Objectives: Prepare students for ESL1190 and, ultimately, WR1010.


Students may enroll in WR1010 after ESL1150 with proper
achievement.

This course will introduce English within an academic context. It covers


passive (reading, listening) and active (writing, speaking) skills,
including:

• academic writing: summarizing, paraphrasing, proper citation;


• vocabulary in common academic content areas;
• lecture listening and note-taking ;
• text-book reading strategies;
• presentation strategies

Policies:

• Disruptive class behavior will be handled according to NEC


policies (i.e., Academic Catalogue, 72-73).

• Academic dishonesty (e.g., cheating, plagiarism) will be


handled according to NEC policies (Academic Catalogue, 75): "F"
on the test/assignment & reported to Registrar; possible course
failure if the test/assignment is "of major significance in the total
course." (Academic Catalogue, 75). A second instance may
result in expulsion. (Id.).

Grading:

Materials: Instructor supplied. The course will use written, audio, and
visual materials. The course blog, http://esl1150.typepad.com, will
deliver most materials and provide a space for homework, projects,
and other evaluations. The blog is private: only invited participants
may read or post to it. You will be given a username and password to
read and post to it.
