4301isthebasicvariantwithnormalcarbonandnickelcontent.
TheausteniticCrNistandardgradesarethemostwidelyused
groupofstainlesssteels.Theirwellbalancedmaterialproperties
makethemsuitableforthefabricationofmanyproducts.
Grade4301isavailableinmanyproductformsanddimensions,
commonlyalsofrommanystainlesssteelstockholders.Itcanbe

compoundsoverawidetemperatureandconcentrationrange.Itcanwithstandmanyorganicandsufficientlydiluted
mineralacidsdependingonthetemperatureofthesolution.Grade4301maysufferfromuniformcorrosioninmineral

Inaqueoussolutionscontaininghalogenideslikee.g.chloridesorbromides,pittingandcrevicecorrosionmayoccur
dependingonhalogenideconcentration,temperature,pHvalue,concentrationofoxidizingcompoundsandcrevice
geometry,ifapplicable.Forashortperiodoftime,forinstanceduringcookingoffoodinstainlesssteeldishes,grade
4301cantolerateevenrelativelyhighchlorideconcentrations.Thepresenceofcorrosioninhibitingoraccelerating
compoundslikee.g.transitionmetalionsororganiccompoundsmayinfluencethecorrosionbehaviourofgrade4301.
Grade4301ispronetochlorideinducedstresscorrosioncrackingattemperaturesoverabout50Cdependingonthe
appliedstressandthechlorideconcentrationintheenvironment.Priorcolddeformationofthestructureunderload
increasestheriskforstresscorrosioncracking.
Grade4301canbeusedforindoorandoutdoorapplicationsinruralareasandurbanenvironmentswherechloride
contaminationislow.Thebestmaterialperformanceisreachedusuallywiththehelpofadequatedesign,correctpost
weldtreatmentandregularcleaningduringuse(ifapplicable).

Mechanicalproperties
Themechanicalpropertiesoftheavailableproductsinsoftannealedconditionatroomtemperaturearegiveninthe
tablebelow.Moderatestrengthscanbereachedatelevatedtemperatures(~550C).Temperaturesforexcessive
scalingarecloseto850C.Thisgradeamongotherausteniticcorrosionresistantsteelsexhibitsveryhighductilityand
highelongationtofracture.Itisnotsusceptibletobrittlefractureinthesolutionannealedcondition.
Thisausteniticgradeisavailablealsointemperrolledcondition.Higherstrengthoftheproductcanbeachieved,when
finalcoldrollingprocessiscontrolledandthematerialislefttoworkhardenedcondition.Strengthclassesaregivenin

heading,drawingandbending.Anycoldworkingoperationswillincreasethestrengthandhardnessofthematerialand
mayleaveitslightlymagnetic.Workhardeningisaccentuatedbythepartialtransformationoftheaustenitephaseofthe
materialtohardmartensite.
Hotforming
Hotworkingcanbecarriedoutinthe850C1150Crange.Formaximumcorrosionresistance,forgingshouldbe
annealedat1050Candrapidlycooledinairorwaterafterhotworkingoperations.
Machining
Duetotheirhightoughnessandworkhardeningbehaviourausteniticsteelsaremoredifficulttomachinethancarbon
steelsbutarestillcomparativelyeasytomachinecomparedtomorehighlyalloyedstainlesssteelgrades.Theyrequire
highercuttingforcesthancarbonsteels,showresistancetochipbreakingandhaveahightendencytobuiltupedge
formation.Thebestmachiningresultsareobtainedbyusinghighpowerequipment,sharptoolingandarigidsetup.
Bettermachinabilityperformanceis achievedbyPRODECversions,whichhavebeenmodifiedforimproved
machinability.PRODECisavailableashotrolledplateandbarin4301,4307,4401,4404,4436and4432.
Welding
Austeniticstainlesssteel4301gradehasexcellentweldabilityandissuitedtoafullrangeofconventionalwelding
methods(likeMMA,MIG,MAG,TIG,SAW,LBWorRSW),exceptgaswelding.
Austenitic4301haveabout50%higherthermalexpansionandlowerheatconductivitycomparedtocarbonsteels.This
meansthatlargerdeformationandhighershrinkagestressesmayresultfromwelding.
Inthinsections,autogenousweldingmaybeused.Inthickersection,lowcarboncontaininggrade4307ispreferred,
andtoensurethattheweldmetalproperties(e.g.strength,corrosionresistance)areequivalenttothoseoftheparent
metal,matchingorslightlyoveralloyedfillersshouldpreferablybeused.Recommendedfillermetalis199L.
Generallypostweldheattreatmentisnotrequired.Inspecialcaseswithhighrisksofstresscorrosioncrackingor
fatigue,stressrelieftreatmentmaybeconsidered.
Inordertofullyrestorethecorrosionresistanceoftheweldseam,thewelddiscolorationshouldberemovedbypickling
andpassivation.
