Session Abstract

Come and learn how Erickson Living achieved deployment success using Cisco ME4600 GPON
Solution. Guest Presenter: Jay Romero, Sr.Director - IT Operations.

Passive Optical Networks (PON) provides an effective and efficient way of providing fiber based
high speed access to residential and business users. With the ever-growing demand for higher
bandwidth, service providers are looking for fiber solutions that are cost-effective and easy to
deploy and manage.

This session will provide an insight into PON technology, with a focus on Gigabit-Capable PON.
Attendees will learn basic design principles and applicable use cases for architecting a GPON
Network using the Cisco ME4600 OLT and ONT/ONU.

The presentation will outline the requirements to configure and verify an end-to-end service over
ME4600 OLT. Redundancy mechanisms, such as Type B protection, in a GPON based
environment will also be covered.

Attendees will walk away from this session with a firm understanding of the GPON technology, a
clear view of applicability of GPON vs point-to-point ethernet for various scenarios and reference
designs for an effective, fast and reliable GPON network using Cisco ME4600 series of OLT and
ONT products.

PON Technology
Fundamentals

Evolution of Ethernet-based FTTH solutions

Higher speeds

10 Gigabit Ethernet technology (10GBase-BX) has moved to access in some cases

Longer reach

Disctances of 10km and higher with mass-market BX-optics

Extended reach modules available at low premium makes up to 70km possible without
reach extender coverage of rural areas, or for CO consolidation

Higher packaging densities

Compact-SFP (two independent transceivers in one SFP package) - first step in multichannel optics
significant increase in number of subscriber terminations per rack smaller footprint
easier fiber management from single-fiber to multi-fiber patch cable
reduction in power consumption
Passive Optical Network PON is

tailor made for these requirements

FTTH / FTTB Fiber Technologies

Ethernet

Dedicated Bandwidth
Easier BW upgrades
Minimal Access/Agg dependency
More Power/Space usage at CO
More fiber duct utilization
PON
Lower CAPEX
Lower power consumption
Less CO rack space needed
Asymmetric BW split
More complex troubleshooting

Erickson Challenges

Increasing need for quality networking and IT services for staff and residents

The need for ubiquitous wireless connectivity throughout the campus to

mobilize our staff and residents

Ability to add additional services more timely and cost effectively to continue to
improve the resident experience

Current Landscape

Wireless Internet

Phone Services

Limited access available provided in common areas and skilled nursing facility only
The residents and staff have been asking for wireless for years
New residents are seeing other facilities that already provide this service
Adult children are coming to expect these services

New resident satisfaction is low in regard to phone service

Transferring phone numbers between Independent Living and Continuing Care facility is
challenging
Cellular service is inconsistent

Complicated Infrastructure

Multiple wired installations are cumbersome and some are over 20 years old
Multiple systems with different technology requirements are hard to manage

Erickson Vision and Goals

Provide a holistic experience that connects Residents to each other, their

communities, their families and to a set of services that enrich their lives

Lay the foundation for connectivity for the Internet of Things

Create competitive advantage by advancing the Digital Resident Strategy

Solution: Erickson Connect

How is it different than what we already have?

Today each system has its own road, meaning that for everything we put in place we need
to run cabling to support it.
With Connect, we will have one highway that will enable all of our current and future
services.
