They were anxious to provide new works for their programmes and commissioned prominent composers with works for their personal use, So Carl Maria von Weber associated himself with Heinrich Birmann of Munich, who was not only a great virtuoso on the clarinet, but an excellent musician. Therefore the works Weber wrote for him are not only show pieces, but contain some of his best music and cettainly belong to the best works written for the clarinet. The Grand Duo Concertant, written in 1816, was played in many cities by Barmann and Weber himself and its piano part too shows all the characteristics and the brilliance of Weber’s piano style at its best.
