A QUESTION OF SECT

Think weve got it wrong or just want to sound off about something. Feel free! Write to friendsgazette@gmail.com

To the editor,
Why do you refer to RSSB as a Sikh sect. You know thats not true . . .
James Watson, London
Dear James,
Thanks for your email.
All reports in Friends' Gazette aim to be impartial, balanced and above all accurate in compliance with
the Editors' Code of Practice 2012.
When referring to RSSB FG has used a number of terms over the last three years.
In the article on page 12 of FG May 2015 "Bollywood star set to marry student" RSSB is referred to as
"the Sikh sect known as . . . " and later in the same article as "the group", "the group's" and "the sect".
In another article "I thought we were going to buy it" on page 3 of the same edition the RSSB group is
referred to throughout as "The Radha Soami Satsang group", "the group" twice, the "strictly lactoveggie group" an "Indian spiritual sect" and "the London group".
Remember that RSSB itself has posted a press cutting (above) on its website in which reference is
made to the "Radha Soami sect" see "Delhi police seek spiritual help . . . "
The Wikipedia definition of 'sect' is as follows: "A sect is a subgroup of a religious, political or
philosophical belief system, usually an offshoot of a larger religious group."
Was Jesus a Jew? No doubt about it.
So in the light of an un-precedented recent visit by RSSB leader Gurinder Singh to the Golden
Temple, the Sikh holy shrine in Amritsar; his controversial attendance at the marriage of the head of
Panthic Sewa Lehar, Baba Baljit Singh Dadu Sahib Wale; RSSB's close and extremely amicable links
with Alkali Dal, the Sikh 'synod'; the dress of the vast majority of adherents including the leader
himself, we think it's pretty obvious of which 'religion' or 'racial group' RSSB might be considered an
"off-shoot" i.e. the Sikh one and it therefore must be accurate to describe it as 'a Sikh sect'.
If you can think of another "larger religious group" RSSB could be an offshoot of in light of the cutting
on its own website please let me know. ED
