Elvius Dungdung from DSWC
came as a local guide. They
spent a few hours in our
campus and drew the
attention of our hostel children
by performing some
Japanese skills and cultural
arts. Later in the evening they
played a friendly foot-ball
match in which our children
won convincingly.
On 2 and 3 August Topchanchi
Block level Subroto Roy Cup
Football Tournament was
conducted in our school
premises. Six different

schools participated in the boys' category.

Both our teams from the Junior and Seniors
sections emerged champions. At the district
level our senior foot-ball team Under-17years
category became champions but our junior
boys Under-14 years gave a good fight in the
final against St. Xaviers, Tundi and remained
runners-up at the district level. It is the first
time in the history of our school that we won
two cups in the same tournament on the same
day. Congratulations go out to Sch. Alok who
has been inspiring and accompanying our
team closely. From 24 to 27 August, he was in
Hazaribag for the next level of the tournament.
Good luck, Alok!
This year the Deanery Kurusvir Animators
Meeting was held in DSWC, Govindpur where

Sr. Mukta and Ms. Satya represented our

parish and school. They were impressed by
Niranjan's charm, creativity, ideas and
dynamism.
31 August will be a memorable day for our
parishioners as we are getting ready to
celebrate the feast of St. Monica and it will also
be the official beginning of the fund raising for
a Church building. On this day people from
other Churches are also invited to participate
in the cultural events and in the mini-mela that
is organized by our parish women and youth.
On 22 August we were shocked by the sudden
death of Sr. Cicily, SCN, a dynamic Sister who
visited Gomoh on 2 and 3 August.

John Mundu is one Jesuit who is ever on
the move, who disappears and appears at
Tarunoday. In a way he is in great demand.
He is responding to the call to teach and to
share his insights with others. He attended
the Province Consult to Jamshedpur and,
together with Fr. Jerry Cutinha, worked on
the Gospels in the HO language after
spending weeks in the seminary of Morning
Star, Barrackpore, Kolkata. Presently he is
teaching a course in Pathalgoan. Come
September and he will be flying to Rome at
the invitation of Father General. Here is a
quote from Fr. General to our Provincial to
explain John's visit to Rome: I have
decided to invite Fr John Mundu of your
Province to join this Secretariat whose
members normally meet once a year here
with me at the Curia in Rome. I am confident
that Fr. Mundu, who is a tribal, is proficient in
theology and has done some research in
the field of tribal religions, will be a valuable
addition to this team of experts whose
guidance I find very helpful for my own
thinking and governance. I am writing to Fr
Mundu separately to invite him to serve as a
member of the Secretariat.

SEPTEMBER 2014

The month of July and August witnessed a few

noteworthy happenings at Sankhabhanga. On
31 July, the Feast of St Ignatius, the students
put up a beautiful, meticulously planned
program that lasted for an hour. The
inauguration of the feast- day with a prayer
service around the statue of St. Ignatius by the
road was an impressive one. The first half was
dedicated to the school and the second half
was graced by Rt Rev. Simon Kaipuram, the
Bishop of Balasore. The local religious, nearly
30 of them, shared a festal dinner with the
Jesuits. All the 5 Jesuits made significant
contribution to make this day a success.
As for the affiliation to ICSE, the preliminary
filling-in-forms is done. A few to and fro

interesting topics. The first Weekend Insight

the Smell of the Library and the Smell of the

As a noble attempt of Second Phase Green

Revolution, line method paddy cultivation is
gradually gaining ground in Odisha with so
many schemes and incentives. In
collaboration with the agriculture department,
an in-field demonstration training was
organized for the farmers of Subarnagiri GP. It
is worth-mentioning that one village called
Madapaju which refrained from line method
cultivation for the last five years, has now
happily adopted this method due to its high
yielding capacity.
In the Mundigada GP, a training programme on
ground-nut cultivation was organized at
Tutuluba. Instead of chemical fertilizers, vermicompost is being popularized throughout
Kandhamal. As a matter of fact, OCI is all set
for the distribution of vermi-compost
equipment.
On 15 August, OCI organized Independence
Day celebration at the remotest possible
schools of both GPs. After the celebration, a
short meeting was conducted for children,
teachers, guests and villagers at Madaspaju
School of Mundigada GP. In the meeting, Fr.
Gyan P. Kujur asked children, Do you
dream? and all answered 'Yes'. He further
asked, When? and they answered at night.
For the personal and national development, Fr.
Gyan suggested to the children to dream
during the day time. Hats off to Fr. Gyan for his
inspiring message!

followed by felicitation of the Jesuits and a
colourful cultural programme put up by the
children of the school and the students of the
college. A short skit on Ignatius with the
message of Finding God in All Things for the
Greater Glory of God was enacted by the
college students. On the eve of Founder's Day
the students appeared for a Quiz Competition
on St. Ignatius. It was fun as well as it gave them
an insight into Ignatius's life and work.
The 68th Independence Day was celebrated on
the school ground for the children and at the
porch of the college for the students. Fr. Hillary
Lobo unfurled the Tricolour while others sang
the National Anthem. It was followed by two
speeches, patriotic songs and a fantastic
dance. The Chief Guest for the school function
was Mr. Ronny D Costa who highlighted the
importance of keeping the environment clean
and free of pollution. He encouraged the kids to
strive hard in making Xavier School the best in
India. Today special efforts are made to keep
the school premises neat and clean.
School news: On 11 August, Fr. Kuruvilla's
birthday was celebrated in a fitting manner at the
school hall. The students put up a scintillating
programme on the newly built stage which is
equipped with an LCD projector. During the
month of August several competitions were
successfully conducted in the school. The most
important one was organized by the GK and ArtCraft Clubs on 9 August. Altogether eight schools
came from Jamshedpur to participate in this
mega event. The staff and the students of Xavier

School did an excellent job on this day. Most of

the parents came to collect the report cards of the
children, which was distributed on 16 August.
The process for the affiliation of Xavier School
with ICSE board has begun.
College News: This year altogether 145
candidates appeared for the admission interview
and 90 of them took admission for the BBA, B.Com
and BCA courses. A Cleaning Drive was
proposed, planned and executed by Fr. Staney,
the Administrator and Treasurer of the College,
involving all the students in clearing the
surrounding. A Samsung Youth Carnival was
conducted by the Storm Communications Ltd.
wherein the students participated and showcased
their singing, dancing and other talents through
creative games. As directed by the DSW, Kolhan
University, Chaibasa, the college celebrated the 6th
Foundation Day of Kolhan University on 13
August. A Power Point Presentation was done by
the third year students. They too had patriotic
songs and speech competition on Education and
Kolhan University. The next day the there was a
report appeared in the vernacular press.
This year too our BCA students went to Karim City
College for their Physics Practical Exam in August
and the University allowed the college to have the
Home Centre for the Computer Practical Exams
with the freedom of appointing the External
Examiners for the exams. By God's providence,
just two days before the commencement of the
University Exams, we got the Affiliation Letter from
HRD, Ranchi for the 2013-16 batch of students.
Thus, the First Years, could appear for their
