0 INTRODUCTION
In the name of Allah the most gracious and most merciful, the owner of all knowledge.
On this age of modern world, we were bless by the deep knowledge in science particularly in
physic contributed by the scientists before us, with so many invention and creation base on
such a vast number of concepts.
Most develop countries have a growing population of aging drivers whose ability to see
at night is significantly impaired. In darkness the probability for a severe accident is much
higher. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users and are four times more likely to be
fatally injured at night compared to day time. Data show that nearly 70% of pedestrian
fatalities happen at night, while night time driving only accounts for 20% of total traffic.
Even after decades of continuous improvement to road safety, it is estimated that each year
over 3000 pedestrians are killed at night in the United States alone.
In science,Automotive night vision system can be classified as either passive-far-infrared
(FIR-NVS) or active near-infrared (NIR-NVS). An automotive night vision system uses
a thermographic camera to increase a driver's perception and seeing distance in
darkness or poor weather beyond the reach of the vehicle's headlights. Such
systems are offered as optional equipment on certain premium vehicles. The first
introduction was in 2000 on Cadillac Deville.

3.0 CONTENT
3.1 What is automotive night vision?
The term automotive night vision refers to a number of systems that help
increase driver awareness when its dark out. These systems extend the
perception of the driver beyond the limited reach of the headlights through the
use of thermographic cameras, infrared lights, heads up displays, and other
technologies. Since automotive night vision can alert drivers to the presence of
potential hazards before they become visible, these systems can help prevent
accidents.
3.2 Car Night Vision System

Automotive night vision systems are broken into two basic categories, which are referred
to as active and passive. Active night vision systems uses infrared light sources to illuminate
the darkness, and passive systems rely on the thermal radiation that is emitted from cars,
animals, and other potential hazards. The systems both rely on infrared data, but each one has
its own benefits and drawbacks.
Active systems are more complex than passive systems because they use infrared light
sources. Since the infrared band falls outside the visible spectrum, these light sources dont
cause oncoming drivers to suffer from temporary night blindness like high beam headlights
can. That allows the infrared lights to illuminate objects that are significantly further away
than headlights are able to reach. Since infrared light isnt visible to the human eye, active
night vision systems use special cameras to relay the extra visual data. Some systems use
pulsed infrared lights, and others use a constant light source. These systems dont work very
well in adverse weather conditions, but they do provide high contrast images of vehicles,
animals, and even inanimate objects.
In contrast, passive systems dont use their own light sources, so they rely on
thermographic cameras to detect thermal radiation. This tends to work very well with animals
and other vehicles since they emit a lot of thermal radiation. However, passive systems have
trouble picking up inanimate objects that are about the same temperature as the surrounding
environment. The range of passive night vision tends to be significantly higher than the range
of active night vision, which is due to the limited power of the light sources used by the latter
2

systems. The image quality produced by the thermographic cameras also tends to be poor
when compared to active systems, and they dont work very well in warm weather

3.4 The importance of night vision

The statistics shows a significance number of crash between day and night. Statistics
shows that more than 4000 pedestrians are killed and more than tens of thousands are injured
when struck by a car every year. 70 percent of those impacts happen at night, where drivers
have limited visibility. Hence, it proved that the risk in traffic is much higher at night
compared during the day. However, not all of those cases happened due to the visibility
weakness.
Human vision is usually weaker at night than daytime. Thus, it will be hard for driver to
recognize any object on the road while driving. With that, the night vision system is created
to reduce the number of fatalities in traffic accidents in the decade between 2011 and 2020 by
half. It assists the driver by improving his facilities of perception, offering more time to take a
decision, and partly already nowadays but for sure in the future, by gradually taking a
steering control in order to increase safety. As a result, despite help to improve nighttime
visibility, it is also positively affect pedestrian safety.

3.4 Advantages and Disadvantages of Automotive Night Vision System

Tha automotive night vision system gives lots of advantages to people especially drivers.
First and for most, this system able to reduce accidents as the system can detect anything in
range of about 300 meters or 1000 feets which gives better overview of the driving situations.
This automotive night vision system also compatible which can be switched on or off without
affect driving style. Besides that, this system have easy and comprehensive installation that
can be used easily by the drivers.
However, this automotive night vision system do have its own disadvantages. This
system is such a modern and quality technology with complex equipments, hence it gives out
higher cost of process and not all citizens afford to buy car with automotive night vision
system since it is high in cost. Besides that, automotive night vision system might works

poorly in warmer weather conditions as it might interrupt heat sensing technology of the
thermal imaging system. In order to overcome this problem, a larger sensors are required.

4.0 CONCLUSION
Today in the 21st century we have come a long way in the development of night vision
technology, from the early 1940s. Night vision devices are basically designed for utmost
defensive purposes but the application within the scientific or the civilian range is often
prohibited by law. In present scenario the applications of night vision technology is very
essential in automotive field. It has become the need of the hour to have these kinds of hybrid
safety systems on the latest automobiles that could save the lives of many. Many such ideas
are yet to come and it is the duty of young budding engineers to think innovatively and work
upon developing such techniques one of which being the night vision sensors used in cars and
other automobiles that are proving to be a great success in the west and this should be
implemented immediately on the Indian terrain and reduce the catastrophic incidents that
occur on the roads especially during the night times.
The application of night vision already created by Allah S.W.T to His creation such as
cats and bats. These animals have the ability to see at night even without any light for their
own benefits. For example, bats use their night vision sight to hunt at night. It is responsible
for us to open our eyes towards everything that happen around us and use our mind to relate it
with human knowledge. Allah has stated in chapter 35 verse 27 :
See you not that Allh sends down water (rain) from the sky, and We produce therewith
fruits of varying colours, and among the mountains are streaks white and red, of varying
colours and (others) very black (35:27)
This verse shows the variety of Allah creation in this world. Each and every creation has
its own significance and play roles in the world.
