Backstops
This crane is equipped with mechanical type back
stops. Refer to Figure 4-1. The backstops are con
nected to the upper frame and the boom or the live
mast. The backstops are used to limit the movement of
the boom or live mast at minimum radius. The back
stops have telescoping ends that extend and retract to
allow for adequate movement of the boom or live mast.

Boom Inspection
Inspect the boom periodically to make sure it has not
been damaged. If a boom or jib section has been
damaged, it must be repaired or replaced before the
boom is used. Damaged lattice can be replaced.
Consult Distributor for information on lattice
replacement.

Safety Instructions
The following points must be observed while
performing any boom assembly or disassembly:
1. Read and understand the instructions outlined in
this Operator's Manual before attempting to as
semble or disassemble the boom.
2. Do not stand inside, on top, or under the boom at
anytime while assembling or disassembling the
boom. Refer to Figure 4-11.
3. Do not climb, stand, or walk on the boom. Use a
ladder or similar device to reach necessary areas.
4. When removing or installing the boom section
connecting pins, drive the pins from the outside of
the boom toward the inside.

Boom Self Assembly
Before beginning the boom self assembly procedure, refer to the Liftoff Capabilities" chart found in the Crane Rat
ing Manual. The live mast can be rigged as a boom to perform all the lifting procedures required to assemble the
boom. Refer to Using The Live Mast As A Boom" found earlier in this Section of the Operator's Manual for the cor
rect procedure.
1. Read and fully understand all the safety instructions given earlier in this Section of this Operator's Manual.
DANGER
To avoid serious injury, carefully read and understand the boom safety instructions outlined earlier in
this Section of the Operator's Manual. Failure to follow these instructions could result in severe
personal injury or death.

3. Fully extend the side frames. Refer to Extending The Side Frames" found in Section 1 of this Operator's Manual
for correct procedure.
4. Raise the gantry to the high position. Refer to Raising The Gantry To High Position" found in Section 1 of this
Operator's Manual for correct procedure.
5. Install live mast. Refer to Live Mast As A Boom" found earlier in this Section of this Operator's Manual for correct
procedure.
6. Reeve the live mast as a boom. Refer to Boom Hoist Reeving Diagram" found in Section 5 of this Operator's
Manual for correct procedure.
7. Install the counterweights. Refer to Counterweight Installation And Removal" found in Section 1 of this Opera
tor's Manual for the correct procedure.
8. Using the live mast, layout the top section and boom extensions. (If assembling basic boom, layout the top
section only.) Pin them together on blocking as shown in Figure 4-20. Locate the boom sections as shown in
the Boom Make Up Chart" found earlier in this Section of the Operator's Manual. Make sure the lattice form a
continuous zig zag pattern from one section to another. Improper assembly will cause unequal loads to be
carried through the boom, weakening the structure. The boom base section must remain separate from the rest
of the boom at this point.

handling link on boom base section and spreader bar on live mast.
6. Raise boom enough to relieve pressure on bottom connecting pins. The extensions, 10' (3.05m) to 160'
(48.8m), and 20' (6.1m) boom top section may be lifted up enough for the bottom connecting pins to be re
moved, but cannot be cantilevered (lifted entirely off the ground) using the make-up pendants in this manner.
Remove bottom connecting pins, see Double Tapered Pin Removal" found earlier in this Operator's Manual.

1. Park the crane on a firm, level surface and set the
boom onto secure blocking.
2. Manually operate the limit switch by pushing the
actuator arm. Pull the boom hoist lever. Boom
should not raise. Allow switch to return to original
position and pull boom hoist lever again. Boom
should raise indicating limit switch is functioning
properly.
3. Slowly and carefully boom up until the boom
reaches 82_. If limit switch does not actuate or ac
tuates before boom reaches the 82_ boom angle,
limit switch must be adjusted.
4. Lower boom to a position which allows room to ad
just the switch. Loosen setscrew in actuator arm.
Slowly raise the boom to 82_ angle. Tighten the
setscrew.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the boom hoist limit
switch activates at 82_.
CAUTION
Do not raise the boom too tightly against the
backstops. When setting down a heavy load
at maximum boom angle, the recoil action of
the boom could damage the boom or the
backstops.

Boom Pin Danger Label
1. Read and fully understand all the safety instructions given earlier in this Section of this Operator's Manual.
DANGER
To avoid serious injury, carefully read and understand the boom safety instructions outlined earlier in
this Section of this Operator's Manual. Failure to follow these instructions could result in severe
personal injury or death.
2. Park the crane on a firm, level surface. Position the upper directly over the front or rear of the crawler and engage
the travel swing lock.

3. Lower the boom top section onto secure blocking. Remove the hook block and secure the winch line at the
drum.
4. Lower the bridle enough to allow the boom pendants to become loose, allowing them to be removed. Discon
nect and remove boom pendants and remaining rigging.

5. Connect spreader bar to the handling link.
6. Raise boom enough to relieve pressure on bottom connecting pins. The extensions, 10' (3.05m) to 110'
(33.5m), and 20' (6.1m) boom top section may be lifted up enough for the bottom connecting pins to be re
moved, but cannot be cantilevered (lifted entirely off the ground). Remove bottom connecting pins, see Double
Tapered Pin Removal" found earlier in this Operator's Manual.
CAUTION
Do not cantilever beyond the boom connection point. Damage to the boom may occur.

7. Lower boom onto blocking. Check that the boom is adequately supported. While standing outside the boom,
drive the top connecting pins out, see Double Tapered Pin Removal" found earlier in this Operator's Manual.

Raise The Boom Base Section
8. Carefully raise the boom base section and pull away from the boom.
9. Lower base section and remove assembly rigging.
Note: Handling links may be left installed on the boom to facilitate future boom assembly and disassem
bly.
10. If required, remove the boom base section. Refer to Boom Base Section Removal" found later in this Opera
tor's Manual.

Operator's Manual
Tubular Jib Assembly &
Disassembly
The following procedures outline the recommended
steps necessary for safe jib assembly, disassembly,
and installation on the tubular and angle booms.
Depending upon job site conditions and the availability
of auxiliary equipment, these procedures can be
modified using only known, proven, safe procedures to
increase the efficiency of the jib installation.
Regardless of the specific method used for the installa
tion of the jib, certain procedures must be followed to
prevent reckless or inadvertent dropping of the jib or jib
mast. Improper assembly or disassembly of the jib
also can lead to severe personal injury or death.
Unrepairable damage to jib could also occur. Any
questions regarding safe jib assembly or disassembly
procedures should be directed to your Distributor.
Jib Capacity
The jib capacity is limited by the strength of jib
components and stability of the machine for any
combination of the following variables:
Boom length
DANGER
Jib length
Angle of jib with respect to ground
Load radius
