1. Warning notices
Please note that DENON can assume no liability for any damage, should the update fail to
execute properly. DENON does not offer any technical support or other services in respect of the
software.
The update restores all the A/V amplifier default settings. Therefore, you will need to run AUTO
SETUP following an update.
Please read this guide in its entirety before carrying out an update.
a) During the update, do not under any circumstances switch off the unit's power or activate any
buttons on the unit or its remote control.
b) Do not unplug any cables during the update.
c) Do not run any other applications on your PC during the update.
d) Before the update, close any memory resident programs on the PC.
e) Deactivate your screensaver along with all power-saving measures.
f)

Switch off your PCs power management feature.

g) If you are using a laptop or notebook, make sure that there is a stable power supply available.
h) Do not place cables near sources of electronic interference.
i)

Before starting the update, please switch the AVR-2808 off at the power switch (ON/OFF).

j)

Always switch the unit on in accordance with the instructions in this guide.

k) The actual update process takes approximately 10 minutes.


l)

Progress is tracked continuously in a progress bar to keep you up to date with the program at all
times. Do not touch the PC, A/V amplifier or cables during the update.

2. Preparatory steps
2.1 Getting your Personal Computer (PC) ready for the update
Minimum hardware and software requirements:

Windows XP Home Edition/Professional SP1 or higher
* Windows Vista and Windows 7 (Home Premium or higher version)
are able to update properly. Tested only with 32 bit OS.
* Window 2000 is impossible to use.

2.2 Getting the cable ready
You should only use a straight RS-232C serial cable with male and female
connectors for the update.

1. Connect the RS-232C cable between RS-232C port of PC and RS-232C port on the Rear panel of
A/V Receiver.

4. Firmware update procedure


4.1 Installing the D&M Firmware Writer
1. Please install DFW_0028_AVR_AVC2309_(Rev.1.0.11).exe.to any folder of your PC.
2. Please make shortcut icon on your PC.:

4.2 Procedure of updating for firmware


1. Please initialize the unit as follow: Turn on the power of unit while pressing the [INPUT
MODE] button and [SPEAKER] button simultaneously.
2. When FL Display will be indicated complete is the unit inzialized.
4.3 Procedure of updating for firmware by DFW (D&M Firmware Writer)"

CAUTION!:
When you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, please set up the Run this program in
compatibility mode of page 7~12 before updating.
Click the shortcut icon on your PC.

4.4 Checking communication


1. Click [Load] button, and select the Update file.
2. Select the serial port number of RS-232 in PC
3. Click the [Check communication] button.

4. If a connection can be established between the PC and


A/V amplifier, the Communication check OK dialog box
will appear. Click [OK] to acknowledge the message.

5. If no connection can be established between the PC and


A/V amplifier, you will see the message Communication
check NG!.
In this case, please check the following:
a) Check the connection (see Section 3.1).
b) Check that the A/V amplifier has been switched on (see Section 4.2).
c) Check the COM port number (see Section 4.4).

4.5 Starting the firmware update


1. Click [Update]. The A/V
amplifier will switch to
Update mode. The LED
on the ON/STANDBY
switch will light up red.

Although the update normally takes approximately 10 minutes, it may sometimes take longer.
Progress is tracked continuously in a progress bar to keep you up to date with the program at all times.

Do not touch the PC, A/V amplifier or cables during the update.

4.6 Completing the firmware update


1. As soon as the firmware update has finished, the Update
completed dialog box will appear. The amplifier will restart in
normal mode. At the end of the update, switch the A/V amplifier
off completely by pressing the ON/OFF switch. Click OK to
confirm the dialog box. Now unplug the RS-232 cable from the amplifier before switching the
amplifier back on. That is the end of the update process.

Note: If the software update cannot be completed, the Update


Failed message will appear. In this case, switch off the A/V amplifier
and attempt the update again.

5. Firmware update procedure in safe mode


If you have not been able to complete the upgrade successfully and/or are unable to start up the
A/V receiver, try the process again in safe mode.
5.1 Starting the update
1. Connect the A/V amplifier to your PC (see Point 3.a).
2. Keep the [SURROUND MODE [<]] + [MENU] buttons pressed while you power up the A/V
amplifier with the ON/OFF switch.
3. The power LED will light up red. Safe update mode is now active.
4. Now attempt the update again in accordance with Section 4.4.
