All the seeds produced by a plant do not grow into new plants because only ripe and healthy seeds
which get all the favourable conditions grow into plants.
Dispersal of seeds is necessary because seeds have to be spread out in a large enough area so that at least
some of the seeds will get suitable conditions and grow up into adult plants.
Grains are stored in a dry and well- ventilated room because Moulds grow easily in cold and damp
places.
We should not put out an electrical fire with water because water conducts electricity and it can give a

Ans The farmer protects the growing crops against diseases and harmful insects by spraying insecticides and

nutrients like proteins and vitamins .
Q14. What is pasteurization?
Ans. To heat for a certain duration of time and cool quickly is called pasteurization.
Q15. What are non-communicable diseases?
Ans. Diseases which do not spread from one person to another are known as non-communicable diseases.
Q16.What are the effects of vitamin D deficiency and how can it be prevented?
Ans. Deficiency of vitamin D causes rickets in which the bones become thin and brittle. It can be prevented by
including fish liver oil, eggs, milk and milk products in the diet and exposure to sunlight.
Q17. What is an epidemic?
Ans. When a large number of people living in an area become ill with the same disease at the same time it is
called an epidemic.
Q18 .What is pulses ?
Ans. Seeds having broken into two equal halves but leaving no oily marks on a paper during rubbing are called
pulses.
Q 19 What is cereals ?
Ans. The seeds which turn into broken pieces or powder are called cereals.
Q 20 What is oil seeds ?
Ans. The seeds releasing oil while breaking into pieces of making paste or powder are known as oil seeds.
Q 21 What is dicot seed ?
Ans. A seed that breaks into two equal halves is called a dicot seed.
Q 22. What is monocot seed ?
Ans. A seeds that does not get breaks into two equal halves is called a monocot seed.
Q 23. How many types of seeds are there ? Which are they?
Ans. There are two types of seed: (1) Monocot seeds and (2) Dicot seeds.
Q 24 .Which factors are necessary for a seed to germinate?
Ans. A seed requires air, water and heat to germinate.
Q 25. Which type of seed breaks into two halves?
Ans. Dicot seed breaks into two equal halves.
Q 26. What is a molecule?

water float on top and keep burning.
Ans. A seed needs good soil which is rich in nutrients. It needs air, warmth and water. Air is needed by the seed
to breathe. Warmth makes the seed active. Water softens the food and also the seed coat so that the baby plants
can break open the seed coat and can grow.
Q3. What are the stages of germination?
Ans. The stages of germination are:
1.The embryo root pushes through the seed coat and grow downwards into the soil.
2. The root start growing and the cotyledons are pulled upwards.
3. The baby plant called seedling start coming out of the cotyledons.
4. The stem grow longer and the first leaves start developing.
5. The leaves develop completely and the cotyledons fall off.
6. The process of germination is then complete.
Q4. Write a short note on how diseases spread through food.
Ans. Diseases are spread through food in many different ways.
Germs grow on garbage and dirt. Flies sit on these and carry the germs that stick to their legs. When
these flies sit on uncovered food, the germs are left on the food and contaminate it.
There are germs in the dust and soil. When this dust and soil is blown away by wind and settle on food,
the food gets contaminated.
When people suffering from intestinal disease do not wash their hands properly after going to toilet, the
germs are likely to be present on their hands and under the nails. When they touch food, the germs from
their hand get transferred and contaminate the food.
Any person eating contaminated food is likely to fall ill.
Q5. Give three ways to stop diseases from spreading.
Ans. Threeways to stop diseases from spreading are:
By washing your hands before eating to remove the dirt and germs on your hands.
By drinking pure and clean water.
By getting yourself vaccinated.
Q 6 .What are the properties of a liquid ?
Ans. Properties of a liquid are :1)Liquids have a definite volume, but no definite shape .
2) The force of attraction between the molecules of a liquid is little less.
3) There is some space between the molecules.
4) They can be poured.
5) They flow from higher level to lower level.
Q 7 . What precautions should you take when riding in a car?
Ans: Precautions to be taken when riding in a car are listed below.
