1-The Ace Electronics Corporation produces electronic calculators and markets them on a
national basis. These calculators are sent to the division warehouses in lots of 1,000. You, as the
warehouse manager, will not accept a lot of calculators if you think more than 5% are defective.
You sample twenty calculators (n = 20) and test to see how many are defective and how many are
good. Find the following if n = 20 and p = 0.05:

a. The probability of finding exactly one defective.

b. The probability of finding more than one defective.
c. The probability of finding from one to three defectives.
d. The mean and standard deviation
e. Suppose you have just found three defectives in the sample. Would your
recommendation be to keep the lot of 1,000 calculators or return them?
f. How many defectives would you expect to find in a sample of n = 20 if there is
actually a 5% defective rate in a lot?

2- In a study for a local hospital you have found that the average number of arrivals at the
emergency room between 6 P.M. and 9 P.M. on Friday night is five patients. Using a Poisson
distribution, answer the following:

a. What is the probability distribution describing emergency room arrivals?

b. Is this distribution skewed? If so, in what direction?
c. What is the probability that only one or two patients will arrive during the 3-hour
period on any Friday night?
d. What is the probability exactly five patients will arrive?
e. What is the probability more than eight patients will arrive?
f. What are the mean and standard deviation of this probability distribution?
g. Would you expect the same distribution to apply between 6 A.M. and 9 A.M. on
Friday morning? Why or why not?

3- The length of steel I-beams made by the Smokers City Steel Company is normally distributed
with Mean = 25 feet and Standard deviation = 0.25 feet.

a. What is the probability that a steel beam will be less than 24.8 feet long?
b. What is the probability that a steel beam will be more than 25.25 feet long?
c. What is the probability that a steel beam will be between 24.9 and 25.7 feet long?
d. What is the probability that a steel beam will be between 24.6 and 24.9 feet long?
e. What is the probability that a steel beam will be between 25.8 & 26.7 feet long
f. For a particular application, any beam less than 25 feet long must be scrapped. What is
the probability that a beam will have to be scrapped?
4- In a certain examination, the percentage of passes and distinctions were 46 and 9 respectively.
Estimate the average marks obtained by the candidates, the minimum pass and distinction marks
being 40 and 75 respectively. (Assume the distribution of marks to be normal)
a. In what interval do the marks of middle 50% students fall?
b. Suppose the total number of students is 100. Then how many of them will get the
scholarship if it is awarded top 5% students.
c. What would be the answer to part b if top 10% students are awarded scholarships?
