Critical and polemical remarks

Summary
The paper contains a number of critical considerations and polemical remarks on
the contemporary research practice in making use of ethnographical analogies and
ethnological theories in prehistoric interpretations. The starting point of the discussion
on the matter is the situation in this respect in the Polish archaeological literature. The
Authors also call the readers attention to foreign considerations on the subject. The
basic assumption of the paper is a critical estimation of both an unreasoned approval
of the analogy method and an extreme scepticism prevalent in that range. The Authors
propose instead of both an attitude of critical optimism as to the possibility of using
in prehistoric studies the achievement of ethnology. According to the Authors opinion,
the first thing to be done in this respect is to elaborate methods of scientific cooperation
useful to all concerned.
The first part of the paper specifies the merits as well as the shortcomings of such a
cooperation with regard to the analysis of individual facts, and to the use of ethnological
conceptions and theories. Further considerations deal with the archaeological interpre
tation of ethnographical facts, the selection mostly erroneous of those facts, and
the shortcomings of the initial principles of their verification. The Authors call attention
to the basic differences between the ethnological and the prehistoric methods of reconstruc
tion of socio-cultural system, underlining the application principle of law of correlation
of artifacts (as material results of behaviours), with behaviours as such, in the studies on
the prehistorio communities.
Confronting the main shortcomings of the use in both archaeology and prehistory
of ethnographical ana ogies, the Authors present propositions aiming at correction of
the principles of their application. In the first stage of research, the most difficult thing
to achieve is undoubtedly the selection of the proper analogy variant. The best results
are obtained not by an arbitrary choice of the analogy, but by holding on to criteria of
selection which take in consideration the kind of mans natural and cultural environments
and the laws of correlation of certain phenomena, as it is well known that assemblages
of similar structure should be compared with each other. Another advisable way of

proceeding is the analysis of cultural traits singled out from one of more stages of de
velopment of the same cultural sequence, which is in fact a variant of the comparative
retrogresive method.
Further on the Authors introduce the differentiation of various kinds of analogies:
1) classification analogies, selected according to the principle of the concordance o f the
cultural type and the natural environment, 2) local analogies concerned with the elements
of assemblages originating from various stages of the same cultural sequence, and 3) uni
versal analogies, resulting for example from the essence of technological processes, the
uniformity of the human psyche, the biological determinants of cultural behaviours,
etc.
While turning towards the interpretative ethnological contex of applied analogies,
the danger becomes imminent of penetration into prehistory of outdated theories. The
context of ethnographical analogies is being usually interpreted according to some expli
cative ethnological concept. Should the latter happen to be erroneous or groundless, its
adoption for prehistoric reconstruction purposes must result in deformation of the achie
ved image of the past. Among the lasting elements of this interpretation are common
place axioms or scientific dogmas taken over rather uncritically from old authors, still
kept in high esteem owing to tradition. The considerable part of such misunderstan
dings result from the acceptance of outdated ethnological concepts. This concerns first
o f all the influence of the evolutionism, of the theory of our living ancestors , of the
social and ethnic classification of archaeological materials, and of the theories of primi
tive form of religion.
In the later parts of the paper the Authors show on examples the typical ways of
obvious abuse of the method of ethnographical analogies. They pointed out that analogies
selected in an unjustified way used sometimes as illustrations or pieces of camouflage,
meant to increase the truthfulness of some considerations. According to the Authors
opinion, the remedy against this consists in endeavours to achieve a higher quality level
of background knowledge, assisted by the interdisciplinary cooperation, the exchange
o f research experiences, and the factual consultations.
However, it should be well kept in mind that convergencies of formal features are
not always accompanied by convergencies of their contexts, which happens to be admit
ted on the quiet by many specialists. Such a correlation is frequent, but many other
combinations also may happen. Therefore the stipulation is indispensable, though fre
quently forgotten in practice, that the rich comparative (ethnographical) material can
but supply the assemblage of variants making possible the choice of one of the admissible
alternatives of reconstruction. Those data can by no means decide on the fitness of an
unique and only interpretation. This confirms the absolute necessity of the verification
o f all the obtained alternative solutions on the grounds of their definitive confrontation
with the archaeological material and its prehistoric interpretation. Such a confrontation
affords the possibility to select the most probable variant and to formulate on these
grounds a proper archaeological hypothesis. Thus, while making use of ethnographical
data, we are bound to effect a double verification of the analogies first in the course
of their initial selection, on the bases of the assumptions of modern ethnology, and once
more, while reconstructing the prehistoric culture using archaeological criteria.
The interchange of opinions and experiences concerned with the methods of appli
cation of ethnographical analogies and with the use of ethnological assumptions is in
dispensable. Such considerations should reinforce their concrete character, making the
discussion more comprehensive and presenting the merits and shortcomings of the
method under consideration in various research situations. On the other hand, the range
of the discussion must be extended to permit an estimation of the value of conclusion
per analogiam ethnographioam on the grounds of the general principles of the compara
tive methods, the methodological rules of anthropological investigations and the logical
theory of the science.
