaining to post-modernism and industrial structuralism. The department bears the onus of converting
the available task-force or hired individuals into strategic business partners. This is achieved via
dedicated Change Management and focused Employee Administration. The HR functions with the sole
Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &
administration

12

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

goal of motivating and encouraging the employees to prove their mettle and add value to the company.
This is achieved via various management processes like workforce planning and recruitment, induction
and orientation of hired task-force and employee training, administration and appraisals
The greatest challenge of Human Resource Management
Unlike managing other resources like machines, real estate and finance, managing human beings is a
totally different ball game, simply because unlike other assets, each employee has his own goal and will
work first to attain that goal, even if it is at the cost of the goals of the organization. Thus, no employee
can ever be made to provide his optimum output for the organization unless the goals of the organization
are closely aligned with his own goals. This, in short, is the greatest challenge for all HRM experts, and
in every organization, the need is to go about it in a way which is unique and specific for that
organization.
The Changing Human Resources Role
The role of the HR professional is changing. In the past, HR managers were often viewed as the
systematizing, policing arm of executive management. Their role was more closely aligned with
personnel and administration functions that were viewed by the organization as paperwork.
When you consider that the initial HR function, in many companies, comes out of the administration or
finance department because hiring employees, paying employees, and dealing with benefits were the
organization's first HR needs, this is not surprising.
In this role, the HR professional served executive agendas well, but was frequently viewed as a road
block by much of the rest of the organization. While some need for this role occasionally remains you
wouldnt want every manager putting his own spin on a sexual harassment policy, as an example
much of the HR role is transforming itself.
HR Role: Business and Strategic Partner
In todays organizations, to guarantee their viability and ability to contribute, HR managers need to think
of themselves as strategic partners. In this role, the HR person contributes to the development of and the
accomplishment of the organization-wide business plan and objectives.
The HR business objectives are established to support the attainment of the overall strategic business
plan and objectives. The tactical HR representative is deeply knowledgeable about the design of work
Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &
administration

13

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

systems in which people succeed and contribute. This strategic partnership impacts HR services such as
the design of work positions; hiring; reward, recognition and strategic pay; performance development
and appraisal systems; career and succession planning; and employee development.
To be successful business partners, the HR staff members have to think like business people, know
finance and accounting, and be accountable and responsible for cost reductions and the measurement of
all HR programs and processes. It's not enough to ask for a seat at the executive table; HR people will
have to prove they have the business savvy necessary to sit there.
New HR Role
The role of the HR manager must parallel the needs of his or her changing organization. Successful
organizations are becoming more adaptable, resilient, quick to change direction, and customer-centered.
Within this environment, the HR professional, who is considered necessary by line managers, is a
strategic partner, an employee sponsor or advocate and a change mentor. At the same time, especially the
HR Generalist, still has responsibility for employee benefits administration, often payroll, and employee
paperwork, especially in the absence of an HR Assistant.

1.1.2

Employee Satisfaction

Employees are the blood line or back born of any organization. Like human needs water and a generator
needs fuel, every organization need man power. Sometimes people around us have a certainty that in this
technical world of change, man power is less functional than Machineries. Well! I want convince all
those people who has such thinking that man power or human recourses are the most fundamental
element of any organization.
Job satisfaction, the foremost part of human resource management. It is said as the favorableness or unfavorableness with which the employee views his work. It expresses the amount of agreement between
ones expectation of the job and the rewards that the job provides. Job Satisfaction is a part of life
satisfaction. The nature of ones environment of job is an important part of life as Job Satisfaction
influences ones general life satisfaction.
Job Satisfaction, thus, is the result of various attitudes possessed by an employee. In a narrow sense,
these attitudes are related to the job under condition with such specific factors such as wages.
Supervisors of employment, conditions of work, social relation on the job, prompt settlement of
grievances and fair treatment by employer.
However, more comprehensive approach requires that many factors are to be included before a complete
understanding of job satisfaction can be obtained. Such factors as employees age, health temperature,

Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &

administration

15

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

desire and level of aspiration should be considered. Further his family relationship, Social status,
recreational outlets, activity in the organizations etc. Contribute ultimately to job satisfaction.

Factors influencing job satisfaction

The major factors influencing job satisfaction are presented below:
Supervision
To a worker, Supervision is equally a strong contributor to the job satisfactions well as to the job
dissatisfaction. The feelings of workers towards his supervisors are usually similar to his feeling towards
the company. The role of supervisor is a focal point for attitude formation. Bad supervision results in
absenteeism and labor turnover. Good supervision results in higher production and good industrial
relations.
Co-workers
Various studies had traced this factor as a factor of intermediate importance. Ones associates with others
had frequently been motivated as a factor in job satisfaction. Certainly, this seems reasonable because
people like to be near their friends. The workers derive satisfaction when the co-workers are helpful,
friendly and co-operative.
Pay
Studies also show that most of the workers felt satisfied when they are paid more adequately to the work
performed by them. The relative important of pay would probably changing factor in job satisfaction or
dissatisfaction.
Age
Age has also been found to have a direct relationship to level job of satisfaction of employees. In some
groups job satisfaction is higher with increasing age, in other groups job satisfaction is lower and in
other there is no difference at all.

Marital status
Marital status has an important role in deciding the job satisfaction. Most of the studies have revealed
that the married person finds dissatisfaction in his job than his unmarried counterpart. The reasons stated
to be are that wages were insufficient due to increased cost of living, educations to children etc.
Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &
administration

16

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

Education
Studies conducted among various workers revealed that most of workers who had not completed their
school education showed higher satisfaction level. However, educated workers felt less satisfied in their
job.
Working condition
The result of various studies shows that working condition is an important factor. Good working
atmosphere and pleasant surroundings help increasing the production of industry. Working conditions
are more important to women workers than men workers.
The state of the employee satisfaction
Although committed and loyal employees are the most influential factor to becoming an employer of
choice, it's no surprise that companies and organizations face significant challenges in developing
energized and engaged workforces.
However, there is plenty of research to show that increased employee commitment and trust in
leadership can positively impact the company's bottom line. In fact, the true potential of an organization
can only be realized when the productivity level of all individuals and teams are fully aligned,
committed and energized to successfully accomplish the goals of the organization. As a result, the goal
of every company should be to improve the desire of employees to stay in the relationship they have
with the company.
When companies understand and manage employee loyalty - rather than retention specifically - they can
reap benefits on both sides of the balance sheet i.e., revenues and costs. On the revenue side of the
balance sheet, loyal and committed employees are more likely to go "above and beyond" to meet
customer needs and are highly motivated to work to the best of their ability. Both of these traits are
crucial for continued customer commitment and ongoing revenue and growth for the company.
On the cost side, loyal employees stay longer, resist competitive job offers, do not actively look for
other employment and recommend the company to others as a good place to work. These four behaviors
positively influence the cost side of the balance sheet because they are leading indicators of employee
retention.
The longer companies keep their employees, the longer they can avoid having to pay to replace them. In
other words, rather than focusing only on retention (that is, trying to retain employees who have already
decided to leave), organizations should proactively recognize the benefits of understanding, managing
and improving employee loyalty.

What Employers Can Do About Employee Satisfaction

In this environment for employee satisfaction, it is vitally important to know which factors most affect
employee satisfaction. You want to spend your time, money, and energy on programs, processes, and
factors that will have a positive impact on employee satisfaction. The study found that employees
identified these five factors as most important:

job security,

benefits (especially health care) with the importance of retirement benefits rising with the age of
the employee,

compensation/pay,

opportunities to use skills and abilities, and

Feeling safe in the work environment.

The next five most important factors affecting employee satisfaction were:

the employee's relationship with his or her immediate supervisor,

management recognition of employee job performance,

communication between employees and senior management,

the work itself, and

Autonomy and independence in their job.

Factors that were not strongly connected to employee satisfaction included:

the organizations commitment to a green workplace,

networking opportunities,

career development opportunities,

Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &

administration

18

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

paid training and tuition reimbursement programs, and

The organizations commitment to professional development.

In contrast, I ranked these ten factors as most important in employee satisfaction:

job security,

relationship with immediate supervisor,

benefits,

communication between employees and senior management,

opportunities to use skills and abilities,

management recognition of employee job performance,

job-specific training,

feeling safe in the work environment,

compensation/pay, and

Overall corporate culture.

Ive consolidated for you the results of employee satisfaction surveys and their implications for the
workplace. Most importantly, I have provided research data that defines the factors most important to
employees as you continue to seek to provide a workplace that emphasizes employee satisfaction as a
recruiting and retention tool. Use the data to your best advantage.

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

Company Overview
There was a time when the tiny island nation of Maldives was
unknown to most parts of the world. Education was very limited,
infrastructure almost did not exist and the people didnt care much
for more. Modern lifestyle blooming across the south Asian region
did not have immediate influence on Maldives but it faded slowly
which resulted to a shift towards the modern era. Businesses in
Mal boomed and expanded to overseas which furnished the arrival
of foreign culture. Educational opportunities, basic infrastructure
and new medical facilities were made available, attracting more and
more people from the islands to settle down in Mal. This was the
initial stage of a rapid population growth in the capital city.
From the early 1980s, the increasing population of Mal relied on the islands freshwater aquifer for its
daily consumption needs. However, due to over consumption, the freshwater layer eventually depleted
leaving behind brackish and foul water that was inapt for consumption. The problem further worsened
due to the plague that spread in a fast pace due to the absence
of proper sewer system. This was during the nineties, a time
when fresh water needs of Mal elevated to a desperate level.
The remaining ground water wells were completely defiled,
making it unsafe for human use. The rainwater storage tanks
were not sufficient enough for the multiplying population.
The Maldivian government, after having a thorough study of
the situation and reviewing the applicable solutions, agreed
that the most suitable choice left was to desalinate sea water.

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

Mal Water and Sewerage Company Pvt Ltd (MWSC) were

established on 1st April 1995 to carry out this task. The
principle objective of the Company has been to design, develop,
operate, manage and maintain the public water and wastewater
disposal supply systems. The very first sewer pipe laid down in
Mal stretched from the present Police Head Quarters up to
State Bank of India in Boduthakurufaanu Magu. The aim was to
provide a reliable sewer system to the whole of Mal unlike
previous attempts carried out by some private parties which had
a regular leakage problem that flooded the roads.
Employing a model that was not practiced by the SAARC region at that time, the Company took over
the responsibility of providing safe drinking water and maintaining the sewer network of Mal. With
good management and innovative use of the technology, the company is now able to pipe out
wastewater from every household in Mal. Safe drinking water is provided on a 24/7 basis, maintaining
a reasonable price which is the main source of income for the Company. Today, MWSC is a multidisciplinary Engineering Organization, dealing contracts involved in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical
Engineering. MWSC has provided on its own (own project) water supply and wastewater collection &
disposal system including laying of water pipe lines, construction of storage water tanks, pump house,
pumping system, Laying of sewer lines, construction of Catch pits, Manholes, Sewer pump stations in
Mal, Hulhumal & Villingili and other islands of the Maldives.

RO Membranes, HOH Water Technology A/S
For more than 20 years, HOH Water Technology A/S of Denmark has produced and supplied desalinated
plants for industries and public water supplies. In fact, HOH was the first company to introduce a
reverse osmosis plant with built-in energy recovery with efficiency larger than 95%. When using
traditional energy recovery systems, the energy consumption by desalination of seawater (35,000ppm) is
6 to 7kWh/m3, whereas HOH is able to guarantee an energy consumption of 3 to 4 kWh/m3. In order to
facilitate installation, many of the water treatment systems are delivered in a container, fully assembled
and thoroughly tested. This means that the cost of erecting a separate building for the system is saved
and on site costs kept at a minimum.
HOH Water Technology A/S of Denmark possesses years of experience in developing solutions that
provide private consumers, the public sector and industry with optimum water quality for various
purposes. This is the reason why their areas of activity range from the most basic technology to the

3.1 Importance of the study

Employee satisfaction is the most fundamental element of any organization. With the help of this

report you can pin point all the needs and wants of employees.
If employees are not treated fairly and equally the whole scenario will look ugly. This research

will help to take necessary action towards the employees.

With the help of this report organization can develop and increase the efficiency of the

employees. It will lead better productivity in the organization.

This research identified the current situation of the employees. And I can give you better

suggestion at your benefit as well the employees.

This research granted me so much extra knowledge and ideas on the field.

3.2 Objective Of the study

The following are the objectives of the present study.

To determine the level of satisfaction of the respondents regarding their job.

To study and understand the job satisfaction among the employees of The Professional

Couriers.
To study the various factors which influencing job satisfaction.
To study the relationship between the personal factors of the employee (Income,

Designation, Educational qualification, Gender, etc.,

To offer suggestions to the courier to improve their employees satisfactory level.

CHAPTER 4
Research Methodology

Introduction to Research
Research in common parlance refers to a search for knowledge. Once can also define research as a
scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic. In fact, research is an art of
scientific investigation.
Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &
administration

42

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

Research is an academic activity and as such the term should be used in a technical sense. It is defining
and redefining problems, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions; collecting, organizing and
evaluating data; making deductions and reaching conclusions; and at last carefully testing the
conclusions to determine whether they fit the formulating hypothesis.
Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. It may be understood as a
science of studying how research is done scientifically. In it we study the various steps that are generally
adopted by a researcher in studying his research problem along with the logic behind them. It is
necessary for the researcher to know not only the research methods/techniques but also the
methodology.
Researchers not only need to know how to develop certain indices or tests, how to calculate the mean,
the mode, the median or the standard deviation or chi-square, how to apply particular research
techniques, but they also need to know which of these methods or techniques, are relevant and which are
not, and what would they mean and indicate and why. Researchers also need to understand the
assumptions underlying various techniques and they need to know the criteria by which they can decide
that certain techniques and procedures will be applicable to certain problems and others will not.
Data collection Approaches
The Quantitative data collection methods rely on random sampling and structured data collection
instruments that fit diverse experiences into predetermined response categories. They produce results
that are easy to summarize, compare, and generalize.
Qualitative Research on the other hand generates non-numerical data. It focuses on gathering of mainly
verbal data rather than measurements. Gathered information is then analyzed in an interpretative
manner, subjective, impressionistic or even diagnostic.

Types of research
Observational research:
There are many types of studies which could be defined as observational research
including case studies, ethnographic studies, ethological studies, etc.
Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &
administration

43

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

Correlation research:
In general, correlation research examines the co variation of two or more
variables.
True Experiments:
The true experiment is often thought of as a laboratory study. People who take part
in research involving experiments might be asked to complete various tests to
measure their cognitive abilities (e.g. word recall, attention, concentration,
reasoning ability etc.)
Quasi-Experiments:
Quasi-experiments are very similar to true experiments but use naturally formed or
pre-existing groups.
Surveys
Surveys involve collecting information, usually from fairly large groups of people, by means of
questionnaires but other techniques such as interviews or telephoning may also be used.
Questionnaires
Questionnaires are a good way to obtain information from a large number of people and/or people who
may not have the time to attend an interview or take part in experiments. Questionnaires typically
contain multiple choice questions, attitude scales, closed questions and open-ended questions. The
drawback for researchers is that they usually have a fairly low response rate and people do not always
answer all the questions and/or do not answer them correctly.
Interviews
Interviews are usually carried out in person i.e. face-to-face but can also be administered by telephone or
using more advance computer technology such as Skype.

Muaviath Adam / Ma-12/cyryx collage/ Office management &

administration

44

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

Interviews
Interviews are usually carried out in person i.e. face-to-face but can also be administered by telephone or
using more advance computer technology such as Skype. When conducting the interview, the researcher
might have a check list or a form to record answers. This might even take the form of a questionnaire.
Case studies
Case studies usually involve the detailed study of a particular case (a person or small group). Various
methods of data collection and analysis are used but this typically includes observation and interviews
and may involve consulting other people and personal or public records.

Data collection
For any study there must be data for analysis purpose. Without data there is no means of study.
Data collection plays an important role in any study. It can be collected from various sources. I have
collected the data from two sources which are given below:

Primary Data

Information from correspondents

Information from superiors of the organization
Used questioners to collect data
Table and charts are made to evaluated and analyze the data.

Secondary Data

Published Sources such as Journals, Government Reports, Newspapers, internet and

Magazines etc.
Official Websites are also searched to find data. Like MWSC main web site.

Why I chose questioner to collect data:

Questionnaires.

Yield data from a broader range of people generally than interviews or focus groups.
Provide both quantitative and qualitative data.
Can be used to compare responses among identified subgroups.
Can include a wide variety of question formats, depending on the focus of the evaluation.
Increase buy-in from stakeholders when the questionnaire reflects their own experiences and issues.
Enhance credibility of the evaluation data when well-constructed and when large numbers of potential
respondents complete the questionnaire.
After analysis of data, allow broad sharing of the perspectives of large samples of stakeholder groups.
Provide a learning experience for respondents as they take the time to reflect on their experiences in
order to answer questionnaire items.
Can provide anonymity for respondents, sometimes encouraging more candid responses.
Allow respondents a window of time in which they can respond.

Sample Size:Questionnaire is filled by 21 employees of Male Water Sewerage company (MWSC).The

questionnaire was filled in the office and vital information was collected which was then subjects to:

A pilot survey was conducted before finalizing the questionnaire. One of the superior

checked the survey foams. And then it was distributed to the staffs.
After completion of survey the data was analyzed, evaluated and conclusion was drawn.
At the end, all information was compiled to complete the project report.

Suggestions
Conclusion

8.1 Suggestions
Employees in MWSC have been served for only two years to less than five years. Which means
there is labor turn over. I would suggest that, practice anything but to stimulate the employees in
the organization. Labor turnover is a common thing happening in corporate houses. However it
creates waste of time, effort, materials and costs.
With regards to the present situation of MWSC. My research shows that majority of the
employees have planned to continue their career for less than two years. This shows that still there
is more than 50% chance to lose some highly important employees in the coming future. Hence I
would suggest that, make necessary strategies to make them stay. Like for example, give them
extra bonus, commission, or ask them about their demanding and try to full fill it as much as the
company can.
My research shows that most of the employees are not fully satisfied with their current status in
the organization. Hence, I would advise MWSC to find out the employees educations, skills and
knowledge to set the right person for the right job.
The study of research shows that employees at MWSC are usually recognized as individuals. I
would suggest MWSC to account every single work done by the employees and appreciate them
individually. This will not be cost involving, but it helps in employees motivation.

Project Report on Employee Satisfaction at MWSC

It seems like company is less flexible with the employees family responsibilities. I believe that
employees will not commit their best effort on companies work (their job) if something their own
making them worry. Hence I think it will be a good idea not to be so tough on them with regards
to their family responsibilities.
Some of the employees have said that they are not motivated to see companys success. This
means at some extent they are unprovoked. Hence, I would suggest MWSC to conduct some
motivation trainings.
Some employees have observed and experienced gender discrimination at MWSC. Knowingly
and unknowingly every business makes this kind of discriminations. I would suggest MWSC to
have proper internal communications and make mutual understandings between employees.
The method of recruitment should be improved. This will reduce labour turnover as well as costs.
Promotion policy should be improved.
Management should check the performance of their employees time to time. This leads proper
maintenance of employees with regards to the companys performance. Also it will help to make
necessary strategies for managing human resources.
Overall work environment should also be improved. Management should provide a good working
environment for the employees.
Increase satisfaction and retention of employees.
Management should provide proper facilities for the employees (IT & managing tools).
Company must appoint a good team leader. Sometimes employees get bored on attaining their job
due to the attitudes of their direct supervisor or team leader.
Management must be able to update the employees with respects to companys activities.
Company should not be a barrier to the development of the employees career. Provide employees
with well-defined career paths (including a succession plan), mentors and tuition reimbursement
for job-related education.
Acknowledge non-work priorities by recognizing and responding to employees needs for
greater balance in their lives, since employees will develop loyalty for organizations that respect
them as individuals, not just as workers
Train employees, even if it makes them more attractive to the competition. Without seeing an
opportunity on the horizon, few high potential employees will stay with a company and allow
themselves to grow stagnant.

8.2 Conclusion
This study attempts to evaluate job satisfaction of Male Water Sewerage Company. It focuses on the
relative importance of job satisfaction factors and their impacts on the overall job satisfaction of
employees. The result shows that salary, efficiency in work, fringe supervision, and co-worker relation
are the most important factors contributing to job satisfaction.
The project has given me an opportunity to interact with the Corporate Sector and to actually see how
academic teaching of the classrooms in Management is translated to reality and practice.
Undertaking this project has helped me in learning to think of atopic/subject/issue in a logical manner
and examining the issue in its totality. This has also promoted interaction with people from different
walks of life, experiences and outlooks thus giving me a broader perspective to the issue of training in
particular and the business environment in general.
Finally to conclude, I would like to submit that while pursuing this research, I learnt that it is very
important to learn the background/genesis of the topic/subject/issues first, so as to understand the
requirement/problem at hand and then consider its present status and future prospects so as to arrive at a
suggested set of solutions/recommendations/suggestions so vital to the purpose of such studies.
