PhD Research Project
sustaining downstream river flows in lowland areas, maintaining water supplies and aquatic habitats. Yet quantitative studies
of groundwater in montane areas remain rare. Geological complexity coupled with logistical difficulties in attaining data by
traditional techniques dictate that such systems are poorly understood. However, over the past decade, advances in
geophysics and groundwater modelling tools means that hydrogeologists are now better equipped to characterise aquifers in
montane regions and predict likely responses to climatic change and other environmental pressures such as land-use
change.
This project will look to apply geophysical and groundwater modelling techniques to groundwater resources in headwater
catchments of the River Dee (Cairngorm Mountains, Scotland). The Dee is one of the UKs most important rivers; it has high
conservation value (EU Habitats Directive), sustains an Atlantic salmon fishery worth ~20m to the local economy and
provides drinking water for the city of Aberdeen (~300,000 people). Groundwater contributions to river flow are particularly
critical
during
low
flow
periods.
They
are
however,
poorly
monitored.
This project aims to better understand these groundwater resources and provide evidence-base for projecting their response
to predicted climatic change. The study will integrate field and modelling works in representative headwater catchments of
the Dee that contain important aquifers, both in the bedrock and in superficial glacial deposits. This will significantly enhance
existing work. The project will involve training in borehole installation, aquifer characterisation and monitoring, application of
geophysical methods (e.g. ERT, GPR), use of environmental tracers and groundwater modelling. This will provide a unique,
multi-disciplinary approach to understanding groundwater function. A catchment-scale numerical model will be applied to (i)
test/revise the aquifers conceptual model, hydraulic properties and boundary conditions and (ii) assess the magnitude and
spatial
distribution
of
interactions

groundwater
and

water.
The successful applicant should have, or expect to have, an Honours Degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Geology or
physical geography, environmental or civil engineering, environmental sciences with knowledge of Hydrogeology, Geological
environments, Geological structures, Hydrology, Basic fluid dynamics, Basic geophysics, Water resources engineering
