Masters Degree Research Projects

The University of Auckland has a requirement for formal assessment and review of Masters
Research projects. This involves a preliminary assessment of the research proposal as well
as a mid-year review of progress.

To administer this academic requirement a Masters degree Advisory Committee (MAC) has
been established with HoD nominated representatives from SMS, SOM and Liggins Institute.
The MAC will meet twice a year to review new project proposals and to assess mid-year
progress reports for approval by the relevant head of department.
All Masters research supervisors are required to ensure that (a) an initial an outline of the
project has been prepared with the student prior to the start of the project; and (b) that a midyear review is completed.
The deadlines are the last Friday one calendar month prior to the start of each
semester.
Head of department responsibility will continue to include:
Individual student advice
Point of contact for dealing with supervisory problems
Administering and managing the examination process

PROJECT PROPOSAL FORM

Approval of Research Topics
All proposals for Masters research topics must be formally considered and approved by the
appropriate Departmental committee or postgraduate co-ordinator.

This form is to be submitted before the last Friday one calendar month prior to
the start of each semester.

This form should be completed in consultation with your potential supervisor.

The proposal is to be signed as indicated at the end of the form.
Text must be 12 point.
The form should be submitted to the SMS secretary (Virginia Moraes) for consideration by the
Masters Advisory Committee as part of the enrolment procedure
The Masters Advisory Committee will make a recommendation to the appropriate Head of
Department/Academic Director.
