How will my child enter the 8th Grade Academy?
The 8th grade students have a separate entrance to the building. They will continue to ride on
the buses with the high school students and enter the 8th Grade Academy wing. The high
school students will be dropped off at the Masuk main entrance.
How does the 8th Grade Academy exist as a “school within a school”?
The 8th Grade Academy reception desk will be staffed throughout the school day to greet
students and visitors. There will be a security person located at the corner of The 8th Grade
Academy wing. The responsibility of these employees will be to monitor student activities in
these areas. All of the academic and many of the exploratory classes will be housed within The
8th Grade Academy wing. The gymnasium, music rooms, cafeteria, and library will be utilized by
the 8th graders.
What other areas of Masuk will be used and how will student access those areas?
The gymnasium, music rooms, cafeteria, and library will be used by the students in 8th grade.
Major passing times will be staggered for high school and 8th grade students allowing 8th grade
students in the halls when Masuk students are in class.
Will there be a change in the way 8th grade student are scheduled or instructed?
No. Eighth graders will be scheduled in the same manner as they are currently at Jockey Hollow.
The exception will be the continuation of eighth grade students participating in high school
math classes as has occurred successfully for three years. All other classes are currently planned
to be for grade 8 students only.
How will physical education be delivered to my child?
There are four physical education areas at Masuk High School. The 8th Grade Academy will use
one of the four areas for their Physical Education classes. The Masuk students will use the other
three areas.
There are two sets of locker rooms at Masuk. The 8th grade students and the 9th grade students
will use the “pool locker rooms” to change. The 10th – 12th grade students will use the main
locker rooms.
Will the grade 8 students be scheduled on teams as they are currently at Jockey Hollow?
Yes, there will be three academic teams just as there are now at Jockey Hollow. Specific
classrooms have been identified for the Intrigue Team, the Commander Team, and the Excursion
Team.
What time will grade 8 eat lunch?
All eighth graders will have the same lunch wave from 10:43 a.m. – 11:13 a.m. This lunch time is
again staggered so that 8th grade students will be in the halls when high school students are in
classes.
Will high school staff be teaching grade 8 classes?
The current plan has all classes instructed by teachers from Jockey Hollow with the possible
exception of music. Of course, all efficiencies will be examined to share resources.
What will the hours of the school day be?
The school day is scheduled to operate the same as this year. The opening and dismissal time of
school may be adjusted up to 10 minutes depending on bus routes. Major passing times will be
staggered for high school and 8th grade students allowing 8th grade students in the halls when
Masuk students are in class.
Will the grade 8 students have their own restrooms and lockers?
Yes, there is a set of male/female restrooms that were designated for staff that will be used by
the 8th grade students.
There will be enough lockers so that every 8th grader will have a locker in the 8th Grade Academy
wing.
Will co‐curricular activities be available for the eighth grade?
Yes, co‐curricular activities such as, cross country, track, baseball, and softball will continue to
use Jockey Hollow and Wolfe Park facilities. 7th and 8th grade basketball will continue to use the
Jockey Hollow facility. Clubs will be offered after school in the 8th grade academy wing. Theater
will be offered with grades 6 and 7 at Jockey Hollow. We look forward to hosting activities
designed to promote mentorship and/or support in the future.
Will there be a computer room, a guidance counselor office, and areas for student support?
Yes, there is a room in the 8th Grade Academy wing that is designated as a computer room. The
computer exploratory class will use that space. Lap top carts will be available for teachers to use
in their classrooms. A space for the guidance counselor has been developed for private as well
as group meetings. Space has also been developed for teachers to work with students in small
groups in order to provide the needed support for student success. A school psychologist will
continue to be a member of the staff to provide services.
Will social and celebratory events and activities continue as they had at Jockey Hollow?
Yes, 8th grade dances, 8th grade recognition (graduation)ceremony and team celebrations will
continue.
