2. How is poverty and environment linked according to Pope Francis? Can you separate the two?

Pope points out that the intimate relationship between the poor and
the fragility of the planet, the conviction that everything in the world
is connected, hence the two cannot be separated. Many of the poor
live in areas where in they are particularly affected by the
environmental problems, and their means of subsistence which are
dependent on natural resources such as agriculture, fishing and
forestry. Their access to social services as well as protection is very
limited. One particular problem is the access to quality water which
the poor are deprived of. It has been recognized that access to safedrinking water is basic and universal to human right for it is very
essential to our survival. Indeed our world has a grave debt to the
poor who lack access to safe-drinking water because they have been
deprived and denied of such right. It also shows that the gravest
effects of all attacks on the environment are suffered by the poorest
because most of the time they cannot access to the protection they
need the most. Poorest areas and countries are less capable of
adopting new modes for reducing the environmental impact because
of lack of means to have such.
Pope addresses solutions to the environmental problems such as
never giving up and that there will always be a hope that can always
redirect our steps that we can always do something to solve our
problems; cultivate our abilities in order to develop its potentials;
remind everyone of the duty to care for nature and protect her from
self-destruction; we must have concern for the environment and
sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering
commitment to resolve the problems of society; use technoscience to
improve quality of human life for this are wonderful products of a
God-given human creativity; show love with small gestures of mutual
care for it is also a civic and political which makes the world build
better; we need to regain conviction that we need one another and
that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world;
promote ecological education and apply it to self-first; stop being selfcentered and self-enclosed change the bad lifestyle; to have an
interdependent world to motivate us that solutions are proposed for
global perspective and not simply to defend the interest of few
countries; show special care for indigenous communities and their

cultural traditions; consider the interaction within natural systems

themselves and with social systems and the likes.
