A $1 minimum wage spike across the province

has numerous Strathmore businesses bracing themselves, cutting corners, and adjusting hours in a cashstrapped economy thats already plagued with layoffs.
The NDPs course of action, which raised the Alberta
minimum wage from $10.20 to $11.20 on Oct. 1, is
the first of future hikes, part of an an ambitious goal
of boosting the minimum wage to $15 by 2018. Although last weeks increase remained comparatively
low, local businesses have felt the financial impact,
are preparing to adjust their operations to balance
their financial load, and are questioning the timing
of the implementation when slumping oil prices contributed to thousands of job losses thus far.
It affects our bottom line immediately, said Peter Klironomos, owner of the Strathmore Station and
Pub.
With the economy being the way it is right now,
we have to be a bit more careful because we wont
be able to allocate all these extra hours to people.
Eventually what will happen is it gets passed on to
everybody else I suppose. Whether its NoFrills or a
restaurant, youre going to have to raise your prices,
otherwise you cant survive.
The Station employs 80 employees, out of which
40 to 50 have seen increases to their hourly wage.
While wait staff and liquor servers, who also receive
tips, previously received a minimum of $9.20 per
hour, the Station, in compliance with the provincial
governments decision, noticed payroll costs go up
when the wages increased more than a dollar to
$10.50 per hour. In chorus with the economic effects
of droughts in California and higher food costs specifically in the beef industry Klironomos argued the
increase shouldve been introduced more gradually.
Alberta has increased minimum wage based on the
cost of living for the past 10 years. While many businesses expected a three to four per cent increase, the
recent jump corresponds to a 10 per cent increase.
Despite employees in the food and beverage industry noticing a slight increase in their wages, with
much of their paycheque made up of tips, the modification is resulting in the opposite effect of its intent
elsewhere in Strathmore. As a store that employs a
number of high school students, the Canadian Tire
has only seen changes to the income of seven parttime high school students. However, if wages continue to spiral upwards, the stores owner Randy Orford
expects consequences to present themselves in the
number of people the store can employ with only so
much money being allocated to wages.
At this point the $11.20 has very little impact on
our business today, but $15, certainly, that would
have some substantial impact, said Orford.

Strathmore residents take initiative to

save Syrian family; met with disapproval
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Emotions ran high and discussions
turned vehement during a controversial
informational meeting last week, that
aimed to raise funds in hopes of sponsoring a Syrian family currently in a
refugee camp, and integrate them into
the Strathmore community.
Shortly after Shelby Dwyer launched
the fundraising group Strathmore for
Syria early last week, numerous concerns surrounding the initiatives title,
its message, and the focus of the group,
forced the Strathmore resident to
change the name to Hope for Syria. The
situation garnered national attention
and on Sept. 30 nearly 60 community
members met at the Hope Community
Covenant Church to gain more information, understand the process, and voice
their concerns.
There are people that dont necessarily support this initiative, said Dwyer.
Im not thinking about all the people
in the refugee camp. Im just thinking
we can make a difference for one family and welcome them here. I think if
we can all make a little more room in
our hearts and in our community and
come together we can make it a reality.
Hope for Syria wants to collaborate
with churches, individuals, and local
businesses to raise $15,000 to cover
start up costs of housing, furniture,
clothing, food and ESL lessons for the
first six months. However, Dwyer informed the crowd that she is hopeful
those items can be donated. By looking at a Blended Visa Office-Referred
program a private sponsorship of
refugees program the Canadian government matches the funds and covers
costs for the next six months. Dwyer
has already been in contact with the
Mennonite Central Committee who
have supplied a list of 20 United National vetted families in need of sponsorship. Anyone sponsoring a refugee
family under the blended visa program
is responsible for their social and emotional support for a year.
In our day to day lives we are all
busy and we all have stuff going on and
its easy to forget that there are people
across the world suffering, said Dwyer.
Ive received a lot of comments from
people saying we should take care of
our own, and we should. Im not saying that these initiatives are mutually

exclusive.
Yet, not everyone agreed with Dwyers approach. While many said her
heart was in the right place, they were
concerned about the threat of ISIS, job
loss and poverty in Canada, and a longterm plan. Some also questioned why
we wouldnt send resources to the refugee camps instead as had been done in
the past.
Its terrible over there, I totally believe everyone here had their hearts in
the right place, but I also believe that
Germany had their hearts in the right
place, Turkey had their hearts in the
right place, and look at the chaos thats
going on there right now, said Lynette
Halwa. Why are people so concerned
about bringing refugees into our country with everything thats going on in
the world right now, when we can provide food, and medical services. Thats
how we helped Indonesia with the tsunami, Japan when they had their earthquake, Haiti and so many other places.
Members of the Hope Community
Covenant Church in turn talked about
their desire to do both. Help with resources, but also bring a family to Canada to provide a long-term solution.
Emotions ran high and tears began to
flow when talking about issues in our
own back yard. With people reliant on
the food bank and struggling to make
ends meet, some community members
felt it was important to focus on our
community first. But when discussions
turned to religion and extremism, discussions became heated.
But the majority of the people in attendance were in support and eager to
help. Several community members who
are in constant interaction with refugees, immigrants, or minority groups
reminded the crowd that this family
wasnt after high profile jobs, will be
vetted by the Canadian government, is
going to extreme measures to save their
families, and can become viable members of the community.
In 2000 a young boy came into our
community to go to school, we were
fostering him in our home, said Denise Peterson. Hes Ethiopian. His father was killed, his mother sacrificed
everything to get him. He came into
our home and is a member of our family. He lives in this community, he has
a girlfriend, he is black, hes Muslim,
he goes to Hope Community Covenant
Church a lot, and hes a neurologist doing his PHD. I think his is a reality of

refuges in this country.

To date, over 200,000 people have
been killed in the four-and-a-half-yearlong Syrian civil war that escalated following anti-government protests.
Strathmore Senior High School Career Practitioner, Kaitrin McDonnell,
who was present at the meeting and a
good friend of Dwyers, announced the
commitment and support of students
at the high school through some of
the schools programs. While she said
she wasnt yet sure what that support
would look like, she referenced the
$10,000 that were raised by the students to send a girl in Kenya to school
for four years.
Dwyer encouraged anyone interested

Q: What happens if a death occurs

away from home?
A: Your local funeral home can assist you

regardless of where the death takes place,

and should be contacted as soon as possible.
They may require the assistance of a funeral
home nearer to the place of death.
Your funeral home will coordinate with
the distant funeral home and arrange for
embalming or cremation, and the transportation
of the deceased back home. It will still be
necessary for the next of kin to come into the
local funeral home to sign paperwork and
provide required information. As the distant
funeral home will have provided part of the
funeral services, your funeral home may deduct
some expenses as duplicate services.
In most cases, your funeral home will take
care of the costs for the distant funeral home,
and simply add those charges to the
final invoice.

Businesses worry about future

Continued from Page 1

What the government is trying to
achieve is not being achieved. All were
doing is raising the wage of a bunch of
high school kids that is just a part time
job. Theyre more worried about people
that are working full-time at that wage
and raising their income, but thats not
the case, thats not whats happening.
According to the Alberta Chamber
of Commerce, Strathmores reaction
is mirrored in communities across the
province. In fact, the chamber predicts
low-income earners will lose numerous
benefits when receiving $15 an hour.
Based on their projections, in bumping
someone from $10.20 to $15 an hour,
in a year the individual would earn an
additional $9,600. However, once the
wages reach the final phase in three
years time, employees will no longer be
eligible for the GST credit, the working
income tax benefit, the child tax benefit. As a result, single parents would
only receive $6,900 more while the federal government would receive nearly
$3,000 in reduced benefits and higher
taxes.
The other things thats missed in this
whole discussion is that it wont just
drive up the cost of labour for those
people who are sitting at minimum
wage, its likely to drive up wages in
general, said Ken Kobly, president
and CEO of the Alberta Chambers of
Commerce. Not all businesses can, but
some will increase their prices to offset
costs. I think there is a fair bit of worry
around the province, as to whats going
to happen when it hits its full phase
and is $15 an hour. I think their idea of
lifting people out of poverty is a good
idea, its an admirable thing to go for,
but there are different ways of doing
that.
The chamber conducted a study with
close to 1,600 responses from businesses in over 100 communities within
the province. The majority of responses

suggest that Alberta businesses expect

to reduce staff, increase prices, cut
down on hiring high school students,
and nine per cent responded by saying they would close their doors. Kobly
added he believes independent businesses in smaller communities tend to
be at a higher risk.
One of Strathmores independently
owned businesses, Rebel Sports, only
recently opened its doors in downtown
Strathmore. Having owned a business
in the food industry previously when
minimum wages jumped from $5.35 to
$8 and a staff of 26, owner Rhonda McCoomb hasnt felt the impact with her
current staff of six. However, with the
$15 on the horizon she admitted the
change is worrisome.
I think by 2018, thats really going to
close a lot of doors, said McCoombs.
I like to give my raises to people
that earn them. I understand $10.25
is really hard to live on, but its really
a fine line between finding a balance.
Whats more important, having businesses open or paying people more?
While the Alberta Chamber of Commerce said most businesses will likely
be able to absorb the added costs, they
expect future increases will leave a
sour taste in the mouths of independent small businesses such as locally
owned pizza places, bottle depots, and
daycares. The chamber is planning on
surveying their members again in a
month time to see how they have balanced off the increase to their labour
cost.

CRIME OF THE WEEK

Strathmore RCMP is currently attempting to

increase public awareness in ways to keep
property safe from crime. From September 1st to
September 30, Strathmore RCMP dealt with the
following actual crimes against property.
Theft Under $5000 22
Theft of Bicycle 2
Theft Under $5000 from MV 11
Theft Over $5000 3
Theft of Vehicles 22
Break and Enter(Residence and Business) 13
A good number of those incidents were the result
of leaving vehicle and residence doors unlocked.
As a result, Strathmore RCMP conducted vehicle
door checks on random streets throughout the
detachment territory. In September, a total of 23 of
100 vehicles were found with unlocked doors. This
amounts to 23% of vehicles that were increasingly
susceptible to crime of opportunity.
Strathmore RCMP would like to take the opportunity
to encourage residents to do their part in keeping
property safe. Keeping doors locked and valuables
out of sight is an important step in reducing crime in
our neighborhoods.
In October, Strathmore RCMP will conduct a
second set of vehicle door checks. Members are
hopeful that numbers will be more favourable, and
as a result, a lower total number of property crimes.
As always, the public is encouraged to report any
thefts or suspicious activity to the Strathmore
RCMP or local Crimestoppers.

Magill receives

award
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore High School teacher Christine Magill was recognized for her volunteerism work in East Africa with the
Me To We Educators Award at We Day in
Toronto last week.
In 2009 when she travelled to Rwanda for the first time, her perspective on
the world was changed by genocide survivors, which left her feeling obligated
to share their story with her students.
Its amazing, she said. Its so nice to
be able to speak from first hand and not
teaching information from a text book.
I get to tell stories about real people
Ive met and real experiences versus just
turn to this page and read this clip.
However in 2012, Magill was going
on her second trip with students but
she had a life-changing pedestrian accident which left her with chronic pain.
She said it had made her look at life differently and made the award that much
more special.
My life has changed since that accident because my health has been so
different, recalled Magill. Thats what is
so special about the award is that for me
the last three years I had so much adversity in my own life. Im always worried

to be because of my limitations and to

realize that Im still making an impact
on students and still able to make a difference is really exciting.
Magill, who has spearheaded the Me
to We program at the high school, had
most recently fundraised to send a girl
in Kenya to high school while taking
her students to the country to get her
initiative recognized.
I think it was a lot about the stuff
Ive done as an educator and the stuff I
do outside of school as well with other
charitable organizations, said Magill.
The recognition was pretty much for
all of the stuff Ive done related to East
Africa and lots of fundraisers. Weve
fundraised for a student and send her
(Vivian) to high school in Kenya last
year, one of classroom building projects,
(and) weve done a bunch of student
leadership volunteer trips to Kenya.
She is involved with the Rwanda
Community Association in Calgary and
has travelled to Rwanda to speak about
genocide education.
Magill always had an interest in volunteer work and after a trip to Ghana, she
shared her experience with her Social
Studies class in Strathmore. As a result,
one of her senior students was inspired
to visit Africa during the summer and
also volunteer her time.
It was a result of my course, said
Magill. It was pretty cool to see her
inspired and that kind of inspired me
to want to do more. I decided to try to
organize a trip for students to Kenya.
While I was in the process of organizing
that trip, I had the opportunity to sign
up to go to Rwanda to learn about genocide. We started teaching it in our curriculum and I really didnt know very
much.

National Sarcastic Awareness Month October is a month for us to pause and be aware
of the growing trend of sarcasm. Really. Its become an epidemic and if were not careful,
were going to have a situation on our hands that we wont be able to control.
Well end up with squirrels in charge.
On second thought, maybe thats not much worse than what weve got now.

Democratic
Advancement Party
of Canada
First off we should be
realistic that the economic situation will take
some time to rebound. Notwithstanding some decisions and steps will be
taken to facilitate the turnaround. Oil
and Gas is a major industry for Alberta
and Canada and this industry affects
other industries too that are in the riding. The slowdown is caused primarily by the international oil prices that
Canada does not have full control over.
We do have control over other things
and that is what we should focus on.
Infrastructure is a key item for the
riding and now would the best time to
invest in infrastructure. This would be
beneficial two ways as first off it would
create jobs. These jobs would result, as
the need is the repair and maintenance
of current infrastructure, and also development of new infrastructure projects that are critically needed. Therefore these would result in jobs and the
riding would see tangible results of infrastructure work that is needed in the
riding.
Fiscal policy would be another
item. In economic times, taxation and
wages are key issues. The tax structure

these uncertain times is
reassurance from all levels of government that
they have not been forgotten and will
not be taken advantage of. The idea of
raising taxes on individuals and businesses while so many are struggling to
make ends meet is counterproductive
and harmful.
Once Im elected to represent Bow
River I will push for a commitment
from whichever party ends up leading the country for a moratorium on
tax rate changes for at least two years.
With the current years budget finally
balanced by the Conservatives the
country has an opportunity to look at
all government departments and agencies for cost savings and increasing efficiencies. I would advocate for each

that is beneficial to small businesses,

which are a majority of business in the
riding, would create and sustain the
economy to get through this current
situation. The tax should be such that
is the least burden in small business.
The higher tax should be on major corporations that make lots of money and
the rich elites, not the average taxpayer
and small business that consists of the
hard working families and individuals
in the riding. In addition the minimum
wage will need to be addressed which
during a downturn is not the best time
to implement an increase. Talking to
constituents in riding, this is not really welcome by the constituents, and
also economically for businesses at this
time the increase is also not beneficial.
These are two items that I would address so the riding can get back on
track and control things they we are
able to.
These are the high level issues that
would address policy concerns that
span the riding. There would be more
secondary detail issues to tackle after
these primary issues are addressed.
Just to be clear we are conservative

makes no sense economically at the
moment.

and every department to reduce their

overall budget by 10 per cent each year
for two years through a combination
of wage reductions for employees and
working with suppliers to reduce the
rates charged to the government for
equipment and services.
I know this is an achievable target
and can be done with a minimum of
disruption to services to Canadians because Ive experienced it first hand in
my work place as we were significantly
impacted by the oil price plunge over
the last year. It will not be easy and
some tough decisions will be required,
but as stewards of Canadians tax dollars
the federal government needs to show
leadership in this. The entire amount of
savings realized by this strategy could
then be invested in infrastructure and
social programs equitably across Canada. That investment would create work
for local businesses and provide assistance to families in Bow River and all
other ridings in Canada.

and the increased economic activity enabled the
borrowing agencies to quickly repay the loans
which were then retired, so that the injection of
capital was non-inflationary. That construction
activity touched off the longest-lasting economic
boom in Canadian history. And when the loans
were repaid, the permanent infrastructure was
still there. Today, its crumbling, and the only solution that other Parties offer is taxing you to rebuild it. Its time for a new infrastructure initiative
one that works and doesnt rely on increasing
your tax burden.
Last but not least, the CHP is also in favour of
a simpler taxation system in which we dont punish people for earning income or making profits.
We want to put Canadians in charge of the tax
they pay by shifting taxation towards consumption instead of production. In other words, we
promote higher progressive national retail sales
tax, thereby making it possible to go to (much)
lower income tax rates. We need to increase productivity of our Canadian industry, create jobs
here in Canada, and a better tax system is one of
the ways to do that.

Christian Heritage Party (CHP

Canada)
The CHP would put Canada
back to work with a nationwide infrastructure stimulus package that
would fix our cities, our highways
and our bridges. The CHP proposes a limited and targeted application of Quantitive Easing to specifically finance infrastructure
projects and boost the economy, without incurring massive commercial debt (T-bills) with its associated commercial interest costs that now consume a huge and increasing portion of the taxes
Canadians pay to Ottawa.
Jobs stimulate the economy. The CHP would revive the plan that was successfully used in Canada
to combat unemployment after the Second World
War. The Bank of Canada was ordered to make
interest-free loans (basically a form of Quantitive
Easing) to provinces, municipalities and cities for
infrastructure projects: roads, highways, bridges,
rail lines, ports today we could include hospitals, urban and inter-urban passenger rail lines,

As the MP for the riding of Bow River, I will
work with the NDP government to ensure big,
profitable corporations pay their fair share of taxes. In 2000, the corporate tax was 28 per cent.
Today, it is 15 per cent. According to the Parliamentary Budget Office, the cuts to corporate taxes between 2006 and 2015 has cost Canada $12
billion annually.
Small and medium businesses create most of
the jobs in Canada. The NDP will decrease small/
medium business taxes from 11 to nine per cent.
We will also create an innovation tax credit for
business to invest in machinery, equipment and
property used in innovation-boosting R&D, saving Canadian manufacturers making these investments approximately $40 million each year. We
will also extend the accelerated capital cost allowance for manufacturing and processing machinery and equipment.
The Government has said over and over again
cutting corporate taxes will stimulate business
and boost economic growth. It appears the opposite is the case.

A recent Ipsos poll commissioned by Global News found that

According to Statistics Canada, Corporate Canada has $680 billion of dead money. The numbers
show the amount has increased $44 billion since
the same time last year. Since 2005, the amount of
dead money has more than doubled.
In a 2014 report by the International Monetary
Fund (IMF), Canadas amount of dead money is
the fastest growing of any G7 country.
Canadian firms may be missing on productive investing possibilities, the IMF said. Thats

Bow River candidates tackle

questions at political forum
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Canadas $600 billion national debt crisis, a
wounded economy, the countrys obligations toward crime and human rights issues, and fundamental values were at the forefront of last weeks
Bow River Riding Candidate Forum that provided
a platform for several hopeful candidates, that are
vying to be the federal representative for the riding, to impress dozens of local voters.
Five out of the seven candidates, representing
various political parties and ideologies, addressed
issues of rural, regional, and national concern with
the hopes of gaining the votes of nearly 60 local
residents who gathered at the Strathmore Civic
Centre on Oct. 1.
Democratic Advancement Party of Canada Fahed
Khalid, Independent Andrew Kucy, Liberal William
MacDonald Alexander, NDP Lynn MacWilliam, and
Conservative Martin Shield addressed eight questions generated through public input. The questions demanded answers regarding: the candidates
personal values; issues important to the individuals
and their proposed solutions; CPP and EI contributions and hiking payroll tax to create jobs; issues
relating to federal jurisdictions and how the riding
will be represented; handling the Syria refugee crisis; reserve conditions and the situation of missing
and murdered aboriginal women; advice for the
next prime minister; and an issue the candidate
feels deserves a free vote.
I think it went really well, said Anouk Roorda,
who came from Calgary to support her brother
William Alexander.
All the candidates answered the questions they
needed to, and it was helpful for me to understand
rural issues a little bit better. The candidates really
honed in on rural issues and regional issues.
While some residents were pleased with the information provided and showed up to see how the
candidates conduct themselves in person for when
polling booths open in a couple weeks, other were
disappointed with the responses, even going as far
as to call the candidates weak.
And although some minds were already made
up before the forum took place, others were
pleasantly surprised by the candidates responses,
even resulting in a few residents announcing they
changed their vote.
Were blessed in a sense to have these committed articulate thoughtful individuals in our midst,
said Herb McLane, general manager of the Strathmore and District Agricultural society who emceed
the event.
A forum is a place where ideas and views may
be exchanged. We expect, even demand, good representation and good governance. We expect our
representatives to represent that of which is in the
public interest and without corruption. On Oct. 19
following one of the longest campaigns in our history we have the right, and I would add obligation, to exercise our electoral franchise and elect
the next government of Canada. What an awesome
privilege, and what an opportunity, that is.
When asked what values each candidate would
bring to the role of member of Parliament, Kucy,
MacWilliam and Alexander also talked about honesty, openness, or living by the golden rule. In contrast, Shields felt his values were affiliated strongly
with the quality of life in the constituency. While

Khalid on the other hand valued strong family

units within the riding, he valued boldness, the
ability to think outside of the box, and courage
above all else.
However, it wasnt until the candidates were
asked to comment on an issu they felt was of a
real concern that the candidates different positions were exposed. Sticking with his partys principles, Alexander felt the economy was the biggest
issue facing the election. Referring to a technical
recession, he added the focus needs to be shed on
market access of resources, the pipelines, rail and
green infrastructure, irrigation, and agriculture.
MacWilliam was adamant about climate change
and the effects on the economy, businesses, and
Canadas global presence. Shields said families
have been muted and are required to jumpstart
the economy. By ensuring families walk away with
more money in their pockets, Shields said the
more money they will invest. Although Khalid was
concerned about a number of issues, he singled
out agriculture and resources. As an Independent,
Kucy took issue with the lack of accountability of
the people currently in office.
The candidates were also asked about how they
felt about CPP and EI contributions for Canadian
workers and employers. While most agreed that
CPP and EI was important as a safety net when
going through hard times, Shields showed a strong
opposition against the Payroll Tax.
Its a tax that is really hard on the economy in
the sense of the smaller businesses, Shields said.
If the government were to reduce it, it allows
small businesses to reinvest in their company.
When small businesses reinvest in their company
they hire more people. It makes the community
stronger when the economy is stronger.
However, MacWilliam felt the tax was an investment in ones future, yet the Employment Insurance was in need of some fixing. She emphasized
the importance of investing in the CPP, money
which she said comes back once one retires.
We have to fix EI, she said. The money you
put in there is for you when you go through hard
times. The way the economies go today, we have
lots of hills, we have a lot of valleys, and that money is really important.
Child care and the child tax benefits were also a
topic of discussion between Lynn MacWilliam and
Fahed Khalid when asked about representing the
riding on a specific issue in Ottawa. And when the
question was posed about the latest controversial
topic of Syrian refugees and Canadas involvement,
the candidates all expressed the need for a balanced and safe approach for refugees in need, not
just those from Syria. Similarly, all candidates felt
Canada had not done enough to support their First
Nations people, especially in the investigation of
missing and murdered aboriginal women.
This election is a crossroads for Canada, said
Fahed Khalid. This is a very critical election. Dont
vote for just a brand, or a personality thats popular. Vote for someone that you know is going to
get the job done. Thats going to stand up and take
action, made decisions, and work with you.
The Bow River Riding Candidate Forum was the
product of the collaboration between the Town of
Strathmore, the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society, Rockys Bakery, and the Strathmore
Times.
The federal election was called for Oct. 19.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Time to stand up and vote!

To the Editor
Last Thursday was the first time I had the opportunity to meet five of the seven candidates running
to represent the riding of Bow River. The evening renewed my hope in Canadas future. These individuals
have chosen to step up to what will surely be a challenging task given the divisive nature of this election
campaign and what we are told is a disengaged electorate. It is particularly noteworthy that three young
men are willing to take action to support inspiring
beliefs in the future of this country given that they
are part of a demographic that is often portrayed as
apathetic.
A lot of information and promises are provided via
mainstream and social media in hopes of securing
voter commitment or disengagement (if one is honest). Prior to attending the forum, I believed I had
made a decision on whom Id be voting for.
After listening to and speaking with the candidates,
I changed my mind. Historically, people voted on individuals to best represent their concerns. More recently, voters are given the choice of which brand of
politics they prefer. Currently Bow River constituents
have choices outside of the brands. I believe in a Canada where issues are openly discussed and debated
in the House of Commons, thus providing Canadians
with insight into national matters that impact their
lives.

To the undecided, I recommend taking time in the

short period that remains before Oct. 19 to learn more
about the people running here. They possess business
experience, some work(ed) in the oil & gas sector,
and their experiences provide good insights for representing this riding. I was impressed by the values they
spoke of and their thoughtful responses to questions
that were posed.
To the unengaged, current poll projections show
the race is extremely close. Political pundits believe
that Canada is on a precipice and change may or may
not occur. Because of that this election is particularly
significant for this countrys future increasing the importance of every voter and every vote. If you think
your vote doesnt count, you are wrong because if
everyone voted, phenomenal possibilities become
available.
Hearing candidates respond to questions from the
public, meeting them in person and/or engaging in a
discussion with them provide insights or impressions
of how that individual will represent your concerns
and interests in Ottawa. Two recent forums provided
me with those opportunities changing my perspective. My sincere thanks to the organizers of Candidates Forum.
Im voting on Oct. 19. Will you?

Compensation available to landowners

and farmers for wetland restoration
DUCKS UNLIMITED CANADA

Drained sloughs could be a
cash cow for farmers and landowners when they restore these
wetland areas with Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC).
And there couldnt be a better time.
DUC is ramping up its presence and activity in Alberta in
response to increased priority
given to mitigating the effects of
drought and flood conditions.
Recently, the conservation
organization and leader in wetland restoration received additional funding from the Government of Albertas Watershed
Resiliency and Restoration Program to restore more wetlands
in Alberta.
As a result, DUC opened a
new office in Strathmore and
added more field and GIS technical staff to their wetland restoration team to expand their
reach.
Two DUC wetland restoration

programs best suited to farmers and landowners, particularly those who use their land
for grazing and/or cropping, are
the 10-year lease program and
the Revolving Land Purchase
(RLP) program.
The 10-year lease program
provides compensation to landowners based on current fair
market value for the restored
wetland area. DUC pays for all
wetland restoration costs associated with a 10-year lease, while
allowing the landowner to manage the restored area which
may include haying or grazing.
Alternatively, the RLP program involves the purchase of
land from landowners, restoration of wetland and upland
habitat, and registration of a
conservation easement on the
land title. The land is then sold
back to the local agricultural
community with the assurance
that valuable wetland function
and natural ecosystems will be
maintained for long-term bene-

fit. Proceeds of the land sale are

then used to fund more restoration projects by DUC.
Wetlands, as proven by research, have the ability to store
water, slow the release of water
into surrounding streams and
rivers, filter excess pollutants
into watersheds, and recharge
groundwater. They also serve as
a water source for livestock and
provide habitat for wildlife and
waterfowl.
Landowners and farmers who
have engaged in either DUC
program report several benefits,
and use them as part of their
long-term land management
strategies. They are also able
to accrue a higher return on investment on land that was formerly viewed as unproductive.
Anyone interested in DUCs
wetland restoration programs
should contact their area conservation program specialist by
calling 1-866-479-3825 or by email
(restoremywetlands-ab@

Pastor at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Standard

Nazareth Lutheran Church in Standard was thrilled to host
its first ever Blessing of the Beasts on Oct. 4th, the Feast
Day of St. Francis of Assis. St. Francis was a lover of Gods
creation, preaching sermons to the birds and a gentler of
wolves. In attendance were several dogs, as well as two
very adorable black kittens brought by Alexis Klemmensen.
Troy, Erik, and Reid Semeniuk patiently waited outside the
church for a blessing with their border collie Hurley, who
is still learning his manners! The children were excited to
bring their pets to church and have Pastor Dyanna offer a
blessing on them. Pastor Dyannas own dog, a Chihuahua
named Sadie, served as Assistant Minister. Laughter rung
out in the church as Pastor Dyanna attempted to corral
Darrell and Connie Larsens dog Belle in an effort to offer
a blessing. Belle was too interested in corralling her! Pastor Dyanna shared several stories of St. Francis offering his
own blessing to the animals he met, reinforcing the Biblical
truth that God tells us to love each other and to love creation. The congregation enthusiastically sang such hymns
as All Things Bright and Beautiful and On Eagles Wings
and heard the story of creation from Genesis. It was a lovely morning, and not one that the congregation and friends
of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Standard will soon forget!

Anytime Fitness in Strathmore. The first
visit was such a positive experience.
They greet you with a positive attitude,
and give you a complete tour of the gym
facility. Initially, I only signed up for a
six-month membership, but with the
positive experience created by the staff, I
extended my membership. My trainer took
me on an orientation, and her knowledge
was exceptional, which encouraged me
to continue with her as my fitness trainer
for 12 sessions. Anytime Fitness has been
a great fitness club to be a part of and
provides great classes that a member
can participate in each week; and I will
continue to recommend this club to
anyone looking for a gym to join.

Compost initiative
gives back to
community
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

H&H Huxteds composting pilot project has
come a long way since the proposal was first
brought before a supportive but slightly sceptical council last May, asking for three extra townowned acres to the South of the recycle yard.
Today, only a year later, Strathmore is already
reaping the rewards. The land now contains several large heaps of compost materials already
proving valuable in one of Huxteds latest initiatives, which produced 200 lbs of vegetables that
were recently donated to the Wheatland County
Food Bank.
Were always happy to get fresh veggies,
said Val, a volunteer with the Wheatland County
Food Bank, who asked not to have her last name
mentioned.
Theyve always been a great community supporter. Ive known them for years and we get lots
of support for everybody in the community. Its
nice to see that they took that initiative.
The donation was equivalent to approximately
20 hampers, which represents only a small percentage of hampers supplied to the community
that often requires over 400 hampers a week.
With the help of the nutrient-rich compost created from leaves, wood, mulch, food scraps,
paper, and grass H&H Huxted managed to
grow potatoes, beets, onions, corn, and carrots
in a flower bed right in middle of the recycle
yard.
The production became a reality after the project received the green light just over a year ago.
On June 4, 2014, with the support of the Alberta Environment, town council gave Huxted the
thumbs up to proceed with a three-year composting pilot project. The class two site in Strathmore, meant vegetative matter, such as yard material, garden waste, and trees, could be turned
into 100 per cent organic compost.
Im really excited about where this is heading, said Councillor Bob Sobol.
Were going to have our backyard compost,
our grasses, being composted instead of going
to the landfill. And at the end of the day this
is whats going to make a difference financially
for us. Thats heavy weight we send to the landfill every day in the summer time and Id much
rather see that composted and used and reused.
To ensure the projects success, Huxted purchased a wood chipper with the capacity to
handle pallets, trees and fences, and enlisted the
expertise of his operations manager Bruce Hempel, who came ready to hit the ground running
with five years of composting experience with
Agricore.
The piles currently on the site reach up to 71
degrees Celsius before being turned. The fin-

ished organic material, contains traces of iron,

copper, zinc, manganese, and boron which contribute to plant growth. The material also acts
similar to a sponge in soaking up water, and in
turn requires less watering in the summer. The
product can then be used as a fertilizer substitute on green spaces, parks, gardens, fields, and
playgrounds.
While Colin Huxted, owner of H&H Huxted,
made good on last years promise to have compost product available this year, his ideas for
greener initiatives are far from accomplished.
Dad wants to green it up, he wants it so its
not just a waste disposal, said Cody Huxted, the
son of Colin Huxted.
Next year were going to plant more trees.
Were just trying to show how it turned the compost into beautiful things. Its not pretty stuff that
comes here. We were trying to make it less of
an eyesore. By next year, this time, itll be a lot
of big changes again. Itll be a whole different
deal, a whole different place to make everything
greener and cleaner.
Huxted jumped through various hoops with
Alberta Environment to turn the site into class
one before the Alberta 55 Plus Summer games.
As a class one site, which Huxted had originally
intended after the pilot projects three years were
complete, the project would accept sludge from
water treatment plants and organics such as food
scraps which in turn saves more money for the
town.
His rates of composting are above the norm
above whats required, Colin is just doing an excellent job, Sobol said.
This is just very early and its a pretty foreign concept to us. A lot more discussion will
take place in the future, weve certainly supported the concept, that why council authorized
the use of some of our land for the composting
project. Its a partnership that we have with the
gentleman whos very interested in where were
going in the community in terms of composting
and the environment. Its a win-win situation for
everyone involved in this.

Hope Bridges celebrates

10 years
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

In commemoration of
10 ardent years, the Hope
Bridges Society is bringing
back numerous artists and
various highlights featured
at galas over the past decade,
during this years milestone
celebration.
Local artists are collaborating with the Rosebud School
of Arts, Strathmore Theatre
Players, and other guests to
create an entertaining night
filled with music, laughter,
and the spoken word.
While the event has always
provided an opportunity to
showcase local art and join
in the celebration of artistic expression, the society
also introduced their diverse
workshops - which include
drumming, Sing Your High
Note, and music therapy several years ago.
The gala is a celebration of Hope Bridges, said
Wanda Reinholdt, program
coordinator with the Hope
Bridges Society. Local and
regional artists come together to celebrate art and
the connection that it creates
between people. The focus is
not fundraising the focus is
celebration.

The Hope Bridges Society a community-based,

not-for-profit organization
emerged from Project Hope,
a therapeutic program offered to students in the Golden Hills School Division.
With few opportunities in
Strathmore and Wheatland
County for the students once
they graduated from high
school, several community
members created the Hope
Bridges Society in 2005, to
offer art classes and workshops to adults.
Since its initial creation, the
society has seen the number
of participants increase significantly and their presence
in the community flourish.
As this year marks the societys 10th anniversary, guests
are encouraged to dress up
for the occasion.
Your finest and somebody
elses finest will be different,
said Reinholdt. We just want
to encourage people to dress
up in their finest whatever
that looks like.
The Artists Among us Fall
Gala will take place at the
Hope Covenant Church on
Oct. 22. Doors open at 6:30
p.m. and performance starts
at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 per
person and only available for
purchase at the door.

Strathmore musician
awarded high honour
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

At 24 years old, Timothy Steeves
biggest accomplishment wasnt a solo
debut with the Calgary Philharmonic
Orchestra, his performance at Carnegie Hall in New York, his numerous
competition wins, and it wasnt even
last years involvement in the worldpremier recording of Darius Milhauds
LOrestie dEschyle, which received a
Grammy nomination for best opera recording.
A couple weeks ago, Steeves boarded the plane in Toronto to fly back to
Houston, Texas where the dexterous
musician is currently a doctoral student
at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice
University in his second year. Accompanying him on the flight was the rare
and famed 1871 Vuillaume Violin that
was awarded to the young musician
for the next three years by the Canada
Council at the 2015 Instrument Competition on Sept. 25 a prized possession
valued at $260,000.
Being a winner of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank Competition has been a dream of mine for
several years, because its an incredible opportunity for young musicians,
Steeves said. Ive been playing it exclusively the last week and a half. Compared to my instrument its much more
projecting, its a more vibrant ringing
instrument, it has a wider pallet of
sound, and what Im able to do with
it is much bigger than the instrument I
currently own.
Just like his sister and two brothers, who are also musically gifted,
the Strathmore-raised Steeves began
playing the violin at the Kodaly music classes at Mount Royal University
Conservatory at the young age of three.
However, his passion for music wasnt
limited to the violin. Throughout his
years, Steeves sang in childrens choirs,
played the clarinet in school bands,
performed in orchestras, studied theory in piano and violin, composed, and

received a Performance Diploma from

the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto for piano.
His love of and understanding of
music went well beyond his years, and
his love of music is profound, said Carolyn Steeves, Timothys mother.
He has an amazing musical talent but more than that he works very
hard at his craft. We were thrilled when
Timothy made the final of the Canada
Council Music Instrument Bank Competition, ecstatic when he made the
Top 16, and over the moon that he
has earned the privilege of playing the
1871 Vuillaume Violin.
Steeves father, Bruce, who echoed
the comments, knows his son is determined to achieve a challenging
task in becoming a professional musician. And Steeves is well on his way.
Not even a quarter-of-a-century old,
he has performed at Carnegie Hall in
New York, at the Salzburger Festspiele,
and the Kennedy Centre in Washington, DC. Despite his involvement in the
Schleswig-Holstein, Banff and Aspen
Festival Orchestras, he is also a founding member of the music ensemble
Latitude 49 based in Chicago. Steeves
was also the co-concertmaster of the
National Repertory Orchestra for two
complete seasons.
While he usually plays a modern
French Canadian violin, a week of intense competition placed him among
21 other outstanding cellists and violinists that each took home an exceptional
instrument from the Canada Councils
collection valued at $41 million.
To be among the selected was an incredible honour for me, Steeves said.
I feel much more liberated playing this
instrument. Its been a bit of a learning
curve because there are certain things
that it demands from the player, in how
its approached and how its treated.
The instrument in his possession,
which he says is unparalleled to the
instruments hes played in the past, is
a copy of the 1716 Antonio Stradivari,
known as the Messiah Stradivari, which

or a chapter to his novel, The Politics of

Being Dead - a decade-long project that
was recently put to rest.
Higgins began writing and researching his book over 10 years ago at the
young age of 20. As a teenager, his writing skills were focused on lyrics, but it
wasnt until he followed his dads footsteps of becoming a tradesman that he
embarked on writing his first novel; a
book whose premise had been on his
mind for some time.
Then, several weeks ago, the Strathmore-based author finally clutched the
hard copy of his magnum opus for the
first time.
Ive always wanted to write a book,
since I was a kid, Higgins said.
I had numerous attempts at writing
something here or there, but never finished anything when I was younger. I
was working at a machine shop, and I

Juno-nominated musician John Wort
Hannam will perform in Rosebuds Opera House, Oct. 18, to celebrate the release of his sixth CD, Love Lives On.
The album includes Man of God,
which is about Indian residential
schools and was performed at the Truth
and Reconciliation Commission closing
ceremonies in Ottawa this June.
Love Lives On is Hannams first album
since he became a father three years
ago.
I find that I get a lot of inspiration
from my son on this last record ... this
record, more than any other, gives an
insight into me as a person, and not just
me as a songwriter, he said. For the
first time, Ive touched on things like
trying to find a balance ... how do I keep
this little career of mine going, and pay
my mortgage, but also be around and
watch my son grow up?
With lyrics like I roll, roll, roll down

and a song in my heart and you on my
mind, and I love you, my kid. Youre
getting so big but its me who has
grown, the opening track Roll, Roll,
Roll describes that search for balance.
Those values are also reflected in title
song. Hannam started writing it after he
and his son Charlie went walking and
came to a freshly-laid cement sidewalk.
It was way too good to pass up, he
said. We grabbed a stick and I held
Charlies hand and we wrote Charlie
and Dad in the cement.
Then he began asking himself, Why
do we do that? Why do we want to put
our handprint in cement or carve our
name in a picnic table? Love of a place
and love of a home and love of family
and people will live on long after were
here.
Hannam and his four-piece band
Hannam on guitar, Scott Duncan on fiddle, Jason Valleau on upright bass, and
Bob Hamilton on lap steel and pedal
steel will perform all 11 songs from
Love Lives On, as well as favorites from
previous albums.
Church of the Long Grass, an earlier
song that Hannam wrote after sitting on
a horse overlooking a valley, and telling
his friend, this is my sanctuary ... if I
belong to any church, its the church of
the long grass, is one song that seems
to be a song that gets requested a lot,
he said.
Hannam invites everyone to make the
trip to Rosebud for the concert in Rosebuds Opera House, Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2
p.m. Buy tickets at rosebudtheatre.com

dont remember what gave me the inspiration, but somehow I kind of came
up with these ideas.
The 32-year-old father of two originally created the main character, Jack
Harnette, to reflect the ideal version of
himself. Referring to his younger self as
shy and anti-social, Higgins moulded
Jack to be confident, good with women,
outgoing, yet still very much the everyman. However, it wasnt long after the
notebooks started filling up with ink,
that Higgins met his future wife and his
life began to change. As the years wore
on, he realized that the character he had
started out wanting to become, became
less his hero and more a subject of pity.
The character is a 36-year-old guy,
divorced, and I wouldnt say cynical towards relationships, but hes not good
with them, he said.

SAY awarded grant for disc

golf promotion
STRATHMORE ASSEMBLY OF
YOUTH

We have big news!
The Strathmore Assembly of Youth
(SAY), in conjunction with the Town
of Strathmore, has received a $10,000
grant from the Makadiff Sports Foundation (www.makadiffsports.org). The
youth who are involved in SAY developed a video application for the
grant earlier this year. You can view
their video online at https://youtu.
be/wNDxaJNWbho. Makadiff received
49 applications and provided grants
to nine projects across Alberta. SAY
is honored and very excited to be selected!
The grant is to be used to increase

sports participation in Strathmore, and

the group will be focusing on community engagement of the Strathmore
Disc Golf Course which SAY constructed in 2015. SAY is still in the initial
planning stages regarding how the
funds will be spent, but ideas include
providing professional instruction to
all schools in Strathmore, Play with a
Pro nights on the course, hosting tournaments, and advertising in various
forms. Look for many exciting events
coming in the spring of 2016!
If you have an idea of how SAY
could improve sport participation
through disc golf in Strathmore, please
contact the group at strathmoreassemblyofyouth@gmaill.com or via their
Facebook page.

More than 10 years

Author finishes decade long project

Continued from Page 16
It was funny to see that he was lonely, he was looking for the things that I
found in life. It was funny to actually
take this character and raise him, grow
him into something more.
The book, which Higgins described
as a philosophical comedy, focuses a lot
on Roman and Greek mythology. The
story follows Jacks journey to the afterlife filled with gods, reapers, demons,
angels, party girls and porn stars. However, when Jack meets the Grim Reaper
he finds out his file was misplaced and
his place in the afterlife is unknown.
Higgins imagination describes a world
where the god Zeus Jupitor is in charge
of Hell, or how it is referred to in the
book as an underfunded economy.
Heaven on the other hand is flourishing and run by god Juno Hera and Zeus
Jupitors ex-wife, with their ancient and
bitter divorce endangering the political
landscape of the Astral Plains.
Its not about good and evil, because
when you die it really is about the difference between the people, Higgins
said. The war between the two is a divorce trial, not an actual war, because
theres no point to a war when youre
dead. Its the politics of being dead, so I

had to create a whole other world, and

find out why things had value, and why
certain people were against each other.
It was doing that as well as a lot of research.
Despite faced with the occasional
writers block and doubts, quitting was
never an option for the writer who
grew up in Strathmore since age 12.
While he felt it took him so many years
to complete his book to understand
certain complexities and come to certain realizations, his wife Mandee had a
hard time believing her husband when
he informed her the book was finally
ready for publication.
Its been a long time and he was
off in his own space a lot, but once it
comes together its hopefully going to
be worth it, Mandee said.
When he got writers block he just
wouldnt write, or when we had kids,
he stopped writing for a bit so he could
be more involved in our lives. Its been
in his head for so long. Im very proud
of him.
Faced with the promotion of his book
that is currently available on Amazon.
ca, Amazon.co.uk and Xlibris.com, Higgins will be launching his book at the
Strathmore Municipal Library on Nov.

Strathmore Mayor Michael Ell performed a

ceremonial faceoff with
members of the CFR
Bisons, CFR Chemicals, and Calgary Royals, to start the season
for the CFR Bisons at
the Strathmore Family
Centre on Oct. 2.

It was two straight

home wins for the CFR
Bisons as they beat the
Calgary Royals 2-1 and
the Medicine Hat Tigers 6-2.

Bisons off to perfect start

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

After watching the curtain being pulled
away from Markus Lavallees #17 jersey, it
was evident the CFR Bisons wanted to win
the home opener for their late teammate, as
emotions ran high.
The players did exactly that as they battled
hard against the Calgary Royals and strong
goaltending to win 2-1.
While assistant coach Dave Attwood realized the effect the events had on the players, which he believes contributed to a slow
start, the team found their rhythm as the
game wore on.
There was a lot going on in the kids
minds, said Attwood. It was their first
game, so it was a bit nerve wracking for
some. I think it was tough for them to get
into it, it was maybe a bit of a slow start.
Eventually when you start playing the game,
you start forgetting about other things and
play hockey the other things kind of fall
out of your mind.
Attwood added the players effort was
sound as the team battled hard against the
Royals, who pushed hard on the Bisons early.
When the guys realized we were in a battle, they took it up a notch, said Attwood.
I thought we had a lot of scoring chances
and their goalie did a good job for their team
keeping the game tight. We couldve got one
or two more I think.
Captain Kyle Gordon and Brent Trentham
scored in the win.
On Sunday afternoon, the Bisons were involved in a penalty parade at home against a
physical Medicine Hat Tigers squad, and got

a lot of work on the power play and penalty

kill and were able to pull out a 6-2 win.
We havent worked on a lot of that kind
of stuff, said Attwood. Today was about
keeping it simple and playing the game as
it unfolded. We did take way more penalties
than we would like to, well work on that
also because thats something we want to get
used to.
Attwood said passing is one of their
strengths and the close support enabled
them to make those plays to get out of trouble, but when they tried to stretch the play
out, it caused a lot of turnovers.
If we learn to do that in a whole game effort, were going to be better, he said.
Local first year player Kaden Hanas
thought the two wins were a great way to
salute Markus and that he was looking down
proudly.
We just thought what would Markus
want? said Hanas. He wouldnt want us
playing brutal, hed want a win for sure, especially with all the hype. It was good of us
to do this for Markus.
Hanas admittedly took a bad penalty a few

Considering the Wheatland
Chiefs only made their roster
a day before heading to Cranbrook, they did not have an
issue of team chemistry as the
club outscored Cranbrook 22-2
in two games.
Every line seemed to have
connected in some form offensively; the local double-A midget team stuck with three sets of
lines all weekend and everyone
played a role in the wins.
We played a team game, said
assistant coach Keenan Desmet.
They played a full 60 in the
first game (15-1 win), its kind
of hard to play a full 60 minutes
when youre blowing a team
out. But they seemed to stick to
the game plan.
Desmet added the team is
very strong, easy to work with
and smart players who play
with a physical edge.
In the 15-1 thrashing, Chase
Hnatowich and Chris Rebeyka
scored three apiece, while Lucas
Muenchrath and Jason Hobson
scored two. Ryan McHarg, Brad
Hendricks, Ryan Skytt, Kody
Hammond and Alec Biletsky all
scored one each.
The second game, a 7-1 win,
saw Hobson and Riley Romachenko score two apiece while
Muenchrath, Skytt and Biletsky
supplied single tallies.
The Chiefs will play their
home opener on Oct. 10 (4:45
p.m.) at the Strathmore Family
Centre.
Meanwhile the Wheatland
Braves swept through Cranbrook with 3-1 and 5-2 scores
respectively and have given
head coach Carl Knudsen optimism about working hard on
little things to win close games.
We had two pretty good
games, said Knudsen. They
had some strong goaltending.
The scoreboard didnt really
reflect how well we were play-

games and controlled the play
for the most part down low in
the offensive end.
He added they were effective
when they chased down loose
pucks and were relentless winning puck battles.
Tristan Zandee scored two
goals and Tegan Skehar notched
one in the first game. Adam
Kirkpatrick supplied two goals,
while Zandee, Ray Warrack and
Zach Nicholls added singles in
the second game win.
The local double-A peewee
team will be back on the ice on
Oct. 16 (7:30 p.m.) in Hussar
against Lethbridge.
Cody Browns Wheatland Warriors split their weekend games,
as they lost to Lethbridge on
Saturday, but were able to redeem themselves with a 6-4 win
over Cranbrook on Sunday.
We went to Lethbridge and
got a little too comfortable with
expecting things to come easy,
said Brown. A lot of guys I
think thought it was going to
be a walk in the park and they
stood us up down there. Theyre
a decent team and we didnt
show up and got what we deserved.
Brown thought the game in
Cranbrook was a better allaround effort but felt as though
the team could have offered
more offensively.
Same thing, we definitely left
a lot on the table out there, but
like I said its a work in progress, he said.
Brandon Kasdorf, Carter Kim
and Anson McMaster scored in
the loss.
Mo Hakim led the way with
two, while Kasdorf, Kyle Bray,
Max Kathol and Kevin Schrok
rounded out the offense in the
win.
The local double-A bantam
team will be in Taber Oct. 9 before hosting Medicine Hat on
Oct. 11 (4:45 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Crowther senior volleyball teams play with passion

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Crowther Memorial Junior High
Schools senior volleyball teams
learned a lot about team positioning
on the court and their ability to maintain a positive attitude through each
game was enough encouragement for
the coaches to see.
The girls finished fourth as hosts but
coach Lindsay Hall said the players
had exceptional positioning and were
able to pass the ball around effectively.
The girls really knew where they
were supposed to be on the court, and
that made a huge difference in our
gameplay, said Hall.
We were able to pass and dig balls
well because we were in position. The
girls were passionate and never let a
ball hit the floor.

With the team playing a lot of games

over the weekend, Hall felt their stamina could have been better to go longer
in matches but gave the girls credit for
working hard to get results.
We even had some great comebacks, they never gave up and kept
trying, said Hall.
Brad Huntley felt his boys team
played better through the tournament
than their 0-6 record indicated as he
saw a lot of positives on the court.
Some of the great highlights were
watching my shorter guys make some
amazing blocks and kill shots, said
Huntley.
I had a few kids that played like
they were one to two feet taller than
they actually were. It was a great
learning experience for the kids, even
though we lost.
He added they were in every game

and one point here and one point

there could have easily made their
teams weekend more successful.
We were almost in all the games,
said Huntley.
At one point, one of my players said
to the team I know were 0-6 in games

right now, but if we had only a few

points go our way in each game we
could just as easily be 5-1.
Overall, what Huntley was most impressed was the attitude of the kids
and how they supported each other
through the games.

Fall ball moves ahead

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

After three triumphant weeks, the
Strathmore Reds fall ball bantam team
has made tremendous strides in development over the campaign, which
has not gone unnoticed by the teams
coaching staff.
I like to see the kids improving every single day, said Chin. They come
out, this a good group of kids, they like
to work hard at practice and its been
showing in the games and in their results. From the teams were playing in
Calgary, it seems to me anyway, that
were pretty much a step ahead of them
in terms of baseball sense in general
and knowing situations. Theyre really
knowing how to compete at that level,
especially the kids moving up into bantam the next year.
The players had to get accustomed
to the practices being more developmental sessions compared to just doing
preparations for that weekends game
during the summer, while positions became more flexible as kids tried them
all.
Its good exposure for the kids all
around, said Chin. Its less competitive in the sense that practices are more
based on development and structured
skill wise instead of geared towards
strategy. Its good for them, a lot more

individual work and they can work on

themselves as ball players, and it shows
when they come work in practice, they
meld there as a team.
Chin added that the competition has
improved from years prior, and thinks
this year has been a great test for the
kids.
The competition is a little bit better
for the kids, said Chin. But that being
said, its been better for their improvement as well, playing against the older
kids because there are some kids in the
league that are 16-years-old theyre
competing (against).
The kids do take certain strategies
into the games to keep themselves
sharp on the field and it has been noticeable through their play and attitude
on the field.
Weve been talking a lot about just
approaching the game of baseball from
a mental aspect and really not letting
their body language and negative attitude affect their play, said Chin. Ive
seen improvements every single week
and seems like theyre doing a conservative effort to do that.
Nathan Bogstie thinks fall ball has
helped him as a player allowing him
to play more baseball, and said its a
reprieve compared to the busy summer
season.
Its not as intense and its a good experience, he said.

Sader continues successful

Brentwood Run Club
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Having run on his own for 12 years, including
four Boston Marathons, Dr. Ben Sader is in his
fifth season of sharing his passion for running
with the Brentwood Elementary Run Club and
has successfully built a feeder system going into
the high school.
Thanks to the dedication and support from parents volunteering in the program, Sader gets great
satisfaction out of teaching Grade 3 to Grade 6
runners.
The kids get immersed in the culture of running right from the start, said Sader. We have a
good team of volunteer coaches and teachers that
help support it and on any given practice well
have six or seven parents helping to guide the
runners in going and finding the pace and distance that works for each individual. It starts with
having a dedicated group of volunteers.
The kids normally find a group to train with
and have found that the distances in their training sessions have varied on each route they take.
However, Sader thinks its important to find a
comfortable level for success.
Distances will vary from one lap around the
school yard, which is around 700 metres, (and
running) three kilometres with some of the kids,
he said. They ultimately select where theyre going with and find the right pace for them. Some
days well do more interval training where well
work more on shorter distances in sprints because some of the runners enjoy the shorter relay
type of races rather than longer distances.
Being in the midst of their fall season, runners
have not only improved their endurance, but
numbers of participation have also been on the
rise.
Youre already seeing runners sustaining a

faster pace for longer, said Sader. Continuously

running over a distance they choose to run in. On
a club basis, we started with 29 runners the first
year and now the last couple of years, weve been
able to get around 70 to 75 runners interested
in running. Also just watching the kids grow in
terms of their own potential from the time they
start in Grade 3 all the way up to Grade 6, (they)
all see some significant improvement in their running endurance.
The team just participated for the second time
in the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir race in Okotoks,
has a Grade 6 category and a Grade 7-12 category
and joined with Crowther Memorial Junior High
Schools team, which has given the Grade 6 contingent a guide to being successful runners.
That race has been quite a good selling point
for our Grade 6 runners, said Sader. It opens
their eyes to see what running really is to some
of their fellow peers from other schools and to
see how kids really join together in team and supporting each other. And also for them to run on
an actual cross country-type running track.
Crowthers coach Kevin Mertz thinks the mentorship that Sader provides and the buddying system bodes well for the sport.
It is always great when we can travel with
the elementary runners in town, said Mertz. Its
good for my group to demonstrate those leadership qualities and good for them to be involved
with the older role models. From elementary to
junior high, through high school, we have developed a solid running program for our community
through our school in Strathmore. It will only get
bigger and better.
Brentwood will finish their fall season with the
fall run on Oct. 22 and then start back up in the
spring in preparation of their year- end run where
teams from Carseland and Rockyford participate
in the event.

FORGIVENESS
Yes, it succeeded in getting my
attention. A church in my former
community had started a new campaign of signs and the direct mailing
of advertisements using the concept
of dropping the F Bomb. The prominent billboard eye-catching graphic
showed a young woman with her jaw
dropped and the words F* Bomb
placed over her gapping mouth. It
communicated to our culture, but I
had to wonder- what did it communicate? Will parents find advice on
how to eliminate crass language
from their childrens mouths? Maybe
how to respond when such language
happens in the work place? How to
avoid it in ourselves? Furthermore, I
had to ask myself: if I was to attend
this series, what would actually draw
me to it? Was it answers to questions
I have or an interest in this as a
controversial subject? Well it turns
out the series was on forgiveness.
Apparently the f-bomb here is forgiveness. Indeed, both swearing and
forgiveness are relevant topics, but
the graphic was not related to either
topic. In marketing this is called Bait
and Switch. It is not respected.
This is not to say that the attention
getting aspect of their approach to
preaching is wrong in itself. It is
incomplete though, and such incompleteness can shape our expectations
for church life. Such an approach
promotes the idea that if a church is
sensitive to cultural concerns and is
stylistically up-to-date it will reach our
culture. Is a church relevant because
it is informed on cultural issues,
uses media appropriately, and is

stylistically up to date? None of these

things detract from a ministry, but they
do not in themselves make a church
relevant.
These things help a ministry communicate with cultural sensitivity
and thus help establish a common
ground for communicating with
those who are living with a high level
of contemporaneity. However, the
key question in identifying effective
ministry is what does a ministry do
with what they communicate? In
particular, how will it be pertinent
to the congregations needs? The
approach described in the example
above provides cultural relevance, but
does not address biblical relevance.
Biblical relevance is concerned with
helping people see how the Christian
message gives meaning and significance to life. That is, how the bibles
teaching is pertinent to contemporary
situations. With the popular model of
relevance described above, ministry
is brought together with culture, but
not the bible. We need an approach
that brings together contemporary
culture and the bible. Both cultural
relevance and biblical relevance
are needed. The bible contains truth
that the church throughout time has
considered without error and effectively addressing the deeps needs of
any culture or time. What we need
today is a clear presentation of that
truth communicated in manner that
is understandable and applicable to
todays audience. May our churches
strive to do that here in Strathmore.

The Wheatland Kings put one in the win column on

Oct. 3 beating the Ponoka Stampeders 5-3 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.

Kings get their match

in weekend games
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings played at high competitive level, driving more pucks into the back of the
net when they played three games in a three night
stretch last weekend.
According to co-coach Joel Robinson, discipline
played an important factor in opening the weekend with a 6-4 win over High River on Friday night
and edging Ponoka 5-3 on Saturday night, which
he thinks is making them a better hockey team.
The last couple of games weve been way more
disciplined and using that to our advantage said
Robinson.
I think one of the biggest things is were coming together as a team. Since day 1 at camp its
come a long way. Its definitely a result of the guys
buying in now and understanding like hey lets
make a name for ourselves, and lets not take anyone lightly.
He did praise High River and Ponoka for giving the Kings games of hard battling and said its
only going to make the league better. Playing hard
every night will allow teams to learn how to improve on different aspects of the game.
Its competitive, said Robinson.
Its only benefitting us as a team. If every team
is giving us a good run for our money every night,
Id much rather have it that way than blowing
teams out and not learning how to play with a
lead.
Robinson added that the transition game has
been their strength and has helped them in the
neutral zone with gaining breaks and turning the
puck back to the offensive zone.

403-874-6486

Its the good first hard pass and making the

smart play, said Robinson.
Our transition game is getting good and you
look at the neutral zone and as soon as that puck
is either turned over in our favour or the oppositions favour, its hitting those breaks and getting
back into the play. Its nice to see everyones buying into that concept.
Jacen Bracko, who is the grandson of the late
Ken Bracko, has been thrilled with the teams play
of late and to him the wins are all that matter.
I think weve been playing pretty good, said
Bracko.
We get off to big leads and kind of let them up
but as long as we get the win it doesnt matter too
much.
He added once the puck is down in the oppositions end, the team is offensively dominant and
scoring more goals.
We just never give up, he said.
We had lots of scoring chances throughout the
game. It was just a matter of time before they went
in.
In High River, Tyler Rivest led the way with two
goals, while Bracko, Matt Brelis, Brooker Pretty
Youngman, and Cole Sartorio each added one
goal.
Bracko, Pretty Youngman, Lucas Jones, Chris
Williams and Braden Binder scored against Ponoka.
The Kings would lose 8-5 in Blackfalds on Sunday afternoon.
Next up for the Kings will be a road game in
Three Hills on Oct. 9 at 8 p.m., then back at home
on Oct. 10 against the Cochrane Generals at 8
p.m. and then Oct. 12 in Coaldale at 2 p.m.

Spartans senior boys volleyball win George Mac tournament

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Spartan high school
senior boys volleyball team won their
second tournament of this early season
at George McDougall in Airdrie last
weekend, and coach Cole Hintz applauded his players for finding ways to
dig their selves out of deficits to gain
points on strong 3A schools.
The guys are slowly learning the
level of focus and resiliency that they
will need to achieve the level of success we are looking for this year, said
Hintz.
It gave us the opportunity to be
tested a little bit more. We had to get a
little better at responding when things

didnt go well so that we could move

on and earn the next point and the
guys did a good job this weekend of
doing that.
He added the communication got
better as the weekend went on, looking ahead before each set and discussing how they were going to score
points.
From the first victory a couple of
weeks ago to the second one, Hintz
has seen tremendous improvement in
a lot of areas.
Our setting and middle attack has
become real effective for us, said
Hintz.
And its made it a lot easier to score
points and also made it easier on the
outside hitters.

The Strathmore Spartan high school senior boys volleyball team showed resiliency in every match
they played to win the George McDougall Invitational in Airdrie last weekend.

Crowther gained confidence going into zones

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Crowther Memorial Junior High
School Cougars cross country team
saw their training efforts paid off at the
Okotoks meet last week, setting the
schools personal best with more Top
10 finishes than ever before in a group
of around seven schools and several
hundred kids.
Our first meet was huge success for
our team, said Mertz. Some competed
in their first cross-country race, others
refined race strategy and some got a
reminder that running is hard work
and racing can be a killer. All-in-all, everyone came out of the day happy and
better racers.
Mertz categorized his team as a flatland team, which means they are used

to the hill-less tracks, but thinks with

hard work and preparation the team
came together and fared well.
Sometimes us flatland runners lack
confidence going into hilly races, said
Mertz. But as coaches, we are sure to
prepare our kids through very hard
training and race prep. They looked
fabulous.
Metrz thinks that perseverance paid
dividends even if they werent used to
that type of competition level.
No surprises really for me, said
Mertz. I just get to cheer and feel pride
in my athletes. Some of them may have
been surprised by the competitiveness
and difficulty of cross-country racing.
But hey, when you puke at the end of a
race, you know you left it all out there.
Zone results were unavailable as of
press time.

Spartans had strong

meet, hopeful for
zone banner
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Spartans high school
cross country team saw some personal
bests out of their strong junior girls category heading into zones, which was
held Sept. 29 in Sundre.
With the junior girls, it has developed as we kind of suspected, seeing
these kids run in Grade 9, said Sonsteby. Junior girls has developed into
probably one of our strongest categories.
Lynn Schoenwolff, who a German
student, came in first place in the
group at 15 minutes and 11 seconds,
while Geena Schramm came in with a
time of 16 minutes 44 seconds. Right
behind them were Kaylin Larson and
Ann Sauve, which built the category
even stronger.
Sonstebys junior boys had a much
tougher category, and despite many of
them experiencing their first run this
year, it was more of a tune up for the
provincial sprint.
For a lot of them, that was their first
run of the year, he said. And for some
of the junior runners, its been a while
since theyve done a competition. I expect a lot of these boys will see better
results.
He added that the boys ran as a pack
and instantly lost three spots, while
health issues became a factor for a couple of the runners.
The Spartans go to the same meet
every year in Okotoks, which was the
host site for provincials last year. The
course previously developed runners,
in particular the experienced ones, and
tested their abilities and contributed to
numerous successes for a couple of the
athletes.
Some of our experienced runners,
Mackenzie Bain in the intermediate
category and Maria Fanning in the senior category, are quite familiar with
this course and theyve ran it in a very
stressful pack, said Sonsteby. Normally its just our zone and a couple of
invites that show up and this was the
second year that two big schools from
the Medicine Hat area that showed up,
both of those have large teams that are
very successful at zones and at provincials. It makes for more of a competitive atmosphere; its also a really fun
atmosphere.
Heading into zones, Sonsteby said
the group is confident and would like
to push for the banner or at least get
close to whoever is contending.

Gerry passed away at Sagewood Agecare on Sunday October 4, 2015. He was a quiet man who

Romaniuk, Adam Romaniuk, Layne Risseeuw,
and Shayla Risseeuw; great grandchildren Skylar,
Taylor & Zachary Wolf, Dominic Wolf, and Jaxson
McTavish; sister-in-law Eileen Risseeuw. He was
predeceased by brothers John and Eric Risseeuw
and sister Rachel Flowers. Funeral services will

Mortgage Matters by Strathmores Mortgage Specialist

Mortgages versus credit cards are you at your limit?
Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.
