Textbook: Introduction to Probability and Statistics; Principles and applications for Engineering and the
Computing Sciences by J. Susan Milton and Jesse Arnold ISBN:9780072468366
Course goals: Introduce basic concepts of probability and statistical inference with discussion of applications to
computer science. Topics include basic probability, conditional probability, random variables, common distributions,
statistical inference (estimation, tests, and regression).
Prerequisites: Math 2B; ICS or Math 6A or Math 3A. No credit for Math 7/ Stat 7 / BioSci 7 if taken after
Math67/Stat 67.
Grading and Course Requirements: There will be three problem sets assigned (50 pts each) and due the date of
each exam. There will be two midterms Monday, July 6th and Friday, July 17th) and final exam (scheduled for
Wednesday, July 29th from 1-2:50). Course grades are determined by performance on this work as follows:
homework (150 pts or 30%), midterms (100 pts or 20% each), final exam (150 pts or 30%).
Course policies:

To receive credit for homework you must show your work and justify your answers. If you are having
trouble, talk to the instructor or TA, or try a similar example in the textbook. You are allowed, even
encouraged, to discuss problems with your classmates, but you MUST write up your work independently.
Working in groups has been shown to be an effective way to learn a challenging subject, but copying or
otherwise offering anothers work as ones own is academic dishonesty and, on this point, you are
encouraged to familiarize yourself with University policy.

Please submit your work as paper copy only, as electronic submissions are not accepted.

Late homework is not accepted.

You are encouraged to attend the discussion sessions. During the discussion the instructor will offer
coaching on all assignments, answer questions about the material, or introduce topical ideas.

Exams cannot be taken at any other time than the dates scheduled except under extenuating circumstances.
