RECOMMENDATION
Adopt Resolution establishing Salary Range 443 for the position of Police Commander.

SUMMARY
I made a mistake. On 4 August, the Council received a report and adopted a resolution establishing
certain salary ranges for certain management positions. In the resolution, I stated that the salary range
for the positon of Police Commander should be set at Range 404 at $100,200 to $121,788. The Staff
Report read that "The ranges provide the opportunity for utilization over many years without the need
for Council adjustment. As examples , the current salaries , based upon information available to me,
were set as of 1 July 2010 ."
The range recommended in August was in error since the current salary for the position tops out at
$121,788. This is just slightly more than the current At-Will contract specifies for annual compensation
to the incumbent. Any future positive performance review with an accompany salary increase would
push the compensation up against the top of the range and would not provide for future adjustments in
"out" years .
The proposed re-set for the salary contained in the attached resolution places the position in Range
443---$121 ,740-$147,984.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARMEL BY THE SEA

ESTABLISHING SALARY RANGE 443 FOR THE POSITION OF POLICE COMMANDER

WHEREAS, on 4 August 2015 the City Council adopted a new salary range for the
position of Police Commander, along with other salary range adjustments for other managerial
positions; and
WHEREAS , the range recommended to Council in August is incorrect; and
WHEREAS, the City Administrator has recommended to Council that the correct salary
range for the position of Police Commander be Range 443;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CARMEL BY THE SEA DOES:
1. Establish the salary range for the position of Pol ice Commander at Range 443 and
rescinds the range established on 4 August 2015.
