Backstops
This crane is equipped with mechanical type back
stops. Refer to Figure 4-1. The backstops are con
nected to the upper frame and the boom or the live
mast. The backstops are used to limit the movement of
the boom or live mast at minimum radius. The back
stops have telescoping ends that extend and retract to
allow for adequate movement of the boom or live mast.

When the boom or live mast approaches minimum ra

dius, the spring loaded bumpers on the backstops pro
vide a cushioning effect. Once the boom or live mast
contacts these bumpers, the boom hoist limit switch is
activated and the boom hoist function is disabled. Re
fer to Boom Hoist Limit System" in Section 1 of this Op

Deflector rollers are mounted in pillow block bearings

bolted to the top of the boom. They are used to guide
the hoist rope over the top of the boom. One deflector
roller must be mounted to the base end of the top
section and each boom extension.

Boom Inspection
Inspect the boom periodically to make sure it has not
been damaged. If a boom or jib section has been
damaged, it must be repaired or replaced before the
boom is used. Damaged lattice can be replaced.
Consult Distributor for information on lattice
replacement.

Boom extensions, boom top section, and boom base

section must be equipped with boom pin removal
danger labels. Refer to illustration. These danger
labels are placed on all pin connected boom sections,
at the factory, as a reminder of the importance of using
correct procedures to remove pins from these booms.
Before starting boom assembly or after disassembly,
check each boom section for warning labels. Any
labels that are scratched, painted over, worn, or
unreadable must be replaced. Contact your nearest
distributor for replacement boom pin removal danger
labels.

Note: If a main chord is bent or damaged, the boom

section must be replaced before making any lifts.

Assembly & Disassembly
With Live Mast
The following procedures outline the recommended
steps necessary for safe boom base section
installation and complete self assembly or disassem
bly of the boom. Depending upon job site conditions
and the availability of auxiliary equipment, these
procedures can be modified using only known,
proven, safe procedures to increase the efficiency of
boom assembly.

4-24

Regardless of the specific method used to assemble or

disassemble the boom, certain procedures must be
followed to prevent reckless or inadvertent dropping of
the boom. Improper assembly or disassembly of the
boom can lead to severe personal injury or death.
Unrepairable damage to boom sections could also oc
cur.
Any questions regarding safe boom assembly or dis
assembly procedures should be directed to your Distri
butor.

labels are placed on all pin connected boom sections,
at the factory, as a reminder of the importance of using
correct procedures to remove pins from these booms.

Boom Inspection
Inspect the boom periodically to make sure it has not
been damaged. If a boom or jib section has been
damaged, it must be repaired or replaced before the
boom is used. Damaged lattice can be replaced.
Consult Distributor for information on lattice
replacement.

Before starting boom assembly or after disassembly,

check each boom section for warning labels. Any
labels that are scratched, painted over, worn, or
unreadable must be replaced. Contact your nearest
distributor for replacement boom pin removal danger
labels.

The following procedures outline the recommended
steps necessary for safe jib assembly, disassembly,
and installation on the tubular and angle booms.
Depending upon job site conditions and the availability
of auxiliary equipment, these procedures can be
modified using only known, proven, safe procedures to
increase the efficiency of the jib installation.
Regardless of the specific method used for the installa
tion of the jib, certain procedures must be followed to
prevent reckless or inadvertent dropping of the jib or jib
mast. Improper assembly or disassembly of the jib
also can lead to severe personal injury or death.
Unrepairable damage to jib could also occur. Any
questions regarding safe jib assembly or disassembly
procedures should be directed to your Distributor.

5. Stay clear of pinch points when aligning jib section

connecting points. Never place your fingers in
connecting pin holes.
6. Fully assemble the jib before installing it on the
boom. Do not attempt to add or remove jib exten
sions with the jib installed on the boom. Properly
remove the jib from the boom before modifying the
jib length.
7. Use caution when disconnecting the dead end of
wire ropes. Reeved rope can become twisted on
the sheaves. When the dead end pin or socket is
removed, the rope may spin.
8. The jib cannot be used on boom lengths longer
than 190 ft (57.9m) on the tubular boom and 140 ft
(42.7m) on the angle boom.

Jib Backstay Pendant

The basic jib backstay pendant is 47' 3.25" (14.4m)
long. It runs from a set of links at the base of the boom
top section, around the equalizer sheave on the jib strut
and hooks to another set of links at the other side of the
base of the boom top section. Refer to Figure 4-90.

Changing Jib Angle

To change the jib angle with respect to the boom,
proceed as follows:
1. The basic jib backstay pendants position the jib at
a 5 offset to the boom. Refer to Figure 4-89.
2. To position the jib at a 15 angle, add one 3' 4.5"
(1.03m) pendant to the basic jib backstay pendant.
3. To position the jib at a 25 angle, add two 3' 4.5"
(1.03m) pendants to the basic jib backstay pen
dant.

Tubular Jib Assembly

1. Layout the jib on blocking and assemble the de

sired length. Refer to Figure 4-89.
2. Pin the jib strut to the jib base section.

4-60

Do not stand or work below the jib strut at

anytime. If the jib strut falls you may be
injured or killed.
6. With a helper crane, raise the jib strut and connect
the front jib strut backstops.
7. Disconnect the helper crane from the jib strut. If
necessary, use the helper crane to raise the jib top
section to allow connection of the jib backstay pen
dants to the links on the boom upper section.
Note: Two sets of backstay links are required.
The links fit over the lifting lug on the pin con
nection and are held together by two bolts with
a spacer between the links.
8. Assemble the rear jib strut backstops between the
jib strut and the boom top section. If necessary,
raise the main boom up to get sufficient distance
between jib strut and boom top section to install jib
strut backstops.
9. Properly reeve the jib with winch rope. Refer to
Wire Rope Reeving Diagram" in Section 5 or this
Operator's Manual.
10. Refer to Liftoff Capabilities" in the Crane Rating
Manual for traveling the machine. Refer to the
Crane Rating Manual for all lifting capacities.

Changing Jib Length

1. If it is necessary to change the length of the jib

(adding or removing jib sections), the jib must be
lowered onto blocking to make the change. Follow
the Tubular Jib Disassembly" procedures to lower
the jib and disassemble it as required. If removing
jib sections to shorten the jib, remove them at this
point. If adding jib sections and/or reassembling
different length jib sections, follow the procedures
in Tubular Jib Assembly" to assemble the desired
jib length.
