USE OF FIVE ELEMENT ACUPUNCTURE IN THE
TREATMENT OF POSSESSION: AN ANCIENT CONCEPT
APPLIED TO THE MODERN WORLD
Robert J. Abramson has been a student of J.R. Worsleys and a practitioner of
Five Element acupuncture for more than 20 years. He is the codirector of the
Five Element Group of New York and has taught and lectured extensively on
Five Element acupuncture.
Many people see acupuncture as a physical modality limited to treating
physical entities such as pain syndromes. Although this is true, it is a
restricted view. Others understand that in addition to treating physical
problems, acupuncture is helpful for treating mental problems (e.g. insomnia,
anxiety, panic attacks). Still others are aware that acupuncture has a profound
effect on the spirit. In fact, most difficulties we face in the modern era
depression, lack of will to live, lack of joyhave their origin on the spiritual
level. Such spiritual maladies ca be and, in fact, must beaddressed with
acupuncture for real healing to occur (oral communication, J.R. Worsley, April
1979).
An overwhelming number of our problems today stem from a weak, deficient,
and uncared-for spirit. Although our culture provides well for physical and
mental needs, too often the spirit goes hungry. According to classical Five
Element acupuncture as taught by J.R. Worsley, most imbalances arise out of
this deficiency. IF left untreated, they can give way to more recognizable
disease processes. For true and lasting healing to occur, a practitioner must
set free and nourish the patients spirit, thereby allowing it to guide the
person back to balance and health.

THE CONCEPT OF POSSESSION

A weakened and ineffectual spirit that is not able to guide and give direction
to a patient, coupled with powerful external or internal forces, can cause loss
of control over the body, mind, and spirit. This loss of control, this transfer of
power from the person to this other entitythis taking overis what Five
Element acupuncture calls "possession". Other healing traditions acknowledge
this idea of the patient being taken over by another force while in a weakened

state and have different treatments to restore proper order. The ideas of
demons, possession, and loss of free will are an intricate part of many
religions throughout the world. The Catholic church has been quietly
encouraging bishops to appoint more exorcists as the millennium approaches.
This increased need for exorcism is a consequence of social and cultural
dislocation, the erosion of traditional religion, and the rise of sects and cults
dealing in spiritism. "Yes, I believe the Devil exists", noted one priest in a New
York Times article last year, "but not in the way he is popularly presented. The
evil spirit exists in peoples hearts; it slips through the minds fault lines. It
destroys trust, causes despair, prevents people from loving, from living a full
life. Its not a matter of rolling on the ground and crying".
Other religious traditions contain similar ideas. In Judaism there is the idea of
a dybbuk or evil spirit. Isaac Bashevis Singer says of demons: "I dont think
they can take us over so quickly. When people say to themselves, 'Im not
going to make any choice anymore. It is then that the demon is bound to
appear".
The concept of possession and its treatment as taught by J.R. Worsley has
become deeply imbedded in the way Five Element acupuncturists
conceptualize their patients. The hallmark of possession is that the person is
not in control of his or her lifesomething or someone has assumed an
inordinate and overpowering control. One might be possessed by money, a
job, sex, a guru figure, a religion, a lover, and even negative thought patterns.
Virtually anything can possess people to the point that it takes away their
freedom. Of course, patients who present with obsessional thoughts are not
all possessed. There is a clear distinctionat times profound and at times
subtlebetween those patients with obsessional, neurotic, and even
psychotic thought and behavioral patterns and those who are possessed from
the Five Element point of view. Regardless of ones worldview concerning
predestination, we all tend to act as though we are free in body, mind, and
spirit to make decisions that affect our lives. However, when patients become
possessed they lose that basic ability. Something or someone usurps their
power to control their lives. In J.R. Worsleys classical Five Element
acupuncture, specific needle treatment patterns unleash the 7Internal
Dragons that scour the body and devour the Internal Devils that are
responsible for the possession. When assessing a patient for possession, the
practitioner should listen to the patients story as well as how he or she tells
it. One must also look into the patients eyes to determine whether a full,
complete human being seems to be looking back. The look of someone who is

possessed is a vacant and absent stare. Its a bit like looking into the eyes of a
dollas though something is missing in the person. That something is a
connection to their spirit. The subtle quality of a connection or lack thereof
between practitioner and patient, the look in the patients eyes, the patients
inability to move forward with his or her life, and the context of the patients
story all can help the practitioner to arrive at a diagnosis and institute proper
treatment.
If the patient being treated for possession is not actually possessed, nothing
happens.
The
practitioner does no harm and eliminates possession as a possible cause of
the
patients
problems. The patients in the following case reports were all treated for
possession. The needling pattern for these treatments can be found in J.R.
Worsleys Traditional Chinese Acupuncture. It is important to bear in mind that
this treatment must be seen in the context of a Five Element diagnosis and
continued treatment on the causative factor Element. Causative factor is a
concept specific to the Five Element system and denotes the primary
elemental imbalance. Practitioners who have a strong sense that their patient
is possessed can refer the patient to a Five Element practitioner or use
another modality to deal with the possession. From a Five Element
perspective, however, the possession must be cleared or future treatments
will not work and the patient will not be able to move forward with his or her
life.

Case 1
Emma, a 41-year-old, extremely high-functioning woman, got involved with a
man, fell in love, and was swindled out of a large sum of money. She became
obsessed with this man as well as her mistake and could not get them out of
her mind. These thoughts dominated her daily life. It was as though she was
possessed by her action and could not regain control of her life.
She was referred by a psychotherapist who felt something was needed to
break through the obsessive thoughts, allowing the patient to regain control. I
treated her for Internal Devils. Her sleep was restored and the obsessive and
possessed feelings that ruled her life left her. She was now able to deal with
the psychological issues that allowed her to get into such a situation in the
first place. In the following section, Emmas therapist describes the

background leading up to Emmas referral to my practice: Emma is an

extremely successful single parent. In 1996 her son received a full scholarship
to an Ivy League university and her daughter received a scholarship to a
prestigious prep school. Suddenly both children were out of the house and
Emma, who hadnt been on a date in approximately 12 years, began a
relationship with a retired baseball player. He was charismatic and playful, but
an alcoholic. Emma knew this was not going to develop into a lifelong
partnership, but was nevertheless enjoying herself. In spring 1998 Emmas
friend and lover decided to go back to his former girlfriend. Emma had given
the man a large sum of money, with which he had absconded. Emma was
devastated. My work with Emma involved helping her to manage and grieve
the loss. After a month of treatment, nothing had changed with her. She was
suffering from depression and anxiety and was unable to concentrate at work
or make herself available to her children when they came home for a visit. I
referred her to a psychiatrist and she began taking both Prozac (fluoxetine
hydrochloride) and BuSpar (buspirone hydrochloride). Around the same time I
began treating her for trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. The
treatment included traditional cognitive, cognitive-behavioral, insight-oriented
therapies as well as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing
techniques. After several months of psychiatric and psychological treatment,
Emma found no relief from her obsession with her lover or the pain associated
with his betrayal of her. She was not functioning and we spoke about
hospitalization. At this point I referred her to Dr. Abramson for acupuncture
treatments in the hope of avoiding hospitalization.
After the first session Emma reported that she was thinking more clearly and
that she could conceive of the possibility of "getting on with her life". She
arranged outings with friends and understood that she had to break her ties to
the family and friends of her former lover. Only one additional acupuncture
treatment remained, and within a month following the initial treatment Emma
began to stabilize. During the summer of 1998 she was working effectively at
her job. She began to take trips and spent satisfying time with her children. In
September she began dating a man she knew when she was a young woman.
The relationship appears to be healthy and Emma is reportedly doing will
(written communication, James Halpern, PhD, November 1998).

Case 2

A 35-year-old woman receiving treatments from an acupuncturist had begun

to feel poorly over the previous 6 to 8 months before she came to see me.
Jane appeared to have an ideal life: she had 3 wonderful children a loving
husband, and financial security. She was also intelligent, physically attractive,
and generally healthy. As our interview and physical examination proceeded,
however, the sense that something was wrong became increasingly strong. I
felt I could not engage this patient and could not find the person behind the
faade. Following some gentle questioning, Jane revealed that she had just
remodeled parts of her house, noting the experience had been "toxic" and
that she felt "poisoned" by it. I thought perhaps that environmental pollutants
were making her sick, but with further probing Jane opened up with a flood of
tears and emotion. The builder with whom she had been working closelya
man who had befriended her and became her confidantwas exerting
increasing control over her life. Jane had become dependent on him to a very
unhealthy degree. She had slowly lost control of her life and was being
manipulated by this person. Jane could feel that something was wrong but
could not extricate herself from the morass. Finally, it came to light that the
builder was grossly overcharging her and she broke off the relationship. She
then
had a very disturbing and graphic daydream in which she imagined him as the
devil. Since that time Jane had not felt right: her sleep was off, she was
lethargic, everything was a great effort, there was no joy in her life, and, as
she said, "It was a dark cloud over me." The combination of how I perceived
Jane and how I perceived her story led me to treat her for possession using
the Internal Devils treatment. After the first visit there was a dramatic change.
She almost immediately felt a sense of relief and of being back in control. This
did not mean that her energy returned immediately or that all of her issues
evaporated, but the treatment seemed to allow her to begin the healing
process and to make some sense of what had happened as well as why she
felt so poorly. At this writing I have seen Jane 5 addition times. She is doing
well, her joy is back, she is energetic again, and she is present and engaging
in conversation.
Case 3
A 40-year-old man with a long-standing history of depression told the story of
how his older brother had been very depressed and committed suicide as a
teenager. Jeffrey was 18 years old at the time and it became the defining
moment in his life. He became depressed himself and was obsessed with the
idea that he should have been able to prevent his brothers suicide. Of course,

this sentiment was irrational, but it exerted an overwhelming force over the
patient. I treated him for Internal Devils, which had a very positive effect.
Although the treatment did not magically eliminate Jeffreys depression, it
allowed him to focus on his own life and problems and to begin moving
forward with his treatment, which involved antidepressants and acupuncture.

CONCLUSION
These clinical examples illustrate the hallmark of possessionthat something
or someone is controlling another persons life. Clearing away this kind of
possession is a necessary starting point in Five Element acupuncture. My hope
is that these case reports will expand the scope of how we view our patients
and acupuncture in general, giving practitioners another treatment protocol in
their clinical armamentarium. One cannot work effectively with the Elemental
causative factor and bring balance and harmony to a persons body, mind,
and spirit when that person is being controlled by a foreign influence. Once
cleared, the person can begin to move forward, allowing various treatments
that may not have been successful previously to work the way they were
originally intended.

The Seven Dragons

Possession; One of the earliest styles of medical practice in Neolithic societies
is what we would today call shamanism. This practice has continues to this
day and it was from these shamanist arts that Chinese Medicine, as we know
it today grew.
In most ancient cultures possession was described as someone who was
partially or fully taken over by an outside spirit or Gui. Since the cultural
cleansing of China in the late 50s all notions of spirits have been purged from
Chinese Medicine.
Some of the things that can increase someone's vulnerability to possession
are physical shocks or accidents, drug or alcohol use, engaging with the
occult, opening themselves up to others, sexual abuse, or exposure to
extreme climatic factors.
What does possession look like? It is a sense that you can not reach the
person that some part of them is not available. You may look into their eyes
and they are not really there. It is like there is a veil over their eyes and you
not reach them. The person may hear voices, have extreme dreams, actually
say they feel possessed. The pulses are "unusual" and they may exhibit
abnormal speech, thoughts or eye movement patterns.
The Seven Dragons are Ren 15M (the master point a teardrop below Ren 15)
St25, St32 and St41
These 7 points are inserted left side then right in the order above. They are
inserted deeply, to really engage with the Qi of the person, then given a hint
of sedation. The needles have the look that they are "at attention" in the
body.
They are retained or left in until there is a noticeable difference in the person
the persons eyes or their pulses.
This difference is hard to describe until you have experienced it but you know
you have the person 'back in the room' with you. You may occasionally need
to repeat this treatment again as you move through layers of the possession.
In today's world we want to consider Possession as a block to treatment.
If someone is possessed - acupuncture treatment will not work!
In some styles of Chinese medicine the use of the 13 ghost points is used and
can be useful for people with psychiatric conditions.
In Classical 5 Element Acupuncture we use a treatment called the 7 Dragons.
This is a set of 7 points that are set in a pattern that reconnect the patient to

themselves. It is like the seven beneficial dragons that patrol around the body
and expel the demons that have taken up residence.

Five-Phases Acupuncture
The Gui or Demons
1. General Overview
0. Introduction
Demons are energetic entities mentioned in Ancient Chinese texts. They are
forces of severe imbalances. Possessions are found throughout Chinese
classical literature. Most great doctors at least mentioned them. Some gave
prescriptions for it, some denied it. The history of Chinese demonology
resembles that of Western countries. Throughout times, specialists existed
and throughout time cases have been reported. Acupuncture is not the major
branch that apparently deals with possessions but the Five Elements Style of
the Worsley tradition does have a protocol to deal with Entities. Its origin is
not known but it is accepted by the practitioners of the school. The notion of
entity is not clearly defined, and this techniques always evokes some sort of
mystery and awe among its practitioners.
According to the observations of Worsley and of practitioners of that style, the
number of possessions is growing (as well as for Aggressive Energy and
Husband/Wife) because the mental defenses are polluted and the spiritual
defenses are weakened.
Going back to some of the texts brings some interesting notes about the
predisposing factors leading to possessions. The opinions that accept the
Demons or those that view Demons as construction of an ill person have both
in common that the person suffers from a loss of the Spirit Essences and/or
Blood. Chang Chieh Pin comments that when someone falls ill from a
depletion in the liver and then encounters a seasonally insufficient
development of ceasing-yin influences, he is attacked by the white corpsedemons. When a person falls ill from a depletion in the heart and then
encounters an insufficient development of the two fire-influences in the
seasonal progression, he is attacked by black corpse-demons. . . According
to him, there are five types of demons and his description reminds the Ko
cycle propagation. Hsu Ling Tai explains that Demons and spirits are evil
similar to Wind, Cold, Summer Heat, and Dampness. Whenever there is a
depletion of defensive influences, [the body] then absorbs demons. The
[human] spirit, of course, belongs to the yang category. When the yang
[influences] have been depleted, demons take control of them .. Therefore,
in treating [an injury caused by] demons, one need only strengthen the spirit
[of the victim]. Since fluid, rumination, or fear can also cause [depletion of
the spirit] in such cases, one must first investigate such a possibility before
undertaking any therapy. Besides the predisposing factors leading to a loss of
Spirit, of Yang, there are also illnesses caused by direct attack from demons
and alien spirits.
In simple terms, the Gui is some force that has taken grip of some part of the
person at some level.

Apparently, a deficiency of Spirit, Yang will lead to predisposition of

possession.
Five classes of Demons will use the Ko cycle to invade the human being.
Could this be in correlation with the Notion of Aggressive Energy? Chang
Chieh Pin cite Directions for Restoring Losses by Means of Acupuncture. This
text is not available in English.
What appears certain is that possessed people cannot be reached, because
another force is controlling them and that cases of possessions can go from
total madness (rare) to very subtle and discrete types.
In the Five Elements Worsley tradition, Gui are viewed as energy blocks,
whereby the person is unable to use a vast amount of Energy. Practitioners of
that school denominate it Internal and External Demons or ID and ED. Other
important blocks are innocently called, such as Husband/Wife to prevent the
patient to know about the severity of the condition. The term Gui may be
more cautious and appropriate to use for the same reasons.
In the same traditions, most of the current cases are about Internal Gui, while
they used to be more External in the past.
Sometimes the Demons eat the Dragons.
The Dragons only come out when there is work to do.
Possession totally prevent going to the CF.
Both Internal and External Possession can happen at the same time.
Both can be created by Spirits, drugs or alcohol.
2. Five Elements Treatment
ID and ED
1. Symptomatology
According to Worsley, Possession cannot be seen with the physical or mental
eyes. Only the spiritual eyes can uncover it. Until the spiritual eyes are
developed, the practitioner needs to base the diagnostic on other tools. The
person is unreachable, even if she/he seems intelligent. Once you go
beneath, you can reach what is happening ...
IDs are from within. EDs are from without.
a. Observations:
Shen disturbance; Eyes (vacant, wild, lack of contact, looking through you).
Emotional events.
Evidence of an extreme emotional disturbance of some sort.

Reality as a being, generated by belief systems (could be from early
childhood; parental conditioning; terror; trauma; cults).
History of suicide attempt, destructive behaviors (self mutilation).
Clear demarcation in time: I was fine until ...
b. Patient "alarm" sentences:

I was fine until ...

I feel possessed by ...

I feel I am in the devil's grip
c. Pulse:
Chaotic.
d. Treatments reactions:
No results from earlier treatments.. Stockiness.
e. Others
The practitioner may have dreams of Entities after seeing a specific patient.
2. Therapist's approach
If there is any reason to believe in the presence of Gui, the treatment must
be done.
While doing this kind of treatment, tell the patient you are doing a clearing.
The treatment process may be lengthy (sometimes hours), and unpredictable
results could come out while patient is on the table. The therapist must be
prepared to this (scheduling, being ready for the unexpected, ...).
There are conditions were the patient is not ready for this treatment, because

3. Distinguishing between Demons

3.1 Demons According to Five Elements Style
As mentioned above, in Five Elements Style, there are two types of
possessions, the Internal Demon (or Devil) and the External Demon (or Devil)
types.
Do not worry over the difference, just get the diagnostic of possession. JR.
Worsley
Maybe you might think about it after a few treatments if movement does not
occur.
In this case, review what might go on. Is it H/W, AE, RN/DU or even a block at
the Wei level.
A green acupuncturist generally founds Possessions by trial and error.
Both can be treated within the same session, if necessary, and if person is
strong enough.

Internal Gui are done first (note that things go from inside to outside; in AEs,
the Yang-Fu are drained through the Yin-Zhang, according to JR. Worsley and J.
Measures).
Both present the followings:
Shen disturbance: Both are reflected in the eyes.
Clear time demarcation
Both can be generated through a sudden onset.
Careful questioning/observations are necessary.
Added to these common characteristics, we have:
Generally, the ID (Internal Demon) is generated from inside forces.
Generally, the ED (External Demon) is generated from outside forces:
It relates to environmental factors, generally.
The invasion is grave, much more serious than a pernicious influence.
Exposition to drastic changes of weather or extreme climates.
External trauma (an outside force disturbing deep level functions), such
as injuries, accidents
Chronic, long lasting conditions.
There may not be a clear cut distinction and sometimes both ID and ED
treatments may be necessary.

4. Treatment
The points used release the Seven Dragons, which devour the Seven
Demons.
This treatment differs radically from Five Elements Style.
The ID treatment does not influence Stomach at all (it is not an Earth
treatment), even though six points are on it.
A person has to be initially vulnerable to become possessed. To remove
possession while he/she is vulnerable necessitates an immediate follow-up. It
is a good idea to do sources points on the CF to ground the treatment (after
testing for AE), except if the patient has undergone strong reaction. In the
later case bring the patient back in the next day.
. Procedure
Length: 1 to 12 hour for the first ten years of practice.
Mark points (the chance to get them is near zero).
It is like a combination to a safe, either you get the combination or you don't.
First insert all the needles straight with no manipulation, then in the same
order, disperse (counter clock rotation of 180 degrees).
After inserting all needles, do a sedation for about 10-15 min., than check
Color- Sound- Odor - Emotion, pulses and patient.
If no change tonify, starting at Master Point, do the following:
a Pull needle, feel for grip.
b If needle comes straight out, the point has been missed.
c Go in until the grip is felt and remark. Do b and c for each point.
d Start all over with new locations.
e If no change, tonify and wait for change, about 3-4 min.
As soon as a change is noticed, stop. If no change do E.D.
In total, a Possession treatment may involve four separate procedures:
Dispersion of Ids.
Tonification of IDs.
Dispersion of Eds.
Tonification of EDs.
. Note on Needle techniques
Disperse from Right to Left and Tonify from Left to Right.
Tonification on right side, disperse on left side.
At a certain level, only needle unilaterally, tonifying only Left and dispersing
only Right.
At Master level, only one side is being worked.
5. Observation
During this treatment, there is aggravation of the patient's condition, then
the patient feels reborn, even if he/she cannot express it.
The patient may go through unusual things (gestures, speech, ...), then it will
be over and he/she will be free.
Do not do anything except staying with the patient during the treatment.

You may actually see a force leaving the body but rarely. Leave a window
open, or you can get/feel sick. You won't become possessed.
If successful, a person who would have been sick all their life is cured.
It is the safest and cleanest method. It is 100% effective.
Do not tonify first, to tonify a possessed patient who need sedation will create
a big problem.

7. Warning
The Entity from Gui treatment can enter the practitioner.
A practitioner did a Gui treatment, had two dreams of being attacked by the
same Entity, once in the patients room (where the ID treatment was done)
and the second time in his own bedroom. After the second dream, he felt an
energetic change with a strange sensation in the inside of the upper back.
The entity had actually entered at the level of BL-11.
3. Sun Si Miao Treatment
The Thirteen Gui Points
Sun Si Miao (581-682 AD), a prominent physician of the Tang Dynasty, wrote
the Qian Jin Yao Fang (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold, 652 AD) and Qian
Jin Yi Fang (Supplement to Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold, 682 AD).
These books have been considered as an agglomeration of the medical
achievements before the seventh century. Each work is composed of 30
volumes covering all branches of medicine. The first work includes a peculiar
treatment called Shi San Gui Xu Ge or Ode to Thirteen Ghost Acupoints where
Sun Si Miao describes, in the form of an poetic and humorous style.
These points are to be used together in the same treatment, each one with a
specific technique.

As much as no real indication is known in English about this treatment, it is

supposed to be for disorders caused by ghosts or mental disorders. Demons
have been treated throughout Chinese medicine with herbs and incantation
and Sun Si Miaos text is probably the first known text mentioning
acupuncture as a therapeutic modality. The possibility that acupuncture
originally had purely demonic medicine functions should not be excluded.[2]
The individual points from this prescription have specific energetic functions
ranging from calming and clearing the mind and dispelling exogenous
pathogens to regulate Qi and Blood.

Internal Dragons
All points are on Yang Ming, which is the master of the Madness of the
meridians. This madness is an abnormal movement of the energy in the
meridians. Therefore, we must reestablish the normal movement in the
yang ming (which is the Movement of Energy): 3 yang points
It is about tuning the internal movement. We must then command it with
the Heater. Since Yang Ming is involved, we must then act through the
contraries: Shao Yin.
Since it is about a deep disorder, we must use the Triple Heater. We helped
the Yang Ming movement. We must then help the Shao Yin movement,
through RN: RN 15, which commands the movement towards the Top.
External Dragons
For the External Dragons, the thought process is exactly symmetrical: it is
about a deep disorder: the root of man is involved; it is thus about Shao Yin.
We must make the madness exit, thus from inside to outside. But the
outside of Shao Yin is not Yang Ming. It is Tai Yang: all the points are on Tai
Yang. And DU 20 is the highest Yang of Tai Yang and of Du Mai.
And we note that these formula are established by FIVE points: this is
because the disorder that must be treated is a movement of the emotions: we
must then go through the 5 Movements.
