casos ms conocidos en la comunidad cientfica de este abuso del
debate en las reas bajo escrutinio son los que han llevado a la
renuncia de los editores de revistas cientficas en reconocimiento a que
faltando a sus obligaciones, haban permitido la publicacin de artculos
que no haban sido revisados con la suficiente diligencia como para
descubrir que lo que se afirmaba en ellos, era falso (la controversia de
Soon y Baliunas 2003, Spencer y Braswell 2011, UAH press 2011,
Nature 2011, Wagner 2011).
Adems de estas tres tcticas dirigidas a debilitar la percepcin
pblica del consenso cientfico, la literatura dedicada a la agnognesis
del problema contiene tambin temas que se refieren a la ciencia en s,
aunque de nuevo y por lo general, son engaosas ms que edificantes.
Los dos ejemplos ms comnmente utilizados para tal propsito son la
confusin del estado actual del clima en algn sitio con las tendencias
globales del mismo y la perorata de que los modelos computacionales
de circulacin general son completamente intiles. Empecemos por
aclarar que se trata de dos problemas cuya ndole es muy distinta:
cuando se estudia el clima local y su comportamiento a corto plazo, se
tiene necesariamente un sistema abierto en donde es imposible
controlar la variabilidad intrnseca de todas las componentes del clima
en las fronteras de la regin bajo estudio; se tiene entonces que
cualquier fenmeno que ocurra en cualquier otro sitio del planeta,
afectar los resultados del estudio regional (el ejemplo ms conocido es
el fenmeno alternante de El Nio/La Nia). Sin embargo, cuando se
