CAVLP Heritage Launch

An 18th century historic re-enactment survey by local mapping hero MajorGeneral William Roy launched Mapping the Past, a project exploring the
archaeology and heritage of the Clyde and Avon valleys in July.
Led by the new CAVLP Heritage team, managed by Northlight Heritage, the
project will record and share peoples ideas about what contributes to local
landscape character, sense of place and cultural identity, over the next year.
Place-name and map based research, map-making workshops and creation of
heritage routes and exhibitions will celebrate the areas rich mapping heritage
and connection to Roy the first person to map Scotland.

Clyde Valley orchard achievements

The orchards are an iconic feature of the local area which the Clyde
Valley Orchard Co-operative Ltd, in association with the Rural
Development Trust and CAVLP, have been working to secure a
sustainable future for.

Fruit day rolls around

again

The Co-operative have only recently converted to a social enterprise,

having been enabled to sell Clyde Valley Apple Juice through the
purchase of a pasteuriser. Last year alone, the group picked 750kg of
local apples which they pressed into 350 litres of juice the profits of
which were fed back into sustaining the orchards.

Dont miss the annual Fruit Day

and Farmers Market
celebrations at Overton Farm
on Saturday 3 October.

607 new fruit trees have been planted, 14 orchards have benefitted from
management plans, 207 individuals have been trained in orchard
management skills such as pruning and grafting and one community
orchard has been reinstated at Kirkfieldbank.

Expect delicious local produce

and a variety of activities.

Local schools have also been supported in planting and maintaining their
own mini orchards through a project with Central Scotland Green
Network Trust.

The CAVLP team will be there

make sure you say hello and
find out about projects and
volunteering opportunities!

Once in decline, its great to see the Clyde Valley orchards taking root
once again! Find out more at Fruit Day (see left), where you will be able
to sample fresh Clyde Valley Orchards juice.

Free environmental training sessions

168 environmental training and volunteering sessions have been
scheduled to take place throughout the Clyde and Avon valleys between
2015 2016, by Clydesdale Community Initiatives (CCI).
Following the outstanding success of the previous training programme,
CCI have been awarded 45,000 by Scottish Governments People and
Communities Fund, and will offer a variety of opportunities from path
building to invasive species removal.

Creepy crawly
goings on in Carluke
Bugs, butterflies and beasties
are the topic of The Young
Gallery Citizen Science
exhibition at the Cadzow
Gallery, Chatelherault Country
Park, from 15 21 August.
270 Carluke based primary
pupils took to local parks and
woodlands to investigate
wildlife with South Lanarkshire
Council Ranger Service, before
creating larger than life
sculptures inspired by their
findings with Impact Arts.

The free sessions are open to local communities and take place on sites
owned or managed by CAVLP partners so its a great way to get out and
about. Sites include Scottish Wildlife Trust Falls of Clyde, New Lanark,
South Lanarkshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council, RSPB Barons
Haugh and Scottish Natural Heritage Clyde Valley Woodlands National
Nature Reserve.
Were thrilled to announce another round of environmental and
conservation volunteering projects, especially following the success of
last years evaluation, says Kirsten Robb, CAVLP Development Officer.
The sessions will give individuals the skills and confidence in
contributing to future community projects.
A selection of opportunities are highlighted on the back of this
newsletter. For full listings, visit www.clydeandavonvalleys.org/events
