which I bought for the purpose, as it certainly wasn't
my dish of tea.
It has been fun flapping around the
island in it, tracking down old fire trails and bridle
paths, and checking up on beach characters (we've been
loaded with hippies this year, and pot smoke rises to

and Bob will return to the Vineyard for Christmas with the family, They have one huge
Newfoundlandpuppy, four Arabian horses, just sold their
boat and are looking for another for sailing.

Hawthorne, Ca. Their family project of rebuilding a
1946 Taylorcraft has finally been completed with NANCY
doing the actual flight test.
"I felt about like I did
back when I mademy first solo." The 24 year old plane,
considered an aviation classic, has been flying for over
a year. This plane was used for background shots when
NANCY
met Mr. Taylor, inventor and designer of the Taylorcraft, whenhe was interviewed for a PlANE& PIlOT magazine article.

flying skills and tows gliders on week-ends in her J-)

A pattern appears - two of the four in New
York are racing skiers and the whole.tribe , apparently
as lithe as grandmother RUTH,use skiing as a springboard for trips to Europe and elswhere. RUTH
met Bill
Holden in Africa not long ago and they reminisced about
"that ghastly ArmyHour Showthat was put on at our
graduation", which Bill claims held up his promotion for
six months. RUTHsold her Navion and quit flying about
eight years ago as she could not seem to get in enough
time to stay proficient.

on the committee since July 1967. As a dancer and musician she was one of the original Busby Berkeley Girls,
but left Warner Brothers Studio to become a WlSP. IAUREl'TAis vice-president of the Whirley Girls, the Ninety
Nines and is on the Board of Directors of the Professional Helicopter Pilots Association, serves in the Air
Force Reserves, and is presently a memberof Govenor
Reagan's Task Force for Aerospace Education. Additionally IAUREl'TA
is a memberof the Screen Actor's Guild
am Musicians' Local 47. In 1949 she won the Power Puff
Derby. She holds a commercial pilot certificate-with
single engine and multi-land; airplane single engine sea;
Rotocraft, Helicopter; Flight Instructor Certificate with
both airplanes and Rotocraft ratings, and is one of the
only two womenin the U.S. holding a FAArating as a
flight examiner for helicopters.

figure they spent 14 years out of the U.S. Expect to

out and touring.

DOROTHY B. HINES MOSHER says she married 21 years ago and
met Foster while flying B-26's on tow-target missions
at Tyndall Field, Fla. DOTTIE has three daughters and
assorted four-legged critters that wander over their 20
acres. They live only a mile from the Waukesha County
Airport and would welcome any old pals who drop by.

pleasure warrants.

FRANKIE LOVVORN BRETHERICK is grounded due to a functional
heart condition, but is so busy with garden club, audubon society that she doesn't have much free time.
After living 19 years in Pennsylvania FRANKIE has to
learn a new type of gardening in Florida.
MARY SHOEMAKER SZABLOWSKI has her license for Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has set up an office for private
practice in her home. MARY also continues in her regular job as school social worker for the Los Angeles
City Schools and will ,be there until eligible for retirement.
BETTY THOMPSON SHARR has "no news to speak of" from Caliente,
Calif. Not even the weather?
MARY BREIDENBACH HANSEN and husband Victor have a view that
won't stop from the Palos Verdes Peninsula wilere they
reside at 28747 Crest Ridge Road. MARY is a technical
artist and illustrator for North American and Victor
works for Autonetics.
LAURA RUTLEDGE GILMER is still directing aircraft on radar
at Davis Montham RAPCON center. Her son Monte is a
senior at high school and quite a jumper so LARRY is
learning the horse business from the ground up.
BEV BEESEMYER arrived at her new home in Oklahoma even before the kitchen cabinets had been installed I Eager?
BEV has semi-retired from business, left the Los Angeles
area after 20 years, and is looking forward to just
fishing and boating. BEV has also started
painting
classes and has been collecting driftwood for candlemaking.
Her new home on the Lake of the Cherokee
sounds great. "Had forgotten what the weather was like,
(being a native Californian) when we were at Sweetwater,
so all this thunder and lightning takes one back to the
'good old days.' ".

BETTY ROTH CROSS had some radical surgery for cancer after
the reunion and was chomping at the bit to get back to
work. Eldest son Don took basic at Sheppard Field,
Texas, then to Chanute AFB for more training and is now
back at George AFB here in Calif.
Carl and BETTY JO STREFF REED have a beautiful Cessna )20
and have been flying allover, including a trip to
Mazatlan with four children for last Christmas. Son
Guy is in the Warrant Officer camidate helicopter
service training at Ft. Wolters, Texas (Mineral Wells).
Guy got his Private license the day before he left.

BEVERLY FRISBIE CARRUTH is in the insurance business in

Chicago under the name of R. Hill Carruth & Son. BEV
wanted to make the reunion but had an operation on her
back instead for removal of a ruptured disc.
EDITH UPSON SMITH reports she has heard from BEEJAY OVERMAN
am BERTA PASKVAN KINNEY, both 44-7, and that they are
all fine.
ALBERTA PASKVAN KINNEY says all that has changed with her

VELTA HANEY BENN is now living in Alexamria,

department these days. ANN won the Thunderbird CC in
Palm Springs and Bel Air C.C. Los Angeles championshipsl Congratulations ANNI
JEAN LANDA made a couple of trips to Mexico this year and
is interested in knowing of any WASPS living in Mexico City, so that she can visit them in future trips.
JOAN ALLEN McKESSON was one of the fireballs behim the San
Diego reunion last April that was such a huge success.

JOAN was "lost" for many years and would
like to bring you up-to-date on the missing years:
After deactivation JOAN returned to USC where she studied to be an Occupational Therapist.
Upon graduation
in 1949 JOAN went to work as a registered occupational
therapist in Los Angeles and was married to Ben in 1950.
She and Ben worked and traveled in Europe, where they
lived in France am Spain for three years. First son
was born in Madrid. In 1956 Ben returned to USC to
study law and received his LLB in 1960 and has been
with the State of California Attorney General's office.
In 196) their home and belongings were destroyed or
washed away in the Baldwin Hills Reservoir failure.
All pictures, yearbooks, documents, memomentos, uniforms,
wings etc. were lost. In 1968 they moved to San Diego
with their two sons and that was when JOAN found BONNIE
DORSEY SHINSKY 44-8 and MEREDITH ROLFE CAMPBELL 4)-5.
BERNICE FALK HAYDU has been working very hard on the WASP
exhibit at the Smithsonian.

killed in a mine accident near Buena Vista, Colo. in
August, 1969. She takes care of the three youngest
children and is a case worker for County Welfare.

ROSTER in order. Four typists quit, the printer refused to work on the "copy" but now she thinks she has

MARY CEYANES WAGNER spent three days with ANN ATKErSON in
her camper. MARY has an airport on their farm and the.
hanger is across the runway from the house. It is an
asphalt strip 3500', so you-all come.
VIRGINIA HASH finished her second term as President of the
Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association in August.
She was
appointed to the Women's Advisory Committee on Aviation
a year ago and also attended the AOPA Plantation Party
in Florida and was on the law panel. Regular work keeps
.her busy trying lawsuits.
FRANCIE MEISNER PARK has gone back to school--ground and
flight to renew her Flight Instructor's rating. Says
it took awhile to find that the lift vectors, quantities, components and other new-fangled nonsense didn't
change the flight characteristics of the airplane since
she tried it 23 years ao. Now, here's a switchl Son
Steve paid for Mama's flying lessons I Steve is now at
the U of Missouri, AFROTC and also does a bit of wrestling. Daughter Jonnie made a grandmother out of FRANCIE in July.
ROSA CHARLYNE CREGER has a new Air Force blue Cadillac
named (what else?) "Fifi". CHARLYNE was Chief of the
Anesthesia Dept. of Louisiana State Hospital in Baton
Rouge, but gave that up to free-lance at hospitals in
the Ark-La-Tex area. CHARLYNE is also engaged in minor
research in new agents--and in her spare time does yard
work, breeds and sells Champion Australian Terriers.
ELEANOR COLLINS FAUST has moved to Brownsville, Vermont and
the welcome mat is out (Skiers, notel). Husband commutes, one chick left, one married and two in college.

NANCY MAYES enjoyed a three-week trip to Europe, London,

Amsterdam, Brussells, Lucerne, Oberammergau for the
Passion Play; Venice, Florence, Rome, Capri, Nice and
Paris. NANCY was also promoted to Lt. Col. in the AF
Reserves, effective this December 5, 1970. This also
completes her 20 years for retirement.
LOUISE ~~GOON THOKEY recovered from a serious operation in
time to move into her new home last December, then
back into the hospital for another operation in Jan.
Reports Debbie in the 8th grade and David in 5th, both
doing just fine.
ErHEL LYTCR MILLER transferred to Luke AFB last summer where
husband is Vice-Commander of the 26th Air Division.
Oldest daughter is married to a medical student at UC
and presented ErHEL with a grandson this year. Youngest daughter is a freshman at Northern Arizona U. Our
sincere sympathy to you for son Bill who was killed in
Viet Naln in April. His twin is at the U of III getting
a Master's Degree in Environmental Geology.
JACQUELINE RILEY ZERAULT has been politicing and won a seat
on the Berrien County Board of Commissioners.

the highlight of the year was a Christmas visit with
RU'rH REESE PHILLIPS 44-10 in Mexico, along with
JEAN TERRELL MORENO, plus husband and six of their 10 children. Reports THAT party was just great and uninterrupted by newspapers, radio or television.

ranch is at Sabinas, Coahuila.
RUTH REES PHILLIPS reports the same. RUTH and husband Duke
fly over to Dallas occasionally to see their two sons
who are in boarding high.school.

must be sort of remote as RUTH says they are still having Indian poaching trouble for venison.
FLORENCE EMIG WHEElER is a homemaking teacher at Healdsburg
Sr. High School. Husband Marshall is a U.S. History
p~of there and at Santa Rosa Jr. College.

MARGIE WAKEHAM 43-6 was visiting her in early November
and says she owns the MEXICO LINDO restaurant in San
Juan Capistrano.

in 1964 said that BETTY SHEA BOYD recently flew down
from CARMICHAEL, CALIF. for a visit.
MARTY WYALL gave a rundown on her falnily. "All the Navy boys
are discharged (2) and headquartered at the farm. Sandy
22 spent nine weeks in summer on campus at Indiana U
with John 19. Sandy has been offered a job as co-pilot
on a DC-3 for Zollner Corp, which is only part-time.
Cary, 23, just returned yesterday from San Diego after
two weeks reserve training on a destroyer.
Pete is in
the 10th grade and Martha the 8. Pete plays football
and Gene takes the varsity pictures, so we attend every
game.

The fun and excitement of those three years together

will never be forgotten by CARO and her fellow flyers: WIN
Vo\JOD 43-7, CARYL JONES STORTZ 43-5, DOT SWAIN LEWIS 44-5,
HARRIET "Choo" TRAIN BlAKE 44-6 and DUKE CALDWELL.
CARO's
brother Bob came to visit one weekend and it was more of an
"experience" than a visitl He had hoped to take CARO out
to dinner and a quiet casual chat, but when visitors arrived
"the whole gang'was included in all activities", so it was
quite a dinner party. Florida was a wonderful place to live
during the post-war period because the military planes and
pilots were adjusting to general aviation status. The
climate made flying a year-round business
.In March 1947 CARD pooled her efforts with other women
in the Florida Chapter of Ninety-Nines and promoted the
first All Woman Air Show in Tampa, Florida.
CARD was picked
for the Sailplane Act, not because she could soar, but because she knew Kim Schribner, Pan American Master Pilot, who
gave his glider for the act.
This same weekend was also historic because one of the
six events was the terminus of the first All Woman Transcontinental Air Race, which .later became popularly known as
the Powder Puff Derby. MARDO CRANE 44-1 tried desperately
to get California WASPS to enter, but time was too short.
Two planes entered but due to engine trouble at the start
Dianna Bixby didn't get her A-26 off and Carolyn west and
BEA MEDES 43-3 flew an Ercoupe in the "race" from Palm
Springs, Calif. to Tampa, Florida.

MARGE HURLBURT 43-6 was the main event and clocked a

new speed record of 337.629 mph on a standard 3-kilometer
course. She sliced 45 mph off JACQUELINE COCHRAN's recordbreaking flight in 1937 in Detroit.

Corsair, which was no stranger to WASPs.

CARD BALEY' OOSCA is a typical Fifi in that flying is

the most wonderful thing that ever entered her life. She
far surpassed many in her field because her love for flying
transformed her into a fierce competitor and precision acrobatic champion, although by nature CARO was neither precise
nor competitive.
CARD's father gave her a chance to explore the possibilities of learning to fly by financing her enrollment in
the Civilian Pilot Training program after her graduation from
St. Marys College in Raleigh, North Carolina. A whole new
world opened up at this opportunity and her CPr license enabeled CARD to fly during the restrictions of wartime.
In
her job in the flight operations office at Patterson Army
Air Base, Dayton, Ohio CARD saw many WASPs fly through but
the age limit forced her to wait until her 21st birthday.
CARD was assigned to the 43-7 class and after receiving
her wings was assigned to B-25 transition at Mather Field,
Sacramento, Calif. Upon completion of their training this
squadron of 20 WASPS were transferred to Biggs Field, El Paso.
There they worked with radar ground troups at Ft. Bliss on
missions which included tracking, searchlight straffing, observing and sleeve towing. Besides the B-25 the WASPs flew
SBD's, SBAC's, AT-7, AT-ll, P-47 , B-26 and B-34 at Biggs.
CARD never took the time to check out in the B-34 as "it
looked so ungainly".
December 20, 1944 was a day when CARD found it harder
to say goodby to the end of her flying dream than to her
buddies. Instead of returning home to Springfield, Ohio,
CARD and KADDY lANDRY 43-7 flew EM COULTER WARE's 43-7 Taylorcraft to Miami, Florida, where many other WASPS resided and
hoped to continue flying. Six Fifis decided to pool their
assets and live a communal life in what became known as the
"WASP NEST". The Nest was a rectangular one-story house
built with all rooms opening onto a screened-in' patio. It
was perfect for women pilots who weren't ready for home making.
They cleaned by sweeping eveything into a rather unattended
garden-pool area.

Other WASPs that March day in 1947 also distinguished

themselves for the record books. CAROLYN CULLEN 44-7 won
the 65 hp race, and ANNE SHIELDS 43-5 came in second. The
acrobatic trophy went to KADDY lANDRY. JANE PAGE HlAVACEK
43-7 won the Military Pilot's Associal award for the BT-13
race over a 15-mile triangular course. Coming in second
was KADDY lANDRY.
The Air Show sparked a new challenge for CARO. She
wanted to perform as an acrobatic pilot and started that
career by flying a Piper J-3 clipped-wing Cub.
Her first
test was against Betty Skelton, but CARD couldn't begin to
rut her Cub through the maneuvers that Betty's Great Lakes
"Lil' Stinker", could do.
CARD began' to look for a plane that suited her style of
flying and bought a Pitts Special that Curt Pitt built around
her. "Black Magic" fit me like a glove and was just like a
bit of heaven. I loved itl It was beautiful and flew just
like it looked." It was only 14 feet long with a 17-foot
wing span; a 125 hp slanted wing bi-plane.
"Black Magic"
could perform everything that CARD required of it: inside,
outside loops, square loops, 4 and 8 point rolls, snaps (inside and outside), and inverted traffic patterns. The next
two years were filled with Air Shows in the United States.
In 1951, the peak of her success was reached, when CARD defeated all others and became the Women's International Aerobatic Champion. That same year she also attained an altitude record .in a Piper Super Cub at 30,203 feet ASL.
Today Mrs. ORSINO BOSCA is happily married to a prominent Springfield, Ohio businessman.
Their four children
are boys D'Orsi, 18, Martin-Bayley, 17; Caro-Gray, 14 and
Marcy, 13. They enjoy skiing in Aspen and trips to Italy.
CARO is an exceptional person in that she was able to adjust
after being a celebrity for five years and living a mobile
life.

I thought I was finished with classes for awhile, but have

just completed my third college semester of instrument
ground school and am cramming to take another FAA Instrument written because I want to become a modern instrument
pilot. I feel so out-dated in this up-to-date flying.
I joined the Ninety-Nines in 1940, but did not become active until 1949, served in several Sectional Offices and I
helped organize the El Cajon Valley Chapter, was Chairman of
the Start of the Powder Puff Derby, of the International Convention and of the International Flight Activities.
I've
been a member of the Civil Air Patrol since 1941 and have a
Search Pilot rating, generally my duties are Medical Officer.

It has been more than 25 years since we flew the Texas Skies
together-25 years since we had our beautiful WASP wings
clipped. I continue to fly because flying has been my first
love, ever since I took my first flight in 1936.
After the WASPs I enlisted in the AAf ~urse Corps, and with
~iss Cochran's help I was admitted directly to the School of
Aviation Medicine at Randolph Field for training for overseas
duty, and graduated in May 1945 with flight ~vrse's Wings. I
enjoyed my studies at Randolph and was appointed Flight Cmdr
of my group. Thanks to my training at Sweetwater I had the
sharpest group of nurses in the school, the Commanding Officer told me so. MY Air Evacuation duties were confined to
the States with home base at Love Field until I received orders to ATC at stockton AAB to prepare for overseas duty.
But the armistice with ,Japan ",as signed, my Army career cut
short. In November I joined my husband, a ~'avy Pilot, in
Pensacola.
There we stayed for 2* years where our son Mike
was born and I got my Civilian Instructors Rating. Then on
to the West Coast and to ~onolulu.
After an enjoyable year in the Islands, my husband was ordered off to Berlin to fly the Airlift.
I soon returned to
Lemon Grove, CA., my home. I tcok the FAA written exam for
an instrument rating and a civilian instrument course. Soon,
thereafter, I flew my first Transcontinental Race from San
Diego to Qami, solo. In the ensuing years I flew 12 or 13
more Transcontinental Races and several small ones. I"never
really expected to win because details annoyed me, but I
sure kept myself current in ~lavigation and flight procedures.
Most of the time I flew a Reechcraft Bonanza, but once I
took a Cherokee 140 and last summer a Comanche 260.
ltr husband returned to North Island for duty and we bought
our home in Lemon Grove. Our family conmined our resourses
and started a retirement hone, named "Hilltop Chateau."
It
sits on a hill overlooking the ocean on one side and the
mountains em the other. 1,./e
jokingly refer to it as "A home
for future Retired Pilots." Maybe it will be, my two brothers are pilots so it sounds like a good idea.

MY

husband died in 1959, as the result cf an auto accident.

I have never re-married.
With ~r work and a son to raise I
didn't have much time for the frivolities of life. Michael
is now 24 and starts his 8th year of college this fall. He
will receive his doctorate in Podiatric Medicine next Spring.
He speaks of going in the service for resi.dency. ~laturally,
I am proud of him, woustache and all. He is tall, dark and
unmarried.
Says he doesn't have ti~e for marriage, but he
seems to have plenty of time for girls.
I have just completed my 13th year as Pub. Health ~urse at
Mount Miguel High School. It is exciting with never a dull
moment and it keeps me thinking young. One of the requirements to te employed by the schools is to have a Bachelor's
Degree.
Since I had nothing but an R.~., I started classes
at college and exactly 12 years later I graduated from San
Diego State with a B.A. and a Health and Development Credential. At the same time, in June, 1968, my son graduated
from Cal Poly with a B.S. in Biological Science.

One of the most exciting things that has happened was my

trip around the world on the University of the Seven Seas in
the fall of 1964. With a semester's leave of absence, I
took the job as nurse on the ship and took my son along as a
student. There were 225 students plus faculty and staff. It
was the most wonderful experience we have ever had. We stopped in ports all around the earth via the Suez Canal, and we
were entertained everywhere by University students and faculty, as well as by Prime }unisters and other dignitaries.
We were dined, danced and entertained by royalty and even
had an audience with the Pope in Rome and Madame Chiang in
Taipai. I enjoyed it so much that I have taken on duties as
a recruiter for the Campus Afloat so if any of you are interested let me know. Among other things I tried to be an ambassador of women pilots, but there are few women flying in
other countries.
I was delighted to meet some pilots in Bombay. He struck up a warm, friendly relationship.
As a result, our Chapter of the Ninety-Nines has sponsored five Indian girl pilots as members.
The are now forming their own
Indian Section. Chanda Sawant visited me 3 summers ago.
She charmed people allover the U.S. 1~th her bubbling personality and even flew in the POl~er Puff Derby with one of
the Ninety-Nines. Cecil Ingram and Associated in Dalhart,
Texas, trained her for her Commercial License, ground and
Flight in about 3 weeks. As a result of all this the Indian
women have just formed the Indian Women Pilot's Association
with Chanda as President.
Since my trip around the world I have helped chaperone and
nurse several group tours from my high school - Good Will
tours to Mexico City, Acapulco, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, etc.
In the summer of 1966 I was the medical officerfor a group
of CAP Cadets that were flown to Fairbanks, Alaska and Elli"son Air Base for a training mission.
It was the summer of
the big flood disaster at Fairbanks and we ran smack into
it. It turned out to be the real thing instead of training
and I can tell you we had the experience of our lives. We
sand-bagged, set up temporary hospitals, and quarters for
all the evacuees of Fairbanks and surrounding areas, and
baby-sitting and child-care centers for the hundreds of persons that came pouring in. The base became completely surrounded by water and soon the only way in or out was by air.
The Governor of Alaska and the Commanding General of the Air
Force flew in to inspect and see that everything was in order. It was - we were on duty for 24 hours per day and by
the time tt was over we knew we had been"somewhere, but the
experience was rewarding and I consider it one of the most
worth,rhile experience of my entire life. Anyway I feel like
a seasoned traveler by land, sea and air, and if I make it
to my retirement I plan to do a lot more traveling.
I am sorry that more of 44-3 could not have been present at
Miss Cochran's reunion last year. It was truly great talk
ing over Sweetwater days, and Miss Cochran treated us royally. There was never a dull moment - golf, ~nmming, dining,
dancing and the works. i'lhenthey have the one in Sweetwater
in the not-to-distant-future,
I hope you will all be there.
I could go on and on, but this will take too long to read
now. Please sit down and tell us what has been happening
to you and yours.

WASP MANNEQUINS IN SANTIAGO BLUES AND ORIGINAL

INSIGNIA PRESENTED TO SAN DIEGO AERO-SPACE MUSEUM.
WASPS in the San Diego area had a wonderful idea which
caroe to full reality on Saturday, April 4, 1970 with the presentation of two mannequins, one in full dress WASP uniform
and the other in the flight uniform complete with insignia,
to the San Diego Aero-Space Museum.
To MEREDITH ROLFE CAMPBELL 4)-5 goes the credit for the
idea and plans for the presentation for WASPS in the San
Diego area. As word spread it grew until it becaroe a reunion
for 60 WASPS and Flight Instructors from nearby areas. ISABELIE McCRAE 44-3, BONNIE DORSAY SHINSKI 44-8, ELEANOR KURTEN
SCHAFER 4)-5, MAXINE STEWARD SMITH 43-6 and WAF BETTY H.
GILLF~ contributed to the complete uniforms.

In the naroe of the WASPS, BEE FALK HAYDU donated her
uniform, wings, class book and other memoriabilia.
After a
visit in 1968 to the Air and Space Museum she was surprised
to find no mention of the WASP. Feeling that history would
pass us by, she contacted the Smithsonian Institution and
has been working with them to see that we have some representation. BEE would like to work with all other WASPS in the
area to try to set up a display that will represent all of
us. BEE would like to thank all of those who have already
sent pictures and stories but feels there is not enough representation of the many WASP accomplishments.
She would
especially like facts and pictures of FIRSTS. That is, the
first girl or group to do something, such as tow targets,
instruct cadets, test fly etc. The information should include the naroe of the Air Base involved, dates and naroes
(as WASPS) and all details. Also PICTURES I BEE is particularly anxious to learn the story about the first girl to fly
a jet ( understands it was ANN BAUMGARTNER CARL 43-5).

some of your treasured memorabilia to a permanent and respected home at the Air Force Museum. This museum is an
official body of the Air Force, and they desire any artifacts or articles such as:
Photographs
Documents and orders
Uniforms or parts of uniforms
Insignia
Any items which may have been "liberated"
The Air Force Museum cooperated fully with the Smithsonian and other museums to make loans of material for display.

The mannequins were presented to the San Diego AeroSpace Museum as the beginning of a permanent exhibit of uniforms, history and memorabilia of the WASP prograro. Following the presentation the WASPS and Instructors descended on
Boom Trenchard's Flare Path Restaurant, located at the east
end of Lindbergh Field, to enjoy an evening of cocktails,
dinner and prograro. ISABELIE McCRAE worked on the favors,
JOYCE SHERWOOD SECCIANI 43-3 did the secretarial work, SUNNY
BURNS McBRIDE 43-5 made the clever table decorations and BARBARA HERSHEY TUCKER 44-9 handled the registrations.
Colonel Owen Clarke, USAF Retired, was Master of Ceremonies for the evenings program. Col. Clarke is the Executive
Director of the Aero-Space Museum and was available for advice on the plans for the exhibit from the start. Brother
Benjaroin Franklin, from the San Diego Christ Center, gave the
Invocation.
HAZEL STAHFERHOHN 44_4 told of the WASPS' flying today and ISABELLE McCRAE spoke of local WASP doings.
Flight Instructor D. E. Fincher and his brother Kenneth related anecdotes of Avenger Field and Instructor Fred Breise
showed his personal colored movies taken at Avenger Field.
BONNIE and George SHINSKI ran the WASP film provided by
BETTY JANE WILLIAMS 44-6.
Boom Trenchard's is a museum in its own right. They
have an exceptional exhibit of World War I aviation artifacts and pictures and they provided the group with B,yron
Jacquot's beautiful white AT-6 for picture taking and rides.
Colonel Cary of Boom's provided a Taylor Cub for use in publicity.
Many WASPS have already donated or loaned their memorabilia for use in the display at the Museum, but any other
donations will be greatly received.
Other items needed:
Another set of wings for one mannequin, officers insignia
for dress beret, up-to-date information and pictures of the
many different branches of the Air Force in which the WASPS
served and model airplanes of the types flown. It was agreed
that the mannequins and all the memorabilia should of necessity be housed in a display case, WASPS who attended the
reunion and others who have heard of the need for a glass
.display case, have made individual contributions from $1.00
to $5.00. To date donations total $111.00 but considerable
more money is needed. Please send your donations of cash or

Col. Owen Clark, Director of the Museum, sent the following message after the presentation:
"The San Diego Aero-Space Museum is proud to be associated in a project paying tribute to the women flyers, WASPS
of World War II. The lady pilots contributed greatly to the
WWII effort through their exemplary services in ferrying aircraft, towing targets and training missions.
The Museum is
now displaying some of the WASPS uniforms along with a few
items of memorabilia.
In time it is hoped that this exhibit
will tell to the public, in inspirational form, the full
story of the contribution of the WASPS in our national defense. It should be mentioned that over 5,000,000 visitors
a year will.be able to see the WASP exhibit."

BYRD HOWELL GRANGER 43-1 wrote to Mr. Walt Disney requesting a WASP squadron insignia.
Mr. Disney wrote back,
sending the gay young blade-ess FIFINELIA, the female
version of a gremlin.
BETTY WILLIAMS 44-6 writes that she checked with the
Public Relations Office of Disney studios recently and they
report the studio was planning on producing a film on gremlins in 1940 for the British.
FIFINELlA, her name in the
fi:j.m,was the little female gremlin created especially for
the film, but it was never produced. "Gremlin" is defined
as a mischievous invisible being, said by World War II pilots
to cause all sorts of things to go wrong with airplanes.
All we know is that FIFI was a "good little gremlin" adopted by the WASPS to guide each of us safely back to our bases.
BETTY also reports that Disney created 2200 insignia for
various military organizations during the war.

A new feature can be run in the NEWSLETTER if there is

enough interest at the local level. It has been suggested
that dates for annual or semi-annual "get-togethers" be listed in the NEWSIErTER so that plans can be made well in advance of the event.

The award was created in 1956 and has been given to less
than 40 people with Mrs. Deaton the only woman to receive it.
In a recent letter, "Dedie" tell us: "I've been devoting
most of my time to Red Cross work, Since 1957 I have been a
National Field Volunteer for the Red Cross--which means being
a full member of the national staff except for not drawing a
salary.
It has been most gratifying - I'm still "up to my
neck" and have continued my Water Safety work in addition.
I'm still a Water Safety Instructor trainer - last summer and
fall retrained 67 WSI's in our new program, which includes
skin-diving safety so I had to don the mask, snorkle and fins!
In addition I also have several classes of new WSI's."
This award was originally created for professionals who
had performed more than thirty years, over and above the line
of duty.

WASP MEMORIAL MARKERS

PRESIDENT'S MISCELLANY

.The Mayor of Sweetwater, City Manager, members of the

Chamber of Commerce and other civic groups have been in contact with Mrs. Clifford Deaton regarding a permanent granite
marker and highway marker in honor of the WASPS.

Twenty-eight years ago when the WAFS (Women's Auxiliary

Ferry Squadron) was formed and the Women's Training Command
initiated - there emerged from the distaff members of our
country a nucleus of women pilots destined to grow into a
group of talented and dedicated pilots 1027 strong.

The Texas Historical Survey Committee proposes a large

granite marker, 6' high by J' wide and l' deep, appropriately
inscribed with the historical data regarding the WASP program. This marker would be permanently placed in the Court
House Square, or on the new museum grounds.
Cost of this
granite marker if $1,712.00 including freight.

Records reflect the commendable jobs accomplished by

these gals in the numerous and varied phases of aviation during World War II. In August 194J, General Hap Arnold titled
these women pilots WASP (Women's Air Force Service Pilots).

The metal highway marker, will also have the WASP history inscribed on the 27" by 42" sign and be placed along the
highway.
The cost of this is $400.00. The City Manager has
offered to have his crews install the markers and the other
civic leaders have promised their enthusiastic support and
some financial assistance.
The Texas Historical Committee
will also cooperate with us in preparing both markers.

Upon deactivation, December 20, 1944, the spirit of

camaradrie remained by organizing the Order of Fifinella, so
named in honor of our beautiful Fifi emblem designed by the
late Walt Disney. Although reunions have been scarce, we owe
thanks to many WASPS for struggling to keep the Order of Fifinella alive. May Marty Wyall always have the wind at her
back for her extra special efforts in refusing to let the organization
die and inspiring Fifi's to make it the organization it should be.

The permanent memorial and highway marker deserve our

support.
It will take six months after the order is placed
for the markers to be delivered.
A donation of $5.00-7.00
each will enable us to go ahead with this project. PLEASE

WASP REUNION

Your Officers are basically a committee to perpetuate

the Order of Fifinella; to maintain a WASP History; to be
contacts for individuals and Class Secretaries; to try and
keep current address information and to arrange reunions.
The next national reunion is tentatively scheduled for.Spring
of 1974 in Oklahoma City - unless an earlier reunion is preferred at Sweetwater to coincide with a WASP Memorial dedication.

Wouldn't it be great to be at the Presentation of the

Memorial Markers at Sweetwater?
We can plan our next reunion for that time. DEDIE says that Sweetwater has changed
beyond recognition, the Old Bluebonnet Hotel is no more, but
there are a number of "elegant" new motels, air-conditioned.

Until further discussion and appropriate action

group. No paid offices or officers; no dues, bylaws
sessments - the Roster and NEWSLETTER to be supported

Avenger Field is a full service airport with all octane

gas except jet. Provisions will be made for tie downs and
"anything else that is needed." Transportation from the airport and around town will be taken care of by the Sweetwater
Committee.

Since barely half of the WASPS responded this year with

their $5.00 donation - we couldn't meet our proposed early
1970 Roster printing and mailing, which includes the Order of
Fifinella membership card.

DEDIE reports Avenger Field is also a campus for Texas

State Technical Institute for technical and vocational train_
ing of all kinds. The only buildings left from the original
installations are the two big metal hangers, and a manufacturing plant uses one of the hangers. Everything else burned
down long ago.
RIG EDWARDS, who is in charge of the memorial and chief
"ramrodder" at Sweetwater, says they often have rodeos, conventions and such with 400 visitors or more, so he is sure
Sweetwater could handle all WASPS. RIG also said "there are
a number of Sweetwater people who have already said. they
wanted to have their "special girls" in their homes, We will
manage to take care of all who come."
