Welcome
Thanks to everyone who helped make R&S happen this year. Please take good care of
each other and our weekend home at Fishers Paradise. Big thanks to Chris & Julie and to
all our neighbours for sharing their neck of the woods with us.
R&S is all about loving and enjoying and being part of the beauty of it all. Real life is not
always conducive to this - I hope this weekend makes you all happy. I hope that happiness
is so abundant here that R&S can spill over into your otherwise life. It is so simple but yet
hard to do.
Admit it. You arent like them. Youre not even close. You may occasionally dress yourself
up as one of them, watch the same mindless television shows as they do, maybe even
eat the same fast food sometimes. But it seems that the more you try to fit in, the more
you feel like an outsider, watching the normal people as they go about their automatic
existences. For every time you say club passwords like Have a nice day and Weathers
awful today, eh?, you yearn inside to say forbidden things like Tell me something that
makes you cry or What do you think dj vu is for?. Face it, you even want to talk to that
girl in the elevator. But what if that girl in the elevator, and the balding man who walks past
your cubicle at work, are thinking the same thing? Who knows what you might learn from
taking a chance on conversation with a stranger? Everyone carries a piece of the puzzle.
Nobody comes into your life by mere coincidence. Trust your instincts. Do the unexpected.
Find the others. - Timothy Leary
Thanks for helping me find you.
Be kind and the world will change.

LAND ART WITH MYTHS AND MIRRORS

Myths and Mirrors, a multi-disciplinary Sudbury-based community

natural elements to installations begun earlier in the week. Myths
and Mirrors Community Arts builds community by giving people a
voice through collaborative art making, story sharing and infusing

Questions & Answers

FIREWORKS? No. Never. Ever. In fact, we will ask you to leave if you set them off. So,
please dont put us, or yourself in that situation. Save them for your birthday or Canada
Day. Theyre just not safe with so many people around.
BURNT YOUR HAND, CUT YOUR TOE ... TOO MUCH SUN? Go visit the Nurse Right Now
(NRN) booth for first aid on site. Its nurses have a wide range of backgrounds from the ER
to the OR and from paediatrics to geriatrics. St. Johns Ambulance will also be on hand to
help out.
WHAT IF IM REALLY INJURED/SICK? The closest emergency room is at the West Nipissing
Health Centre, 145 Main Street, Sturgeon Falls. Turn right when you leave the property and
follow the signs to Sturgeon -- it is about a 25 minute drive.
WHAT HAS LEAVES OF THREE AND YOURE ADVISED TO LET IT BE? Poison ivy. While
we have taken precautions to remove this highly reactive vine, keep an eye out and stick
to the trails.
YIKES IS THAT THUNDER AND LIGHTNING? Follow the 30-30 rule. If there are 30 seconds
or less between thunder and lightning take cover in a vehicle, building or low-lying area
away from tall trees. Wait until 30 minutes after the last thunder before venturing out. Stay
low but never lie down on the ground and keep both feet together to minimize ground
current.
CAN I START A FIRE? Fires need to be contained in fire pits. Wood will be provided in drop
off areas. MNR fire bans apply to R&S. If youre planning on cooking, bring a stove. Be sure
to have water standing by if you need to douse the fire in an emergency.
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY VEHICLE? Park it away from the campsites. Once the festival
starts no driving on site! Riders from the Sudbury Cyclists Union will help you get your
gear in with bike trailers, or use one of our handy dollies.
GETTING AROUND AT R&S? Bikes are the best. When walking, protect and cover your toes.
A flashlight really helps in making your way to the late night campfire stage at the beach.
CAN I SWIM AND SAUNA? Go for it at your own risk and never under the influence! Note:
Our beach area is unsupervised and the Sturgeon River has a current. You can also feel
free to jump in the oxbow beside the main stage too. Children must be supervised by their
parents in the water and sauna at all times.
I AM SO THIRSTY There is free drinking water available via a fill station near the Main
Stage. Bring containers.
WHAT ABOUT SMOKING? Discretion is always appreciated, especially around children.
Make sure your butts are well put out and disposed of properly in a tin can or your pocket.
Butts dont biodegrade and we want to keep Fishers Paradise free of them.
WOOF/NEIGH? Dogs are awesome but need to be on a leash. Please dont bring them
directly in front of the main stage it is a stressful place for dogs and a nice place for
humans to sit on the grass. Same applies to horses.

WHERE CAN I WASH MY BODY? If you want to freshen up, go for a swim and sauna. But
dont use soap or shampoo with phosphates in the river! Think biodegradable soap.
IS THIS A BYOB FESTIVAL? Open alcohol at campsite is OK. No open alcohol (walking with
beer can) outside campsites please. No glass!
WHERES THE CLOSEST PLACE TO STOCK UP? Turn left as you leave the property and
9 kms will take you to the LCBO in River Valley. River Valley also has a chip stand and a
Family Restaurant/bluegrass bar. Or turn right, and about 6 kms will take you to Fields
LCBO in its general store. You can buy cake at the store too!
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY GARBAGE? Look to sort your stash before you trash. If you could
take your garbage with you, thatd be great. Your empties go toward keeping R&S rolling.
HEY, ARE THOSE MOSQUITOES? Welcome to North Ontario! The witching hour comes just
as darkness falls. Prepare with some bug dope, long sleeves & pants. FYI Mosquitos like
dark colours and do not respect black tights. Light colours are best.
CAN I HOOT AND HOWL AT 3 A.M. IN THE FAMILY CAMPING ZONE? Please dont. Children
and parents need their sleep. Gentle strumming by the campfire only. The Beach is a good
place to let off steam by dancing it up with the late night bands.
BULLS EYE BITE? If you have a bulls-eye shaped bite or other strange rash from a bite
get it checked out at the Nurse Right Now station. Better yet, wear light coloured pants
tucked into socks and long sleeves with DEET bug repellent to protect from ticks and
other bugs. If bitten, never squeeze a tick, but pull out slowly near head with tweezers
(saving it for identification) or better yet get one of our medical people to do it. Slosh area
with rubbing alcohol.

Who Are We?

Were a grassroots not-for-profit arts organization that
now has seven festivals under our belt. We are member
driven relying on the relentless energy and diverse
talents of our member-volunteers (more than 100 this
year!) to make R&S happen. We are makers using
natural elements like clay, sand, wood, and straw found
here or recycled materials to build ovens, yurts, saunas
and t-shirts. We are presenters of emerging and postemerging music.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to become a leader, early adopter and innovator in presenting the Arts
Sustainably.

OUR MISSION

To present regional, national and international emerging indie, folk and roots music while
showcasing a community-based, simple and sustainable way of life.

PROMOTING REGIONAL/EMERGING MUSICIANS

Our second Development Campout for emerging regional musicians, made possible by
donations from A&M Remediation as well as SOCAN, took place the weekend before the
festival with Shotgun Jimmie and April Aliermo (Phdre & Hooded Fang) mentoring. This
session focused on helping young bands with their first gigs.
Youll also find bands at our Annual General Meeting, fundraisers like Bowling on the
River, Earth Day, and other unlikely events like cob ovens builds. Music makes us happy
and we want to bring it into all aspects of our work and play.

NATURAL BUILDING, UPCYCLING & OTHER SUSTAINABLE STUFF

This year we shored up some past projects repairing the cob ovens, building a deck and
improvements to our sauna, and sewing a cover for the yurt made from poles harvested
on site and skinned by many. Weve also built a walk-in refrigerator from a trailer donated
by A&M Remediation. Anywhere Space lent a hand in screening our upcycled t-shirts. And
big thanks to Northern Lights Festival Boreal who lent us dishes for our artist hospitality
area the first step in getting rid of disposable dishes at the festival.

Thanks a Bunch!
