Food is a key indicator of changing lifestyles and the current

trends driving innovation in developed economies are
convenience and health-consciousness, resulting in significant
changes on supermarket shelves. The share of flexible food
packaging takes up 77% of the total packaging market,
amounting to an incredible 7,899 million in 2008*. One of the
most dynamic sub-segments with a growth rate of 6 % in 2008
was fresh fruit and vegetables, reflecting the fact that health
considerations such as the retention of vitamins and minerals
have become increasingly important.
Mondi Consumer Bags & Films offers a broad range of packaging
solutions for these end-use segments, backed by in-depth
technical know-how and leading-edge research and
production systems. To stay abreast of developments, and
to provide packaging that optimally protects and promotes

food products, a dedicated R&D Centre was set up. The R&D
Centres approach is to team up with customers and equipment
producers at an early stage of product development to design
innovative solutions that often pre-empt market needs.
Mondi Consumer Bags & Films product portfolio covers the full
range of films and flexible packaging solutions starting from
film extrusion to printing up to the converting of innovative and
convenient pre-made packaging. The packaging solutions for
the food market range from high-quality extruded films, barrier
materials and printed laminates to converted packaging such
as pouches, plastic bags, microwaveable packaging and
reclosable bags. These are always offered with a variety of
features with regards to barrier properties, sustainability, and
professional printing and end-user functionalities like handles,
easy opening and reclosing.

Mondi Consumer Bags & Films produces a broad range

of films, laminates and barrier materials, such as mono-,
duplex-, triplex or multilayer films, whereby the material
combination is customised to the specific requirements.
Special solutions such as sustainable packaging, cold seal
application, double-sided printing as well as laminates for
sterilisation and vacuum packaging are part of our standard
product portfolio.

As fully integrated packaging supplier, we convert our highquality laminates and barrier films in-house into a broad range
of flexible packaging solutions, such as pouches, plastic
bags, microwaveable packaging, and reclosable bags.

Printed laminates

Laminates are available in all material combinations with highclass printing for optimal shelf appeal of your products. The
main material substrates used are PET, PE, OPP, CPP, OPA,
paper as well as aluminium and metallised films. Depending
on the requirements of the product, the laminates are offered
with enhanced barrier properties by adding materials such as
SiOx and EVOH.
Our printed laminates can be used for all horizontal and
vertical FFS applications as
well as for flow wrapping or
lidding. In addition, they
can be processed into
customised converted
packaging solutions.

Sensitive food products require complex barrier properties
to ensure longer shelf-life, excellent aroma and attractive

appearance. Our high-quality barrier materials contain special

additives such as metallocenes or ionomers in order to optimise seal strength and puncture resistance, hot tack and also
the optics of the materials. Thus, the packaged goods are
optimally protected from contamination or damage caused
for instance by sharp edges, spice granules or sterilisation.
Our films for thermoforming application are called Styria
Therm (top film with up to 5 layers) and Styria Form (bottom
film with up to 10 layers). The bottom film has extraordinary
thermoforming properties which result in an eco-friendly, thin
and even film with high rest thickness in the corner. Our barrier
materials are used for applications

Sustainable development is an integral part of Mondis philosophy. Sustainex is a unique family of innovative biodegradable and compostable products. It is available as blown film
for Form-Fill-and-Seal (FFS) applications as well as converted
consumer packaging. All Sustainex materials are approved
for direct food contact and therefore
are a suitable packaging solution
for a wide range of applications

Pouches versatile & clever

Our pre-made stand-up pouches are convenient and userfriendly packaging solutions offering virtually unlimited possibilities: they are made of printed high-performance laminates
and barrier materials and are very flexible with regard to the
laminate used. The pouch is customisable, e.g. rounded edges
for better handling and greater stability or various shapes. We
have developed a wide range of add-on features to enhance
end-user convenience, including tear notches, punch holes,
laser perforation and reclosable opening.

Zip&Valve pouch
The new Zip&Valve pouch offers an attractive combination
of properties: a long shelf-life and reclosability, without loss
of vitamins and flavour. The principle of the new pouch is
astonishingly easy: simply add fluid and seasoning to the
Zip&Valve stand-up pouch, then close the zipper and place
it in the microwave. Depending on the product inside, a fresh
made nutritious meal is ready in only a few minutes time.
The consistent overpressure can be predefined and adjusted
according to your needs by altering
the number and size of steam
valves on the pouch.

Our plastic bags can be produced in all kind of material

combinations and in several sizes and shapes. High-quality
barrier materials ensure good product protection and long
shelf-life whereas professional printing guarantees appealing
appearance at the point of sale. Laminates in various material
combinations - depending on the required packaging properties - are used to achieve the optimal packaging solution.

Wicketed Bags
Wicketed Bags are extruded, printed and converted inhouse, offering our customers the highest level of support
and flexibility. These bags are typically used for high-speed
loading applications like for instance the packaging of toast,
cut bread or deep frozen chicken. The bags are available as
polyethylene and polypropylene bags for deep freeze and
standard applications.

Our NeoSteam packaging range features an adaptable

steam valve which allows to steam chilled and frozen ready
meals, vegetables, pasta, rice, fish, etc., directly in the microwave. The traditional puncturing or opening of the packed
ready meal is no longer necessary, which shortens preparation
time and ensures that the product remains moist. Thanks to
our special valve technology, the product is cooked under
pressure, which preserves flavour, precious minerals and
vitamins.
The flexible micro-perforated steam valve can be customised
with regard to position, shape, and size to ensure the best
cooking result. In addition, the NeoSteam material is very
versatile and can be converted into pouches or bags (FFS
bags) or used as lidding film for trays.

hygienic and reliable packaging.
These bags can be opened and
reclosed as often as desired without the need of scissors,
knives or cellotape. We offer a variety of features such as
zippers, sliders and handles. Our reclosable bags are known

to create a reliable and safe laser solution. Tiny perforations,
invisible to the naked eye, enhance the properties of standup pouches, plastic bags, and lidded trays for convenience

of food. We have all the necessary know-how and specialised
equipment for such applications.

hooded top slider for our reclosable bags. A special high
burst slider track offers better content security whilst
enabling an easy dosing and emptying of the bags content.
The new closure technology ensures utmost hygienics and

SwiftUp is our latest product innovation for superior convenience. The innovative and
convenient easy opening concept upvalues all your product packaging and offers the
utmost ease of handling. SwiftUp requires low force and no additional tools to open
your product. The fin seal of the packaging opens in a straight line across the packaging
and functions as a secure, reclosable flap after opening. The controlled, straight opening
makes the dispensing and sharing of content extremely easy. The reclosable feature
ensures that the contents stay fresh and nutritious even after opening.

Ongoing innovation
At Mondi Consumer Bags & Films, every success story is the
preface to the next: Our R&D Centre is already working on
tomorrows packaging for even more convenient and eco-

nomical packaging, and constantly endeavours to pre-empt

market trends and producers requirements.
The centre houses two laboratories and pilot production lines
and was built with an investment of more than EUR 5.0 million.
Our goal is to develop innovative new flexible packaging
solutions and to optimise existing products by analysing
their individual components and features. R&D teams check
the runability and enhance barrier properties of materials
developed under near industrial conditions. The state-of-the
art equipment of both the analytical and the applications lab
is also used for quality assurance and claim processing for
the groups production plants. From the outset, all materials
comply with relevant regulations such as food safety and
environmental legislation.
