Galvashield FMA

constructive solutions

Galvanic corrosion protection system for

severe exposure concrete elements
Uses

Standard compliance

Galvashield FMA is designed to reinstate and actively

protect reinforced concrete/structural steel elements
subject to the most severe exposure conditions in the tidal
zone. Typical applications include fender walls, dolphins,
jetty walls etc in marine environments.
Advantages

Galvashield FMA will, when installed and connected in

accordance with approved instructions, exceed the
minimum 15 year life criteria laid down by FHWA and DOT
specifications. The design of Galvashield FMA follows
comprehensive criteria established for the patented
Lifejacket system developed by the Alltrista
Corporation.

No post installation maintenance required

Specification

Self powered and self regulating

All in one repair and protection system

The galvanic protection jacket shall be Galvashield FMA,

a zinc mesh anode system and shall provide a minimum
working life of 15 years.

Longest life expectancy of any galvanic system

Instructions for use

Satisfies the 100mV criteria for effective cathodic

protection

Preparation
In order for Galvashield FMA to function correctly, steel
reinforcing must be continuous, if not, continuity must be
established throughout the structure prior to making
connections (see detailed method statement). Make any
repairs to the substrate using Renderoc repair products as
necessary prior to commencing the Galvashield

Proven technology with measured performance

Provides highly cost effective repair vs comparable
systems
Quick, easy and low cost installation, no costly
electrical work or monthly monitoring

FMA preparation proceedures. Grit or water blast the

substrate to remove all coatings, laitence, grease, marine
fouling or any other deleterious material.

Description
Galvashield FMA is a galvanic protection system based
upon the installation of a zinc mesh anode system
conforming to ASTM A-190. The anode system is
connected to the steel reinforcement to provide the
required protective current to the steel. Contact to the
surface of the concrete is maintained by purpose designed
compression members.

Fix cathode connectors in predrilled holes by compression

using a hammer and setting tool. The holes for the
cathode connections are to be filled with Nitomortar PE.
When cathode connections are made, continuity cross
checks are to be made (see detailed method statement).
The cathode connectors are fixed to the mesh by
soldering.

Galvashield FMA can be applied to rectangular, circular or

flat substrate profiles.

After fixing, continuity between the mesh and cathode

connections is to be checked. Each mesh sheet fixed is
connected to the adjacent sheet by soldring (see detailed
method statement).

A replaceable bulk anode may be incorporated into the

system in order to provide considerable lifetime extension
where required.

Mesh fixing procedure

Design criteria

The Galvashield FMA mesh is fixed to the concrete using

compresion members (see detailed method statement).

Galvashield FMA is a cathodic protection system utilising

the long proven principle of galvanic protection to provide
long term durability to both new and existing structures in
conditions of extreme exposure such as splash and tidal
zones in marine environments.
In line with other galvanic protection systems, Galvashield
FMA must be designed and the installation supervised by
a specialist in the field of corrosion control.
