3.1.3

When cementbased grout or bonding mixture is used, thoroughly soak the

concrete surface until absorption stops. Remove excess water before grouting
or bonding.

3.1.4

When epoxy grouts or adhesives are used, keep all surfaces dry before
application.

3.1.5

Before placement, treat surfaces from which grout is to be removed with an

approved varnish, wax, or oil.

3.2

Forms

3.2.1

Securely anchor forms or back braces to withstand the forces of the placement
of grout.

3.2.2

Provide tight forms (when forms are required) with tape sealed joints for
nonshrink cement based grout. Apply form oil for easy form release.

3.2.3

Provide watertight forms with chamfer strips where chamfer edge is required for
nonshrink epoxy grout. Line forms with polyethylene or apply heavy wax for easy
form release.

3.3

Mixing and Placement

3.3.1

If grouting is to be done when ambient temperatures are not between 4C and

32C or if other unusual or difficult conditions exist, the Contractor shall contact
PDVSA and the grout manufacturer for specific instructions.

3.3.2

Add to cementbased grouts the amount of water required for the desired
consistency.

3.3.3

Proceed with grout placement and ensure the filling of all surfaces and the
intimate contact of grouting materials with surfaces grouted. Place grout rapidly
and continuously to avoid cold joints under the baseplate. Grout from one side
to the other in one direction. Tamp or rod grout to eliminate voids.

3.3.4

For nonshrink grout, carefully follow manufacturers instructions for concrete

preparation, proportions, mixing, forming, depth of pour, pouring, and curing.

3.3.5

Do not retemper or remix stiffening grout.

3.4
3.4.1

Finishing
Trim back cementbased grout to the level indicated on the drawings after the
grout has reached an initial set. Slope surfaces away from baseplate. Cut back
protruding edges.

Epoxy grout cannot be trimmed after set. Finish top surfaces to proper slope prior
to initial set.

3.4.3

Apply finish coating over grout holes and vent holes after grout has set.

3.5

Curing

3.5.1

After placement, protect cementbased grout from premature drying, excessively

hot or cold temperatures, and mechanical injury. Maintain grout with minimal
moisture loss at relatively constant temperature for period necessary for hydration
of cement and hardening of grout.

3.5.2

Cure cementbased grout in hot weather, above 32C in accordance with one of
the methods described in ACI 305 R. Method of curing shall be approved by
PDVSA.

3.5.3

Cure epoxy grout in accordance with manufacturers instructions.

3.6

Shims and Wedges

Removal of shims and wedges is not required unless specified by equipment
manufacturer. Completely encase in grout all shims or wedges left in place.

3.7

Anchor Bolts and Pipe Sleeves

3.7.1

For anchor bolt sleeves and pipe sleeves requiring grout, clean all surfaces of oil,
grease, and other foreign substances. Grout anchor bolt sleeves with a flowable
grout and grout pipe sleeves with dry pack.

3.7.2

Where anchor bolts or pipe sleeves are to remain isolated, fill sleeves with a
pliable material such as silicone rubber moulding compound or other material, as
shown on PDVSAs drawings.

3.8

Bonding New Concrete to Existing Concrete

3.8.1

Apply the bonding mixture by working it into the surface with a stiff brush. Place
new concrete before bonding mixture dries out.

3.8.2

Apply epoxy adhesive in accordance with manufacturers instructions.

3.9

Testing
Test each type of grout at least once a week during grouting operations. Test
cementbased grout under COVENIN 484 (ASTM C109) and epoxy grout under
ASTM C579. Prepare the number of cubes for each type of grout and test for
required compressive strength according to the following schedule.

A.2
A.2.1

Use nonshrink cementbased grout unless epoxy grout is specified by equipment

vendor or PDVSA.
DESIGN DETAILS
Epoxy Grout
Differences in thermal coefficients of expansion between epoxy grout and
concrete create stresses at grout edges. Provide grout details that allow for
expansion joints, corner reinforcing, or added epoxy depth at corners to prevent
cracks.

A.2.2
A.2.2.1

High Temperatures
Use high temperature grout where BASE PLATE temperatures will be GREATER
THAN THOSE LISTED BELOW:
Cementbased grout
Epoxy grout

A.2.2.2
