Mga Mensahe

Mama Mary, Happy Birthday!

pagpanginbulahan. Gani, nagapanginbulahan gid ako sa mga nangin bahin sang sini nga publikasyon sang Parokya sang
Katedral sang Jaro kag sang National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles nga sa sulod sining 24 ka tuig nagapangabudlay sing
mabuligan sang CANDLE LIGHT.
nga magsanyog kag magmangin madinalag-on pa gid ining importante nga instrumento sang pagbantala sang Maayong

Coming with a weekly publication is not an easy

work. Much more that it has sustained twenty-four
(24) years of weekly publication without missing a
week.
There are three reasons why Candle Light
has endured through the years. One reason is its
contributors and its hard-working voluntary staff
with the guidance of the past and present editors who
have embraced their work with enthusiasm. Second,
is the guidance of our Mother Mary, Nuestra Seora
de la Candelaria to whom Candle Light is dedicated.
Third, is the guidance of the Holy Spirit who gives us
the strength to persevere.
May all of you who give your best to sustain this
paper be blessed. May our Mother Mary always guide
your endeavors as you continue to serve our Parish
through our weekly paper, Candle Light.
Congratulations and God bless us all.

Si Confucius nagsiling, A journey of a thousand miles

begin with a single step!
Sin-o ang maghunahuna nga ang aton Official Publication
makalab-ot sa sini nga edad. Siguro ang mga nagsugod sini
beinte kwarto aos na nga nag ligad may simple lang nga
handum: ang mapalab-ot ang Maayong Balita. Pero adtong
simple nga handum nagbunga kag nagbunga, kag subong
nagapadayon nga nangin tampad sa pagpahayag sang
Maayong Balita sang aton Ginoo.
Gina-abiabi ko ang mga nagpanguna sining aton
publication humalin sang una tubtub subong. Gina-abiabi
aton publication magahatag sang paglaum, kag inspirasyon
sa aton tanan.
Happy Anniversary and more Anniversaries to come!

At the dawn of every life,

at the birth of every child,
there is always a joyous thought
that brings memories of care,
affection and also pains and anxiety,
but all add up to a poem of Love.

Every human being carries with him or her

the seal of this Love and remembers
the maternal tenderness which is
very hard to remove from the heart.

CANDLE LIGHT (Sept. 6 - 12, 2015)

If we look at Nature
we see so much beauty:
the People, the Mountains,
the Oceans, Rivers, Trees,
the Flowers, Stars and the Birds...
But the Sun doesn't shine on anyone
more beautiful than you, Mother!
Thanks for filling this World
with so much genuine love.
With sincere admiration,
love and respect to you.

Over the years, even when our hair

turns gray, there remains the
distant memories and the strong desire
to see once again Her, who carries
the affectionate name of Mother.
Her name is a fountain of peaceful thoughts,
generosity, serenity and Love.
We always talk nice about our Mother
and we always speak highly of
her merits and good guidance.
and when She is around, a veil of
happiness surrounds our hearts.

Mk 7:31-37

Ang pag-ayo sa isa ka

bungol kag apa
Si Jesus naghalin sa kadutaan
nga sakop sang Tiro kag
nagpadulong sa Linaw sang
Galilea. Nag-agi sia sa Sedon
kag sa kadutaan nga sakop sang
Decapolis. 32Gindala sang mga
tawo sa Iya ang isa ka bungol
nga halos di makahambal.
Nagpakitluoy sila kay Jesus nga
itungtong Niya ang Iya kamot sa
bungol. 33Gindala sia ni Jesus sa
unhan nga malayo sa madamo
nga mga tawo kag sila lang nga
duha. Ginbutang ni Jesus ang
Iya mga tudlo sa mga dulunggan
sang tawo. Nagdupla si Jesus
kag gintandog Niya ang dila sang
tawo. 34Dayon nagtangla Sia sa
langit, nagginhawa sing madalom

May nabasahan

sang nag-donate.
Mga utod, mahilig kita
maghimo sini.
Mahilig kita
magbutang sang aton nga
ngalan, hitsura, ukon ano pa
kay daw indi kita luyag nga ang
aton nga ngalan indi mahayag
kag mahambal. Bisan pa sa
mga naga-donate sa Misa,
kinahanglan mahambal gid ang
ngalan kay kon indi gani, tapos
gid, kay may posibilidad nga
bawi-on pa ang ginhatag niya.

Jesus nga indi pag-isugid bisan
kay sin-o apang sa sagad Niya

ginpanugid nila ini. 37Ang mga

tawo natingala gid kag nagsiling,
maayo gid ang tanan Niya nga
nahimo. Ginahimo Niya nga
makabati ang mga bungol kag
makahambal ang mga apa.

pagkatapos nga gin-ayo Niya

ang masakiton, gindilian Niya
nga magpanugid ini nga Sia ang
nag-ayo sa iya. Tungod para sa
Iya, wala na sang kinahanglan
nga ipahayag pa hitabo. Ang
pinaka importante kay Jesus
amo nga gin-ayo Niya ang bulag.
Sa sini nga bagay, ang aton
Ginoo is setting a good example
sa aton tanan. Sa pagbulig indi
na kinahanglan nga ipakita mo
pa nga ikaw gid ang naghatag.
Dumdumon naton ang Iya
man nga ginsiling sa Mateo
6,3 nga kon magbulig ka sa
mga imol, indi kinahanglan
nga mahibaluan sang imo
wala nga kamot ang ginhimo
sang imo tuo nga kamot. Ang
indi pagpahibalo sang imo
hinimuan nga maayo isa ka
daku nga merito sa langit. Pero
kon ginpahayag mo na, kon
ginpahibalo mo na, ano pa ang
merito nga mahatag sa imo sang
Dios.
That is why nanami-an ako

kon kaisa nga may mga tawo

nga magkadto sa akon, mahatag
sang ila donasyon kag magsiling
Father, indi lang pag-ihambal
nga ako ang naghatag! Kanami!
Mga anonymous donors! But
even though they remain hidden,
but their good works will always
shine in the Kingdom of heaven.
Mga utod, kon magbulig ka,
do not expect for any return,
do not expect nga hatagan ka
sang honor, hatagan ka sang
certificate, hatagan ka sang
medalya. Bulig lang, and you will
have great merits in heaven!

Pamangkot

Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon

ne year from now our weekly paper,

Candle Light, shall celebrate its 25th
Anniversary.
As the present Editor-in-Chief, I am
grateful for the opportunity to serve the
parish through its weekly publication. I know
that I am not really gifted in writing. I would
always reiterate that when I was studying,
I have never been involved in school
publication because writing is not my cup
of tea. Nevertheless, I thank God for tapping
my writing potential by calling me to work in
the Candle Light. At least now, I have gained
confidence in writing and simultaneously
enhanced my communication skills.
However, I know that Candle Light is not
just about me. I have persevered working in
the publication because I have seen its value
in the life of the parish in general and in the
life of each individual who reads the Candle
Light every week. Through the weekly paper,
the faithful, especially the parishioners, can
be updated about the parish administrative
and pastoral programs. We chronicle the
various events in the parish believing
in its historical and formative value. For
our paper to have a universal ecclesial
character, we put from time to time
interesting Vatican, CBCP and Archdiocesan
News. We also write articles which feature
the lives of saints and teach Christian values.
Moreover, we exercise accountability and
stewardship by publishing the weekly
financial report of our weekly collection.
Thus, we can say that from simply a
paper which disseminates the information
regarding parish activities, Candle Light
has many things to offer and share now. No
wonder Candle Light is not just in the service
of the faithful of Jaro but for other parishes
and communities as well, for everyone! Many
churchgoers get copies of it every week and

share it to their families and communities.

Candle Light, however, is not a perfect
publication. The members of the Editorial
Board are not really experts in journalism.
Most of them are serving in a voluntary basis.
I, myself, am a trying hard editor. Hence, as
you have experienced, there are some clerical
and grammatical errors despite our collective
efforts to edit and proofread every issue.
Moreover, there are times that the members

Yes, Candle Lights

journey in 24 years has
never been perfect. Yet, in
its imperfections, we see
and experience God loving
us perfectly.

of the editorial board find it challenging to

relate well with one another because of some
individual differences. We ask your apology for
all our shortcomings.
Yes, Candle Lights journey in 24
years has never been perfect. Yet, in its
imperfections, we see and experience God
loving us perfectly. In our weaknesses, Jesus
continues to embrace and Mary unceasingly
prays for us. Through His grace, the Candle
Light has been instrumental in enlightening
peoples lives so that they may follow Christ
Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Hence, as we journey towards our Silver
Jubilee next year, we hold in our hearts Gods
faithfulness and merciful love. Let us be
thankful to God and to Mary and let us express
our gratitude through our selflessness and
generosity in supporting Candle Light, now and
always!

Our Saving God

Heal and Save Like Jesus

Eve Horvidalla

goes to his room and opens whatever gadget

he has instead of listening to each other.
Jesus in the Gospel wants us to see the
events around us which for all we know are
little miracles in the lives of people who are
touched. It may be an encouraging smile
for someone who is depressed, and that
could brighten his dark world. It could be
a friendly phone call or a visit to a lonely
person who needs to talk to someone to
cheer him up. It could be coming home early
to have more time to be present to his family
instead of spending time with his barkada.
It could even be a simple act of turning off
the TV and spending time with the family
and listening to each other. It could also be
sending a bunch of bananas or other fruits or
any food, or book unexpectedly to a friend.
It could be remembering with simple tokens
during important events in a persons life
like birthdays or anniversaries. It could be
offering to bring home a friend in your car.
Whatever we do, or however we
answer anothers needs, it would be helpful
to remember that we are also doing Gods
offer of salvation through the good we do
to others. When we reach out to others in
any way to help them, we are also acting like
Jesus to heal and save.

he Weather Bureau has predicted

that starting October, El Nio
will strike the Western Visayas,
that means, us. Fear struck the hearts
of those who heard the news. They
thought of water shortage, of no rainfall,
of extreme heat.
We cannot deny the fact that weather
calamities bring with them many lives
regardless of age. It is the duty of the
government to divulge predictions so that
we can prepare for their coming.
However, our faith teaches us that if
our faith in God is strong, there is nothing
impossible with anything in this world.
God is the Creator of the universe. He
knows what to do, what to give, He knows
the needs and wants of His creatures,
He knows when to make their prayers
answered.
The Lord knows the destruction that
a storm brings. Houses, properties, crops,
are destroyed or dismantled.
Water,
thunder, and sometimes lightning bring
worries and fear. Only fervent prayers

Kids

and promise of reform and transformation

can calm catastrophes.
El Nios extreme heat can destroy
lives and properties. It is predicted by the
Weather Bureau that sometime in October,
it will come and it cannot be said when it
would end. That is what our experts said.
How about the Lord? We are His sons and
daughters and only He can say when our
temporal life would end. We cannot say
anything but Yes to God.
I am very thankful that during these late
years of my life, I have formed a devotion to
God the Father which I try to spread around
me; my family members, my friends, my
neighbors, anybody. I regret that I havent
discovered this devotion during the years of
my apostolate, when my husband and I went
every Saturday and Sunday to the barrios,
towns, and other places in order to enhance
the devotion to God.
Today, in my waning years, I wake up
with a prayer to God the Father on my lips,
to Jesus of Divine Mercy to let the Blood and
Water from His Heart flow down upon us and

cleanse us, to the Holy Spirit for guidance and

wisdom, and to our Blessed Mother for her
love and intervention.
If the Weather Bureau has its predictions,
we, the children of God, also have our feelings
when we look up to heaven for mercy and
guidance.
God the Father from His throne on high
is simply waiting for us to accept Him as
our real Father. He holds the globe with His
left Hand and raises His right Hand for His
blessing. His crown is on His left foot and the
right foot is bare. Angels surround Him, He
looks down with concern and care.
Let us hold hands in our imagination and
look up to God the Father for love, mercy,
and guidance. Even if we are busy; even if
we are in a hurry to perform our obligations,
we must not fail to say a prayer to God the
Father. We must not forget that everything
has its end. When it is time for us to leave
this world, can we say: I still have much
work to do. I dont want to die now. I want
to die only when I have finished my work and
fulfilled my ambition. Can we say this?

saving power. God cares for His children.

What is important is to open our hearts
and minds to Him and establish a close
relationship with Him.
In our present world we often cannot
hear Jesus. He keeps calling us but we are
like the deaf-mute and refuse to hear His
call and do what He wants us to do. We
are occupied with the many gadgets the
modern world presents to us. We spend
more time with our cell phones, face books,
tablets, I-pads, etc. Time is spent less for
listening or not anymore, to Jesus words
from the Bible. Many people do not have
any knowledge of the Word of God. It is
unfortunate that we listen more to the
world which drowns what God wants to tell
us. We sit down in church, but our minds
are not focused on Gods word read to us
or in the homily of the priest. Our thoughts
wander as to where we will go or do as soon
as we go out of the church. The television
occupies so much of our time once we start
to sit down to watch the television. We sit
together to eat our meals but each one at
the table is holding and talking to his cell
phone, tablet, or I-pad, instead of sharing his
activities to members of his family. There is
no more time to talk to one another. Each

n the Gospels we note that the sick are

often brought to Jesus for healing. He
spent most of His time healing the sick,
freeing the oppressed and those possessed
by demons. Wherever He was, people
flocked to Him bringing their sick for
healing. The woman with the hemorrhage
pushed through the crowd just to be able
to touch even the tassel of Jesus robe (Mt.
9:22). She was healed because of her faith.
Friends of a paralytic had to make a hole
on the roof so that they could lower the
man on his mat for Jesus to heal (Mk. 2:3-5,
9-12). After healing Peters mother-in-law,
the whole town crowded at the door of the
house and brought to Him all who were
sick and possessed by demons. He cured
many who were sick with various diseases
and drove out many demons (Mk 1:32-34).
In the Gospel this Sunday, (Mk 7:3137), we read that a deaf-mute is brought
to Jesus by his friends for healing. Jesus
took the man away from the crowd. He
put his finger into the mans ears, and,
spitting, touched his tongue; then looked
up to heaven and groaned, and said to
him, Ephphatha!! - that is, Be opened!
Immediately the man was able to hear and
speak.
Why did Jesus groan? Jesus knew that
the people around Him who brought the
deaf-mute to him saw only the miracle,
but are examples of people who have eyes
and ears but cannot see and hear the deeper
meaning of the miracle. They brought the
deaf-mute to Him, they were overjoyed
to witness the miracle but they failed to
realize that in this healing God has come to
save them and be with them.
This is also true with us, God is
entering into our lives and changing who
we are. We see Gods mighty deeds, but
we fail to know that God is right beside us.
Do you know that we encounter and hear
God NOW? Even in the ordinary events
and circumstances of our daily lives, God is
present and saves us.
The encounter between Jesus and the
deaf-mute shows the entire relationship
between God and man. Jesus embodies
Gods saving power and ushers the new
kingdom of God as envisioned by Isaiah
(First Reading). The deaf-mute represents
our human need for healing. We seem to
think that salvation, like what happened to
the deaf-mute, is out of reach for many of
us and needs Gods intervention. God is our
Emmanuel, He comes to us in our daily
lives to save us in big and small experiences
that happen to us. What is necessary is for
us to open ourselves to a relationship with
Him. We encounter God in Jesus and allow
Him to heal our human weakness, illness,
oppression and depressions.
In all the big and small things that
happen around us, there is God with His
