TITLE

This study is focused on all first year pharmacy students composed of 9 male
respondents and 30 female respondents a total of 39 respondents of University of
Perpetual Help System-Dalta Calamba Campus to know their perspective on what
field of pharmacy they want to work after finishing the program.

II. INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy is a four-year college degree intended for

people who wants to have a career in the various fields of the pharmaceutical
industry. The study of pharmacy focuses on the identification, discovery, isolation,
synthesis, and formulation of biologically active compounds for clinical use.

The BS Pharmacy curriculum comprises of 72-units of CHED-mandated general

education courses, 30-units essential core subjects, and 90-units professional
pharmacy courses presented thru lectures and laboratory classes. The program
requires Thesis and Research Project in addition to the Practicum in the three
major pharmaceutical areas of internship, namely the community, hospital and
manufacturing.

Graduates of BS in Pharmacy are provided with a broad spectrum of training that

may lead to employment in a wide range of scientific fields, principally in higher
education institutions, community drug stores, hospitals, government agencies,
research establishments, public health and in the pharmaceutical industry. They
may also choose to continue with Medical education.

A pharmacist is a healthcare professional who is a expert on pharmaceutical drugs

and how they act to fight disease and improve the health of the patient.
Pharmacists are responsible for the implementation of drug therapy with the
intention of improving the quality of a patients life. Some examples of such
improvements include curing diseases, reducing or eliminating a patients
symptoms, slowing the process of a disease, and preventing disease. A
pharmacist works with patients and other healthcare professionals in order to
design, implement, and monitor a drug therapy plan specifically designed for that
patient. Not only do pharmacists advise doctors and patients on prescription
drugs, but they also provide information on the best medications that can be
purchased over the counter.

The most common goal of pharmacists is to move beyond their traditional role of
simply dispensing medication and deal with patients more directly and on a more
personal level. They strive to be a source of advice on medications for both healthcare professionals and patients. They also are dedicated to providing
individualized services to patients. Such services include consultations and
providing more understandable information about the side effects of the
medications that the patient is receiving.

Thats why we come up with this type of study to know the perspective of first year
student enrolled in BS Pharmacy program because there are many opportunities
waiting after graduating the program which became the main objective of this
study.

This study utilized the descriptive method of research gathered from a survey
conducted by the researchers. It was used to evaluate and analyze the mindsets
of first year Pharmacy students on what field they are interested after graduating.
It was also used to determine on what field of pharmacy they want to involve with.
And lastly, to know if gender is one of the factor affecting their choice of work after
finishing the program.

The importance of this study is to know the mind sets of the pharmacy students in
their first year in the program and is it possible that their perspectives will change
upon continuing the program and knowing a lot more of the possible opportunities
that awaits them after studying that will help the future researchers to determine if
the students change their perspectives as they pursue the curriculum.

The results shows that more students have chosen community pharmacy as their
preferred work setting after graduation which represents a total of 58.97% of the
respondents. Based on our study and surveys the respondents have chosen that
field because of the following reasons:

To build up their own drug store.

To personally serve patients by dispensing drugs and pharmacy

consultation.
Community pharmacist offers high salary.
Have interaction in new drugs released in the market.
Broader knowledge about drugs, how they should properly take and other
special consideration about the use of drug regimen.
Both gender have chosen the community pharmacy as their work setting
after graduation which serves as a positive sign that majority of the first
year pharmacy student Batch 2015-2016 of University of Perpetual Help Calamba Campus will choose the Community Pharmacy setting
Hospital Pharmacy and Manufacturing Pharmacy setting tied in he 2 nd
position with 20.51% from the total respondents. Based on their reasons,
they have chosen that field because they also thought of having a great
workplace setting. The following are their reasons why they have chosen
that field:

Manufacturing Pharmacy:

It is a challenging field
High salary and pays well
To learn and explore more on how medicines or drugs are manufactured

and distributed
Interested in research on new formulations of drugs

Hospital Pharmacy:

They want to be a staff in a hospital

Serve in-patient
Instead of being a nurse they have chosen to be a pharmacist because they

want to work in the hospital for a reason

They have family members who worked in hospitals

checking dosage and ensuring that medicines are correctly and safely
supplied and labelled to the patients.
Lastly only 1 of the 39 respondents have chosen the Academe field
because they thought that they would have a great opportunity to work after
graduation. Also, they want to impart their acquired knowledge on the new
aspiring Pharmacy students that they would handle and they also thought
that they would have a higher salary if they engaged in Academe field of
pharmacy to work after graduation.
Therefore, we come into conclusion that Community Pharmacy is the
field of choice of First year Pharmacy students. We, the researchers have

thought that their choice was influence by their undeveloped knowledge

about the different field of pharmacy because many people believed that
pharmacy graduates only work in typical drugstores or in the Community
Pharmacy. Another factor is that they are not much informed about the
possible opportunities for pharmacy student graduates like in the field of
hospital, manufacturing and academe pharmacy because that field of
pharmacy are extensively discussed in higher level in pharmacy. Otherwise,
any field of pharmacy is very promising nowadays because in every field a
pharmacist can learn different knowledge that may help them to be more
productive member of the profession. Also, Pharmacists play very important
roles in the everyday lives of many people. From dispensing medications to
advising consumers on the most effective products, pharmacists effect most
every citizens life every day.
IV. SUMMARY:
This study is focused on all first year pharmacy students composed of 9
male respondents and 30 female respondents a total of 39 respondents of
University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta Calamba Campus to know their
perspective on what field of pharmacy they want to work after finishing the
program.

We come up with this study because we want to know the perspective of all
the first year BS Pharmacy students of what field they want to be when they
finish the course and passed the board exam.
As we go through our study we came up with these results :
The results show that more students have chosen community pharmacy as
their preferred work setting after graduation which represents a total of
58.97% of the respondents. Based on our study and surveys the
respondents have chosen that field because of the following reasons all in
Community , Manufacturing , Hospital and Academe :

They want to build their own Drug Store

Because of High Salary or Income in Community Pharmacy

They want to know new drugs in the market

They want to work on the Hospital

They want to make different drugs of their own

They want to share their knowledge to students who wants to be a

Pharmacist
Therefore, we come into conclusion that Community Pharmacy is the field
of choice of First year Pharmacy students. We conclude that many of the
students are influenced by their environment and the people around them,
because many thought that the most common work a Pharmacist can have
is to only sell drugs in the drug stores.
We also thought that they have chosen Community Pharmacy because
they are only first year students, and if you are freshmen, different
opportunities are not yet being discussed or elaborate, and with that they

are not yet aware that many opportunities can come their way as they
pursue the course.
The importance of our study is to further know what is the mind state of the
freshmen student of they want to be when they enter the said course or
what they want to pursue in the future and what can be the factors that can
influenced them in choosing the said filed. It can also help the future
researchers to have an initial idea when they study this kind of research for
them to have ideas that they can probably use.

V. RECOMMENDATIONS:

The researchers recommend that this study should be further studied for
better results. Be patient enough in conducting interviews or surveys.

Future researchers should try to focus on a higher number of respondents.

As for this study, it is better if all year levels of BS-Pharmacy students of
University of Perpetual help-Calamba Campus will be interviewed or
surveyed to have a more accurate and reliable results because a wider
range of pharmacy knowledge of students in a higher level may be a factor
on hoe they will choose their desired field of work after finishing the
program.
This study would give an idea and serve it as guide in their future studies
which is related with this topic.
