Installing Airport Design Editor Using the Full Installer

This tutorial explains how the latest full installer for ADE is used to install ADE or update an existing
version. The installer is sophisticated and is working on a complex piece of software. Whilst we do
take every effort to ensure a smooth and trouble free installation things can go wrong. There is an
option to back up an existing installation so please do not skip that step.
There are sections of the installer that are not described in this tutorial, These steps are self
explanatory and we have focused on the important variations in installation that can arise depending
on you current installation.

Download the Installer Package

The Contents of the Installer Package

Before running the installer please be sure to read any documents included with installer
Make sure that you do not have other programs running - be especially sure that ADE is not
running
Double click the installer executable
Note that you may get the usual User Access Warning dialog asking if you want to install this
software.
The installer can do one of three things depending on what it finds on your computer:
1. If no other version of ADE is found then it will start a clean installation
2. If another earlier version is found then then it will update the existing installation
3. If another version is found that is newer than the installer then the installer will stop
IMPORTANT
The installer can only find previous ADE installations made by a previous full installer. This can
create problems if you have a previous version that was installed via a manual installation zip. If you
have a previous installation and the installer does not find it then you have the following choices:
1. Install this version in a different folder than the existing version. You may prefer this option
since you can be sure that no data will be lost from the existing installation - however none of
your data about settings, library objects and so on will be in the new version and you will
need to manually copy files. This is outside the scope of this tutorial
2. Install this version into the same folder as the existing version. This is similar to updating the
existing version. Your existing settings should be preserved but be sure to use the backup
option

found it.

License Agreement
ADE comes with the usual license agreement. This explains the conditions under which you can use
the software. Please read it carefully.
1. You can print the license for your records if you wish. A copy is installed in the manuals
folder.
2. If you accept the agreement then click 'I accept the agreement'
3. If you do not accept this agreement then you muxt click Cancel and not continue with the
installation
4. The next button will be inactive until you accept the agreement - then you may click it to
proceed to the next step.

Set the Destination Folder

1. The installer will now offer the installation location. We strongly recommend you use the
default folder. If you wish to place it in another drive then just change the drive letter. DO
NOT install ADE inside any copy of FS. This will almost certainly cause significant problems
2. If yu do wish to change the folder in a more radical way then use the broawse button. You
might want to change this if you are installing alongside an existing manually installed version
of ADE. If you wish to install over a manual install then first check the folder that it is installed
in and then use the browse button to put that folder name in 1.
3. Click Next to proceed
4. At any time you can click the Back button to go back to a previous state
5. At any time you can click the Cancel button to stop the installation

Exit Setup
If you choose Cancel at any point you will see this message. Choose Yes to exit the setup and
cancel the installation. If you choose No then you will be returned to the current step in the installer.

Choose the Installation Options

1. Choose the options that you wish
2. It is strongly recommended that you allow the installer to make a backup of any existing files
in the destination folder. Of course if you are installing into this folder for the first time it will be
empty and so will the backup
3. Click Next to Proceed

Additional Tools
ADE comes with some extra tools created by Martin Gossmann. We recommend that you install
them along with ADE.
1. The AI Aircraft Editor allows you to edit the configuration of AI Aircraft.
2. The ADE Environment Checker will check your computer to see if everything is in place to
run ADE properly.
3. Please be aware that these tools install extra controls into the Windows\System32 folder if
they are not already there. These controls are used by many programs and may well be
present. In case other programs are using them they will not be removed if you decide to
uninstall ADE at a later date
4. Choose which additional tools to install and then click the Next button.

Run the Installer to Update an Existing Version

If the installer finds a current version then this screen will be displayed
1. The version that will be installed is 1.55.4805.28665
2. The version that will be updated is 1.50.18.197
3. Click the Next button to start the installation
Note that in this case you will not be offered an installation folder. The installer will use the folder
where the current version is located and will update the files in there. All the other steps are the
same as for the clean installation.
A Final Caution
We are aware of a scenario where a user may have an earlier version of ADE installed via the
installer (say 1.47) and a later installed manually (say 1.50). Be warned that the installer will be
updating 1.47 in this case and not 1.50. In future we will not be offering manual installation packages
in part to avoid complex setups like the one described here.

2. The version that is in the installer is 1.55.4805.28665
No installation is needed so click the OK button and the installer will close without making any
changes to your computer.

Update Available
ADE has an on-line updater. This will check to see if there are any updates available. In most cases
there will be an update. We only create full installers once in a while when there is a major upgrade
or major new features. So chances are you will see the updater offering an update when you first run
ADE after the installation. The updater will tell you in two places
1. In the status bar and
2. As a notify icon in the task bar. This will show a tooltip for a short while alerting you to the
update. This will then fade.
You do not have to apply the update. However we strongly advise that you do so. Updates will
almost always contain fixes to bugs. In some cases these bugs may stop ADE working properly and
are called Critical bugs.

Update Details
Click on either the task bar notify icon or the button in the status bar and the installer will display the
update details.
1. The first line of the details will always tell you if the update is Critical or not. Even if it is not
we do advise that you accept the update. If you choose not to then the Updater will tell you
there is an update each time you start the program. Just ignore it if you do not want to make
an update at the time.
2. Click the Update button to apply the update. You will see some dialogs as the update process
goes on. When it is complete ADE will be restarted in the new version
Please note that updates are cumulative so if you do not update on a particular version then the next
update when it is made available will include any previous updates.

Final Caution
We are aware that if you have unsaved work on a project and decide to apply an update then you
will currently lose the unsaved work. We are working on a fix to this. However currently the Updater
will close and restart ADE without offering you the chance to save your work. So until we find the fix
for this please save any work before applying the update.
