Subject: Feasibility Report for Purchasing Computer for Plus SDN BHD

1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background
This report assesses two brands of computer that almost fulfill the minimum specifications
needed for Plus SDN BHD. After reviewing the background, Lenovo and Hewlett Packard
(HP) are the two brands that have suitable features required.
The Plus SDN BHD has been considering to increase number of computers due to increasing
number of customers each day. The company needs 30 sets of computers to provide
computing resources (computers, software, network access), provides a comfortable
atmosphere for both individual and group work and support the latest software that use in
modeling works. The increasing number of computers can increase the productivity of the
company, thus, makes it possible to meet the deadline of each project given.
1.2 Possible Alternatives
I have surveyed the two suitable computers brands that almost fulfill the minimum
specifications needed for our company. The two alternatives were chosen based on the hard
drive, processor, graphic card and random access memory (RAM).

2.0 Alternative Brands

2.1 Hard Drive
Hard disc is used to store data in the computers. High capacity of storage is very important in
any computers. In the meantime, the Lenovo hard disc drive (HDD) has higher latency,
longer read/write times, and supports fewer IOPs (input output operations per second)
compared to SSD. While the HPs (Solid State Drive, SDD) has lower latency, longer
read/write times, and supports more IOPs (input output operations per second) compared to
HDD.

Furthermore, Hard disk drives use more electricity to rotate the platters, generating heat and
noise. But, the HP did not need rotation in solid state drive this is because they use less power
and do not generate heat or noise. For defragmentation aspect, the performance of HDD
drives worsens due to fragmentation. Therefore, they need to be periodically defragmented.
Different with SSD, the drive performance is not impacted by fragmentation. So
defragmentation is not necessary.
Next, the comparison within the weight, the SSD drives are lighter than HDD drives because
they do not have the rotating disks, spindle and motor. Lastly, when dealing with vibration,
the moving parts of HDDs make them susceptible to crashes and damage due to vibration but,
SSD drives can withstand vibration up to 2000Hz, which is much more than HDD. In
conclusion the HP is better compare to Lenovo in hard disc specification.

2.2 Processor
The processor is the brain of any computer. Its job is to process tonnes of information in
milliseconds. The HP use Intel Core i5 that is positioning as mid-level (between the
mainstream i3 and Core 2, and the high-end Xeon and i7). The turbo boost used is Core i5
processors that support dynamic overclocking of the CPU (Turbo Boost) to enhance
performance. While the Lenovo uses Intels Core i3, positioning as low-end and do not
support turbo boost. So, HP brands have better performance that need in modelling works
compare to Lenovo.

2.3 Graphic Card

The function of a graphic card is process data into graphical form. It is very necessary by our
company to use software that demands high graphical performance such as AutoCAD and
Cathia. The HP CPU uses the NVIDIA 600m series which have a 4GB of memory with 2GB
of dedicated memory while the LENOVO have a 2GB of memory with a 1GB. So the HP
CPU is obviously a better choice because it will provide better performance.

2.4 Random Access Memory (RAM)

The function of a RAM (random access memory) card if to store temporary data. The higher
the RAM value, the higher the performance. The HP got a 4GB DDR3 SDRAM with
clockwork of 1600MHz and memory of 4GB while the Lenovo got a 2GB DDR3 SDRAM
with clockwork of 1600MHz and memory of 2GB which means the HP CPU got a better a
performance than the Lenovo CPU.
3.0 Conclusion and Recommendations
The CAD/CAM laboratory has reached the point to increase the number of computer due to
the increasing numbers of demands from the customers. So we should provide 30 set of
computers as well as to provide computing resources (computer, software, network access),
comfortable atmosphere and to support the latest software that used in modelling works. I

have analysed all the four specifications of both model/brand. The Lenovo does not fulfil the
minimum requirements needed by our company. Considering fulfilling the minimum
requirements, I recommend purchasing the HP brand. This is because the type of hard disk is
Solid State Drive (SSD). Next, the processor is Intels Core i5 and the type of graphic card is
NVIDIA 600m series. The HP got a 4GB DDR3 SDRAM with clockwork of 1600MHz and
memory of 4GB
