Note

The following should not be repaired:

Optics Serial Number is less than 2775
RR (failure 3 times) is before the Optics Serial Number
It may be necessary to clean any field-returned parts, for example, blow the dust out
of the optics with canned air and clean the reflective surfaces.

Failure History and Detection

Symptom: Horizontal Banding artifacts or Error Code 602. Typically, the fogged L3
lens (see Appendix A) could cause horizontal banding Image artifacts or Error Code 602.
Correction: Replace the L3 lens assembly.
Symptom: Error Code 602 and/or 913. The Spinner Motor Mirror can be affected by a
contamination that causes the mirror to turn a yellowish color (see Appendix B) and then
generate Error Code 602 and/or 913.
Correction: Replace the Scanner Assembly.
Symptom Error Code 602 and/or 913. Incorrect resistor on optical control board can
cause Error Code 602 and/or 913. Started with Rev B of board. September 2006, s/n
81505021. Corrected in Manufacturing November 29, 2007 s/n is 81507506.
Correction: Replace the optical control board.
Note: There are two other mirrors in the Optics assembly that also generate problems
(Error Code 913 or 602) by becoming degraded (see appendix C) by a contaminant.
These mirrors cannot be replaced or adjusted correctly without the correct test fixture. If
theses mirrors are found to be degraded, stop the repair procedure.

Replace the L3 Lens (8E5801)

The L3 lens replacement takes about 30 minutes.
1. Take the Optic FRU from the machine: unscrew 5 screws on the flat cover of
the Optics and remove it.
2. Remove 4 screws from the plastic cover and separate the plastic cover.
3. Remove the 3 screws that hold on the L3 lens bracket and separate L3 lens
bracket.
4. Reverse the process for installing new L3 lens bracket and both the covers
(flat & plastic) back to the Optics FRU.
5. This step is a PM for Optics: make sure the optics assembly laser aperture slot
is clean and free from dust or foreign objects. Clean the Optics Module with
canned or compressed air, absolute alcohol wipes.
6. Install the Optics FRU back to the machine.
Replace the Assembly-Scanner (96000009934)
The Spinner motor replacement takes about 40 minutes.
1. Take the Optic FRU from the machine. Unscrew the 4 screws on the plastic
cover of the Optics and remove it.
2. Unscrew 5 screws on the flat cover of the Optic and remove it.
3. Remove 3 screws holding L3 lens bracket and separate the L3 lens bracket.
4. Remove the Spinner motor power connector from Optics Controller Board.
5. Remove the sponge to access the Allen screw holding Spinner motor with
mirror to the chassis.
6. Remove the 2 Allen screws to take out Spinner Motor with mirror.
7. Install the new Spinner Motor with Mirror.
8. Reverse the process for assembling the Optics FRU.
9. This step is a PM for Optics: make sure the optics assembly laser aperture slot
is clean and free from dust or foreign objects. Clean the Optics Module with
canned or compressed air, absolute alcohol wipes.
10. Install the Optics back in the machine.
Replace the Optics Control Board (8F2645)
The Optics control board replacement takes about 40 minutes.
1. Take the Optics FRU from the machine. Unscrew 4 screws on the plastic
cover of the Optics and remove it.
2. Unscrew 4 screws and 5 cable connections on Optics Control board.
3. Remove the Optics Control board and replace it with another or new Optics
Control board.
4. Fix 4 screws and 5 cable connections on Control board.
5. Fix 4 screws on the cover of the Optic.
6. This step is a PM for Optics: make sure the optics assembly laser aperture slot
is clean and free from dust or foreign objects. Clean the Optics Module with
canned or compressed air, absolute alcohol wipes.
7. Install Optics back to the machine.

8. Connect Service PC to MCS monitor Port using MPC cable.

9. Turn on machine.
10. Check range of Absolute Max Power (18 22).
11. Check value of Power Monitor Attn Open (2492 - 3950).
12. Verify NVRAM parameters.
Testing and Acceptance Criteria
Below is the Testing procedure for Optics.
1. Install the repaired Optics into the test fixture. Make sure the power is off on
the test fixture during the installation and then power on the machine.
2. Adjusting Laser Dynamic Range. Connect SecureLink and WebLink. Click
Diagnostic MCS Optics adjusting Laser Dynamic Range Run. If the
Status indicates a failure, run the adjustment one more time.
3. Print Calibration, Grayout and EOL test Prints. Start WinDPSTester,
Print Grayout-1.8 Optic Density for 8150/8100/8200.
4. Evaluation of Grayout.
For 8150, inspect the Grayout for Capstan Banding and Microbanding.
Consult the Visual stand noted for final acceptance. Anything worse than a
Level 9 for Capstan Banding or anything worse than the Microbanding
standard is a failure. Otherwise, accept and continue to Step 5.
For 8100/8200, inspect the Grayout for Capstan Banding and Microbanding.
Consult the Visual stand noted for final acceptance. Anything worse than a
Level 8 for Capstan Banding or anything worse than the Microbanding
standard is a failure. Otherwise, accept and continue to Step 5.
5. Evaluation of EOL Test Print.
Visually evaluate the EOL TestPrint according to the noted Visual Standard
for Jitter, Pixel Stretch and Ghosting. Anything worse than these standards is a
failure. Otherwise, accept.
Tracking
Below actions will track the repaired optics.
1. Once repaired optics pass the testing, use a sticker marked R before the
Optics Serial Number to certify the repaired parts.
2. If the optics has already been repaired before (Sticker R already exists)
place a 2nd sticker marked R next to first one.
3. Warehouse takes the repaired optics into the system using R as suffix in the
part number.
4. FE gives a feedback once repaired optics (Sticker R or RR already exists)
installed back site, including SN of machine, SN of Optics, installation date.
5. Local SE creates a file to record the feedback from FE.
