Part B (4 x 15 = 60 Marks)
21. The crank and connecting rod of a theoretical steam engine are 0.5 m and 2 m long
respectively. The crank makes 180 rpm in the clockwise direction. When it has turned 45 0
from the inner dead centre position, Determine a. velocity of pistons, b. angular velocity
of connecting rod, c. velocity at point E on the connecting rod 1.5 m from the gudgeon
pin, d. velocities of rubbing at the pins of the crank shaft, crank and cross head, when the
diameters of their pins are 5 cm, 6 cm, and 3 cm respectively.

22. Explain the method of obtaining the velocity and acceleration diagram using Kleins
construction for a slider crank mechanism
23. The thrust of a propeller shaft in a marine engine is taken up by a number of collars
integral with the shaft, which is 30 cm in diameter. The thrust on the shaft is 200 kN and
the speed is 75 rpm. Taking = 0.05, and assuming intensity of pressure as uniform and
equal to 300 kN/m2, find the external diameter of the collars and the number of collars
required, if the power lost in friction is not to exceed 16.2 kW.

24. A flywheel of mass 80 kg and having a radius of gyration 50 cm is mounted on a shaft,
rotating at 250 rpm. The shaft also carries a band brake of 32 cm diameter. Tight side of
the belt is fixed to the fulcrum of the lever and the slack side is connected to a pin, 5 cm
away from the fulcrum. The angle of contact is 2600, = 0.23. Calculate the time
required to bring the shaft to rest from its running condition when a force of 20 N is
applied at the end of the lever 35 cm long from the fulcrum. Neglect all losses and the
inertia of the brake drum.
25. An open belt drive connects two parallel shafts 4.5 m apart. The diameter of larger pulley
is 1.35 m and that of the smaller pulley is 0.9 m. The initial tension in the belt before
starting is 2100 N. the width of the belt is 12 cm and its thickness is 12 mm. The density
of the belt material is 1gm/cm3. Determine the maximum power transmitted and the
speed of the pulleys, taking centrifugal tension into account. Take = 0.3.

26. Draw the profile of a cam to give the following motion to a knife edged follower. a.
Outstroke during 600 of cam rotation. b. Dwell for the next 30 0 of cam rotation, c. Return
stroke during next 600 of cam rotation, and d. Dwell for the remaining 210 0 of cam
rotation. The stroke of the follower is 2 cm and the minimum radius of the cam is 5 cm.
The axis of the follower is offset by 2 cm from the axis of the cam shaft. The follower
moves with uniform velocity during both the outstroke and return stroke.
